Metservice says it's going to rain 10 am on the dot but the other sites say itl be fine, don't know who to believe, room for another rider?
Always room for another rider, Wouldn't trust Metservice they don't know what the weather is doing until they've asked someone who walked in from outside.

If in doubt and worried about getting wet then pack your waterproofs just in case.
Every one is invited, if they weren't then we'd have arranged the ride offline and you simply would not know about it.

Perfect day for it, nice to see some new faces.
Sad to see the group fracture with a couple of riders missing turns, one early on and another straight after lunch, I could see him miss the turn from the cafe while I was still messing about getting on my bike. I guess it's a risk when we aren't all familiar with each other or the area.
Seemed we were a little less organised but that could partly be that several riders had their own idea of what they wanted to do.
I'm a little disappointed to have made the effort to pack lunch and ended up in the part of the group that had not. Lunch at 'the Hand of God' on Camerons track sounded good, I caught up with that half of the group later on when I split away at the top of Pipers.

Splendid day guys, nice to meet you all! That was me riding straight past the left turn after lunch, I had a hunch that maybe I should take the left but couldn't see any riders up there, should have stopped and waited for you Transalper. By the time I'd satisfied myself that I'd Definitely lost the group I thought it was probably too late to turn and catch up.
I packed a lunch too, but my thermos Disintegrated during the ride and those chunky steak pies where very well marketed by a couple of the guys, had to try one, pretty bloody good!!
I took summit road back to chch, pretty much retraced our route up there.
Starting to feel a lot more comfortable on the KLR after today, now I just need to swap the ski pants and gloves for some proper gear!

I don't know which version is called Summer but I'll likely be in.
For those new to ADV riding a small something to consider if you haven't already got sorted... about tools, I have no idea who has what but generally we can fix most common problems on the tracks except you need your own Wheel Axle Nuts tools and Spark plugs tool as those are quite bike specific so please carry those if nothing else.
Spark plug tools may be needed any time we mess up a river crossing. Axle nut tools any time you get a puncture. Your own spare tube(s) and/or puncture repair kits are good too but not as important as the bike specific tools.
There's whole threads on that stuff so I'll leave it at that. :niceone:

Hi Guys
Went riding today at the Whiterock Trail Ride, 7 awesome Enduro deviations.
It was fundraiser for North Loburn School and with 671 riders the school will receive a huge boost for funding, very pleasing.
Open paddocks of speedies and tight enduro deviations for us slowbies
Awesome ride, awesome weather, lots of swearing.
Was the best trail ride I have been on in ages

Still on for Sunday if the weather is reasonable?...
It's looking ok to start, bring wet weather gear to cover the possibilities... or just as an extra wind stopping warmth layer.
I imagine lunch at a cafe this time likely to be Cheviot or Cluverden, usually Cheviot on this route.
Had to look back to see what the where and when was...

So, a question. If I were to sell my drz400 due to a temporary cashflow crisis, what should I replace it with when said crisis has passed?
Really liking the longer range adventure stuff, not really into the tighter mx type riding, so interested in some thoughts
Transalper
22nd June 2015, 21:46
A DRZ400 with a big tank.
I like the longer range easy stuff too but the WR is always good when it gets muddy even if that is just a small section of the ride weekend. All worth while when I get to that bit.
I don't do much past a grade 2 on the Transalp now days even if that small bit of mud is on the other side or far end of the island.
DR650 with big tank, wind shield and seat mod for a cheap very good all rounder. Everything else has more focus one way or other and often seems to cost more, not that I pay much attention now days.
Dr z-tard
22nd June 2015, 23:47
I feel the same, I like my drz400 due to the light weight agile nature of the bike but the little tank and the pain in the ass seat are a problem I wouldn't mind something more refined to ride maybe with a 6th gear and a more athsteicaly pleasing front headlight perhaps even a wind sheild to collect bugs, maybe I should be looking at a vstrom or equivalent as my next but for now I'm more than happy. Different strokes I guess good luck

So not much advance on a DRZ400 with a bigger tank, better seat and a 6th gear. the question is does it exist??
I was hoping for some temporary pain for a longer term gain, otherwise it's keep what I've got, suck it up money wise and carry on.
thought I could see an opportunity for an upgrade........
Dr z-tard
23rd June 2015, 00:28
On some of the spec sheets they say next drz400/650 has a 6 gear but I think that was a typo, it depends what you want to be doing on it, do you want something raw for mud, gravel, performance, or something more comfortable for longer trips that can hold more gear for adventure, extended trips or camping? Do you care about the weight of the bike or want something more solid and practical? Do you want a wr450f or ktm 450 exc or do you want a Dakar or vstrom etc. What motivates you?

Well I am going throw in a big curve ball, I have a 2010 DR650 with a 17 litre tank, it is a good bike BUT it is F&%king heavy so I have gone the other way and got a Beta 498, 113kg, hydraulic clutch, 6 speed, 13 litre tank, it will sit all day at open road speed and it really shines on shingle roads and adventure riding because of low weight, it is much easier to manage for me, like all bikes they get heavier during the day as you get tired but I can ride all day with our being punished by a truck sized bike.
Even worse is when you go away with some gear on board the weight goes up fast.

They've made 52 so far. It's going to be a superb adv ride. No deposit paid. A well appointed model would be 18 to 20k NZD plus shipping. That's just too expensive for a 450 single. I'm waiting for the crf 1000l Africa Twin later thid year.

I vote DR650, I'm on a budget and after 3 DRZ400's (1 sm and 2 e models) the dr650 has taken me more places than any other bike. Sure it's a bit porky but it's a lot easier in the mud than the 950 adventure I owned and the open road confort is far superior than the thong like drz's. I got lucky though, I found a near new one at the right price with the TM40. Never expected it to be as good as it is given it's budget build. The truth is you have to build the right adv bike not buy one.

DR650 = aesthetically pleasing? :laugh:
Whatever does the trick though! I'd own one.
That Beta looks pretty bad a$$.
I got a WR450 instead of a DRZ400, freakin love it, however, it also lacks a 6th gear so 1st/2nd mucho tallo when you gear it for the road I reckon.
Depending on funds/relationship status/Ken Ring predictions next time around I want to take a good looks at a WR250R. They are getting brilliant reviews across the board as far as economy (range), sturdiness (got sub frame built for your pie collection), reliability and surprisingly, highway 'crusibility' (despite preconceptions of widdle 250s).
As for screens and seats, I wouldn't buy a bike based on that. You can fix problems like that easily on any bike.

They have a remarkable wattage output from the stator too, you can run all the heated stuff and other accessories you can afford to buy and some with them.
I know this to be fact, everyone ridden with me from mid last winter and again recently can back me up on that though I've just started playing with battery powered clothes for trips with more gates and other on/off bike stuff... but then that's straying off topic a bit. :p

Hi guys, so heres a possible option that may or may not suit. I have sorted access to a bay on the South side of the Peninsula which Geordie said sounds like a good addition, it would make a great place to have lunch (after grabbing it from Little River on the way through). RMOTO is doing some scouting on another cool route Saturday and the goal is to put together something a little different for a loop route. The only issue is, 10:30 is pretty late, probably too late to get in a decent full day ride. We'd pretty much need to head off around 9:30am at the latest from Z Colombo Street if we don't want to be riding home in the dark.
If that sounds like a possible plan I'll catch up with RMOTO later on Saturday and post up some more details.
fyi as much as we would love the rocket site to be something spectacular, it is pretty much an empty paddock with a bunch of stuff piled up. Visiting Carl's backyard would offer a similar experience =)

We hadn't done an adventure ride for a while so we loaded the bikes on to the trailer and drove on up to White Rock, not bargaining on there being several inches of snow! Decided to venture up the road to assess the conditions. It was not too hairy, so we carried on up and over the pass and down to the farm (past the second stream crossing). It was a ride to remember. So beautiful.
We weren't the only people nutty enough to venture up the pass on two wheels - we came across two nutters on mountain bikes!

Was posting in Meeting and Events but no one else ever showed up so thought I'd try here incase anyone here was interested.
Meet outside the Halswell Vets at 5pm, we'll be eating by 6.

If I'm flying solo I can make Halswell by 5 (just), if Mrs wants to come for a ride no chance, hence why I haven't been joining until now.

We made it 5pm because it has us sitting down at the Pub at a more civilised hour and no one else was showing up at the later time we started with anyway. Can always meet us at the Pub 'when you get there'. I don't mind if you talk while eating, we don't rush off as soon as we're done.

3 of us out tonight. I got held up at work so was a bit rushed after pumping up a lowish front tyre so skipped the fuel top up. Unfortunately on the last trip my speedo stopped working so I wasn't totally sure how much gas was in the tank. I since fixed it or so it seemed and surely there's enough to get there and back again, it's not that far. Well it turns out that the old Transalps reserve will not get me all the way back from near the Little River pub to the next open garage in Halswell. Nope, after tipping the bike in Taitapu I made it to the first set of lights which I half coasted, half paddled through in sight of that next open garage about 300 meters down the road. Happy to say the bike rolls nice on the footpath and after 2 different people in cars stopped to offer assistance with in that 300 meters stretch I got the gas I needed at the garage and she runs again... Oh and the speedo stopped at the pub again, all good until I reversed it seems, probably the little plastic gears in the hub.

We went in from Harrs Rd and did the North side of the Waimak, for me it looks so strange now with all those trees cut down. Ended up doing Kiri Kiri Rd and Eyre Ford even though the signs said it was closed, which is more fun than riding down Depot Rd into Oxford.
When we got to the river we had a secret weapon "Matt" on his WR and he did a number of crossings, so we got an idea of how deep it was and made our crossings safely.

Yes, quite possibly misjudged that one
Who's up for a ride around Bank Peninsula the Weekend of 5th Dec, weather is just getting better and better.

Have a good run tomorrow!
Thought I'd check out Lees Valley on Sunday if anyone's keen? I rode a snippet of it a few weeks back, but was short on time so turned around. How long would the full loop take from Christchurch normally? With say a 30 min food stop somewhere?

I won't be along today.
Lees Valley times... well the Lees Valley itself takes around 1.5 to 2 hours generally though I'm sure it's taken longer on occasion with big groups and lots of talking.
The trip to and back would depend upon whether you go the shortest highway route or bend it to include the Waimak or other back roads.
The direct highway is something like 40 minutes between Belfast and Whiterock, same Belfast to Oxford, double if you take the Waimak.
The good news is the river ford in the middle (Okuku Fox Creek) is nice and low at 0.53 cumecs this morning.

Cheers!... I imagine I'll be stopping a bit on my first trip, good to know whats average though... Yesterdays wine & food fest took more of a toll on today than I expected , so didn't make it out.... on the agenda for next weekend if the river looks okay.

Ha ha, seems there's several people round here that don't make it for that reason, you are the only one I know of this weekend though, the rest of us have better reasons... like watching TV. Ok not really.
Don't know what the average flow is but with friends along for backup we'd still have a good go at crossing with 5 cumecs flowing.

Fair call... company/back-up makes all the difference I guess... RM puts 1-3 cumecs in the "safe" zone, bloody handy resource that!

Yeah that was me on Remotemoto. Found out the hard way for Birdlings flat. Hope to see you on another trip. Still not sure if I can make tomorrow yet. Would like to if I can.
That crossing from Birdlings Flat to Bossu Road is now displayed on Remote Moto as the Lake Forsyth Causeway (http://www.remotemoto.com/articles/lake-forsyth-causeway/).
Few good pictures showing it too.

Heading out to Lees Valley on Tue 29 Dec... If anyone's keen suggest meet at The Peg (Main North Road) at 10am. River looks nice and low presently.
Also in the next week or so keen to head out to Lake Coleridge and take the Double Hill Run / Lake Heron Road around the base of Mt Hutt and Mt Taylor... I've downloaded the route on RM, would be keen to hear any advice on that one... Also assume it's quite do-able in a day if you leave earlyish (8-9am)... Flexible on dates if anyone's keen to do that one too.
Merry Christmas all! :banana::banana:

True... I'm thinking people are either out of town, or too full of beer and mince pies... I'm the latter, but just itching to get out :)
Cheers, I think the river is about as low as it gets, so hopefully within capabilities... Hopefully catch you on a ride soon!

Great run through Lees Valley yesterday, the river was fun (and easy), so much fun that once I got over I set up the camera to catch me coming through a 2nd time (kinda got to capture your first river crossing.... even if it is more of a big stream).
I did skid out and loose it early on one of the gravel roads, the fall dislodged the wiring for a USB charger I'd (poorly) installed recently and 10 minutes later shorted the battery and blew my main fuse. It was a fairly simple roadside repair but man the relief when the electrics came back alive!

Fucking idiot ruins it for the rest of us. A definite wanker that has to post of his trophy ride, running a bike in, so he does it at the expense of ruining an area he shouldn't be in anyway...:2guns:

It is an established forest which will be milled in the next few years (nothing to re-seed) the fence he went under (figure of speech) was not a fence but a forestry gate that you could ride a small quad under, (all the gates are the same around there) As for ripping up the fence. He said his wheel caught some wire from an old fence. All those tree blocks have old wire lying about, something to be wary of. As for "ruining an area" The tracks made in there by motor bikes over the years are now being enjoyed by horse riders etc. So not ruined but developed for them by motorcycles. Yes we are not allowed in there and most don't.
Character assassination is a bit harsh, I have met the OP on a couple of occasions and found him to be a pleasant young man.

All good for Waitangi weekend, shall we just see what day is looking best weather wise? Any preferences on a route?
Did Lees valley a few weeks back, nice ride, wouldn't mind doing it in reverse... CCC loop is good, kinda need someone who knows the way though, quite easy to miss the small turn-offs/gates etc otherwise... Be nice to see somewhere new too, if you have something in mind.

Congrats on making it through first pro. Second pro is hard work but the papers get a bit more specialized and there are some really great projects. I did OK in second pro so hit me up if you want some tips from someone who has been there.
You should come riding on the weekend if you can steal a bike.

Being in the Adventure Forum our bikes should be Road Legal, when using the term 'Off Road' usually just means off seal and normally still involves some kind of legal road, just not tarmac.
I'm happy to read that everyone recently posting here does appear to be on bikes that can be used on the road so as such have a look at Remote Moto to get an idea what's around for places to adventure....
www.remotemoto.com (http://www.remotemoto.com/), it's growing all the time. Includes a bit of Banks Peninsula now.
It's easy enough to use once you've done it the first time, just share your equipment, riding, camping gear reviews to open up track info.
I can't make it this weekend but could be up for a day out the following one.
