Just spent 10 minutes chatting with an old guy at the Birkenhead shops with a beautiful silver Triumph Stag. A stunning example.
I said, "surely this is not in original condition", as I'd noticed one or two minor blemishes on the front wing welds. He said that "it couldn't be original as Metalic Silver was not an option when he bought her". He said that he had her resprayed 7 years ago and has otherwise just been looking after her well and has kept the car as original as possible.
"not the engine though, I asked"
"It has its original engine and original gearbox for 319,000 miles, and still going strong."
He says he suspect that Triumph had crap owners, rather than crap engines and gearboxes, back in the early days

"Harry Webster had also already started development and testing of a new unique, all Triumph designed overhead cam (OHC) 2.5 litre fuel injected (PI) V8 to be used in the Stag, large saloons and estate cars. The vision was to allow Triumph to compete in the V8 marketplace. Under the direction of Harry Webster's replacement, Spen King in 1968, the new Triumph OHC 2.5 PI V8 was enlarged to 2997 cc (3.0 litre) to increase torque and the troublesome fuel injection dropped in favour of dual Zenith-Stromberg 175 CDSE carburettors to meet emission standards in one of the target markets the USA."

Virago
29th August 2011, 21:07
I don't think the 2.5 V8 actually went into production? While the V8 was originally developed as a 2.5, it was enlarged (by reboring) to 3.0L late in the development phase, well before the Stag was launched.
The reboring actually caused many of the V8's overheating problems, by causing critical areas of reduced water-flow.
Edit - beaten by Scummy...

The Stag V8īs can be made reliable now, modern antifreeze synthetic oils aftermarket chains and tensioners. As I understand the design was sound but penny pinching in the manufacturing and outsourcing caused a lot of the early issues.

Even if it did you'd have to reverse a head so the intake is in the vee, could be interesting though, I love old multi cam motor always look grouse, the Alfa unit in that TR I posted looked horn, twin carbs off the side  Sounded even better.

Its the old english horse power not BHP. My Austin 7 (race car) used to be 23bhp it now produces 35 but it only weighs 350kg, its great fun to drag off young blokes in Starletts in a 80 year old car.
This would be a great vintage car, but it will never be able to keep up with modern traffic.

whats you budget Indy? coz i've got your new car waiting...
the family has finally decided to sell the old girl.
1964 Austin Mini (reg Jan 65). I'll check with dad for the mileage when i see him tomorrow but is less than 80 original miles. Completely original, and only 3 owners. Serviced and maintained from 1970 by the same mechanic (dad).
This is the history, it's original owner was a lady who used my dads workshop to service the car until she wasn't able to drive anymore in the early nineties. My father always said to her "when you are no longer able to drive it, he would buy it". That happened in due course and we had the car for about 10 years before selling it to mums sister, who still has it now (so the original owner + 1 family). It's not getting used as much as it should be so it's time to move it on. Lucky you!

Yes I can confirm that unfortunately you are indeed sick.
My 1981 Red Convertable was my pride and joy. It looked "The Business" I was earning lots of cash at the time, which was quite fortunate.
Three and a half engines later, I sold it just before the gearbox gave out.
Having now met a Stag owner with 318,000 miles on the original engine and gearbox, I guess that TR7 drivers could well also be the problem with the stock engine. The American's really liked the design of the car but concluded that it needed rebuilding between the fenders.
If you do find a seemingly good one, watch out for flat spots between 4000 and 6000 RPM.
The Fiat X19 is a terrible example of an Italian copycat and a pretty poor car all round. BUT streets ahead of the TR7 in the reliability stakes.

I had the chance of replacing my TR7 2.0 ltr lump with a 3.5 V8 out of a written off Rover.
Regrettably I didn't do it as I was assured that the 2.0 OEM unit was perfectly balanced for the car. Also, I wasn't so sure about upgrading the brakes and shocks.

Riley was one of those classic English marques that always turns heads.
If I were to get a Riley, it would be a 1500 Saloon. The last time I drove one, it was a very fast and a nicely finished piece of kit.

My mum had one of those Riley Elfs for about 20 years. It never gave a single bit of trouble, not even a new battery. It was driven by us boys so didn't get an easy life. Fantastic car and vastly superior to a Mini - worth it for the varnished woodgrain dash.
OK guys, here's the holy grail of British cars in NZ - a MK2 Riley Kestrel (Morris 1300 based). It was a giant killer of a car. I remember Rod Collingwood racing one at Pukekohe and beating the V8 Valiants in it - kept pace with them down the back straight at Pukekohe and blew them away through the windy bits. I was at Puke that day and no-one could believe that a bloody "Morry 1300" could do that. But the Kestrel was far from a Morry 1300....
This is a post from Angus Fogg's dad, Gerald, from the Roaring Season website (http://www.theroaringseason.com/showthread.php?192-The-Mike-Feisst-Collection-Part-5&p=5308#post5308) (a kiwi motorsport nostalgia website and a bloody good one.) If you follow the link there is a photo of the car in the Silver Fern rally.
Bob, they were quite a car. From the storey by Wayne Harris in Classic Driver. Rod Collingwood traded his Cooper in on a brand new Riley 1300 from Moller Motors. In Collingwoods opinion this was a vastly underated car....NZ assembled and only 72 built. Similar to the Fiat 125T...a NZ model only. A 5th outright in the Glenvale 100 at Baypark and 2nd in class to Frank Radisch's Escort 1300GT, certainly raised a few eyebrows. Things were to get better when Alan Boyle of Coca-Cola Viva fame, teamed up with Rod at Levin. Alan drove the first stint and worked his way through the Valiants and the Victors, and anyone who thought Baypark was a fluke was witnessing a remarkable little car. While in the outright lead, Boyle had a moment and spun at cabbage-tree, losing a full minute. The Riley came second outright behind Gary Sprague and Barry Cottle in the 125T. The last production race of the season saw a star entry at Pukekohe....the first 3 placings went to 125T's of Emson, Fahey, and Marwood, with Don Davies Victor in 4th and Collingwood in 5th ahead of Rick Rimmer in the Valiant V8!!!!!!! How good was that little car.....wonder where it is today. Let us know if you find any photos Bob.....I would be interested.

The car was in production from 1965 to 1971 in the UK. I'd put the Collingwood Mk2 version (70bhp) at 72 or 73 so local production must have continued longer than in the UK. I'll keep searching to see if I can find more specific info.

If you get a TR7 and do a proper TR8 conversion, you'll have a pretty reasonably good car (apart from the switch gear).
The convertables are far better looking, though they do leak, and have a reinforced chassis (to stop them bending) which makes for a more solid ride.
Knowing what I now know and having the huge benefit of hindsight, I might foolishly consider another as a project
