...If it's the same engine as was in the 3.2 sport (which I think it is) it was very very good indeed when I had one as a company car in the early to mid 90s.
I am presuming that the 4.0 was in the later models, which may be a little larger than I would like...
Nah, the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine was all new for the X308 model, available in 3.2, 4.0 and 4.0 supercharged versions. It spelt the end of the XJ6 and XJ12 models.
The biggest problem was the Nikasil-coated cylinder liners. Great for race cars, but prone to failure in longer-term usage. They were a brief (but sorry) problem.
The later X350 / X358 XJ (the first with the aluminium body) had the larger 3.5 and 4.2 V8s, along with a 3.0 V6 (the return of the XJ6).

In the UK, the Ford V6 (Essex) was quite a common cheap swap out (2.5l or 3.0l out of a Capri) until the 3.5 V8 later became the standard. From what I remember from a mate's Stag, the engine mountings were almost identical and didn't need much effort to install. The gearbox was another issue all together :shit:

Jags were always a complete no no for me, mainly due to the lack of rear seating space. LWB changes that and having had positive Jag experiences in the 90s, I really do believe them to be great value.
As for the Morris Oxford on two wheels, that would have made a great Youtube moment  If it was a 1952 model, that would have been the bubble shaped one? The later one looked more like an Austin Cambridge.

Sorry mate, you can't buy new cars with cross plies, vaccuum operated wipers, and Lucas "prince of darkness" electrics anymore, lol. Seriously, what are you looking for? I'm always teasing the mostly Aussie crew I work with by bringing up Tard Me bargains, and they can't believe what we have available for next to nix. They're out there, you just have to widen your horizons.
I thought I'd never ever be interested in a 4WD, let alone a stinkin' diesel but had my preconceptions blown out of the water just before Chrissy. Wandering around Melbourne I chanced upon a test drive in an Audi Q7 6.0L TDi V12. Fuck me, does 500hp and 1000Nm of torque change your mind as to what a block of flats is capable of. Completely out of my price bracket, but absolutely mind altering. First diesel I've ever come across that actually sounded good too. I've just gotta wait 10 years for it to become affordable now, lol. :wait:
I'll stick with me 7-litre!
I'm with you brutha! 5.8 in my case, but why the poms insisted on their girly wee engines has got me stuffed. Carroll Shelby pointed them in the right direction back in '61 but they never picked up the ball and ran with it.

Yeah, didn't work too well for Jaguar though. As I understand it, the cylinder liners on some of those XJ8s were eaten away by some petrol additives. Jag replaced many motors under warranty, but many lesser affected cars became liabilities for success owners.

All this discussion about classic cars from our nostalgic past (sorry, not you, Indi...), is great fun. All the talk of ripping out motors and dropping in V8s is a great trip down memory lane.
But would you do it now? If you picked up a mint factory Triumph 2500TC tomorrow, would you "hot it up" like you did back in the day? Or keep it - and drive it - as it was built (warts 'n all)?
Let's face it, if it's speed and handling you want, most modern shit boxes will piss all over our nostalgia trips. I've got a late model (BF) Falcon, it would wipe the floor with most old V8s, particularly handling-wise. But as much as I love it, it's got no character - it's "just a car".

It's funny because a BF Falcon is by no means fast or good handling. An E39 BMW 5 series Msport will run rings around one all day and is still of higher quality build, ride quality, brakes....gruniter....

Yep, stock unit - one of the first XJ12s:
The XJ12 version was announced in July 1972, featuring simplified grille treatment, and powered by a 5.3 L V12 engine (coupled to a Borg Warner Model 12). The car as presented at that time was the world's only mass-produced 12-cylinder four-door car, and, with a top speed "around 140 mph" (225 km/h) as the "fastest full four-seater available in the world today".
Although it had, from the car's launch, been the manufacturer's intention that the XJ would take the twelve-cylinder engine, its installation was nonetheless a tight fit, and providing adequate cooling had evidently been a challenge for the engineers designing the installation. Bonnet/hood louvres such as those fitted on the recently introduced 12-cylinder E Type were rejected, but the XJ12 featured a complex "cross-flow" radiator divided into two separated horizontal sections and supported with coolant feeder tanks at each end: the engine fan was geared to rotate at 1¼ times the speed of the engine rpm, subject to a limiter which cut in at a (fan) speed of 1700 rpm. The fuel system incorporated a relief valve that returned fuel to the tank when pressure in the leads to the carburetters exceeded 1.5 psi in order to reduce the risk of vapour locks occurring at the engine's high operating temperature, while the car's battery, unusually, benefited from its own thermostatically controlled cooling fan.
3,235 of these first generation XJ12s were built...

It look like that particular one has been quite severely butchered over the years. Who knows though - may be recoverable, eh?

My guess it is a TC with later trimmings, thats what I did with mine, the S has mags, or it was a PI but with a 77 grill.

Updates on the Jag!!!!!!
I'm still thinking of getting an XJ40 once I'm a bit more financially secure, cheap and they're very nice.
For me, the XJ40 was first of the new reliable breed of Jags.
Regarding my potential XJ8, I seem to have cocked up quite badly. My wife was happy for me to talk about me popping out for a couple of hours tomorrow to take a casual look at a car I am not really interested in and might only consider making an offer if it was an outstanding example at a bargain price.
She played along for a while before reminding me that tomorrow is our sons 1st Birthday party :shit:
She seems to be letting me decide what I want to do and I therefore might need some female imput from your wives/partners?
Me thinks: It's a kids party for one year olds. It's not his actual birthday, that's on Tuesday (I'll be in Wellington). Surely I'd only get in the way with drinking beer and gorping at the other mums huge breasts. Surely the party will be better without me there as dads are not invited?
BUT I do get the feeling that if I was to prance around filling glasses and taking photographs (she said that might be nice), I'd score some serious (XJ8 worthy)brownie points?
I could be wrong, but I do get the feeling that if I am not there, she might get quite angry?
One option I have thought of is getting Indy round and stating that the entire mix-up is all his fault. After she's slapped him a few times, all will probably be OK (for me) and I'll owe Indy a L A R G E beer
As my wife isn't giving me any clear guidance, what should I do?

I'm not the best at the whole women thing, I just speak my mind and they leave...My last missus said "me or the bike" and I asked for a "fuck off root". She was appalled and left. So...my advice wouldn't be good here....

For me, the XJ40 was first of the new reliable breed of Jags...
Yeah, the XJ40 was the first move away from the embarrassing grasp of British Leyland, and the contemptuously militant workforce which drove down quality and reliability at that time. The quality issues with the Series 3 XJ is the stuff of legend.
The restyling represented that move forward - shame the XJ40 was so fugly though. The '80s square box fashion meant there was little to differentiate the Jag from countless other square shit-boxes.
The X300 project couldn't come soon enough, with the return to the "classic" jag look.
...As my wife isn't giving me any clear guidance, what should I do?
Mate, no clear guidance is a serious warning sign - it's an unspoken line in the sand, and you're expected to know what to do, without being told.

Incidentally, the issue with the Nikasil cylinder liners is mentioned on Wikipedia:
...Between 1998 and 2000, Jaguar used Nikasil cylinder liners which in markets with sulphur rich fuel combined with short trips, resulted in accelerated engine wear and eventually premature engine failure. From 2000 to 2003 the engines were fitted with conventional steel liners which solved the problem...
However, my Haynes Jaguar book suggests that the problem was limited to the 3.2L V8...? The one you're looking at is the 4.0L V8.

Nikasil is only an issue with low quality-high sulfur petrols. Like cheap petrol in the states for example. Being BMW mad I've looked into this when looking at M60 V8's and M52 6cyls. I have not yet seen a Nikasil related problem in NZ. The later BMW M60/M52 went to Alusil, far better.

Actually, I don't mind the S-Type, although I probably wouldn't buy one. The extreme case of retro-styling is either loved or hated.
I don't particular like the X-type, which is basically a Ford Mondeo with a different body shell and motor. Big Jag looks, which fail to deliver.

I can't stand the S-type, it leaves much to be desired. I've driven every model with the exception (excretion?) of the "normal" V8, the S-type R was nice, shit did it have berries under the bonnet. Wouldn't buy one...an BMW M5 will rip it in half and is a better car in every single way.

We’ll there’s this Jag I am really keen on checking out AND………………..”
“Oh babe, you want a Jag. That’s nice. I guess you will be 50 next year. Of course you can get a Jag if that’s what you want………………. But have you considered how you would get it up the drive and into the garage?”
WTF!!!!!!! – She knows nothing about cars except for their colour and how many wheels they have.

If it does scrape, I (being of kind heart and stuff) will take it home and it can play with the Kawasaki and MR2 in my garage :shifty: I have a very flat driveway so there's no risk of your Jag getting scraped.

Next project, moving house to one with a drive that won’t scuff the underside of a Jag
But how could I be sure the drive was OK if I didn't first have a Jag?
Some golden rules of mine for house buying:
1. Drive must be as flat and as straight as possible ('cos some of my cars are bloody low)
2. Drive must not lead directly out onto busy road (Duh!)
3. House must be as maintenance-free as possible (don't want to waste riding/driving/tinkering time, do we?
4. Section must not be (a) step or (b) in a gully. (Don't want to risk another Abbotsford)
5. Nowhere near the sea (salt air and cars/bikes:no:)
6. Not down on some flat flood-prone area.
Follow the above and be happiness-blessed.

Hmmmm... While not fitting too well with these criteria, we do have a large internal access double garage which can fit two cars and a motorbike, and total off-street parking can fit nine vehicles. We looked at downsizing but finding a smaller home with a big internal access garage and off-street parking for at least two vehicles is virtually impossible here!

You may have better results in your area, but as we do have a nice house in a nice area and can't be built out and the upstairs flat is very handy, we've decided to stay where we are. The weekend emphasised the need for lots of space when the family plus friends all come for a BBQ... :Offtopic:

AND at the same time she has managed get me to say, "now’s not the right time for a Jag."
I just find it hard to understand why I had failed to realise the steep drive access from the road would be a problem and it took my wife to point this out to me (without attempting to deny me what I wanted to buy).
We have a great garage. Room for 2 full sized cars and 2 bikes, plus a little workshop.

Lol. Okay, my turn:
"Hey, you know that XJ8 I was drooling over? I posted a link on KB, and YellowDog was really keen on it too."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. He's found a good one in Auckland though - if it checks out okay he's going to get it - he's got the blessings of his other half."
"Are you dropping hints again?"
"...Not really, still dreaming and scheming I suppose..."
"You've been promising me a new car for three years, in that time you've got yourself a new car, updated both work vehicles for the employees, and I'm still stuck in a scruffy old 1995 Bluebird."
With a grin, I give the perfect response - "Tell you what, I'll get the Jag, you can have my nice shiny Falcon."
"I don't want your Ford Falcon, I want a hatchback."
Damn...
"Ah, okay, I could sell the Falcon, eh? I can't afford that and the Jag, particularly with all the work fleet to maintain."
"So you would effectively be using the Jag for work? Have you given any thought to how it would look to clients, particularly as you're putting prices up across the board? How would you get on going to site meetings at construction sites?"
"I could borrow your hatchbatch, I suppose..."
The conversation ended there...

Agreed that the Agro is not a cool car. Not even a classic. But having known an owner who raved about it and praised it to the hilt, they can't have been all that bad.

I'm in to that idea. A Toledo would be even sillier though

And when they tried to go around a corner... Too much weight from that really heavy motor, too far forward! Fabulous for doing burnouts, though...
We had a 1980 Marina, the last of the model with the 1700 Alloy head motor and it was a nice car to travel in, very comfortable, torquey and economical, lots of room.

Hey, I had the same model. In 1981 I bought a 1979 Marina 1700, which was the last shape just before the ITAL, being a slightly modded Marina. It was the newest car I had ever owned and I was stoked with it.
Good engine (for a 1700). I advanced the timing and put a larger pipe and free flow air filter on mine. Unfortunately I didn't have enough cash to uprate the brakes or shocks. It didn't corner very well at all  But it was a good car

If I knew she wanted to come, I would have invited her instead of you
No I didn't go. My missus is happy for me to get a Jag, as she believes that I am now old enough to carry off the image thing, but we both agree that our drive won't take a Jag. It looks like we are now moving house to a place with a Jag friendly drive. But having enough money for a Jag after the move is another story :shit:

I was always worried about the P6, it never leaked any oil. How the fuck does a British car retain oil? It was strange.
My P6B made up for it. Little issue with the rear main crankshaft seal. Great car though.

Its funny I had a chat with a "boffin" a while ago about this. He reckoned the Allegro was a fantastic car for the time and place.
My answer was:
Toyota Corona or Colt GTO or Ford Cortina or Vauxhall Chevette or......

Our one's shocks were still good, but they really benefitted from aftermarket. The originals were supposed to be twin arm but they fitted single arm instead and they wore prematurely. My brakes were very good as we found out one day when a kid ran out in front of us at an intersection... :shit:
I really liked the 1700 motor, I recall travelling up the old Albany hill one day and a 2lt Mk.3 Cortina couldn't pull away from us! No, it wasn't a sports car, it was a sedate family car but ours was in very good condition and we really liked it.

It just missed the mark I reckon, had the build quality been good then things might of been different. The styling wasn't bad, not out of place for the time (ignoring the 'wheel' lol), used a proven power plant from the ADO16, granted it should of been something a bit newer, but they used the A series engine till 2000!
Anyways should be lookin' at an ADO16 this weekend :)

Nope, don't intend to any time soon.
I'm not a fan of 'big' cars, anything over 2L is too big for me

It's alright, Indy, you're young still - one day you'll grow up to be an old fart like DL...
