I have my weekends back so I have started working on my Austin 7 racing car again. I wheeled it out from the car store and into the work area of the workshop and are into it.

There's a Herald at an engineer's down the road awaiting restoration. Looks to be in pretty excellent nick body wise, outside is straight looking (looks like rooted original paint) and the bulkhead is in pretty good condition for a Herald that is untouched.
Makes me need a classic again.

There's a 76 BMW 520 down south I really, really fancy (I had one a few years ago, NZ new 73, was a grouse car). Far better engineered car than the P6 was. But, that's not unexpected :msn-wink:

Hmmmm....... They cost much less than that when they were new...

Yeah, but you can't really make a direct comparison of price on old cars though. If they sold for say $3,500 in 1970, that would be around $53,000 today, adjusted for inflation (using the Reserve Bank calculator). So on those calculations the relative asking price is only around 12% of the "new cost".

Edit: It can be interesting doing relative cost comparisons. In 1948, the Jaguar XK120 sports car sold for 1,263 Pounds (say $2,600NZ). That cost, adjusted for inflation, is around $187,000. Puts the cost of a new Jaguar sports car in perspective, eh? A good XK120 sells for around $50,000 to $60,000 these days (around 30% of "new cost").

So did the Brits. As well as the year identifier the last two of the three letters also indicated where the vehicle was first registered. My old Cortina UCH was from Nottingham. Like what I am.

The Rover 75/MG ZT was developed by Rover when BMW owned them (after Honda and Rover had broken up), pretty much the last hoorah as it were.

I donno why, but I fucking love the look of the princess. Had I not put so much work into my landcrab I'd be tempted to sell it to get one.

Because you can do a clutch without pulling the engine out. If you've ever done a clutch on a 1800, this could be a big drawcard.

I hate to say it, but that was the only good vehicle to come from the BMW/ROVER thing.

Dealers were selling them at 40% off on the very week after the failure of the venture was announced.

After all this stuff was sorted and BMW gave out a heap of cash to take the lemon off their hands, Rover was one of my clients up at Warwick University. What a fiasco that was and run by a bunch of know nothing morons. They let the Indians have all their R&D data before the rescue deal was signed. The Indians then said "thanks for the free IP and goodbye. We got what we wanted and it was FOC" :brick:

Still..... at least the directors got their gravy train pensions sorted out before the collapse. Dumb arse know nothing selfish shit for brains wankers.

You reckon the 1.7L is better? on that note, I've never seen a 1.7L wedge for sale here in NZ. Plenty of 2.0L ones, have only seen 1.8Ls in the last year or so.

I prefer the 1.8L as I know the engine and it's virtually a landcrab, but pointy.

Hey Ed, that's spot on. I had the 1700 engine in my 1979 Marina and apart from the front shocks being too soft (as standard), the engine was super and as quick as most of my friends 2.0 power units. I advanced the timing by 10% on mine, as I was very much a higher revs driver in those days, because I was young and stupid. OK.. OK.. Younger and Stupider :shit:.

I drove one like that once in a grasskhana.

The big deal was that it had been converted to left-hand drive by 'flopping' the rack&pinion and column.

So it went right when you turned left.

The passenger operated the pedals and gear-stick, 'driver' just steered remembering to turn the wheel left for a right turn.

GREAT fun, especially after after a jar or two...:msn-wink:.

Nicer to drive than a Jag, mainly because most were autos and power steer. A Jag with no power steering and a truck gearbox is not easy to drive. And Edward Turner designed the engine, that's enough reason for a biker to want one.

I used to love my mother's old '66 Mk1. Beautiful and comfy on a long trip. A bit tricky on the gravel roads though, with front wheel drive, radial tyres and power disc brakes. You had to get used to it after the old rear drive Humber 80 with 15" crossply's.

My Bro-in-law used to do them up for dirt track racing. Locked in 2nd gear, solid drive universals and heavily worked motor. Was very successful esp. because of the side mounted radiator being well protected from accident damage. Plus being built like a tank! :niceone:

Great on a trip, with no body roll, and great on gravel roads too. We built a house at Onetangi on Waiheke Island, and had to go up Seaview Rd, a very neglected road (also part of the TT course) and our Singer Vogue (Hillman Hunter) would be axle tramping all the way up in 2nd gear, no way could you get into 3rd. I tried several cars up there, even a Mercedes, then tried an 1800 - and it could go up in 3rd gear, smooth as...so I bought it, my second MkI Austin 1800. The hydrolastics really show their advantage in a long wheelbase, the Mini was too short for them.

My father had one of those; the previous owner was a farmer who used it as a farm truck, caring sheep and hay in the back of it. It needed quite a lot of cleaning.
I learned to drive in it, and took my driving test in it (at 15). The cop took me round the Government Gardens in Rotorua, and got me to do manoeuvres that just weren't possible, like a 3-point turn on a road slightly wider than the car. I passed anyway, but only just.
Bike test was easier - cop said, "Is that red bike (CB175) yours? Meet me in the carpark, and we'll go for a blat!"
My father nearly toasted the 1800 because he was still driving the fooker even though he was almost blind. Sold it to my eldest sister, and bought an Austin Maxi. That was MUCH easier to spin up...

Well I looked at a TVR Griffith yesterday, but you need to apply for an NZ special import licence for those and the quota's all used up.

The car I am most likely to bring back is a 4.8ltr 2005 BMW X5 with an LPG Conversion. I've not seen a good enough one yet, but they really are soooooo cheap that I could bring one back, sell it, and then get the XK8R that I ultimately desire. The TVR's are great but won't cut the mustard in terms of practical NZ driving

Thanks for that, we'll have a browse.

I usually shop at Turners Auctions, good for getting 3 to 4 year old ex-lease vehicles at a fraction of their retail value. I bought my 2006 BF Falcon in 2010 for $8K, retail value $14-$15K. You've just got to be prepared to wait for the right vehicle on the right day - the Falcon took almost a year of watching and waiting.

I gotta ask why you think landrovers are hard to work on. IMHO they are easy to work on,

Designed and built when labour was cheap, they weren't concerned about easy access or how things were to be worked on in later life. They are labour intensive to work on, twiddling spanners because you can't get a ratchet let alone air tools into where you need to get. A lot of it is good simple basic engineering with the knowledge and tooling of the time. I worked on a lot of Series IIA's in the '90's, before the Jap's got their 4x4's sorted, they were well worn but still serviceable.
