Blah AWNMR - Auckland Wednesday Night Mentor Ride ('07)

    What - Newbie training/confidence session
    When - Wednesdays
Where - Meet at shell westgate then directed to a practice area nearby
Why - A chance for new riders and learners to get practical advice on your riding and learn new skills from site mentors.
    Time - 6.30pm (Departing 7pm)

Directed at new riders looking for confidence and training -
all are welcome to attend and learn

Start with a briefing from KB Mentor followed by a short practice session in the "training area" Then a slow paced ride to put your newly learned skills to work in the "real" world.
This will NOT be a normal group ride its going to be 1 on 1 with your mentor to a maximum of 3 bikes in a group.

A stop in the middle to ask questions and recieve feedback on your riding.

    Just a note here folks
We are a bunch of reasonably experienced riders who are happy to pass on our riding experience in an informal way
It will NEVER replace training from Qualified instructors like the Ride Safe course or the 1 on 1 training people like TRICIA1000 are able to give you --- Frosty

PLEASE FOLKS THIS IS NOT A GENERAL OPEN RIDE -IF YOU WANNA SHOW OFF YOUR MONO SKILLS DO IT ANOTHER NIGHT

Started new thread by popular demand!

This week we are all 'practical' and those that feel upto it have the oppurtunity for a short slow ride:

OK - This wednesday the mentors and I have decided to have a slow easy ride. Its going to be nice and slow, with no pressure at all too go out of your comfort zone. We will meet at westgate, shell as usual and i will brief you all on our route and group riding techniques.

    - You need to make sure you have enough fuel in your bike.
    - Make sure your tyre pressures are correct (if you need help just ask one of us).
    - And that at 7pm you are ready to leave (so get there at 6.30pm so you can be ready)

Also if you are 'very new' or feel you cannot do this ride, I will also set up the cones in the carpark and have a couple of mentors with those people to go through the basics.

Again I ask that you sign up on the calender entry so I can organise enough mentors to cover everyone, and please dont hesitate to PM me if you would like a mentor escort you to westgate.

(note the calender entry 'sign up' is for EVERYONE - mentors and newbies, and regardless of wether your doing the ride or staying in the car park)

    Not there

Having to work, so won't be able to make it. Sounds like I'll be missing a good one.

    Have fun.

    Blah

Just a note that you need to sign up before wednesday, as it seems the "I will be attending this event" disapears on wednesday.

Plus you all wouldnt want to miss out on seeing me fall off, and impale myself on those little plastic road cones hehe

    Definately a noob this week.....
If any of you have friends who want to learn how to ride this would be a good night to bring them along to pillion with a mentor, or if you want to be a pillion your self.

My pillion seat will be empty. Post here if you want to be pillioned or if you want to bring someone to try it.

Oh if there are more pillions than seats I may go for several shorter rides to accomodate.

So still planning on heading out to Huia?

Did the ride on Sunday and it is a good route. Quite a variety of hazards and it is going to force people to consider their braking and cornering. There is a bit of variety in the types of corners - long sweepers and tight twisties. None of it is a problem given a sane pace, but it will give plenty of opportunity for observers to pick up on
    a variety of things.

Only problem I see is that it will take an hours travel time to get there and an hour to get back with a group, not allowing for stops.
Could consider a couple of things if this is a problem. Starting earlier, starting a bit closer say at Bruce Mclaren rd or the bottom of Don Buck rd. or not going all the way out to Huia - say stop at the dam instead.

I'd be up for either an earlier start or change of location.

hmm, may be good to stop at the dam - some people work during the day? Would also be good to get to the pub and talk about the ride with your mentor? (my 2c)

I adapt easily ,I think CaN is onto a good idea ..meeting location changed for this week to nearer(Perhaps and it is just a suggestion..pyes pa car park?, )and to the dam?which one..I assume the nearest one ...so we will have to pass it to turn safely with a group.I think this is a good idea . Remember we are learning still please.I know I want to be able to at least keep up but there are others more nervous...little bites I can arrange a drink at the dam just have to ask nice.
