Bit of bad news for this plan, the bridge between Rangiora and loburn is closed again (was open) due to raising river lever (Last updated 1.10 pm 6/7/13). Report here. (http://www.waimakariri.govt.nz/services/roads_transport/bridge-status.aspx)

Also the main water crossing in Lees Valley is running high today at almost 60 cumec.

I think I'm still in so hope to see ya at the meeting place for what ever happens.

Was just about to post about Okuku River flow running high, been through with others when it was running at 10 cmps which was knee height don't think I'm game to try it running 40+.

Yep, just spoken to Bill McDonald from McDonald Downs he warns that we won't get across the Okuku River and that he didn't really want us thru his property at the moment as he has all his sheep down on the road in case of snow so lets flag Lees Valley.

Lets go back to plan A - Purau - Port Levy - Little River etc etc
See everyone at Shell Cashmere at bottom end of Colombo St at 0900

Went out to Weedons Ross Rd... Didn't get a lot of rideing in...
As there was a classic twin shock trials event on there...
Spent most of the time watching that... I really need to get
my 77 Montesa Cota 348 up and going.. They run a event
once a month... old school bikes on old school style courses :niceone:

The single tracks were a mix of mud & puddles in places other sections
were totaly dry... thank god for the new set of Michelin AC10's think
they were all that kept me up right a few times... 130kg 250 is
a lot of fun after a 175kg 660

Sounds about right time and I was indeed third of three though I was often lagging more like a minute or so behind.
We all turned left and headed up to Bossu Rd across the valley above Little River and had lunch on the side of the road up there while waiting for Matts metal putty patch to set. The XR had developed a small oil leak where the rear brake lever impacted the engine case earlier.
It was lunch with a view, then he topped up the oil and we continued on.

Spent a very pleasant day through Lees Valley with TA, Shoshoni, Thepom, Cynna and the Noob - (told off by the farmer for going up to the airstrip, quite rightly as it doesn't actually seem to be a road, which I hadn't known before). Thepom and Cynna wigged out at Oxford, the rest of us came home down the South bank. Good times thanks guys.

Transalper
28th July 2013, 22:08
Saw some of that on Saturday, there's one there that should make a good log crossing practice one.

We had a good ride today too. Perfect weather again but met an angry farmer chasing some guys on unregistered dirt bikes ripping about the place. Saw two lots of those (unregistered trailbike type groups ignoring the rules) before we were done with the Lees Valley/Okuku area, they are messing it up for the rest of us.
Then we took some of the Waimak southbank back to ChCh.

Edit. as the birdman says we were up at the airstrip when the farmer found us and wasn't too happy about that as we hadn't asked first but he was mainly looking for the unregistered trailbikes that had turned and run when he saw them riding on a private side track earlier.

Yea, I looked for contact details online but short of knocking on doors I don't know how to find them.

If it's a Saturday next weekend I'm in, Sunday as I mentioned I may be doing one of those proper pay to enter farm trail rides.... but the weather long range is iffy.

Great ride yesterday, it was good to met all of you. I'm happy I didn't fall off in the river (which I fully expected to do).

I saw the trees they had across the tracks at the waimak, luckily none of them got in my way, but I still don't know where this horse park is.

I'd definitely be up for another ride when the next one is organized.

I'd be keen to do some of the bays over Akaroa way this weekend (weather permitting), the past few rides I have done over there have just been loops.

thats on the north bank where the 4wd park used to be. its where we used to get in to head towards the gorge bridge - after they blocked access after the mx park ... used to be able to go all the way from the old waimak bridge

did your plate manage to stay on once it was bent up out of the way?

guick look on google - think its baynons rd that we get use now as it now leads to the horse park. so get into the north bank from harrs rd (but the ford was washed out last time i went) so use diversion rd to be safe

That's ok, I never go over to the north side of the waimak so I don't have to worry about greeting in trouble there then.

The plate has stayed on, I haven't fixed it yet, I might take it off to straighten it cos it's got cracks around the bolts, then I'll mount it a bit higher and put it on an angle, hopefully that way it won't hit the wheel again.

If you have an old computer case just make a tidy tale out of one of the side panels.

My plate used to be held on by thin stuff like that and it broke from the engine vibration and I lost my plate, it's held on by thicker strips of metal now so they shouldn't break, I figure if I put it on an angle like yours it should be okay.

Rest of my day will however be spent changing tyres on the WR ready for the trailride tomorrow and stripping crashbars etc off the Transalp ready for some TLC work on clutch and carby starting Monday.
If anyone does get out have a good one.

Foxdown trailride was good.
Couple of pics from near top of a hill but a lot of grey cloud messing up the distance and old phone camera didn't deal well with it.
Fell of a couple of times and done about 100km (3 * 32ish km laps.)
Lot's a poos though so actually gave the bike a wash once back at home.

Transalp is now having it's clutch and carby looked at by professionals.

Foxdown trailride was good.....

Ditto. Was nice to give the EXC a bit of a work out again.

Just sitting here thinking it would have been a bit of a laugh to take my old 950 ADV S on that one. Would have been a good ride for the bigger adv bikes to have a nudge at and riders to push skills a little. Nothing impossible (maybe the enduro loop would have been a bit nasty!) or too tiring.

Have been through with Mita's E-07 in winter before only problem I had was by that tree with the stumps and roots growing out.
If it looks too knarly you could bypass it and go do Eggleston Rd or Kaiwara Rd to Cheviot.

not really crossing anything more serious than a puddle or two, it's all gravel, dirt and grass roads with some slippery when wet stuff.

It's a nice idea, I'd like to go but getting an actual week off then is a bit tricky, taking a day each side of a weekend is a lot easier... but it's a mid week/all week kind of thing.
Eddieb's videos etc on it from earlier this year made it look good.

Aw c'mon Col, if I can haul my ass out of bed and ride there on second hand, bald tyres then so can you

Having said that, it might be an idea to check the weather in the morning, that rain was pretty short lived out here but I heard it was more ferocious slightly to the north. Don't really wanna get stuck in mud for the second weekend in a row :angry2:

That'd actually be a good name for that version.
It included Limestone Road being the main change... after the bridge in to where the fallen trees were.
Not real keen to be in there in a big group (though in 1997 we went big (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4mL29TCOM)), they appear to be trying to minimise traffic through, no signage at all at the end we entered and private property signs at the end we exited. Be good to have a phone number to ring to check for access regarding stock movements etc.

Hi folks, the time has come to sell my beautiful '99 DR350. I'm gonna put it on Tardme next week but thought I'd let you folks know in advance in case anyone here wants it first.

1999 Dirt model (kicker)
Good nick, well used but very reliable and lots of fun!
Comes with:

Stock tank and larger Ascerbis 15L tank (I think it's 15L).
Spare set of wheels so I can do a quick swap out from road tyres and gearing to dirt tyres, rimlocks and lower ratio gears.
Bunch of spare (used) tyres in varying states.
Box of stuff I've collected along the way.
Has rack on the back for mounting Top Box. Rack has very handy handles for enabling people to help you out of the mud!
Extra windscreen hand fashioned by Transalper himself :)
REG(on hold)/WOF, never had an issue ...

Probably some other stuff too that I've quite possibly forgotten ATM.

021-135-4343 if you're interested ...

Cheers!

As far as the exhaust goes - from memory, my 2002 model had an Allen key in the rear of the exhaust that allowed a baffle and piece of pipe to be removed. It made the exhaust note a bit sharper, and may have helped the flow and engine power. Any performance increase on mine was always going to be limited by having a rider with the aerodynamics of a tilt-slab building.

Holy crap! Just went round the block with no muffler, went like a rocket! Felt like a very happy bike!
Came back, bolted muffler back on, same route, much more mellow. The difference wasn't ridiculous but it was easily noticeable.
With no muffler, give the throttle a twist and it surges forward with a growl, with muffler it hesitates then smoothly plods on.

I found the allen key Shadow Jack mentioned to take out the baffle but it's nackered so will need to get that taken out somehow. Hope it's not quite as loud :)

what time should we meet on Saturday for Edwards and mailings Pass.

Does leaving at the Peg at ten sound good? I work till 3.30 am so don't want to get up too early?

Was also planning on just taking the seal to hamner unless anyone wants to lead us to culverdon via Shonshinis gravel roads.

How many are actually coming along?

cynna, I'm still in, still keen to overnight with ADVGD too.
Departing the Peg at 10am Saturday sounds perfect.
The route, although the gravel way out to the Hurunui would be nice, I'd tend toward cruising the blacktop to Hanmer to save a bit of time and energy for starting the main adventure from Hanmer at a decent hour especially for those returning the same day.

Have you spoken to DOC about the Track Conditions and Edwards River Flow.
What about the Gate Code for Edwards Pass I don't remember there being access for Mountain Bikes? I know you won't need one for Mailing Pass.
Do we need to apply for them from DOC?

Transalper
3rd November 2013, 16:35
DOC website currently says this....

Access for two and four-wheeled motorbikes

As lighter two and four-wheeled motorbikes have less impact on the tracks, they are still permitted to use the Maling Pass and Edwards Valley tracks.

Access is via the narrower gates used for mountain-bike, horse and foot traffic. These gates are not locked and are located by the 4WD Maling Pass gate and 1 km south of the 4WD Edwards Valley gate on Tophouse Road.

If the Edwards river is up I thought we can still go as far as the Hut with out too much of a problem... or does it stuff up even that?

On the Edwards we still have to cross Edwards River a few time before getting to Scotties Hut.
Had a look on the Topo map and I can see where the Mountain Bike access is.

In Chch now, came via Lewis, Waiau running dirty but levels are not far off normal and the long range weather is looking good. Edwards should be back to normal flows by the weekend. 10am depart sounds good, not sure what your/everyone else's plans are but I'll be camping up in Edwards Valley on Sat night, fishing Sunday, stay Sun night, ride out Monday. How does shooting straight up to Lake Tennyson first, then doing Mailng, then doing Edwards suit everyone?

they have changed the access since I was last there so no need to reg or get access codes anymore. From the other times I have been there the river is only a problem near the hut so if its too bad we don't have to go all the way - or just sit there and wait for the keen ones to come back

Im good for heading straight to Lake Tennyson first as ADVDG suggested. Saves getting wet feet for the whole day as well.

Good idea about saving time TA by taking the seal straight to hamner.

Leave the Peg at ten this Saturday then.....

I'd like to say you'll be fine but ADVGD is probably the best man to give an opinion on likely track condition.
I've only ever done these tracks in summer with very dry ground at which time tyres were not so important... the slipperiness then was only due to gravel/gritty surface in places and while knobbly tyres still give me more confidence in that situation, I suspect the reality is roady tyres still work pretty well... when it's dry.

How's about that weather then ay? Looks like it's gonna be "Rain with southwesterlies" according to the Met.

Aside from the thing where Met service do change their minds several times a day, they don't really seem to have a good representation of the area in question (unless the Hanmer skifield will do) (http://www.metservice.com/skifields/hanmer-springs) and using the CHCH forecast is no good for it.
We/me like using this wind/rain forecast www.metvuw.com/.... (http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nzsi&noofdays=7) and they think it'll be ok so far.

I normally use both Metservice and Metvuw together but with the recent volatile spring weather Metservice has been way off the mark and jumping all over the show every few hours, Metvuw has proven to be far more stable and accurate of late, especially for long range forecasts. It is looking pretty tidy for the weekend, just cross fingers it holds to the current forecast.

As for temps, at this altitude at this time of year it could just as likely to snow as it is to be a sunny hot day. Its looking tidy but do go prepared

This is rolling into a snow storm at Lake Tennyson on a trip where the weather was meant to be sunny skies and warm:

There are a couple of places I'm keen to go fishing from either location so I'm pretty flexible. If the weather is looking a bit iffy it might be an idea to aim for the hut, a nice warm fire on a cold/rainy/snowy day has appeal

Spare socks and other dry clothes either just in case or for camp comfort, and stick em in a river resistant bag of some sort.
Dry shoes are nice but so is keeping the weight and bulk of your luggage down so I often go without.
Insect repellent is a must.
Something to sleep in (sleeping bag), something to sleep on (mat) and something to sleep under (I mean a tent or bivvy kind a thing).
Mat and tent are in case of emergency or lack of empty bunks. I've got away without before but now I have upgraded to smaller lighter gear I intend to carry that stuff more often.

My choice in food is now the freezedried camp stuff so I have a little cooker and pot to boil water as that's all it needs.... and a cup. and spoon. May pack a cut lunch as well.

All the usual camp stuff really.

Hi , thank you for your email. You won't need a combination for Edwards pass you can use the mountain bike entrance.
The track condition is quite wet and boggy in place and the river flow I am not sure about, but you can only take your motorbikes down as far as the Waiau River and then it is foot access only.
One of our Rangers will be going in early this week so I will be able to get an update from them if you want to ring the office about Wednesday.

I'll give them a ring latter in the week and see if there is anymore information they can give.

Mat and tent are in case of emergency or lack of empty bunks.
Everyone should follow your lead on that, the overnighters should take tenting gear just in case.

Island Gully is only 4 bunks you know? Sedgemere has 6. How many riders are staying Saturday night now? Most likely some will be tenting regardless if the hut is empty. I'm happy to tent, especially if there are noisy snorers in the group!
