I'm gonna tootle overto Anatori on Sunday if anyone wants to join me. At this stage I'm happy to cruise along the gravel roads & get a feel for the place. As I've still got baldish tyres I prob won't get onto the beach. Of course my ride will be centred around coffee stops everywhere.Fixed.

I'm keen, although again the tides are against us. Big tides, but high tide is 12:34pm 1.78m at Whanganui Inlet on Sunday. We need to be there closer to 6am/pm

Replaced my front tyre. The MT21 had a split on the side wall so a quick trip to the Nordie emporium got me a usuable one for now. I'm Peed off cos therewas still a good 3K kms left in it.
Also found a left hand mirror for the Big Jatz that should be just right.

Leaving town at 830am & leaving Richmond Mobil at 850am. See you there.

BTW I don't know where I'm going but have my GPS incase I get lost.

Hmmm, wait a min. They all like river crossings:yes:.
Is this a longish ride, with lots of road stuff?. If it is I might have to change the rear sprocket to the smaller one.

Went for a ride up Hori bay today.

long story short, I missed a corner and went carreering (sic) over a big slopey bank with a vertical bank at the end. Couldn't ride back up or traverse but upon trying to ride up I flipped the KLR and it went down the slopey bit even further and was almost teetering on the edge of the bank.

I sad fcuk several times as the thought dawned on me that the only way out of this kafuffle was to throw the bike over the bank. Now i have no experience with this sort of thing so i decided to video it for future reference and possible training initiatives, and cos i know you guys just love this shit

Now sitting at home nursing a very swollen knee

Cheers, knee is quite swollen but I know this knee after years of aggravating it and it will be ok in a few days.

Because the wheels dug into the bank on the way down the bike landed in a completely inverted position. No damage except a broken mirror, and I think the handlebars and fairing are straighter than before, but I don't recommend parking this way:facepalm:

Thanks for that Fran:woohoo:
The bike is fine, it stalled a few times coming out of Hori bay and wouldn't start, but it had cleared itself by the Whangas. Probarbly a fuel thing, or the fact that a heap of oil had made its way into the airbox. If I hadn't had the vapor the original instruments would have been toast, and the top of the fairing just bent out of the way upon impact.

Wish I could say the same for me, my knee is swollen up like a swollen knee and walking is not easy. My other leg is fairly bruised up too.

Oh well I was having most of next week off anyway:facepalm:

do you wear decent knee guards?

if not have a look at the heavy duty Thor knee guards Nordie has - I wear a set whenever I ride and they have saved my knees on several occasions.

Just where is lake Hotshitter?

It's near Nelson Creek, down Lake Brunner way.
Access it off Nelson Creek Rd, but not signposted. The lake is on Mapsource, but not the road, so a bit of local knowledge helps. Otherwise, download the route from Ryans's ADV routes website. The track starts at Nelson Creek and ends down by Lake Haupiri, but access to Lake Hochstetter is down a side track off main forestry road.
I was there 2 days ago and there was no beach, lake so full it was up over the grass verges.

I couldn't see it on the advroutes website. I might have to have a look at work instead of waiting for it to download here. I did try to find it once before in the 4wd, endedn up scratching shit out of the paintwork, busting mirrors and breaking the aerial.

CrazyFrog

Cheers. How far do you get on that little tank?

Not far enough. 125km to a tank (8 litre) before I got really nervous, as this was eating well into the miserable 2 litre reserve, and was averaging 16.5 km per litre.
Never ran out, but had to plan fuel stops carefully, and not detour in fear of running out. I carried spare gas on 2 legs of my journey, just in an oil can in my backpack. Actually, I did scrounge some gas from a farmer near Fairlie after going up through the Hakataramea, and running on fumes near the end.
Didn't take my 13 litre tank south, as this bike is the "new" bike I was collecting. Rules about fuel containers on aircraft etc, so gave that a miss.
Working on a RR soon.....

Just watching the 'Rivers' programme on telly & am def going into the Clarence weekend after next. Weather permitting. I will research some RRs to see what to expect.
I have to admit I was pretty chuffed to get across those rivers last weekend with my rear tyre. Hopefully they won't be too deep in the Clarence.

I'm going to skip Greymouth and try the Clarence too.
No deep crossings. Nice round river rocks but only 1 or 2 could be termed "river crossings". The rest are more fords that happen to be in rivers. Nice and shallow.

To elaborate, 'cos I spoke to Shane at length Fri lunchtime. Track's mostly built if you want to take a look from the road. Sat 30th they will be putting the finishing touches on, and getting a couple of juniors out to test it. They want the juniors to be able to do it and enjoy it, so it can't be too hard for them. ADV'ers are invited to come out then and give it a bash. He said the trickiest bit might be going up the face of a loading ramp, but half of it will be ramped which most people will use anyway - shouldn't be an issue as most of us are quite happy going up short steep banks. Casing out might be an issue for adventure bikes.

Also he's going to see if he can bring another spare bike (Grace's old one?) for ppl to have a go on.

"Motocross with obstacles" is how he described it, as opposed to last-man-standing stuff. Search this (and/or the endurocross??) thread for the Richmond showgrounds event from January. Also, Morleys have a DVD of last year which they can let you watch. Did Nordie make it??

Time to think about a christmas get-together. I like the idea of a picnic at Hori Bay. We can ride via Maungatapu if time permits. Mid-week say Wed after work. Meri will drive in, carrying supplies if needed. If weather is looking rubbish, then postpone by a week.

Something in the Moutere Depression might suit our westerly cohorts better, but I'm stuck for ideas. Flora Saddle carpark, watch the sunset before departing?

We could use the caving club hut, on top of Takaka hill, as it has cooking & eating gear, and shelter. But the road is sealed, apart from the driveway. Road bikes can get in there no problem, too.

Lesson, Don,t cross rivers at rapids or swiftly moving water.

The Maungatapu at the moment is much more technical than anything in the Clarance.Went for a ride up there on Monday, geez is it ever! Really rocky & cut up due to erosion - and I'm not just talking about the big slips.

I made the mistake of adjusting the forks at the saddle, slowing the comp & rebound damping as part of my dialing-in the new springs. Faaaaaaaaaaaaark!! it made the bike almost uncontrollable in the rocks on the Pelorus side. Had to stop well before Murderer's Rock to go the other way, speeding it up. Much betterer!

btw the pylon access tracks on the norf side of the Pelorus side are great riding at the moment.

Harwood Hole carpark is a pretty crappy place to hang out, which is why I thought of the caving club hut. It's only a few km away, ppl have the option of a strop down to Upper Takaka and back, or out to Harwood Hole and back.

Bypass seems to cut about 5 minutes off at the moment, but when the traffic gets up in the summer it will save a lot more I reckon cos there were bugger all passing opportunities the other way. Best part now is that I can usually get all the way there on cruise control once out of the 50k zones. BTW the cops are all over it so be careful.

Went for a wee afternoon fang over the Porika Braeburn etc as a consolation ride for not getting my a into g and going to the Clarence. Was a beautiful day, no photos sorry cos they wiould just have been the usual Porika/lake shots. Someone has taken to the lake side of the Porika with a back hoe, its rough as.

On the way back I decided to go via the dry weather road, which is always good and whilst hooning along the seal I spotted some bikes in a paddock and one was Warewolfs. It was then that I realised that the enduro cross thing was being set up today so stopped for a nosey. I watched WW hooning around, then Shane said follow me. On this? I said , pointing at my roadbike. Anyway, convinced that it was going to go badly I hopped on and boldly followed Shane where no klr should ever go. There were log hops with ever increasing log sizes and various other obstacles that escape me now, and drop off things , but my fav was the seesaw. Only knocked one post out, and got the klr bellied at one point on some logs but managed to stay on, even after a nasty knock in the trouser area:sick:.
One (ish) lap was tiring enough so I left Warewolf trying to kick over Nordies XR and rode home to cook tea.

warewolf
30th October 2010, 20:35
Well that was a lot of fun, and quite challenging. My first proper lap with Shane I managed to get the bike beached on logs twice, and he felt I was working too hard so they re-arranged some things to make it less committing. Note I did not do the upright tractor tyres or the crotch-high log - took the questionably-named 'easier' options - and a few of the bigger step-ups I always took the slower ramped option. (What actually happens in race conditions is that a queue forms for the single-line easy option, and the better riders have a clear full width of track to bomb straight over the tougher part.)

The logs actually weren't the worst thing, as they can be taken with aplomb and it is all sweet. A bit more speed and the bike just climbs over nicely, a lot more speed and they act like jumps. The worst thing was a series of pallets arranged in low peaks jammed together like this: ^^^^ where the bike bottomed out hard on each peak - that _really_ throws you off course, literally. Might have to treat them like sand whoops, take at speed floating the front. Several times the juniors ended up off-piste, several times they had great saves... as did I. The second worst thing was a series of pallets arranged in high peaks, with flat tops, but the length of the tops gets shorter as does the length of ground between ramps. Fark that was hard work, and I've done some practice on some easier variants recently!!

As well as the obstacles, the rest of the course is well grassed, so traction is minimal. Half the site is basically flat, then drops down a 5m bank then across a creek and up the other side. So there is some fun grassy/hilly stuff and super-steep banks to launch up & down.

Lastly I had a lap on Nordie's vintage cheddar...err XR250Z... and that was interesting. Sure it was lighter, but with reasonably fresh Michelin S12s it gripped (steer & drive) way better than my thing on the grass; however those tyres made all the obstacles comparatively slippery. I got it beached on one log, didn't get enough clutch out to get drive, but otherwise it didn't seem any easier. It just doesn't stop, turn or bounce like my 640. Plenty enough go.

Shane re-iterated that Nordie's XR was there, and he'll bring Grace's older CRF230, and both are available for use on a you-bust-it-you-fix-it basis. Part of the raison d'être for the endurocross is to stretch people a bit and getting them doing stuff they normally wouldn't. As a parting remark, Shane said I should at least do the morning practice, and the first race, on the 640 to psyche out all the MXers.

Lotsa fun, but my arms ache and my forks are twisted even though I didn't crash :shit:

Float level was perfect (Cheers for the tip Jatz)

http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-dr250-1987-sh_model13172/partslist/FIG-09.html

So parts 19/20 were floating at the bottom of the carb bowl...hence the reason why it would idle but die under throttle.

I'm suspicious that last time the bike was running well (when I texted y'all), that when I opened the throttle into the 100km/h area by the MDF plant that the main jet and washer fell off

Not too sure how it worked its way loose...

Will have a play this week and see if I can get it all sorted

Least your making progress there Will

Actually on the subject of carbies, After having the bike land upside down the other week, it wasn't running real well and was flooding so I pulled the carby to bits the other night and blew clean r carb through all the orifices etc and had a good looksee.

On the Porika ride yesterday she was running better than I can ever remember. Was pulling real nice from low revs, there was no need to rev it much at all.

Might make this a regular maintenance routine now.

Well the enduro cross was a great day out. Rode my '05 640A in the C-grade Clubmans, Nordie's '79 XR250Z in the Classics, and Grace's '04 CRF230 in the Enduro class. :D

Only did 2 laps each time on the 640, it's was just too big, under-tyred, low-slung, and tiring compared to the others. Got it beached again at one point. Although I did get the hang of the sharp ^^^^ section, they got their revenge last time out when I fell off the last one, breaking an indicator - the first breakage in 5.5 years :gob: - and another time I got seriously out of shape right in front of the videographer :o but she assured me she got it all on fillum so it wasn't wasted effort. And to top it all off, I arrived with a flat tyre so I had to fix that before racing.

The venerable XR was good fun, f@ck does it find traction at low speed in the tight gnarly stuff. I had a Biaggi moment big time in the first race on the fastest section of track after the creek crossing: up the hump the front wheel came up then wouldn't go down, in fact it went up some more... right to the point I was un-weighting the pegs... then while I was looking for the softest patch of grass to eat she somehow started dragging her arse and the front came down. Bill approached when I parked the bike after the race, "btw I forget to tell you, after you ride through water the throttle seems to stick open"... goodonyamate.

In the last classic race I was chasing someone along that same fast open section that ends with an almost-stop right-hander down a sheep track into the creek. He was pretty late on the brakes, and then I thought bewdy he's missed the turn-in point and is going to run-on past the turn, then I thought nup, he's still got the throttle tapped - wheelspin and wheelie - and he's bailed off with the bike tumbling in to the barbed-wire fence. :shit: He was ok, the bike a mess, apparently his throttle stuck wide open, and Shane said he didn't have a front brake anyway

The 230 initially I found heaps shorter in the wheelbase so it handled wildly differently over the sharp up/down transitions we were doing, ie almost all the obstacles and embankments. But I got the hang of it eventually, although I got it beached a couple of times, mostly because the lower footpegs were hanging up on the joints between the tyres 'cos I wasn't hitting them fast enough to flick the bike over.

Big thanks to Nordie and Grace for their generosity, and Shane for his encouragement. Now I really do gotta get my 200 exc *and* the '84 DR250 going. And youse fellahs really need to extract digit and come and give it a go, if you don't enjoy it and don't ride better at the end of the day, then there's no help for ya. :Pokey:

Good stuff WW. I'd love to have a go at that kinda stuff - but at a 'sensible' pace. maybe i'll start looking for a DRZ400 next year as all the smaller bikes seem to cost twice as much or are pieces of shite.

Anyone got any ideas for the next NADS ride? i still haven't done the Aorere goldfields but that's a bit knarly isn't it? If there's a tamer one I'd love to take Schmidtty for a cruise.

Well the band of merry travellers headed off from Nelson on the dot of 7:13:25 on Saturday morning, headed for Kaikoura and the mythical Clarence.

We lost Bertie and Ginger to ack ack over the Wangamoas and Bubbles was last seen near the Slip Inn out Havlock way with the Hun in pursuit.

It was left to Padmei and myself to finish the mission.

Arriving in Kaikoura we pulled in for fuel and Subway.

Mmmmmm.... Bottomless hot chocolate...

We finally tore ourselves away and went inland, searching for the turn off point for the Clarence run. Which is nowhere near the Clarence River or Clarence Bridge which are quite a few klicks the other side of town and merely decoys.

It took a great deal of brilliant navigating to find the right place to turn right. Alright?

We contacted the agent there and had to do the usual name, rank and serial number bizzo and were sent on our way with the words "be out by 5 or I'll kick your arses." rattling around in our heads.

Note: Must get better earplugs. These don't stop rattling.

The sky was grey and foreboding.
No idea what it boded but we had no time for that sort of thing.
We were on a mission.

"You want what?" she says, "but they don't start until 11th December? The signs only went up yesterday!" Ah, long story short, they're not ready for applications yet. It'll be a couple of weeks till it is all finalised. There will be an application form on the website, and IIRC they're not issuing the permits until 6th December.

Like days of old, you will get an info pack with a tag, maps and other stuff. Cost is $120/year, $60/6mths, $30 for 3 months.

Access will be for Hira and Moutere North. She gave me a draft map of Moutere North, which is basically the block bounded by Eve's Valley, Pigeon Valley Rd and includes the Supplejack Rd area and Johnsons Rd area. The only entrance is via Arterial Rd at the top of the Dovedale Hill. There are also some exclusion zones within that boundary eg back of the sawmill.

$120 ain't that bad for a year, considering an organised trail ride is normally $30-40 a go.
The diversity of riding in forestry areas to increase ones skill level is invaluable, most of it is stuff you just don't get on gravel roads or the like.
What will the penalties be like for getting nicked for not having a permit. Yes, we have been spoilt with free access for some time, but with OSH and liabilites etc, the forestry companies are prolly getting a bit more cautious about who exactly they let in and for what purpose "their" forests are being used. If it was my investment, I'd want to protect it too.
Sure there will be some who choose to not pay, but it's a bit like gambling, you never know when you number comes up and you get caught. Bit like regos really:innocent:
Boaties have ramp fees, golfers  have green fees, fisherman, hunters have annual licences, any form of racing has fees. It's a signof the times.
Me, I'll be happily paying this one. :scooter:

If I could get permission to ride in Kaimanawa or Kaiangaroa Forest or the Mamakus, I would gladly pay $120 per year for access....To some degree we can already do this but not Kaiangaroa......Maybe on a Sunday...:)
I was told that getting caught in Kaiangaroa once is okay, the second time it is a 2 year tresspass notice and then confiscation etc....Ouch!

I think I'm with you on this Mr Frog, it's not a hell of a lot of coin........if you are riding regularly in the forest.
I won't be getting a permit though, because I only ride there a few times a year, if that.
Aaaand another thing..... we *cough* happily pay $15 each time to ride through Rainbow, I went through there 2 or 3 times last year, could've got a pass for the summer for that.

(i'm still not gettin 1 though)

Fluffy Cat
13th November 2010, 06:12
$15 for the rainbow 3 times a year ain't $120. But thats not what worries me.........
Next $120 for the Manga then $120 for sharlands then etc. Seen this before in a land far away soon you will have little access, unless of course you comply otherwise the usual punitive measures will be taken etc, etc. This could just be the start.

warewolf
13th November 2010, 07:26
The $120 is for Sharlands and Moutere blocks. And they are being nice in that you can get 3/6/9/12 months. Jatz you can pay $30 for 3 summer months, ride as often as you want.

This is not a new idea, it is done all 'round the country. Heck it's not even new for here, the permit scheme has been in limbo for 2-3 years; but it used to be $40-ish IIRC for an annual one, or only $5 if bought through NMCC.

Fluffy Cat
13th November 2010, 07:35
$40 sounds good and fair to me $120 is starting to get pricey. But its probably the tip of the iceberg. These business practices start this way and escalate upwards. When you go from no profit to some it always looks good. This will be hard on some people.
Don't get me wrong, I feel good that they are been so nice to me. Can't wait for the govt to let me start charging going rates for my services ....ahhh user pays...repeat the mantra:yes:.

Slightly off topic, but I was just flicking through the real estate magazine thing and there was a house for sale on maungatapu road. Its on the pelorous road bit before the turn off to the Maungatap actual, where there are a few properties. Anyway the description stated that it could be a B&B, and that it was on the cycle trail.

Since when has the Maungatapu been part of the cycle trail? or have I missed something again. Or is there a conspiracy afloat here with the closure etc.?

Not innocent at all...

We went up that road over the ford up just before the Ben Nevis turn.
They're heavily logging up there. The first couple of km's are unrecognizable.
We had a go at that little hill climb up to the right...

The hill in the pic is about a km past the top of the hill climb :D

jeez padmei, if thats the hill I,m thinking of what on earth made you think you could get the Beemer up there? You haven't even managed it on Gonzo.

Conversely I had a bloody good few hours up there, except for the overheating/airlock issue(thank god for camelbacks). Went up nevis, did you guys see the xr6?. Then went up ridge road etc and had a play then went down Frans hill and through the creeks and bushbashed my way through the flowering gorse, and home by lunch.

Two bloody fantastic rides in a row, shit the bikes running good at the moment.

Check out the short video footage if you wish. I think Nordie has some better stuff.

http://www.vimeo.com/16809102

Went out to Wairoa Gorge with Nordieboy on Schmidtty my BMW R80GS. I wanted to do a fairly casual shakedown to test a few things like my bar risers & stuff. We did the lower branch & headed up to my favourite part of the road.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/021-2.jpg

The bottom half had been logged & as Nordie said looked very different. As we wove our way up the familiar pine needled road twisted & turned - Schmidtty was running fine - nice & smooth.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/022-3.jpg

Nordie was on fire
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/023-1.jpg

I stopped at the base of a track that i've never got to the top of on Gonzo. We both had roady tyres on however it was pleasantly dry. nordie decided to have a little look - more of a 'see how far i can get' look. After a while he comes down & says it's not too bad. Usually at these times I should use my brain but anyway up i went.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/024-2.jpg

Well i have to say that the traction ol Schmidtty puts down is very nice. It just chugs up where I'd be either wheel spinning or front wheel lifting on Gonzo. We arrived at the usual turn around spot (where Woodman usually continues up) & thought 'why the hell not'. So off we go with Nordie leading. the really steep bits are ok as long as they're straight. Coming across a rutted bit i see Nordie begin to slither & carry on up. This movement however has temporarily distracted me & I begin to get offline eventually going sideways across the track. with the steepness of the incline I toppled off & rolled a few metres down.

I got up to see Schmidtty in an compromising position with gas pissing out of the tank cap. Hmmm what do I do now? Nordieeeeeee.....

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/028-4.jpg
The seat was off & the tool box on the ground. i think the moving weight of the fairly chocka toolbox was enough to break the rear lock that holds the seat on. Bugger.

I Coasted back down the hill with the engine off & in gear using the clutch to slow me down. Shit I'm never gonna do that again - you guys ever heard how horrible the driveline sounds without engine noise.

Apart from the paint melting off the tank & the seat now free floating it seems non the worse for wear. i'm glad it happened on a short ride so I can make things good. I was really chuffed though how well Schmidtty did on the tyres he was wearing. With a new set of knobblies i think barring deep ruts he'll go where Gonzo goes tho maybe a lot slower.

You should have seen the smoke coming out of the exhaust when I started it up.

We carried on & followed the road towards the top of Ben Nevis. I was very much enjoying riding the GS. Nordie as always spies a track to the side of the road - 'hang on pal we're only doing soft stuff today- aren't we?'

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/029-2.jpg

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/031-2.jpg

Nice smooth berms & hang on they look like jumps????? Oh shit Nordie we're on the downhill MTB track!!!!!!! God I hope it's not shuttle day for them.
This is the top of a very long jump & the only way out

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/032.jpg

Finally out of there

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/033-1.jpg

At the turnoff to Ben Nevis Nordie pleaded for secs to have a ride on Schmidtty - first time I've heard him ask to ride another persons bike & reliquish control of the DR. Seeing how his legs were origamied between the seat & pegs confirnmed the seat has to be lifted. i think he liked it

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/Schmidt/042.jpg

A good short ride today & high lited some more things to work on with Schmidtty. Thanks go out to my lil riding & lifting buddy Nordie.

Craig - could you give us the guts on that lid please.

Ifyou mean my helmet it is a LS2 from City cycles in Nelson (formerly Maccleans classic cycles). It is prob the cheapest flip lid but I like it cos it has an internal sunvisor that doesn't cut halfway thru my line of sight & is pretty user friendly. Unfortunately today after my spill I put the bike on the stand & put the helmet on the mirror only to watch it fall off as the mirror spun round. As the lid was up it fell awkwardly & broke a bit of plastic inside.

The Teetotal track was built by the NZ Army.
It's in the Teetotal recreation reserve.
Not sure if that's the MTB track or not but it's def. motorbike access.
Ian at Speargrass has been doing a bit of fighting to keep it open.
