I am, unfortunately, out for tomorrow. The tax man is screwing me for $80 a week until April next year, for unpaid tax.
It was a screw up at my old job when they paid out my holiday pay.
Needless to say I am very strapped for cash and just can't afford a trip out on the bike tomorrow.
Hopefully when I sell my car and a bike I'll be able to join in the fun once more.

Yeap, great fun, thanks to everyone! Nice to meet some new people and put some faces to the names.
Special thanks to Rene and TA for keeping an eye on me down the back and making sure I didn't fall off too much!
Wasn't too sure if all the faffing about with cameras would be worth it and having skipped through the footage, I'm still not convinced but there should be some usable bits in there ... Will be keen to see everyone else's videos/pics.
I skipped out of the last bit and headed home along the motorway after you'd all turned off to do the last little dirt road bit. Going by how bloomin sore I am, I think it was a wise move!
My arms are killing me and, for some reason, so is the ball of my right foot. Maybe it's from putting it down whilst in the middle of my almost-barney on one of those hills. Bike really didn't want to turn on the gravel and almost went into the edge, put my foot down out of reflex. I think TA should have some good footage of that ... :violin:
Good fun, cheers folks!

Yeah, good ride thanks guys, and nice to meet a few newcomers. TA lead us a merry dance at the end.... or did everyone else end up at Ashley?

I did the dance that was planned.
R missed the turn and didn't bother going back.
In a txt he wondered why we didn't catch up.... well it was because he cheated effectively taking a short cut..
I had wondered why no one was marking the corners any more.
My video needs tweaaking and so does my mount for next time.
I can see the tip of my nose through the visor in the side of the picture and it's all tilted which I expected as I couldn't align the camera as level as I wanted.
Overall a very good day no counting the wheel bearing thing for ADV man.

That was a shame, I was really hoping to get a chance to pick your brains about a few things, ADVGD. How's the bike? What happened after you left?
here are a few pics
Excellent! I like the first one, a good example of attitudes. ADVGD has just found out his wheel is poked and he's grinning yet, in the back ground, I've only got battery issues for my cameras but I'm looking like I'm forcing them to work through sheer will power and threats of imminent distruction ...

Yeah I turned off the planned route on my GPS after the third or so missed "planned" turn
Was keeping the frontrunners and followers in sight until we hit Rangivegas then trying to keep the two lots in sight resulted in me losing both - I then got on the motorway behind the following lot so didn't feel too bad
Just south of Rangoon when I was freezing my bits off (note to self; when you think it may be time to put the liners back in - do it! do it! do it!), must admit this did flash through my mind "You never, never leave your wingman. Maverick... It's not your flying, it's your attitude. The enemy's dangerous, but right now you're worse. ..."

Cool video Peeteey. The shots of the wheels are cool but suggestion - the one that was pointing at the front wheel can you mount that to the frame somewhere (down tube?) and look out horizontal so can see person in front etc. Its cool to see the bikes doing their thing but looking down at gravel is kinda boring. You might have got some of the front wheel slides as well.
Random Spur Rd is a Unformed Legal Road (ULR) i.e. paper rd. All of the ride was on public land.

I think the multi cam proof-of-concept experiment was definitely a success, just need more time next time to plan angles etc ...
Thanks but I didn't grab your footage as I had enough angles to work with and had some ideas on how to work it, plus this way I get to look forward to seeing your video.
You have 3 batteries? Blimey!

Very good then.
I still have a private Oxford trail vid 'all about me' I want to do for myself sometime.
Also need to try to find the best Disk format to burn to, SD DVD is most compatable but only Standard Def, maybe the next step up which is kind of Blue Ray on DVD media but that's a bit iffy on compatibility with playback devices. Don't own a Blue Ray burner but that would be the best quality at a $$ price for hardware and blank discs.
Currently while I sleep and work at the moment I have the PC rendering my 4.5 hours video with a correctional rotation of 5° then going to put it through stabilisation (probably take 12 hours to do that part alone including export) which should give smoother motion and just as importantly as a side effect it will zoom most the black corner triangles out of the frame which were introduced by the initial rotation correction.... but then I suppose no one needs to know that.
Then I will start messing around with the cutting.... guest starring Skinny Birdman !
He knows what I mean. :jerry:

Thanks man, I wish I could make vids like his, they're great and he has a really professional feel to them. Don't think I'll ever get that but I do have fun!
The bullet cams are all standard (and standard def) bullet cams (one lent kindly by TA), plugged into a HDD recorder I have which I swapped out the 20gb HDD and put in a 16gb CF card instead, much better.
I had it running through an AV switcher that I plugged all the cameras into it's 4 inputs that it then cycles at a selectable time 1,2,3,4 but in this case, thanks to a double plug, it was going 1,2,3,2 as I had cam 2 plugged into inputs 2 and 4.
The entire thing was made up of old parts I had lying around, apart from the AV switcher which I made, from my old camera setup. Hodge-podge anyone? :D

the one that was pointing at the front wheel can you mount that to the frame somewhere (down tube?) and look out horizontal so can see person in front etc.
I tried to find somewhere else to mount that one but couldn't find anywhere, in my hurry, to mount it to that wouldn't involve some sort of melting of camera or cable so went with that.
I've seen that 'fork cam' used to great effect before which is why it came to mind, but the one I saw was full on motox so it really shows the fork seriously bouncing around, not likely to happen whilst I'm riding!
I think I'll see if I can mount one under, or on, the bash plate looking forward, that looks cool. Problem is, I've only got one camera that has a protective housing ...
It was really a test to see if the system as a whole will work.
Plenty more fun to be had :)

mmm, well on Saturday the forecast is looking good so J and I are going two up on the Transalp to Darfield to check out the new Pit Lane Motorcycles shop and get some oil etc.
We are either going to do lunch in Darfield or maybe earlier in Oxford.
Going there via the Waimak North bank hence the potential Oxford diversion.
Can't say when or which way exactly so won't be posting a time/place. Not so much spur of the moment but certainly more non committal, go when we feel like it stuff.
Sunday there is a Plains Club ride (all seal) heading 'East' from Halswell after lunch so might join them for that, but only if the weather is really nice, which it isn't supposed to be so far.
Still don't know what 'East' is. Could be Gebbies or could be more Little River. It's a surprise I guess. They probably take a vote on where when it's time to depart.
And that's my intended weekend (this weekend 10-11th)

Is it your wheel and forks, or are your bars just twisted in their brackets a bit?
Peeteey
9th September 2011, 20:20
Is it your wheel and forks, or are your bars just twisted in their brackets a bit?
I think I may have fixed it tonight, haven't tested it yet.
It looked like the bars were twisted but I noticed the wheel was out of whack with the guard too so not sure.
I took either Ryan or TA's advice and loosened all the bolts holding onto the forks on the tree thing and gave it a wiggle. Nothing, still the same.
So I then took the front wheel between my knees and twisted the bars and heard a satisfying pop as (I think) it all popped back into place.
Looks better anyhoo, will test tomorrow.
The wheel is now in line with the guard as I think it used to be and the bars seem better too. While I was there I adjusted the front indicators that were set quite far back and were digging into the tank on full lock. Swapped thier mount around so they sit much further forward and now I have a huge extra bit of steering lock!
Woop!
Love days like that :D

Sunday the 25th seems to have most interest, we could keep it simple and head off from the Halswell Garage at 10:30am, do Bossu and have lunch in Akaroa then take in some bays on the way home.
If the weather is expected to be better on the Saturday well... we may have to take advantage of that too and maybe do Waimak Nth bank to Lees Valley and out to Loburn then. Probably start Saturday at the Peg at 10:30am for Oxford Lunch.

went for a quick loop around the waimak today and came to a locked gate on the southbank. the trail bike park is closed for logging. the sign was on the other side so you can get all the way to the one locked gate which seems a bit pointless as i was now locked in the closed for logging part. had to backtrack to weedons ross road then take the seal back home
i assume the northbank gate after the motox park is still locked? i just take the seal round to avoid it and havent actually checked for a while

on the northbank i go in at baynons road which is before harrs rd - that takes u in just after the 4wd park so u get to go thru all the puddles and get wet right at the start. funny how that ford by harrs road was flooded and deep last year but dry this year

Seems I might have a leave pass. Didn't even ask! Not sure which day yet. Probably prefer to ride northbank and Lees so Saturday is what I'll aim for.
Better get the LC4 wheel on the back.

I'll confirm that weather permitting I will be a starter for both days.
Forecast looks good so far but I never trust it this far out.
So...
* Saturday the 24th at the Peg (Belfast Tavern, 899 Main North Rd) for 10:30am(ish) departure for Waimak Rds to Oxford for Lunch then Lees Valley out to Loburn.
* Sunday the 25th head off from the Halswell Challenge Garage (345 Halswell Rd) at 10:30am, turn off before Little River, do Bossu and have lunch in Akaroa then take in some bays such as Okains etc on the way home. Maybe we get Western Valley Rd in there somewhere too, either coming or going.
-Actually to avoid the lake flys we could go from Halswell over Gebbies, round the bays to Western Valley, to Little River for Lunch (be almost midday) and then up to Bossu, round to Duvauchelle, up the hill down to the bays round to Port Levy where we either go home via Diamond Harbour or Little River again.

Well, um, arrr.... good thing I had my bungees to strap it down again. Thought it could escape when I wasn't looking but I heard it go splash on the approach to Oxford.
Out with the Bungees to secure it again and now I've just finished drilling a couple of holes and screwing it to the plate as a temporary fix while I think about my next move.
Thoughts of another Givi one (it was an RJays) or i could just mount the DR's smaller one.
Anyway yep was a pretty good run.
The water in the main river was fairly normal but every other ford or puddle seemed to produce a bigger splash than usual. I swear that was one of the wettest trips through there though.
My feet were about the only bits of me that stayed dry thanks boots.

Clouded a bit near the end.
Snow up the Western valley was great, really should have got a photo in the morning because when we returned that way in the afternoon it was all gone as per the pic.
We headed off from Halswell up Old Taitapu Rd, Gebbies Pass, up Bay View Rd above Diamond Harbour, round to Western Valley rd to Little River for lunch.
After lunch we headed up Renolds Valley to Bossu where there was more snow and all the way out to the Lands End intersection.
Then down through Wainui to Barrys Bay, Onawe Flat Rd to Duvauchelle, up the Duvauchelle Stock Route to the Summit Rd, round to the hilltop then down Harmins Track to Little River where one pealed off and the rest of us went back over Western valley where the snow had all melted and the sky turned grey and home round the bays and over Dyers Pass.

Is it definitely the fan that is crapping out? Smarter blokes than me have replaced the fan only to discover that the thermoswitch in the rad is the problem (see Twisting Throttle America). On my CBR250 and TA's Tranny I bypassed the thermoswitch with a normal rocker switch on the dashboard. Don't know about Kawa's but on Hondas the thermoswitch is generally on the negative side of the circuit, so if you pull the lead off and touch it to the frame the fan should come on.

Yeah I tested that. When I do that I can hear the little click that indicates the fan should be running and the fan will run if I give it a spin with my finger but won't stay spinning.
Someone suggested that I get some sewing machine oil onto it and see if that will help the thing. I haven't tried that yet but it's on my list of things to do.

Yep can't be running up SH1 and SH7 the whole way so usual Ram Paddock route is what I was thinking. Problably going to have to be quickish pace (or more correctly minimal stops till Hanmer). Should take about 2 hours I'm thinking. When does garrage open?

I reckon Hamner in 2 hours is about right. The garage zenbu listing (http://www.zenbu.co.nz/entry/1036022-hanmer-springs-service-station) shows Mon-Sun 7:30am - 6:00pm but was last updated in 2009. Surely it's open by 10am on Saturday.

Well, been a bit of a long day but the bikes finally back in my garage after several tweaks including chain links, handguards vs long brake leaver modding and a tyre swap ready for the morning. Now I'm finally cooking tea and loading the GPS.
Just set the alarm clock for the morning and unless I pinched the tube and the tyre's gone flat I'll see ya at the Peg just as soon as I've gassed up (the bike, not me).

Good run today guys, must of been about 8 riders.
A little confusion while fixing a flat tyre ended with us splitting in to two groups, riding the Passes in the opposite order to each other and only working this out when we met again going opposite directions in Mailings. Never mind I think it worked out fine for most of us.
I found the Transalp could use a bit more ground clearance especially now it has the centre stand attached which hangs slightly below the bottom of the bash plate. Going to need to wind a bit more spring preload on for the two up on the rough stuff at the very least.
Was a bit worried when forward motion stopped temporarily while climbing back up that slippery slope to get back out from the end of Edwards and thanks to cooneyr for getting me through the nasty river back near the hut also in Edwards Pass.
Mailings kind of seemed easy by comparison or was that just luck that I didn't get stuck in that Pass.:sweatdrop

Another use for a park bench. I got a slow leak in the rear tyre back where Edwards meets Rainbow. Managed to get back to Hamner and bead poped off on second corner on the seal (was aiming for garage). Handled surprisingly good with only a couple psi in it. Was tyre's last trip so wasn't worried if it got a bit of a hammering running so flat.

I'm kinda cheating by riding the 450. Much easier on that stuff than the heavier bikes. Besides I've had a couple of years of getting a KTM 950 around that sort of stuff so a 450 is like riding a mountain bike in comparison. Other thing is that the wheel track closest to the high side was covered in loose cobbles and the wheel track closest to the drop off was reasonably clear of loose stones. Taking the outside line was much easier.
Are these of any use? Obviously got a few more from all the stopping I did. Just putting them on Photobucket. Link here (http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u295/cooneyr/Malings%20and%20Edwards%2010-12-11/). All out of order as per normal for PB. Hopefully you can figure out what is where.

Mine was up on the trolley jack and I was undoing the front axle at the time.
Got a good look at how they rock in my garage, would have made good video.
I actually leaned against the wall and held on to the handlebars as she was rocking a bit on the jack but in the end I think it was stable enough to stay put without me (it's a wide jack).
In the slightly bigger shake which came later on I was upstairs and had to brace the PC tower. Don't stack a couple of external harddrives on top of your tower, it makes it top heavy which is bad.
Bikes stayed up unassisted in that too. Feel very lucky to be living in this Flat.

Hey Gareth,
I wouldn't recommend you do this ride without a bashplate, the Porika can be knarly and there will be plently of gravel flying off your front tyre thru the Rainbow.

Its not a problem for me, as I wont we going over 100km/h on the road as I have geared down the DR and it has a new Dunlop D606 on the back that I want to make last longer that the Kenda K760 which was fried after 1300km, mainly due to high speed road use....

Ok, probably be in.
Transalp is only slower on the tighter gravel turns and technical or bumpy bits. Smooth gravel and seal are what it works best on.
It currently costs $15 to bring a motorbike through the Rainbow.

Make sure you run the D606 at about 30psi for a loop like the Rainbow/Lewis. I use to run them on my DR650 (few years back) and could kill one in about 1500km if at 23psi. For gravel and seal 30psi makes bugger all difference to traction.

The Porika Track was daughting, Matt said once you start don't stop as you might not be able to get going again had one scary moment when I got fixated on the ditch and that's where I went, stopped and started sliding backwards but managed to get going again.

The Porika Track was daughting, Matt said once you start don't stop as you might not be able to get going again had one scary moment when I got fixated on the ditch and that's where I went, stopped and started sliding backwards but managed to get going again.
Can't say much about the Rainbow can understand why there's a 50kph limit few crazy 4WD's, did enjoy the first part nice riding through the forest area.
It was great to meet you and find another DR rider with even more modifications / add on's than me.
I have to have one of the TM40 carbs now!
Catch up soon for a more scenic ride.

Ha ha, nice thanks.
We never did see you on the CCC loop either did we?
I'm riding tomorrow but doing a shorter ride to save a bit of gas and to be able to do another shorter run between now and DB1K.
I know you said this is your last chance to ride but I was thinking I may do the CCC again in about a week... I'm off work until the 16th.
I am back at work on Monday but have that weekend off, was going to head into the Clarance one of those days with daughter and her partner on DR, Quad Bike and 4WD, but it is a pretty loose plan at this stage, when were you looking at doing the CCC?

In the too hard basket again now, will probably be a spur of the moment thing if it happens before the DB1K run. May end up doing another midweek overnighter instead which may even turn in to a van trip yet.
Everything here is/has tempted me but having to try very hard to moderate the fuel spending to make it last the whole holiday instead of doing everything now, then sitting about twiddling my thumbs for the next two weeks until the next big spend on the DB1K fuel and accommodation bills.

Anyone keen on going through Lees Vallley (if its not raining) tomorrow morning? Was planning on leaving Rangiora 10ish then through Okuku but pretty flexible on time and direction. I just want to get out and check a few mods done recently.
Cheers Bushy
Yea, this is just another ride I'd like to have attended, rivers in there are real low right now if the Ecan website is anything to go by.
Hope you got out there and had a good one.:bye:

Cheers TA, had a great ride. The river was low, some of the fords on the Okuku side were deeper. Lots of cows to dodge. The new tank stayed on...the fat bars and risers much more comfy....and the Torpedo roll chart didnt fall off!!! so good to go for next weekend.

Went through there today it was great. Quite a bit of stock near the road. The Loburn side of the main river river crossing is alot deeper than the rest, but still no problem....

ProCycle Complete Front Wheel With stainless steel heavy gauge spokes, Black Sun Rim & RAD Black Billet Hub
EBC Supermoto 320mm Brake Rotor Kit
Supermoto Front Fender, the OEM one wasn't good with windy days
Lower Chain Guide, the OEM one was falling apart
Case Saver Chain Guard, I've seen what happens to bikes when you don't have one
Headlight Adjusters, found a problem with them they make contact with the cowl and push the headlight up cowl needs a little trimming.

Seeing as how I missed out on the DB1k and the NITS (or whatever they called themselves) last weekend, I was thinking of getting up at sparrows tomorrow. Christchurch - Rainbow - Porika - Braeburn - Mackley - Westport, tarseal back to ChCh - anyone keen or is anyone planning a more sensible ride around Christchurch tomorrow? - quick calculation reckon it is about 500Ks Tar Seal and 220Ks Shingle

I'm keen for a ride Monday but have baby sitting duties from 1500 so wouldn't be up for your marathon.
Might look at doing a half day loop starting early, need to run it past the high commander!

What time do you consider sparrows to be? Where would we be meeting?

you are a baker so your idea of sparrows and mine might differ somewhat, but I would want to be starting the Rainbow as close to sunrise as possible so leave ChCh before 6am, heading North so we could meet out that way somewhere - don't think the Hanmer petrol station opens till later but I am sure we can top up in Culverdon (anyone know if we can swipe for gas up there)

If we filled up in Amberley, we'd easily get 400+ km from there. Where would that leave us?

be way less than 3 hundy to St Arnaud I reckon

What time are you leaving? I'll try and rearrange my day and put off a few things but no guarantees I can make it.

Sounds good, mate - I don't think it is a very good idea to do it on my todd after what has happened to a few KBers lately, thinking of leaving say 5.30 to get a good run at it, if you can make it we'll go for it if you can't I may just do a smaller one locally

I live out Rangiora so I'd be more happy to meet at Amberley.
I'm gonna have to put the bash plate back on. About time I did that anyway.

Cool - you see if you can get swing it with work and stuff, I'll get my shit together and we'll see if we can make it happen, no pressure if you can't get work sorted as I have a leave pass so will be do a ride anyway (but may just be a local one)
