Yes ! there's no way you can do it without turning the bike upsidedown, it also helps to have some half inebr, inberi, enibri, pissed onlookers

Hang on. Didn't I see you two up wearing shorts the other day riding down Collingwood St on a wet road?
Well done for getting the license. Now tell your old man to have a very late midlife crisis & get a bike too.
Nay, never done 2-up since I had my 50. And never ridden in shorts since my 50!
I'm working on the old man, might even try'n twist his arm into buying the GB off me when I upgrade...
Nice one Brock! Good on ya. Not getting a dirt bike then?
I knocked off early from flying today to replace the bearings and seals in my rear wheel and sprocket carrier. Just got to get one more o-ring for the carrier and I'm good to go. Just mounted a new T63 tyre and amping to go for a ride. Pretty happy I was able to do it all myself. Anyone give me some tips on breaking it in before I go to hard out on the road? I love to lean it over but have never owned a new tyre before so not so sure how to go about it. Would taking it for a gravel ride scrub it in?
Amber
Howdy amber, long time no speak! I'm sticking to the road bikes I think, gravel freaks me out a bit still!
I'm keeping the 250 until something jumps out at me - probably go the sports-tourer way, RF400 sorta thing, otherwise GS500 or Bros 400? My riding is pretty much just riding to work and pootling the highways & backroads.
VFR400's look good but I'm kinda weary about the complex v4 engine -supposed to be very reliable with good maintenance, but bad news $$ wise if it goes bang. I got off lucky when the GB went bang.
Jebus this thread moves quickly!

Oh man I'm in over my head again.
Looks like it'll have to be a shed (or out in the open on the driveway) nite round our place with some beers & cheerful bantering soon. What's best with whoever wants to come? Fri nite? or mid week?
Willdat?
27th January 2010, 08:28
Well done Brock, you can stay later at shed nights now!
I confess I also don't know WTF or whereTF the crossed eyed lion is...
I'm apparently going to have my bike back by the end of the week...just in time for the baby I'm sure which is apparently pretty happy where it is.
So I'd be keen as for a shed night at yours Padmei, but the likelihood of me getting there is looking slimmer by the day!

HI Padmei, there is a photo walk through descripiton of doing a valve adjustment on the older model KLR here, that I found useful when I did mine a few months ago. http://www.klr650.marknet.us/valves.html
You can also download and print it as a pdf file by following the links on the left. lots of other useful pictorials for KLR procedures too.

Went for a wee tootle up sharlands this arvo and they seem to be doing a lot of logging up there now and buggering up a lot of the tracks, mind you they are making new ones too. One of these new tracks i thought i would follow as it looked like a good way home:no:. part way down I knew there was no going back up it so in full control:no: I got to the bottom of a steep valley. i went up every sidetrack trying to find a way out and every one was blocked or just too steep.:shit:. Anyway I ended up riding into the back of the rifle range and thought aha a way out, but the gate was locked.
Tried a couple of hills to get out but one had a tree blocking it and the other looked way too steep, but i was desperate to get home so tried anyway. It was going quite well but I had to back off cos the klr was about to flip (didn't know that was possible) so laid her down and walked to the top to see if I could see a way out. I was knackered so took me gear off and tried to ride down but high sided and rolled down the hill and the bike was upside down leaking fluids everywhere. managed to turn it round and get going and eventually found a horrible track out. On the way home my rear brake didn't work, and upon investigation the whole rear was covered in oil from when the oil leaked out through the breather when bike was inverted and out the drain and over the rear disc.
so be careful up there cos its all changed
I am now shattered

I've had it trying to be nice to people - all people out there really. Road cyclists have a rep of being stuck up & yep pretty true (used to race roadies with Wheelers). Mountainbikers have a deluded sense of laidback coolness & comaradery. After riding past & with so many riders & not even getting a nod or acknowledgement when greeting them with a G'day or smile I just put on my race face & become as disaffected as they are. Sad really...
Anyway a couple of friends were doing that race over the maunga. It was part of the Kiwi Brevet. 1200kms over a minimum of 4 days with a minimum of 4hrs sleep each nite. It ran Blenheim to Blenheim via Port Undewear, Queen charl. , Munga, lake Rotoiti, Reefton, Big River area, moana, Hawarden way, Molesworth back to Blenheim. They all carried SPOTs so following the event was quite easy.
The reason he didn't stop (well aprt from being an arrogant arsehole) was he would have been shitting himself coming down on his cyclocross bike with cantilever brakes:crazy:
I'm back from Westport after the Buller half & glad to be home. Westport may have some amazing riding but jeez it really is a depressing shithole. man I love Nelson.
Any one want to do a trip out to Hori bay one evening? - They're starting to get shorter:weep:

Ummm. actually I suspect he didn't stop 'cause he was arrogant and maybe didn't want to break his cadence (?) going up hill, it wasn't that steep anyway. On the upside though we did have a bit of a chat to some at the summit, nice people, planning on touring south america on m/bikes.
I've found the same sort of arrogant attitude with a few/lot of 4wders for some reason, I could go on but it's not the time or place for it :D
I'd be up for a trip to Hori Bay perhaps. Must put the bike back together first

Great day out, despite staying out later than planned... by about 6 hours :)
Soooo you guys didn't get to Takakaka then ?clint640, rosie! and myself peeled off the SH at East Takaka Rd, then decided to head out to Pohara for lunch at the beach, courtesy of Rosie's panniers. You must've been heading south on the SH at that time. After a leisurely lunch watching the Bay we scooted in to Takaka for go-juice, thence back over the Hill to Monkey Wizard brewery. Rosie copped the overtakers from hell and made virtually no progress through the traffic for the entire up 'n' over, poor girl! The downside of a small bike unfortunately. After the recent top end refresh, and still running short trail gearing spinning 5000rpm @ 100km/h, the 640A was passing stuff effortlessly :D and still returned better than 5.0 L/100km for the day!!
Clint & Rosie sampled some bevvies and bought some takeaways as the brewery doesn't have an on-licence, then we kept going to the Moutere Inn and had a pleasant round of Mussel Inn's Captain Cooker Manuka beer. Fitting given that while we were lunching, my cell phone was connected to the Collingwood site. ;) Trivia: the Moutere has had 120 different beers since opening on 14/10/2008.
I have to say, I'm not used to a measly 200+km touring range from the 12L E tank, and the seat is a shocker for touring! But oh so wonderful for trail riding, when you want a narrow tank and low seat height.
Nice to catch up with the norfern pair, and the rest of youse. :woohoo: There's quite a few side tracks up the Cobb that would be worthy of exploring.

Could be persuaded to put a few pizzas or fush & chups on out here on the way back...
Failing that a wekend jaunt could be on the cards

Finally did the ride I've been meaning to finish. Hooking up the circuit thru Hira forest from bobs fern to Teal saddle via the majority of rideable (for me) firebreaks & trails.
I only saw one other bike out there & a few Mtbers. Nice!
I was feeling so good I rode that short bit of off camber track off Maitai Face rd where I previously did the beautiful back somersault off the side. It has been my nemisis every time I ride past it. I got up the first time with no problems then made myself go down & try it again to face my demons. Made it up twice but it is still a piece of crap to ride:mellow:
Still couldn't find where Linton Hill joins on but will google earth it later

Looked out the window this morning & Mt Arthur looked so clear I had tell the boss to go to hell & went for a blast up to the carpark.
Went thru Rosedale - past Jen's butt clenching corner- ( Um... she clenched her own butt - not mine- but not literally with her hands but you know.... Just wanted to clear that up ...ah um I think I did)
Anyway what's important is that the undulations up the road were bad. I think the rear wheel caught traction every 3rd stutter bump. Heaps of touros up there crapping in the bushes.
Nice way to ease into the weekend.

Nordie showed us how to ride up & down steep hills with road tyres, Woodman showed us how to ride up & down steep hills with one leg & I showed them how to drop your bike on a reasonably flat piece of ground turning around.
BTW the first "bump" was a metre high kicker going up Hurricane hill. Air was gained

Yes fun was had and a lot of fluid was lost in the heat. You know, riding with one foot on the passenger peg feels very stylish, almost camp if i am honest.
Got home and checked the othe side and it isn't far off breaking either.
It certainly is a good area to test and hone your skills aye.
Has anyone ridden up to Flora Hut on their motorbike. Was going to on my mountain bike but figure a powered one might be funner. I know DOC try to shoo you out if you have a pushy so they would be ropeable on the noisy one (haha - as they dismount from their 4x4). But it is a legal paper road isnt it? Certainly is a two wheel track to the Hut.

You can ride to the Flora carpark, but not passed the locked gate to the actual hut 3km away. Yes, MTB's are allowed, but not motos. The track is sweet right through to the Gridiron shelters, shame we can't go there.
I've MTB'd thru to the Salisbury Hut and across the Tablelands back to the Cobb a few years back, as well as the other track linking to Asbestos Hut. Bit of bike carrying over some techy bits, def not for motos, DOC would hang and quarter you if they caught ya in there.

No and not quite accurate. I crashed my klr 3 times and Umopoms 690 one time on that corner. The third bike was a different corner when I highsided the kdx. \
Surprised you let me have a go on the DR.
NordieBoy

Surprised me too. Although the DR was the only bike with a decent rear tyre.
Funny how you were the only one who fell off all day though.
NordieBoy
15th March 2010, 07:13
If I could sum up the KTM 690 in one word it would be "smooth". Smooth lines, suspension, handling, engine, everything.
The only minus I could see was a lack of stomp down low but as soon as you've got any revs up at all, it just purrs along. Also as KTM expect you to never get stuck or fall off, there's no grab handles on the back.
It was good hearing Shane's impressions of each of the bikes after blasting them around the track bouncing off the limiter.
Also Padmei's shocking admission as to which bike he preferred!

Well I'm absolutely buggered. I couldn't hold my arms up to type last nite after picking up gonzo so many times yesterday.n Shit that was the most amount of fun I've had for a long time.
I really want to go back & do the same thing next weekend - this time with a knob on the back (and maybe a newer one on the front.
As the guys said we cruised into Wairoa Gorge with Shane on his lil KDX200 as our mountain guide. Roared senselessly up & down a closed road ( to 4wd traffic that is), then went for an explore up the river.
We all had a go at a firebreak which only Woodman got up on his tractor then preceded to get lost!! While we were waiting I had a blast on the KDX & relived my apprentice days when I had a lil 2T. Heaps of fun - and LITE!!!
On the explore we experienced about 7 river crossings. I got thru 2 I think without having to get off & lift the front or back. You know who your mates are during those times. I'm blaming my E07s & bad luck - skill has nothing to do with it. Umopom was having a bit of trouble with traction on the greasy bits with his front & back 07 setup tho he got across the rivers pretty well.
In the depths of nowhere on a sunny afternoontwo adv riders, Umopom & I, created a new sport - Synchronised bike flopping. Picture this: a shortish climb up a average firebreak. Umopom in front cruises up to a hidden irrigation trench (must have a name for these), Anyway he looks at the 1metre + drop hesitates & disappears as I arrive at the crest. He gives it a bit of throttle to get up the other side, stalls & as I see what's going to unfold put on the front brake at the top of the drop, clutch in with right foot down as we both slide backward, front wheels locked & with perfect precision fall effortlessly backwards with our bikes landing in a heap mocking us.
For a moment we were Gods. Very much like the Rainey & Swantz manouvre.
Nordie also found himself out of his comfort zone doing a knarly hillclimb which Shane blitzed & Woodman conquered. Not often you see him having to sift back beaten...
You know the kid in class you always used to dare to do a dum thing & he'd do it without thinking? Well not namimg anyone here but Woodman would have been him. Plenty of laughs...
What better way to finish a ride than around a course mowen into a large undulating field for VMX. it was very grassy & heed was to be taken of the warning from ther owner not to go wide on the corners. A bit off camber bits had us cautious untill we got used to it. then it was all on.
Man that 2 stroke was fun. Shane can ride like a man possessed & anyone who doubts the abilities of big thumpers should have been there yesterday. KLRs, DRs 690's KDX's all ripping it up. Trying everyone elses bikes on the same terrain was a real eye opener to the different characteristics each bike possesses. It was a shame most of us had pretty shitty tyres to get a real comparison however I have to admit that after the KDX, Nordies DR was the most fun to ride - heaps of instant low down torque & really manageable. The KLRs got a good rap from Shane ( Nordie felt distinctly uncomfortable having to try a KLR) & everyone was fizzing about the suspension & engine on the 690.
So to hell with blind brand loyalty, Motorcycle parochialism & snobbery if everyone got a chance to ride other bikes & have fun like this every day the world would be a better place:grouphug:
cue Michael jackson "we are the world..."

Today i feel like the day after the first game of footy for the season. Muscles i had forgotten about have awaken.
yep I gotta admit it but Nordies bike (big wallowy wallower) was pretty good on the track. The 690 scared me a bit but with knobs on would be lethally fun, and picking it up almost made me cry with its lightness.
Interesting riding Gonxo too. Very similar to mine but with brakes that work, not 690 brakes (fcuk) but brtter than mine.

tried turning crashing into an art form after the kdx spat me off, there I was sliding down the hill head first on my back, but still having the presence of mind to throw my head back and flip over in a perfect backward roll and land on my feet only to see you guys at the top of the hill watching someone els. You got more air on my bike than I did. I really prefer my tyres to be in contact with the ground. I get the shits when they're not.
Apparantly my clutch is slipping too.
Going up the uphill section on the limiter in 2nd gear with a new(ish) MT21 on the rear and the clutch would slip when it hit the acceleration bumps.
Still it's better than Padmei's slipper clutch :D
I also need to re-think my front guard water deflection issues.
I'm still getting muddy water out from unexpected places...

Tried to change tyres on my spare 17" rims (front and rear) to MT60s, I'm lacking technique something terrible with the 17" rims (21" front was ok even though I pinched the tube...) would be super to see some real life techniques if someone is changing a tyre in the next few weeks let me know and I'll come and watch if that's ok. I think two tyre levers is part of my issue...

Just been up the Maungatapu and met the Nelmac boys on the way down. They have put a wire across the track right up at the top on the Nelson side. The attachments are drilled into a couple of big rocks. It's ok for bikes as you can still lift it up and squeeze under it. Hope that helps.
Good to see there was ultimatly some consultation on this. Guess wont be long and there will be a locked gate at the Caretakers house as well. Fuggit!
Time to be asking some questions of the council guys - find out what is happening.
Interesting.
That would limit the damage on the Nelson side of the track to 2 wheeled and foot traffic. ie Bugger all.

Any body spoken to the Council about this yet?I have been in email conversation with the council throughout today. The gates went up because 4wders were lifting the cable, running over the signs and cones to get access. They are in final stages of costing up the repairs. So far only 4wd groups have been in discussion with the council about access. No mtb groups. I've mentioned the adventure motorcycle users and the council is keen to talk and set up a meeting. I don't think this track rates very highly on the Nelson MTB'ers list. It's really quite crap to ride up on any sort of MTB and there is not much traction to be had. So you end up pushing most of the time. Coming down is again mostly crap except when on a downhill rig. So not surprised about that. Would be keen to help. Just remember i work crap shifts and on-call in the hospital.

Absolutely unreal rambling old buildings up the end of Teal Valley. If you get a chance check it out during an open home- prob one of the craziest farmlets in NZ.
I came across it while mtbing from Maitai valley on a real stormy afternoon . Thinking I was heading back down to Maitai I came to a gate & these old buildings were sitting askew in fields. It was such a sureal sight & thinking after I was in the Lud Valley I could never find it again. After a few years I was unsure if it was real or if I'd dreamed it!!

Official NCC statement re: Maungatapu track -
"The track has closed signs at both ends, at the start of the Pelorus river, start of the road up to the track and at the saddle when coming from Marlborough. There is a large sign at the start of the Maitai just down from Branford Park by the old Quarry and again at the new gates, when coming from Nelson.
It is worth noting the track is niether a paper road nor legal road.
The track will stay closed at least until the organisations that pay for it's upkeep can have it repaired from all the damage that has been done by four wheel drives. This damage includes mud-plug holes that have exposed the warring tape for the fibre optic cable that runs along the track, deep holes caused by water courses being blocked off making access out to the power line corridor difficult for service vehicles.
Once the repair work is completed it will be up to the power and communication companies in conjunction with Nelson City Council to decide how to best manage access over the track. It is unlikely to be a free for all. We have only heard from the local four drive club and freedom motor bike riders, who are working with us in regard to organised access.

So they have only been contacted by a couple of groups at this stage, and a few individuals obviously.
What I'm trying to get at I guess is that a lot of ADV riders from all around the country at some stage have probably ridden the Maugatapu(and would again if able) but without a organised vocal voice like a club, or Association how do we all voice our concerns over these sort of changes? With out upsetting the local Coucil/ land owners.
Padmei
23rd March 2010, 07:08
I have found our council very approachable & as a lot of those working there are into MTBing tramping & other outdoor activities they are very proactive re access to areas. I think at this stage they wouldn't want to deny access to anyone just find out who have interest in going thru it.
If you felt concerned about losing access to the Maungatapu a simple email to the council from indivduals from all over the country stating that that track is a reason many adv riders stop over in Nelson to ride as part of tour/ route.
We spend a fortune on self promotion to get visitors here so that is a good angle to start with.
I can't see it turning into a battle over access. Lets start with simple comunication & let them know what the Maungatapu means to Adv riders.

Good ideas Padmei, I would be interested in attending a meeting with council if one happens .
I actualy use the track for commuting as its on my way to town ,so its more than just a recreational route.
They've made it a bit difficult now with their wire ropes and such.
Perhaps the goodwill could start by council creating a narrow gap so bikes can pass through ?

Good idea Padmei with the emailing thing. I'm guessing the council staff and elected memebers dont really know how much use it really gets. Maybe if we all sent in an email about how much and when we use it they might get a better idea. Is there an email address we should use or do we just use the generic one.
I like Undergrounds idea of narow gaps for motor and mountain bikes. The regional council down here has created a couple of bike only areas along the side of the Waimak by wire roping of large areas (20+ heactres) and providing a few gaps with railway line driven into the ground. The tracks in these areas are generally not degrading at all though it is all gravel and sand based tracks. I believe stongly that motorbikes do absolutly minimal damage compared with 4wd's. I use to do a lot of 4wding and have seen the carnage they can create and you'd need hundereds of bike deliberatly trying to rip the place up to do the damage of 1 4wd. If the council made if freely accessable to two wheeled machines and by permission only for 4wds for a couple of years after the repairs are completed it would be interesting to see hoe much damage is or isn't done.

Ok, at this stage the council has been quite reasonable, and does not appear to be wanting to lock us out. I have been dealing with one person who is managing this issue.
I'm not sure if it is a good idea for all and sundry to email the council chap. Might just piss him off having to deal with the emails and he's already agreed to meet. Do send them to me, via PM if necessary, and I'll present them in bulk at our meeting. Organisations usually like to deal with other organisations, not a big rabble. After I meet with the fellah, I will know more; those expressing interest will be invited assuming the Council is happy to do so. As I said before, I am happy to spearhead this, if we have to form some kind of collective... that's a bridge to cross (or river to ford :D) for later.
Underground, I did say we use it as the eastern access to the city.
As ever, thanks Ryan for your input. That sounds like a great suggestion. One of my ideas is to present them with examples of working access systems from other parts of the country.

I am heading down to do The Molesworth , Hamner coffee & back to Nelson thru the rainbow on Saturday as it's the last chance for me before it closes on Easter Monday. At the mo the weather looks like showers for Saturday. Hopefully it won't be like the "showers clearing" Clarence ride. I will see how it looks Sat morning but am 99% sure i'll be doing it anyway.
If there are any others out there wishing to join me you are most welcome.

Padmei, I have never done that track and would be keen......I crash a lot.
Also have received a letter from the council
Hi Bruno,
We have closed the track because of damage that has been done by four wheel drives. We are working through a management programme with the power and communication providers that rely on the track to service/protect their assets. It is looking very unlikely that the track to be open to all at all times. We are in the throes of contacting the likes of four wheel drive clubs to talk about their issues with a view of allowing access for organised events . We have had contact from another adventure rider who is keen to come in and talk and would be keen to meet with you too if would like.

They sound OK to me. Seems that only a couple of letters were received from us ADV types.
So yes, I would like to meet these guys.
I wonder who could that other ADV'er be......hmmmmm????

Sounds like I'll be up for the Sat ride...
That "organised events" bit does not sound good for bikes.

Cool, that sounds good, as I am nursing a cracked rib from last weekends crash. Tree roots are now in the bad book, must keep away from tree roots.
Do we need to carry cash to pay for this track and where and when do we meet up?. Just so i know when to dose up on pain killers.

I'm on the big comoputeorer now so there shouldn't be any problems. The laptop spacer key stuffed out & whilst giving it a good blowout did something to the 'i' button. anyway...
Meet tomm morning at 730am from the parking layby by trafalgar st roundabout. I'm all gassed up & ready looking forward to a great day riding gravel.
So far it's nordie & fluffybottom the cat.

Have a nice day guys,
I did the circuit a few weeks ago from home , nice days ride.
I would love to join you but I've had an electrical meltdown :crybaby:and need to get to town to get some connectors for a fixup ... just as well its so old it can be fixed for $3.50 , instead of having to trailor it to an expensive man in a white coat.
