There's going to be so many spot prizes that everyone should get one.
I'm tempted to marshall and take photos myself. I've got to get home quickly after the race and make the certificates for prizegiving as they're going to have pics of the winners on them. I see a chance for me to really stuff things up there :D
It's basically the track from last year without Linton Hill or Sheep Road.
Even Scout Road is in. You detour around the hole just to the south.

Yep I'm in NN and keen to do a bit of a pre-run. Will make a plan at the BBQ tonight. I stupidly forgot my old fork springs for Colin so not really sure how timing is going to work out for Sat morning but will definitely do something. Might just have to be a lunchtime start though that might not be too bad given the amount of ice around the place when we drove up last night.

OK plan coming together. Meeting time and place is 10 am at Mobile Ridchmond
Roughly Spooners Range to Golden Downs, over to Hope Saddle then back to Tadmore, back over Spooners Range and home. Lots and lots of forestry tracks. Very easy to get lost so may be a fair bit of GPS checking going on. Also may be locked gates etc.

No way is it up to 3 hours of standing in a race so I'm taking the DR up and doing marshalling and photos and staying warm and stopping when I want and taking a thermos of coffee.

Almost.
I was riding from 9:30am 'till around 5pm.
The pick of the day for me would have been the noise of the Akrapovic'd KTM 950SE going past at full song with the rider "yee haa!"ing away :D

Well on Saturday I fitted the new stator to the DR250, it ran beaut, sounded great.
Sunday I did a relaibility run to make sure I was going to get my $ worth out of REG and WOF, made it to the MDF plant where it wouldn't start so I pushed it home. Smelling very fuelly, drained the carb last night and had another go at starting it but no joy...The saga continues!

At 6:30pm they got a call that the rider that got lost in the forest had been found and was being taken out via the Ludd.

Any reason given by the lost rider? Was he trying to find a route back on the roads to avoid a challenging section?

It was the guy just after the 2 concrete fords on the Suzi. He went walkies to see if he could get out and the sweep crew missed him.
He was the mate of the 950 guy.

He was the mate of the 950 guy.Uh... I stopped to talk to him and catch my breath before tackling that next slippery section. He was all of 250m from the marshals. I nearly said to him that the marshals were left-left-left up the road back around the spur, but didn't know quite how far it was, nor want him to go AWOL - where he was he'd be found!!

Does anyone have a KMZ file of Hurricane Hill, please? I'm trying to build a map of the XC course. Some of the off piste routes are difficult to place by memory, with no hard references on the google earth imagery, but I think I have most of it sussed. Although the eastern-most snotty slick watercourse & clay section I'm not sure at all - could be either side of the airstrip hill, or even further east again!! :shit:

Yes it is official DR250's have average electrics, I have a spare stator that is supposed to be off a running bike, $79 off trademe. My stator 'should' be fine at the moment as it has come off a bike that a guy has been using every weekend for the last year or so. I have a plan....... Need to know numbers that would be keen but I grew up in Upper Takaka and Harwoods now owns a Station on the Westcoast and it boarders the northern boundary of Kahurangi National Park. So basically over the Takaka hill out through Collingwood to the westcoast and head south as far as the road goes. Most of you guys up there may have done this trip?
I can organise accommodation for up to 20, charge a minimal amount to cover food and a few Beers. Head over Saturday and be there for a BBQ tea, and a few beers. Its amazing country with access to the beach and sand dunes. There are three river crossings and would probably be weather dependent. I would organise a 4WD to take food luggage and be a safety vehicle (not that it would be needed)
As a poor weather alternative they own most of Upper Takaka and rustic accommodation would be available there with the Cobb and Barons Flat it could still be a night away?
Its a dream at this stage, but if enough interest, I'll sort a date with the landowners and start the ball rolling?

If I forget to put it into the secret logging mode (store 1 point every second) it tries to "correct" the saved track to conform to where it thinks it should be.
The Nuvi 500 has the high sensitivity chip so the Quest would have just shown blank sections anywhere near trees.
I'm impressed at the coverage it does get.

Anyone else wondering how the resident Richmond Ladyboy is going over in Thailand? I wonder if he's banned from the internet cafes?
Geez I hope he brings home some pics:crazy:
I am baa-aack and fcukin knackered.
After me and bro in law got driven through Bangkok dressed in drag, hoping like hell the van didn't break down, and getting some strange looks from the locals we realised when we turned up at the 21st that there seemed to be a bit of a language barrier issue with the term "fancy dress".
Fortunately Thai people have a good sense of humour, and after a few wines we got over the fact that we were the only two there in any sort of costume.
Had a great time in Thailand. It is so incredibly cheap to stay over there. We did a road trip up to the hills in the north, and the roads there are like Takaka/Whangamoas, but go on for hundreds of kms. Next time it will be on a bike.
Got some relevant bike pics somewhere in th 5 gigs of pics that I will post soon.

You're thinking of those little toy r/c ones and they'd still have problems fitting on an LCD tv.

zeRax & myself went to the last one, it had been a bit wet leading up to and on the day.
Apart from one gently-upsloping but whooped out & greasy bit that could take a bit of effort, all youse bastards could get your adventure bikes around the main track easy. The A grade stuff was v.greasy even with mud tyres fitted, and the AAA grade we left well alone.
There was a neat slightly downhill long section of road beside a creek that had lots of flooded rivulets to cross/ford - neat.
Beats riding in Hira _again_. :scooter:

I went for a lil jaunt around some of the roads by Mt Duppa yesterday. Quite cool around there. I might get out to Hori Bay for another looksie soon too - great roads around there.
I went for a MTB up Fringe this morning - Faark what a scene of destruction it is up there now after logging. It's funny how I love the bare logged forestry roads on the moto but they seem very dry & stark when sweating your ring out on a MTB.
Shit we live in paradise alright.

Just went for an unplanned hoon over the maungatap. Like visiting an old friend, and that first uphill with those new rampy things is great for getting a bit of airtime woohoo.
had a couple of scary moments though, and have decided that my front brake is not working to its usual crap standard and has now reached fcuken crap standard. I proved it coming down Hurricane hill, it would barely hold the beast back. Pads are getting thin, but will have a look at the caliper etc this time as well. Also seem to have blown the base gasket. :shit:
All in all a great 2 hours.
Will be keen on Anatori Padmei, but the next 3 weekends are working.

I went up hurricane cos I still had some time cos I couldn't get under the rope at the top of the maungatap. Could have slid under but just couldn't be assed picking the bike up again.

I always love the way as soon as one bails from a ride at a particular place, that part of the route from then on becomes the best part of the day.;)
When I was surfing it was the old "You should have been here yesterday..."
Good times gentlemen. Good to meet Andy & see the KLR being ridden in more capable hands than myself. Funnily enough apart from the hideous pine needle covered wet clay, the rain wasn't really a problem.
Anatori still has to be done tho...

yup good alright. Great fun exploring out there. We need to do more of that sorta riding. Bit of tar, bit of gravel, bit of slippery stuff etc.:woohoo:
swapsies was interesting, and after riding a DRBIG a 690 and Schmidt, I felt more at home on the BMW than the other two. Love the 690, but its friggin insane. Not sure about the Big, may have to spend more time on it.

Funny isn't it bike swapsies?
I don't like the 690 as after riding 'normal' heavyish bikes it doesn't feel substantial enough for me ie. being so far forward on the slim seat & it being so lite & flickable I feel like I'm on a kids MX bike. The KLR has ruined lite bikes for me.
I liked the BIG more than I thought I would. It does look so intimidating with the large amount of surface plastic from the side, however when riding it I found the ergos close to perfect for me (including the bent bars),power delivery smooth & predictable & those new tyres:hug: Oh sorry about your mirror Jatz, I'll see if I can get one from the Suzu shop- I blame WW tho- he roarspast me & next thing you know there's no mirror:eek5:
The BM is a funny bike tho - I find it kind of quirky. Getting back on Gonzo was like getting on a MX bike loose, powerful & TALL:laugh:
Did Taz wheelie my bike as the chain's a bit looser?

KLR's are a good bike....... there I said it
Despite all the design faults and the fact they're butt fuckin ugly, I s'pose they are a true dual purpose bike. notice I didn't say ...sport...
I still wouldn't own one though, I have some dignity :D

The 690 makes power everywhere, ergonomically/handling-wise was the best out there partly because it's got nuffin' up front getting in the way. Although the 640A has weight and bulk up front (had a full tank, too) the steering/front end is precise but you can feel the inertia in the big tank/headlights. The 690 has the precision with no heavy crap up front to slow the bike's reaction... luvverly, but the suspension was a bit choppy for my lesser weight.
The R80GS was a sweet bike, definitely in its element bopping along gravel roads. Is such a low-rider it needs tassles, conchs & arseless chaps. Probably my pick for the gravel/tour bike, of that bunch. Didn't shake/vibrate as badly as I remember the R100's doing.
The DR Big was a surprise - after the KTMs the best of the bunch, IMHO. Surprising given the age/era of the bike, but perhaps shouldn't be given the rallye-raid heritage. Makes power like the KTMs - grunty but more power chimes in the more you rev it. Had the tidiest, narrowest seating position, most trail-like but the wide tank forward of the seated position made standing difficult for me. Fairly smooth, hard to say if it vibrated more or less than the 640, probably less. Ergos good, everything just fell to hand (one bar more easily than the other though). Hides its weight well.
KLR... umm agricultural. Seemed rough and vague. Would've thought it would be "tighter" than the Big, maybe more time to get used to it I'd feel different about it. Ergos set up all wrong for this little black duck: seat vs bars vs front wheel arrangement all out of whack. Given I'm closer to woodman's build than Jatz's, I would have thought the Big would be all awkward and the KLR reasonably close... nup. Different strokes for different folks.

Well, that was the most fun I've had with me pants on :niceone:
Set off to clear skies this morn, headed south to Kawatiri and the Porika. Plenty of snow clouds around the tops, and the temperatures soon dropped off around Glenhope saddle.
As I headed down Howard Valley road as it started to snow lightly but not enough to get wet or cold, made for fun riding, looked something like the Starship Enterprise going through a meteor shower. Cool.
The snow was light on the ground at the start of the Porika, and the creek crossing was well up, was almost at top of the wheels, but got thru no sweat.
The snow was pretty thick on the ground by the time I got to the propectors cabin, hell it was fun though, was fair giving it the welly and charging up the track in the wheel tracks/water channels which were clear of snow.
By the time I was half way up, the snow was getting thicker, and the bike was spinning up a lot, so a little bouncing on the rear helped keep the traction and momentum up. Near the top it was a lot harder going, had to push a couple of times and plough on through, but was well worth it as I crested the summit. A couple of small saplings down over the track, laden with snow, but not really an issue, as they were easy enough to push past.
Once I was over the summit, it looked like someone had turned on the heater, the snow was pretty much melted right down the other side.
Stopped for a minute at Lake Rotoroa to advise a couple in a 4wd that the north side was prolly not a good option to drive with the depth of snow, and pushed on over the Braeburn..... 4 km into it, damn it, pine trees down over the road, big buggers and no way of getting past without a Stihl, so headed back to SH6 via the seal.
Detoured down to the Owen River valley and talked to a cocky about accress up Mt Murchison, the gate is always locked but won't be a problem to get a key after lambing season is done. Should be a good little ride for the future when the weather improves.
