Weather is crap, I ain't taking my camera out in this. It's less waterproof than I am. Besides I revisited it's night settings and it don't have the ability to hold the shutter open for as long as I want. Yes it does have the moon setting which is half way there, but it won't let me keep the shutter open for as long as my finger is on the button, which my old film camera let me do. Get great night shots that way.

132226So, it stopped raining...sort of. Harvd or the ethics committee are gonna have to make a call on this because as usual, I took a nice pic of the tag in the dark.
The tag location is almost on the intersection of Hammerton Ln and Bridle Path Rd, Heathcote Valley. Opposite 154. Just out of frame to the left is the No 35 bus stop, to the right, a small tree. Note the electric fence sign on the fence.

:cold: The trick there is wear enough that you think you will be warm, then add another woolly jersey..
If you're not starting to cook :sweatdrop under all those clothes before you get on the bike then there's no way you have enough chill protection on.
When it's really cold and you going to do highway riding stick ya wet weathers on over what ever you normally wear, even if you normally wear the cordura/synthetic stuff and it's not raining.

Well since the new tag wasn't up I went for a bit of a ride anyway and had a look at some old ones.
Mikkel, I'm afraid I just dont get your clues. To me Lyttelton is full of places that fit them all and I was unable to duplicate your shots in all of them except the Hilton heights which was already confirmed for us.
Some pics anyway...
1-Overseas
2-Pink Floyd attempt
3-another Pink Floyd attempt (yep didn't bother sticking the bike in there)
4-Turning Point attempt
5-another Turning Point attempt (on the Bridle Path this time, where the seal ends)

Ok, I must be an impatient bistard.
It's not my turn so not an official tag but while we wait has anyone seen this land locked boat? or even better if you know anything about it?
While we're still here I like to suggest a small ammendment toi the rules to keep things flowing...
Can we please allow photos up to say 4 weeks old to be used when placing a new Tag, but when you go capture someone elses Tag you still have to get a fresh photo.
The idea being that we can keep one up our sleeves to keep the game moving.
What do you think?

No. Guzza claimed it at 1:45am Wednesday morning (Tuesday night) then popped back at 6am Wednesday morning for a laugh and hasn't been seen or posted the new one since.
There was talk in one of the other games about a forefit if the new Tag isn't posted within a specific time frame. Can't find where I read it.

Just for interest here's where I went, with a rough idea where I actually got off and took some of the photos...
Pink Floyd - Gilmour Terrace, I took my picture at the very end of it where it turns into a dirt road. So you got that one.
Turning point - On Somes Road, close to where it joins Ross Terrace. There's a layby on the side towards the harbour. It is the only viable place to do a U-turn since the road is so narrow.
As for a tag, I think we're just waiting for someone to claim the boat out of water.
rosie631
18th June 2009, 14:02
I could go and get the boat now but it's not the official tag. Think we should wait for Guzza and then set some new rules regarding posting time etc for future use.

Been watching this game with interest, it too far for me to ride to participate ,but, as fro the rules, I think that the person that submits the winning tag, must also produce the new tag in the same post. Thus making for a continuous flow. It cant be that hard to do this, I am sure that we all would pass likely locations whilst looking for a currrent tag.
The tags does not have to be hard doeas it? Maybee if a GPS location could be tossed out each weekend, so that it becomes the quickest to get it and post, not a tag that is ahide and seek as the ones we have seen so far have been.
A cheeky tag could be inside a service workshop, your bike on the workbench.
How many of us would pic Cycle Treads work bench if it was posted.
Have to agree with the max 24hrs between tags as a rule.

Both my other choices didn't pan out because of the bad weather and the time of day. Bloody dangerous pulling to the side of the road in rush hour where the only place off the road is swamp masquerading as a roadside verge. <----- not a clue.

Right... this will be an issue of the people's court. I've just ridden 10km in the rain at night, found the tag, taken some photos of my bike there and come back.
HOWEVER,
being dark and wet I struggled to take a good photo from the correct position. So what I will do is put up several photos of my bike in front of the ship and you can judge whether it counts.

Pirate Island golf, Roydvale Ave is where I beleived it to be.
The place didn't exist when I was a kid and I'm not really in to mini golf so haven't stopped there myself but google results were conclusive enough for me to intend to go check it out.
I reckon you've save me a trip.
Can people please put a Street name in with their claim picture posts to make map update easier.
On the tags I don't know I'd now have to waste time searching for them online to get an address to stick the marker.

Even just quoting Roydvale Ave as the street would have narrowed the search for an actual address to position the map pin easier, but in this case as mentioned I already had the address for Pirate island.
The Selwin Council building in Rolliston had me stuffed, after it was claimed by BabyBandit I searched for an address for that using several different querys and kept getting the run around in results but no address.
It would be one of those times when someone else might search for it with slightly different wording and get a street address in the first result.
I was only able to update the map when the original claim post was edited with an intersection as a reference.

Got another place in mind but can only find text about poles being put there, no pictures!!
I wish it was warmer and the daylight lasted longer. What do you reckon, if I wish hard enough for long enough it might happen eventually aye.
Oh yea, I think the churches stuck in our minds because they took a while to get.
May I tag along? At Halswell Park, Songpa area.
I thought it would be on side of the road! I had to ride down a walking track (muddy) to get there. Good fun.
So what happens now?

23rd June 2009, 18:51
Woohoo good effort EJ, you're spot on!
The clue was a reference to Halswell quarry by the way.
My dad has a lot to do with song pa sister city relations, and I thought it was a mint place for a tag. Plus, the road out there from westmorland, Cashmere rd, was the first place I rode proper twisty roads, and remains one of my favourite rides.
Although, you didn't need to ride the mud track to get there. I went through the entrance on Kennedy's Bush rd, went down the tarmac, and through a small gravel entrance (photo attached).
It was a choice between the poles and the hut in the Japanese garden. Wish I could have tagged that too lol.
Roll on the next one, I have another idea already!

darn it it , just home from work and off too claim tag and some midnight oiler has bet me too it . would have been a bit chilly:clap:
It was a bit chilly cruza, sat between 4 and 6 degrees the whole time... plus 120 to 140kmh worth of wind chill  I discovered some issues with the way I wrap up that will need addressing if I intend to do any serious cold weather riding in the future.

Yep, that's the one I think of when you say Culverden. Seen it up close and personal while geocaching in the park but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was for.
Question: Other than the railing what would we see through the round hole in the brick fence? It looks like the bike is parked on grass.
Is anyone going to get this tag with out help?

The bike is parked on grass though it is my feeling that at one time there would have been a path. Behind the gate is an historic building, also of red brick.
While we are on the subject, I am aware that viewing a tag in the dark obscures background details that might make the difference between getting the tag or not. I would be an advocate of keeping a tag up ya sleeve, at least it would allow me to shoot them in the light.

Here here, I'm definitely for that.
In reading Rosies post too, I'd like to see 36 hours and the ability to have a recent daylight one up ya sleeve ready to go.
The game tag could potentially move around more with less delay then.

I keep trying to get in on these but well hours of work rule it out, anyhow daylight tags would be better as detail is missing from some of the photos that would help identify the locations, I sure night time photos are fine if the location can be either identified or matched to the original tag but some have been a little dubious.

Yeah, that's true. Will leave it open for the next day or so for more opinions. And if no one has any major objections will add it to the rules.
What about maximum distance. Do we need to specify that?? Especially if using stored tags? 200kms?

There's no reason for the rules in ChCH to be identicle to the original ones the idea was based on.
The ChCh KB Adventure forum lot will probably/maybe? start one when the sun comes back out based around ADV rides and mostly away from the black top (that's tar seal for you whom might not already know).

Just posted the original ones as a starting point. Feel free to comment. We can tweak them to suit ourselves. I vote keep it to the roads. But if there is a bit of a gravel road involved that's ok as long as you state it, so that us Harley riders can choose whether to go for it or not.

Fact is, no matter where you put it, there will be someone willing to go after it. If the tag is up a metal road, then someone with an adventure bike will go get it if no roadies are willing. I'd say draw the line at approaches that would be impossible for a road bike.

Good going Guzza! No idea where your tag is though!!
I think that it should be well within 100km. Making it that far out can rule out some of our smaller bikes. It also becomes a weekend game. But if you guys make it this distance then maybe its worth considering starting a Christchurch one, where you cant go any more than 50km from the cathedral. There are plenty of places that can be done in the city... look at Guzzas first tag! No one knew where it was and it was just off Bealey Ave!

RE: distance limit.
Maybe name a few towns to make an approximate boundary.
Here's some distances to stick some perspective on things.
I'd do 200km (400km round trip) on a nice weekend but I suspect some of the younger riders may consider that a bit far from the murmurings about the place?
It's like 208 to Springs Junction.
Hanmer is 137km
Lyford 134km
Kaikoura is 182km
Jacksons is 180km
Arthurs Pass 146km
Mt Peel 146km
Geraldine 148km
Timaru 161km
Waimate 207km
100km is around Hinds / Pudding Hill / Castel Hill Village / Culverden (the Red Post corner) / Domett (almost Cheviot)
Akaroa is 80km.
All distances taken from the Square and measured by the open source maps I use in the Garmin GPS.

Something I have noticed about the game is that it ebbs and flows from city to country, from easy tags to challenging ones, depending on the nature and inclination of the tagger. It has proven to be a pretty good mix. I wouldnt like to see a 50 km limit. No objection to a longer range game starting tho

200kms is just going to eliminate competition.
If you want it to be more fast paced and varied then keep it closer... most all the ones in town have had multiple people going after them and we've seen some interesting photos.
The ones like that one in Culverden just seem to pad out the length of the tag with huge boring straights, and seem to limit people to how much time they have on their hands, whereas ones closer to home people can just see it, hop on their bikes and go for a hunt.
Seems stupid to me to deaden the pace with distance, when the game seems much more exciting when there are several people all out hunting for a place that's interesting to get to and racing back home to beat the others.
My 2c. Might as well keep the big ones for lazy Sundays when people are going to be out riding anyway.

I agree, we seem to be getting a pretty good mix. But probably a limit of 100kms is good for winter. Will add the 100km limit to the rules since that seems to be the general consensus. I think 50 is a bit short. Nice to have option to go a wee bit further sometimes.

Have added a 100km limit and a 36 hour reposting limit to the rules. What does everyone think about the use of file photos. Allowing recent file photos for placement of a new tag means you can have daylight ones all the time. Disallowing them means you're going to get a lot more night photos to look for as some of us just can't get out during the mid week in daylight.

Or if you make a new tag in the dark you have to back it up with a daylight version which would be from file... or even google
Although that will not do anything for the flow of the game and may be a bit frustrating having to go back to tag a place in the dark that you photographed just last weekend in the daylight. :argh:

Not having a dig
But lets not complicate the game with too many rules..
I think that as long as it a clear..ish photo, so to see background and other clues then its all good. The game is about trying to get a photo that will enable to get people out and about...that way they will see more potential tags for themselves etc
Some camera's are not bad at taking photo's at night and some...well thats another issue......

You have to have the odd tag that adds spice to the game , culverden or barrhill made people think , and you had to work for it .Harden up and stop moaning, theres some people who work most weekends/shift work , ya thought about them? <_<
McWild
26th June 2009, 17:45
An hour of straights isn't really my idea of "spice", if anything it creates more of a google challenge because less people are willing to ride a straight road for so long to just have a look.
Keep in mind that that was just an opinion, I actually think it would be stupid to add any more rules and would prefer to just let the game run its course.
It's all just fun anyway. I think everyone has the good sense not to do anything to ruin it.
Just saying that the game seems more fun when tags are closer, but everybody has a different idea of what the game is (and what fun is) so letting it run its course accomodates everyone.

The game is obviously different things to different people as is everything in life I suppose. I see no need to have exactly the same rules as every one else.
If we keep the status quo then there will almost certainly be a full days wait for everyone before a new tag goes up on a fair few of the next tags I get.
End of the day it's not going to be anything anyone's going to loose sleep over, what ever everyone settles on.
If the game gets to feeling too broken by a lot of waiting then I'll likely just loose interest... not that that matters really.:whocares:

I definatly want to play the game but if the rule is daylight only pix, Thats me out. I work 6 days a week, often 70+ hours . It is impossible for me to take pix in daylight during the week.
Night shots reduce the level of info one can glean from a pic. A tidy solution would be allowing file pix. The way I see it, as long as your bike is in the pic, you have been there so whats the difference if I take the pic at lunch time on sunday, or straight after hunting down a fresh tag?

Well, if you do the ride on the Sunday in advance for the purpose of using as a tag in the near future I think that's ok. I guess the original rules mean file photos as in - I was here a year ago.
Don't want to get bogged down in rules so just everybody do tags as they see fit. We all have different bikes, time commitments etc so there will be somebody interested in going for them.

Night shots do reduce the amount of info you can glean out of a photo. So a "simple" tag gets difficult. bugger eh !!! Just the same as putting a tag in areas Google Earth doesn't cover clearly (will they be banned too ??)
Simple rules ... may not suit ALL .... But thats life.

Unfortunatly, these scumbags didnt get away with this for decades without some complicity. The whole John of God order should have been wound up.

I am truly surprised at the difficuilty of this tag. Although it is not in plain sight, its the kind of feature that you would see once and never forget. It wasn't even my first choice, just a quick "plan B"
I have always remembered it because it's very well done and I know how hard it is to build brick arches, let alone circles. Also, the moon gate is common in Chinese culture rather than western and there are no other design cues that tie it to the buildings or the grounds.
Looking forward to cruzas effort! :D
