Those local bricks no doubt came from the Deans Famly brick works. I wonder if they bank rolled the unusual design in order for it to be a show piece?

Thats where the bricks and tiles did come from. The library contains a sample of all the brick and terracotta tile the factory ever produced. But was built from "public raised money" ... which could be partially as you suggest ...

Prior to building the library, he built the Homebush station woolshed too.

The builder was a Thomas Lamport.

New Tag. Here you go... Not a great pic I am afraid. This one is quite tricky (I think) Cant see this door from the road but building is easily visible.
I will try and get back there tomorrow and get a better picture in the daylight.

Ok, Apparently my grainy dark photo of an obscure doorway somwhere in Canterbury is not enough.
Here is a better one showing a bit more of the building, Many of you will have been past it often(especially if you like a bit of fishing).

Good luck.

Dam, had hoped we would have moved on by the time I got back toi town.
I googled "mr bridge" with and without quotes, with and without "church" / "land" / "donate" and various other things with and without mr bridge but kept getting a load of non relevent rubbish. Google is full of bridges but generally they aren't people. lol.
Will look again with your latest post in mind, but am thinking a ride to Rakaia may be a start, at least to rule out some of the canterbury area.

I Wasnt quite so lucky. I was informed by PeterJ as I got to the church that some one had been through in the arvo to claim the tag

Turned out I had been sitting on most of the correct clues all along, just not that one piece of definitive info thast tied it all together. "Mr Bridge" Was Charles Joseph Bridge, who sailed out here on The Randolph, one of the first four ships. His farm was called Homebrook and in the beginning, consisted of 10,000 acres. The homestead was located a few km away from Southbridge on Jollies Rd. The land stayed in the Bridge Family until 1917 when it was all sold to the government to be divided up for returning servicmen from WWI.

The land the church stands on was donated by Bridge. The origional timber church was distroyed, the existing brick one was built in the early 30's. The old boy himself can be found in the grave yard. One of Bridge's sons, C.Hastings Bridge, was a Surveyor in partnership with George Hanmer

Been looking over the map and have figured out it takes an average of 14 posts and around an average of one day to find each tag, There have been 23 different people who have claimed tags. Transalper is the most obsessed with 16 tags so far followed by the only slightly less obsesive Guzza on 10.
Person most likely to be an insomniac goes to Guzza with about 1/2 of his posts after midnight.
I have caught myself thinking late at night more than once "I know where that is- I could just slip out once the kids are in bed and get that", Have resisted the urge so far!. When the trouble and strife gets home later that may change....:argue: :bye:

we have a "google documents" statistics sheet...we are now up to 150 tags, but mostly i think we operate in a smaller area than you guys, prolly no further than 90 kms from wellington. Our fastest tag has been 19 minutes sometimes we get three or four in a workday. We also have a tagger who regularly gets tags in the wee small hours
We just picked up or 24 th tagger i think with one addict on 21 tags...The google documents sorta resembles an excel sheet.I do most of the work on a excel sheet then upload it ,but a simpler one could be maintained by a group of people.

MacKenzie Thorp has built quite a business around the "lean on love" theme. Apart from the $60,000 brass statue, there are the little ones (which also cost an arm and a leg)and also various limited edition pastel prints. Theres a couple of other brass statues that make the set too.

Thorp is dislexic and Cookie time manage a charitable trust that supports dislexia in NZ so thats the common denominator.

I distinctly remember going through bridge-less on a vintage car club rally as a kid, mid-late eighties I'm thinking. I guess we could have been a few meters downstream in my hazy childhood memory, but I'm sure I remember it actually being a concrete road laid across the river bed there.

It wasn't very clear to me but I think the horse monument at West Melton was just to celebrate the areas association with horse racing... or something generically to do with the horse industry in the area.

At present I lift pix directly off my camera. I have the ability to do some basic editing there, including cropping. Is cropping important?

Transalper
17th August 2009, 14:23
Only to get rid of the extra surrounding bits you don't want to show (like street names).
I crop most my street view pics.

The key is when you have the view you want in Google Maps (or almost any other application) to hold down the [Alt] button and press/release the [Print Screen] Button (some keyboards just have [Prt Scrn] on them).
What that does is capture a screen shot of the current active window and stores it in the clipboard. You can just press [Print Screen] by itself but that will capture a picture of your whole screen including task bar if it's not hidden and anything else you may have showing.
Next you must open your picture software and past the screen shot in to it.
That may require you to make a new blank document and then past (may be done via menus Edit/Paste within the program.)
I like using Adobe Photoshop Elements in which I go to the menu 'File' and then it has a option to 'create new from clipboard' and it's ready to edit.
The rest should be as usual for a photo.

If you don't have anything to edit, crop, resize, compress pictures then you could go download this little free one... **assuming your using a windows PC**
Infranview.
I think Nelsons Nordieboy recommended it once.

A quick resize lesson for when the photos are just bigger than needed...
After you install that resizing is just a couple of clicks away.

After you save you picture from the camera to the PC you....
1- open your picture with Infranview.
2- Then click the word 'Image' in the menu list along the top and drop down the list that appears and click the words Resize/Resample'
3- Now you get a new little dialogue window where you can choose a new size. Just click the 800x600 Pixels (on the right side about 2nd down)

4- Click ok.

You could also adjust contrast/colour with this program, but one thing at a time I guess.

5- Now click the 'File' menu (up the top left).
In the dropdown list click 'Save (Original)'

There may be a little compression option window appear where you can move a slider to compress quality more but just having resized to 800x600 should make things ok for a starter.

6- Give it a new name if you don't want to overwrite the original.
7- Then click 'Save'
Your done.
The newly downsized photo will be ready to upload in a fraction of the time it was taking to upload the originals.

Cheers
TA.

The old Tai Tapu Libary on Old Tai Tapu rd.
some additional info:
Tai Tapu village is situated on the main highway to Banks Peninsula.

Although the main shops follow the highway, the visitor who turns from the highway towards the hills on the Old Tai Tapu Road can immediately savour the traditional charm of this village.

The building of St Paul’s Anglican Church and the old Tai Tapu Library (both completed in 1932) were largely funded by Sir Heaton Rhodes, who lived at nearby ‘Otahuna.’

A charming 15-20 minute walkway leads from the Church to the Domain, further down the Old Tai Tapu Road. A golf course, tennis and netball courts, a rugby field and an outdoor bowling green are some of the Domain’s amenities.

Funny thing happened today. Decided to go and look for a tag, all I had to go on was the background shot of the port hills. Oh well nice day for a ride, ended up at Tai Tapu, looked about right. However the desire for a coffee and a bite to eat was to strong so into the tai tapu cafe I go. Now picture this, sitting in the sun with a nice flat white and I hear the thump of a bike, look up as you do and see a yellow triumph make a left at the bridge, thats funny sounds like he's pulled over up the road a bit, think I can still hear it ticking over. Two minuets latter and hes back, right turn and he's heading back to town...Tag Gone:blink:

Annex road underpass.

Despite having lived within about 2 k of this for about 28 years this was the first time I'd ever been down there. Many years ago when I was on scooters and other 50cc things, wished I'd thought of this shortcut would have saved much strife coming over the motorway on those. Especially going towards the hills. Must remember it's there in rush hour, making that right on the motorway into curletts road is a bitch.

Certainly does appeal, even as a sealed road mission (The way of almost total dirt would add well over an hour or so to the trip.)
Pity I didn't see it earlier as I went cycling up Rapaki instead of tagging. Mind you after the Bluff mission there's a little fatigue set in, at least that's what I'm blaming my constant wobbling up Rapaki on.

It's unlikely the camera can light that up nicely with out extra lighting, even if it can be found easily at night.
If it's still alive on Friday, that is my best chance at a daylight shot, it just isn't important enough to get up early enough to get before work.

I didnt get the clue until I realized where it was.

Well its near the sea and hills are north along the coast so unless its kaikoura i think i have a vauge idea. just maybe the actual spot may prove tricky...

Yea, I burned some gas this arvo but failed.
Have a couple of ideas left but not likely to happen now as I used up my free daylight time.
Had a teriffic ride though and got in some dirt roads too ye ha.

Shadows
30th August 2009, 18:50
Certainly no dirt riding required, just a pleasant amble up the road.

Pretty sure i have got it figured out now, This one needs a bit of daylight though to do the photo justice I think. Had me stumped for a long time, It is about a 200K round trip from my place so don't think it will be happening tonight

Transalper

Didn't think there was any dirt involved, just had some handy dirt to use between places I thought I'd check.
I see the place PeterJ found and agree, it looks about right although that barrier must have taken a beating since google camera was through there.

North quite a fairway I think you'll find.

Way off.

I spent more time searching by two wheels than on google maps this time. By bike I dropped in to Governors Bay, scooted around to Diamond Harbour over to Purau, Port Levy, pigeon Bay then up to the Summit down to Duvauchelle. I can tell you none of the views out those areas will work.
Then I scooted back through Little river over Gebbies around the bays to Evans Pass and Sumner, out to the start of the hill climb to Taylors mistake.
Still wrong.
Then I went home and booted up the PC and google maps.
There wasn't many other choices and Shadows had since posted again.
Only took a few minutes after that to come up with the street view... but boy did I have a blast on the bike.

Ouch hope you are ok, worth a visit to the doctors even if it is just a sprain, its covered by ACC and if there is something worse out of it there is a record.

Stupid place, the Wairakei - Russley roundabout going straight through, dropped on the inside lane coming into the roundabout and stopped sliding in the gutter on the other side, bike jumped the curb a bit and did some digging with it's bars. Probably a fault in the bit of the bike that sits on the seat and holds the bars more than anything else.

Oh well, that's my crash cherry popped for my return to biking (and this was one of the more interesting I've had over the years I have to say), now for some damage assessment part hunting tomorrow, all part of the fun :Punk:

If there was lots of interest I guess there would be the sound of a mad race rather than an amble to pick to pick up this one.

You would have to be the maddest of the mad to win that mad race! Which makes me wonder how I won  329 MADras St. Those statues are pretty scary at night til you realise they are completley 'armless :)

Transalper

If they are really desparate they can go get the NZ Wide Tag, that'll take em 3 to 3.5 hours round trip.

Where is this old post office?

91 Hereford st.

Dont quote me on the post office bit it was just opened by a postmaster so i guess its a logical assumption. I actually didnt hang around to investigate due to the roadworkers staring at me taking a photo of my bike on the footpath at night...

Coming home from work yesterday about 6-630 I think, I saw a bike up on the curb and the rider talking on a mobile and looking over the bike. Looked more like a break down rather than step off but I looped the round a bout and came back to see if i could help. Was that you?
