No riding for me this weekend either, but evening ride sounds ok. Actually the klr hasn't moved from where it got parked after the db. Next time I may leave it in some obscure central otago town and jut let Struan clean it before he drops it off to me.
2L challenge could be amusing. Really don,t think I would get far considering tank design etc, but yeah anything for a laugh.

The Slip Inn at Havelock used to do a cheap pizza & beer combo one night of the week. Not too much further from Pelorus after a Maungatapu ride.

I think Havelock is a bit too far for a school nite. Are the Motueakeans & Richmondites keen oncoming over? If so then I think maybe Wairoa Gorge or somewhere close to that - a few more options food wise that way.

I just went for a crooze over the Whangamoas. It was really nice just riding - you know what I mean -just the bike & the road, warm breeze, mellow exhaust note as the soundtrack. Just great.

Just got back.
35W headlights rule!
If you keep the revs up.
And don't really need to see much.
That's the closest I've come to coming several croppers on a ride.
The front and back were deflecting off the edges of rocks as I wasn't seeing them as clearly as usual. The DR is much more stable in this regard with the extra weight.

Not with 13psi and a 100 section rear tyre.
My mountain bike has a wider tyre.
Can't wait to get a 120 on the back and a proper 90 width on the front.

Planed the head, gave the cylinder a quick hone and we were on our way.
Warewolf dropped in for a visit too.

Just over the summit and Jatz also decided he didn't like the new right rear blinker either...
Umopom and I both got wasp stings. Him on his manly chest and for me it was just a pain in the neck.
Topo also killed a blinker but just from DRZ vibration. Get those wheels balanced!
From Elaine Bay over to Penzance from the summit...

Wouldn't want to do that in the morning or within a few days of rain. The green moss covered clay would be lethal.

Yip.... Elaine Bay to Penzance track :2thumbsup:
I would say it was rough  and would be treacherous heading down into Penzance if it was even slightly damp. Come to think of it.... all the rocky bits would be interesting when wet
O.K. on a big bike for an experienced rider, I will head back through at some stage 'cause MrsJatz wants to have a look, and I'll get some pics of the gnarlier bits :shit:
This is just my opinion, Topo will be along soon to tell us it was nothing and he'd happily ride a unicycle through there, with bald a tyre  ( and he probly could too)

ya know i've tried to ride one of those unicycle thingys - f_ckn impossibe they are!!!
I'd personally be happy to ride the GSPD through the Penzance at the moment, but even the slightest hint of moisture and i'd probably pull the pin due to the greasy clay/slime on the penzance end.
Had a great ride guys, first ride that i've just cruzed along in ages rather than being in a rush - really must do it more often.

Does anyone know if you can purchase coloured wiring ie Green/black in smallish lengths (or longer ones I guess)?Single-colour wire is widely available off the reel at places like Jaycar and probably auto-electrical suppliers like Youngs. Repco? I don't have a source for the twin coloured stuff used for a lot of OEM wiring, but I'd like one.
I have some that you are welcome to pilfer if you only need small amounts. Some is on small reels and other stuff has been scavenged eg I have the wiring loom from a PC because it's a whole heap of different colours in ~400mm lengths.
It is an excellent idea to follow/replicate the original colours as it will make life easier for the next person that looks at it... which could be you.

The GS attracted attention wherever I stopped, incl some kids who asked if it had been in the war. It even got to see the sun set on Mt Cook on Thurs night, which would have been way more romantic with the previous German I had given a lift...

This bird hitched a ride from Inungahua to Reefton. I knew I'd (regretfully) hit it but assumed it had gone under my wheels. Carefully extracted it & was last seen running towards the Reefton Lotto shop.
Was working at the start of the Glenroy Run Sat morning & owner has agreed to an adv ride up the Valley. He owes me a favour & would follow as support vehicle if required. Trail bikes go up there a lot so would suit light adv bikes, but best before end of March while crossings are low. 5 hour round trip ex Murchison in 4WD (probably quicker on bikes) with option of over-nighting in hut. Anyone interested?

I think the issue is more "deepness" than steepness. How high is ya snorkel? Real mountain sand flies too.
You pass the Glenroy turn off between Maruia Saddle & Six Mile.

AFAIK permission from the land holder can be hard to get, but I could be proved wrong. Also the Matakitaki is not the easiest river to get accross, but I'd give it a go :shit:

Plug (for those of you who remember him) and I had a look at crossing the Maitakaitaki just after new years back in 07. Way to deep and bouldery. Found another track along the side but don't think we went to it's end. Apparently there is a bridge near Matakitaki Station and the topo maps show the possibility of tracks along the true right i.e. if we could link it all up then can use the bridge to cross. Again would be another good addition to the northern DB1k if we can make it work. Farmer was out bailing hay and was more than happy for us to have a look around.

I will call Transpower in the next few days & find out if they are gonna rpair it. I went to Rotoroa & started going up from that side but quite big bouldery rocks at the bottom so turned around.
Did the Braeburn - freshly gravelled so a bit marbly.

In brief, we are coming down to ride Clarence River Reserve, but taking in some of the other sights.
Loose schedule is to take the 8 am Bluebridge ferry Friday the 25th Feb, have a quick lunch and gas up in Blenheim before heading over Taylor Pass to the start of the Molesworth. Stay Friday night & Saturday night in Hamner Springs or Kaikoura, so we don't have to carry all our gear into the Clarence Reserve on Saturday.
Early departure on Sat morning for Clarence River Reserve.
Sunday north via the Rainbow Rd & a late lunch at St Arnaud (nice coffee). Then over the Porika (if its been re-opened) and the Braeburn Track to staying at Reefton for Sunday night and Monday night.
Monday would be a loop from Reefton, taking in to New Creek to Denniston out to Westport, the Big River & Waitohu River.
Tuesday would be back over the Braeburn and Porika then up via various back roads through Nelson over the Maungatapu track then via Havelock /Queen Charlotte Dr to Picton to catch the 7pm sailing back to Wellywood.

How about 10am departure from my place (8 North Rd) to have a look up Mt Duppa?
No idea what's up there really but you should be able to almost get back to Hira.
Steep Rd at the beginning of the Hori Bay road is cool at the moment too as a starter...

That shall be known henceforth as the "Gorse and Gorser" ride...
Left just after 10:00 got home 15:00.
Steep Rd (not all the way), Middle Rd out Hori Bay way then Mt Duppa for Last Rd, The road off Last Rd, The Old Wangamoa Highway.
The idea was sound.
Take every left branch and you should end up back at the entrance in a day or two :D
That was very fun :niceone:
Went onto reserve at the Wangamoa Summit on the way back.
Thanks guys :woohoo:
Padmei
12th February 2011, 14:35
I had my first off on tarseal as you well know.
We got onto the old Whangamoa rd - which is an abandoned piece of tarseal road adjacent to the highway they used to use before installing a nice straight bit.
They used touse it for car hillclimbs & also motorcycle ones ( if you did it 3 times you could get your licence for the port races). It's agreat piece of empty road to practise cornering
I roared off while Fluffy & Nordie were chatting & was having a great time making full use of the road untilI went into a corner & before my mind could register what was happening I was sliding across the road.
People have described that sickening sound of metal on tarseal & now I know what it sounds like.
I quickly got up afraid the boys might ride into my bike however Nordie used his superhuman reactions & went around me.
Luckily there was no damage to the bike - crashbars & handlebar end took it all & all I ended up with was a slightly twisted ankle & bit of graze on the knee-hardly worth a mention really.
All I can say is "Lets hear it for body armour:woohoo:"
A great ride tho. The KLR went excellently well & we found some more dead end tracks into gorse we hadn't ridden before:yes:

An exchange student ??:killingme. Was that intentional?
Glad you escaped your road trash ok. Not a nice feeling.
BTW is that front headlight mounty bit that we talked about amongst all your spare klr parts?? If you haven't got it I have another plan for the headlight.
I got the bike in a zillion bits at the moment and am intending on fixing all those little unimportant but nevertheless slightly annoying bent/broken/trail repaired things that still function perfectly but are not quite perfect anymore.

Wow.
That bit on Slaters Rd near the Wangamoa Summit at the skid site where we turned back to look at the water reservoir is only 200m from where we got to on the Mt Duppa roads.
In the vid where I say "left or right" if we could have got through the left then it would come out at SH6 and also loops back and possibly connects with the Lost Highway.
I'm going to fill up the TT and go back for a look at some of the bits we missed this arvo.
NordieBoy
13th February 2011, 16:28
Well that was even gorserer.
I finished off the rest of the tracks and also went along some a bit further than yesterday.
Did the run up past the start of the Mt Duppa walk and also found a bit off the Lost Highway that may link to the "left or right" bit.
I went up top to that bit and went left for a bit but would need help to get further.
A good machete and a hand saw would clean some of the tracks up quite well.
Off to get me some fush 'n chups now.

Umm was that roadkill feral frog?
Nope, it was a freshie from the bush. Met a hunter on the track who needed a hand to carry it out. His dogs had bailed it and he killed it with a knife. He was a bit disappointed he didn't catch any pigs. Real kiwi joker that one, not a rough bastard, nice bloke.
Of course the stag was at the bottom of the gully near the creek. Fresh meat is bloody heavy when it's not sitting in a nice poly tray wrapped in cling film and you've gotta haul it up through the scrub, bashing through gorse, manuka, and the like.

There is a laid back trail ride next weekend.Unfortunately I will be at theWeetbixTri.
There aresome good picsof you guys at the beachraces on Jennines photo page. You have to scroll thru a bit to get tothem tho.
I'm gonna put my clutch back in on Schmitty & do some more polishing.
BTW after my clutch went again (like at the beach races) on Eddies ride last week, I found out that the bottom adjustment nipple lock nut had vibrated away & the cable had no tension on it.
It was a simple fix & a relief that nothing was seriously (& expensively) wrong.A bit of locktite will solve it.

I would recommend the MBT Leopard 2 mk 4/5 or Challenger 2....The Leopard is about 50tons and the Challenger can be up to 65tons with the extra armour pack.
Would those be big enough for you sir!. Of course placing one of them on the TT might cause the frame to get scratched so to be safe just put a little masking tape where you think there might be probs.

Geared the bike down a bit and went through the Maunga this afternoon.
Wanted to stand the whole way and trials as much as I could.
Dabbed at the slip in wet clay digger tracks, small creek crossing when the front went on a slimy stone and going down on the Pelorus side to the river in all the loose stuff.
The summit cable has been replaced again :niceone:
At the exposed cable the drop-off has crumbled a little more...
Some Wee Strom riders at the Cafe said that the BMW club went through the Maungatapu recently.
Took them 4 hours. It was rougher than expected :weird:
On the way back I dabbed going up the slippery bit out of the river. 3 goes and 5 min of pushing later I was at the top. I haven't had the stitch for years :apumpin: Almost forgotten what it's like.
Dabbed again in the digger treads at the slip and that was all for the rest of the ride.
Good, fun workout.

It's going to be difficult to get over the river below the bridge on t'other side of the Maungatapu at the moment. The rain has pushed the channel through against the south bank and it's eating into it. A little deeper that I'm willing to risk.

http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/Trips/20110305%20Maungatapu/slides/20110305-155659.jpg
On the way back I went over the little creek crossing by the bridge and waterfall (Yes Padmei, there is really a waterfall there. No, it's been there for years) and crossed in the middle. Upon exiting the water my front wheel almost stopped as there is a nice little vertical bank there. Then the back wheel almost stopped. I didn't stop. I'm quite happy the tank is nylon and not steel as it would have a dent in it now.
A 4wd has tried to go over the slip and just cut some nice deep smooth tracks in it.
Deep enough that the bash plate hit on both sides.
http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/Trips/20110305%20Maungatapu/slides/20110305-164350.jpg
Nailing it in 1st from 5m back wasn't enough to get up onto the slip proper.
Lots of pushing was.

I rode through the ditch at the fibre cable as the ledge is getting skinnier and I've done it a few times now on both bikes and am over it. Completely over it. I still get the willies remembering the last time and the small, wheel deflecting rock sitting in the middle just before it that I didn't see until my wheel was deflected...

On a completely different topic, how about a bit of a nelson crew bike build? I've just swapped my old riding boots for an 89 KDX200e, she makes Jatz's old CT look like a minter but with a bit of work would make a great trail hack for laidbacks and XC's.
I was thinking if people wanted to donate parts/beer/scarcasim then i'd be happy to drag it along to the rides as i'll be trailering the DRZ to all of the XC/laidbacks this year, so that it could be abused by all and sundry all over again.
I'll be getting it sorted over time regardless but if anyone's got any old 2t bitz-n-bobs lying around it may help speed things up and lead to a few good shed nights before winter sets in.
What say you all? if there's any interest i'll post what she needs/wants and go from there.

Alrighty then, I'll give it a good clean tomorrow and put up a lit is thing's that will be needed to get the bike sorted. I probably should say that it will never be a "like new" bike again but should prove to be a bit of fun.
At this stage i can say that it is a decent runner and but needs a new clutch basket/plates which i think will be the only real expense which i've got a few leads on at the moment.
a new front brake caliper is very high on the priority list if anyone's got a spare one (can swap it for a 6 piston one of a hyabusathingy).

Price is right though, I'm guessing there's a reason why it's just dropped $500 in price, ah well, $ in pocket is a winner

More importantly.After today I learnt:
Fran is a very good friend. Not many people would push start a mates bike time & again with full riding gear on.
If Fran gets off & WALKS his bike down a hill & you stupidly follow him you have bitten off more than you can chew.
Fran is not a very good friend sometimes, in fact he sometimes is a complete utter bastard.
If he leads you off suddenly to a track "oh yeah they used this in the cross country mumblemumble1984" then you will be ripped up with fricking blackberry, be typing that nite with fricking gorse embedded in your fingertips & have a totally rooted back from where the track turns from the shredding machine from Caligula to the twin gaping fricking chasms of doom which we have to somehow get past.
OH YEAH I FORGOT- HE IS ALWAYS SMILING AT THE BOTTOM WITH HIS FRICKING VIDEO CAMERA GOING:angry2:
Apart from that he is a good bloke & his help today was much appreciated
