maungatap was great today. i met upp with F cat at the rock wall (he knows where it is now) and we had a great hoon and inspected some side tracks as well. We went right over and went over that ford under the bridge where I got stuck in the river and we had to pull the klr out of the soft silt that it had sunk into. When we got it out we noticed that a rock had flicked my chain off. Put it back on and then we did some spirited riding back to the top of the Maungatap. Zumba ain't got nothing on trying to keep up to a 450exc on a klr over that terrain. Fcuk its rocky and it was very entertaining watching fluffycats sideways action. After recovery we tootled on down with a wee bit more of the spirited stuff.
Cheers Fluffy that was a good arvo ride, and we both managed to stay upright.:gob:

Is it what. Shit the arse end of gonzo was all over the place going up there. What'd ya think of the jumps over the very nicely graded hill? I was looing at the river when I went over the bridge & wondering who would be first to try to get thru it. Did yo make it or have to go back? Was the pelorus bank undercut or really steep.
I had never seen that purple house before - they must have cut the trees backa lot.

looing at the river ??? The bank is undercut a bit , and the best way up is to hit the steepest bit and nail it. The easier looking way has really thick mud on it which is real slippery. (ask f cat).
Actually my rear end was pretty stable. The front was another story entirely.
And yes the jumps are cool going up , not so going down.
Are we going over one evening this week?

Wednesday is good with me. (well really it's mtbing nite but the Maunga is so cool I can ride another nite).
How about 530pm at the carpark just past the rock wall? (since the wall carpark has gone) If you have to change the day I'm pretty flexible.
I'm expecting a good turnout from the NADS as well.

Was there a mx day nordie or Shane & family mucking around?
Classic mx fun day. Which is remarkably similar to Shane & family mucking around.
Kids racing, classics racing, modern bikes racing.
The modern bike riders could sit through the bumps. The classic guys didn't have a hope in hell.
Father/son race on the sons bike - that one is always a real laugh.
Some sons ride KTM250's. Some ride PW50's.
Shane on a twin shock RM370 had a good battle with a 2004 KTM300 and won.
The starts were fun.
Bike running, in neutral, left hand holding helmet peak.
Flag drop and gooooooo!!!
Shit my forearms and hands are sore!
The christmas classic meeting is going to be fun.
Motorbike soccer has been mentioned.

No worries. See you there
hang on a minute - not everyone can just gatecrash a NADS ride.
What are your credentials?
Have you ever crashed a motorbike? If so did you get off & laugh uproarishly & slap everyone on the back or weep silently into your hanky?
Are you of the opinion that tyre tread is just for those flash rich bastards that would rather ride safely & fast than spend their tyre allowance on chocolate fudge slice from Glouchester food parlour?
Would you ride down a very steep slippery track with not much chance of getting back up just to see if there's an exit?
Can you get completely lost within a km of the city centre?
Do you plan your rides around stopping somewhere for coffee/ beer & a perv?
can you lift a fully grown man & slightly plump KLR off a gorse bush?
If you've answered either yes or no to these questions then you are welcome to ride with us. If you are undecided about any of these questions then stop sitting on the fence & get committed - or not.
See ya there.

Cool. Just added it to my vids thread too.
Forgot all about our little Yamasaki riding friend :innocent:
These were from yesterdays crooze in Hira...
A cool little track was found that I wasn't sure how long it'd take to get back up.
A hill was encountered that I knew was going to be dodgy but it was more dodgy than that.
A rain rut was found that was waist deep and 1m wide but narrowed to 30cm
I also scored a CRF230'ish front number board :woohoo:
Wasn't too sure about the back up bit over there. Quite narrow and steep/rough.
http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/Trips/20101128%20Hira%20Crooze/slides/20101128-132113-0011.jpg
Dodgy hill. Even looks steep in the photos. This one leads down to where Woodman and I got stuck at the bottom of a blind firebreak and took quite a few goes to get back out.
http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/Trips/20101128%20Hira%20Crooze/slides/20101128-135515-0016.jpg

http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/Trips/20101128%20Hira%20Crooze/slides/20101128-135709-0017.jpg
Tried to get a proper pic of the rain rut but the bike kept sliding closer to it and if it went in it wasn't coming back out in a hurry. Had to walk it down. Bike on the right and me on the left of the rut.

No no no no no! - Sod that!
I went up the hill from the bottom road, past the entrance to "that" hill and continued up...

Firstly I just need to say... Stand up!
Sacrifice a $2 shop mirror to the gods at the bottom.
After the KLR gets on the dyno, it'd get up there too. More bottom end...
Whats with the seat?
It's my "may do something or go somewhere stupid" seat.
A lot lower, narrower, lighter and is so uncomfortable it makes you stand more.
Also scratches and mud would only improve the colours.

Told the boss to get stuffed today & went over the Maunga this avo. Went up the Tinline to the end - well to the last skidder site anyway. There's kms & kms of gravel roads, firebreaks & tracks to explore. Maybe well worth an expedition sometime.
Does anyone know how to get onto the old Whanga rd? Both ends seem blocked off. I have found it from the Duffa rd entrance somehow a while ago - would be a great supermoto practise track.
Edit - congrats Will con selling the lil bike - now get a bloody 650 (or a 350-400 at least) When Schmidtty is back up & running you can borrow Gonzo for a blast.

A lot better tonite. I got a new panel socket so the leads can be swapped around & actually fit tightly. One of them was rooted so the leads were set up for gas welding put without any gas. I have to get a new earth clamp too.
I was wondering why there was sooooo much spatter. All in all I'm pretty happy with the welder - I see what they mean tho- when you start you want a few more dials & controls. I'll start making my pivot pegs in the weekend.
It's pretty fumey in the workshop.

Had a nice day ride yesterday, 420km, down to St Arnaud via forestry roads, through Rainbow Rd to Lake Tennyson, then over Mallings Pass..... and back. :woohoo:
The Rainbow is very dry, the track recently graded, so lots of loose stuff on the road, made the front very skittery. Hardly any water in the fords, some were totally dry.
Mallings Pass is a great side trip off the main Rainbow Rd, allow a good hour or so return, it is kinda slow going due to all the waterbars on the track.
Note to self, don't follow a 950 Erzberg too closely, when they spin up they don't just chuck rocks, they throw the whole road at ya:Punk:

He's now known as "Gorse Boy".
"Dad said it was easy, but it's not!" were his first words when I got there.
He was half way down and the quad was at the bottom.

.
That why I'd get the girls a 2 wheeler & not a quad - they give me the shits.
I went over Maunga & along tinline rd again. If you get the chance go for a blat along tinline rd & thru tinline valley rd. It is nicely tree lined & pine needles underneath. One end ends up at a stream which may have been used by the 4wd club recently as there was a cauto sign. We should do it as a Nads ride.
Crazyfrog - are the roadies looking at turning to the darkside or just babysitting the Erz?
One thing I've noticed from mtbing & motoing these last few weeks is how dry & skittery all the tracks are - man it's gonna be a dry one this year:blink:

Yeah Craig, the KTM twins are not fully fledged dirtmongers yet, just babysitting Lenny's 950 Erzberg, and JC's XT, so were enjoying a day out in the country.
JC has biffed his SMR again, broken wrist this time, so the XT is in Tiff's hot little hands. That girl can ride.

Well the port races were omce again excellent. I reckon after the beach races we may have to do a few track races in chch so we can enter in the motard class for next year.
The first corner on the start lap was insane. A couple of guys went into the hay bales. one poor fella came in far too fast, stood on his nose for about 5m then just ploghed headfirst into one. He came out alright but he must have just been shitting himself. They were doing 190 - 200 before braking.
I was really inspired by the riders' skill. The King of the Port race at the end had all the top 4 from the different classses racing together. The motard boys would come in wide into the 1st corner & the sport bikes would have to cut in past them mid corner. The track is only a couple of bike lenghths wide:shit:
The riders seemed to really enjoy it & treated the crowd to burnouts after the final lap.
I had a go with Nordies big camera & man it's a piece of work. He's only got about 3-400 pics to go thru tonite:sunny:

That was one of the best times I've had in there ever!
The summit rope has bee pulled out again but it must have been before the last big rain because no 4wd is getting up to the summit from the Pelorus side :woohoo:
Cleared some big branches off the track on the Nelson side and that first rough bit on the way down 'tother side...
Where it's a bit rough and there's that slip off to the left?
It has a metre deep and 1.5m wide rain rut through it that's totally exposed the fibre optic cable.

If your bike went in, it wasn't coming out in a hurry...
The left hand side was the only way past and it was ...difficult... as on the right was a 1m drop onto large rocks etc and on the left was a 30m drop onto umm... trees...
You're left with a 40cm wide bit to get a bike across...
The right side is also undercut a bit...
Took several sweaty minutes...
Took 45min to make the rain rut traversable by moving up to rocks around (up to 50kg buggers), bashing sides down etc otherwise I'd have been going out via the Rai.
A hunter told me there was a slip by Murderers Rock but that bikes would have no problems.

Would it be really wanky to leave the numbers on for the dusty butt?

To be honest I like to get the riding over & have a rest at the end of the day. I'm getting softer in my old age so long full days in the saddle leave me pretty rooted & as well as the enjoyment factor dropping, I start to lose concentration & do silly things.
I want to be doing this kinda stuff dor a few more years yet- hence looking at the option of cutting out a bit of the 1st day of the DB.
It'll be quite cool riding down with my brothers (been watching too much sons of anarchy sorry...)

I,ve seen you ride a lot worse terrain with aplomb. won't be a problem to you at all. the worst bit for me was the omarama saddle for some reason, not overly challenging but it just got on my nerves and I somehow rode into a ditch.

The TT's engine is soo sweet and smooth.
The riding position needs work. Seated, the bars are perfect but my knees are around my ears.
It felt like the DR has better suspension but the lighter weight of the 350 makes it more easily deflected by rocks etc.
Seat - 5cm higher.
Footpegs - 1.5x longer and 2x wider.
Bars - 8cm or so higher.
Grips - evil, evil things! Progrip 714's FTW.
Hand guards.
GPS mount - Hmmm... Bike is 6v DC so may be able to just throw a diode in to drop a volt.

Over the Maunga, through the stream at the far bridge (moved the tree trunk) and up the other side no problems at all.
Hori Bay as far as the first 2 roads on the left (Steep Rd and Middle Rd). The little bikes breezed up them with totally inappropriate tyres.
Turned around at the top of Middle Rd and saw how steep it was...
Ummm...
We just came up that?
Jatz is on Shinko 705's and it breezed up stuff we had problems on the 650 and Big the other week with better(ish) tyres.
The bigger bikes can get to the same places but it takes a lot more effort.
The little bikes are also more easily deflected front and rear by smaller rocks etc.
The DR350 has a torquier motor (FMF pipe and re-jetted), better brakes (brilliant front), better seat (harder), better suspension.
The TT350 has a smoother engine and better bar position.
For playing and building confidence, the little bikes are great but I wouldn't want to ride one over to the Clarence or Golden Bay when there's a DR650 in the shed.
Padmei - Hurry up and get one :D

Yup.... it was a nice couple of hours, chucking the little bikes at things where you'd stop and think about it if you were on a big bike, 'cept you Padders, you'd have a go regardless.
Interesting comparing the 2 350's. I think the TT will be a weapon once it's Nordiefied, maybe drop a tooth on the front sproket and keep the revs up.
I was surprised by the shinko hooking up nicely exiting the creek on the way to Pelorous, and the way the DR lifts the front so easily, even on loosish stuff, and I do like having decent brakes and suspension
BTW.... the road edges on the new bypass are rougher, steeper and looser than they look

I went to go through on Monday arvo, but there was a road closed sign and a guy with a hi vis vest on. I could ignore the sign but not a hivis vest.
You could have worn one too and it would have cancelled out his one.
Padmei, your mini DB sounds good.
Yes it does.

So who is actually maintaining it - does anyone know?
I guess I could ask the DOC office however inthe past I haven't found them particularly helpful (unless you wanted to dump 1080 all over your land:blink:)
Once the tracks are open(if they get fixed) I'm keen on doing the mini db early in the morning - it's a nice feeling riding while others are still waking up.

Would it not be transpower ?
Looking at the damage and trying to work out how they might repair it, I think it will be impassable for 4wd's and big bikes for a while yet.
IMHO it will need either a bridge or dig/blast the road out to create a "dip" into the newly exposed bedrock.

Buggerery bollocks Damn there's not many other places to ride around here either :violin:
That gorse & wineberry was lovely to ride thru Nordie - we must do that again. Hey what about a Nads ride thru there some day - you hold the camera & I'll hold the mic & let the boys enjoy nature.

weekend after next i'm keen on another NADS ride somewhere if anyone's keen.
Either a good day out riding, or a cruise & flat food or a good day out & KFC. But not a cruise & KFC or a good dayout & flat food. Coffee of course - Americano or long black but no latte crap & def no cheescake.
guess we'd have to pick soemwhere to ride too...

You've got to be joking surely? Is this what we're reduced to doing for fun?
I'd rather sit & listen to KLR jokes all day- wait... that usually happens anyway.
