Shanes got a pile of ex-race tyres that you can choose from inc some Michilin S12's I think.
He's trying to remove any excuses people have to not go to Tap next weekend...I've got a choice of well-worn Metzeler MC4 (soft terrain like S12) or the once-used Michelin MH3 int-hard copy. Kinzett could be a real slick clay-fest, so without a decent tyre me & the 640 won't be going anywhere fast. I'm thinking I'll be a starter but may just spend 3 hours getting some practice at muddy hill climbs.

A worn S12 will probably be the best bet on the day.

Lovely weather for ducks.

I can't wait to try the trials tyre on a cross country. But Kinzett Creek is not an ideal area to test this...

How about tomorrow 1pm unless its really really shitty like it was this morning.

I'm putting on the GPS & wiring a 12volt outlet on the snotmonster today as well as trying to sort out a fuel drip out of one of the five- yes count them- Five clear vent pipes running from the carb.

Lee says there should be a screw at the bottom you can undo that'll let fuel piss out of the bowl & a good few knocks should unstick the float. I haven't found the screw yet but haven't investigated properly.

Gotta take the LHS fork of the KLR & replace a bloody fork seal too.

I can't wait to try the trials tyre on a cross country. But Kinzett Creek is not an ideal area to test this...That's the problem. Trials tyres don't like mud and just about every course has enough patches of mud that it could be a showstopper. :crybaby:

Farm based x-countries wouldn't suit them but Hira would be purrrrfeckt...

I don't think I could have got back up the DH track at all with a knobbly and the trials tyre did no damage and wasn't spitting anything out the back...

Tried to get a Vee Rubber VRM 308 and Pirelli MT43 (both about $150) and they're both out of stock. The IRC is $$$ and the Hidenau is $200...

Today the NADS went Erzburg baby:headbang:

You know that if we totalled the distance we each rode today it would probably equate to a couple of laps around a supermarket aisle. Amazing how many stupid things we can do in such a short distance.

I succeeded in launching my KLX up & over a tank trap that I knew I wasn't gonna get up- it landed, parked itself upright & stopped its' motor by itself. I'm a bike throwing God:woohoo:

For some strange reason we all decided to see if we could ride up a really slippery rocky stream. The inevitable happened-carnage everywhere:facepalm:

Time was gettin on and the rain was coming in so we decided to deter from the easy safe way & take the pine tree expressway. Much bike lifting & sliding over fallen trees later we found the road - yehaa

That was one of the best rides I've done for a long time. The KLX went very well- even better after WW adjusted the suspension.

Woodmans KLR 685 is a big grunty beast now:woohoo:

Met Haddon at the golf course. He's looking for forks without pitting for the F650. Met Warewolf halfway up to horse bridge. I did every side track as far as they could be ridden.

Including the river crossing at the bridge on 'tother side. Which was a leeetle deeper than I was expecting...

I'm surprised (again) how well the 705's went.

Even a year ago I would have been hesitant trying some of the tracks with knobs on after this amount of rain.

Only took a couple of pics...

What do you guys use to clean your sliders where the fork seals touch?Prise out the wipers and slide clear of the outers, give them a clean. Clean the fork inner to the edge of the oil seal. Carefully slide the corner of an old business card between the oil seal and the fork inner and slide it around; try to scoop out any grit rather than push it in. As a minimum you should spray the entire fork inners and wipers with a lubricant to reduce stiction - I use Motorex Joker 440 synth oil spray as it won't cause issues when it blends with the synth fork oil, and generally I avoid silicon sprays due to side-effects. Spray the fork, slide the wiper up and down a few times to spread out the spray, then re-fit the wiper. I've had good results with filling the void of the seal side of the wipers with snyth grease, too. Seems to stop a lot of grit making it to the seal.

Mine has gaitors, gators, garters, fork boots so you can't see the dirt trapped in there.Fixed.

Hi..
All you Nelson bush whacker...
Do you know where the track from the Nelson/St Arnaud Rd
to the North bank road is....If its still there/usable..
I only went though it once meany years when at school
living in Wakefeild.. The guy across the road use to set bait lines in there.
I went in a couple of times with him...
Its that long ago (early 70s) i can't remember where to fined it...
I do remember a wooden bridge with the remains of a shed or house
near it...
I could be wrong but I think it went in not to far passed the old foresty camp
on the St Arnaud road behind spooners...
I have used google earth.. theres seems to be a lot more forestry than I remember
in the area I think its in...but over 40 years that could have changed...

Any one know it ?

The best you'll get is up North Bank to the Branch and across the river there...

Woodman

I reckon I did it a few years back on my xl600. I remember it came out by (think) the old forestry camp. Problem was though that I wasn't on a road the whole time and I can't for the life of me where it started on Northbank road, if indeed it was northbank road.
Have been thinking for a while to try reversing it (starting from the camp Nordie not doing it in reverse:yes:) and seeing where it comes out.

Does this help??

Case 1: Someone who was tresspassed from a forest was being driven through it over a public easement road. Forestry security caught them. Both were being taken to court until the driver piped up and said "Oi, it's a public easement" and the forestry company backed down.

Case 2: If you've got a road legal vehicle and a valid drivers license then you're sweet and pay no fees. Even in Hira. But you need to stick to the road obviously...

Cheers fullahs for a pleasant afternoon. I only got one decent pic, a few half decent ones, and some reeeeally crapy ones  And some clasic video of someone acting the goat and falling over, but it would take to long to upload it so it'll not be made public :innocent: (you owe me Woodman  )

Good ride today boys. The saw was outstanding in its ability to clear a clean line for the bikes- well done Nordie- I'm gonna get one now.

Umopom if you pass on to Gaaarrrieee (Brommy accent) to search for oil consumption/ checking oil in Thumpertalk (http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/search.php?searchid=12006428) He'll find some interesting info. I'm not worried about mine so much now as I think I was checking it incorrectly. If he wants to monitor his, we can compare on the DRZ/KLX thread buried somewhere in here.

We're just all style baby:yes:Reminds me of the Dakar videos I watch on youtube.
I see you guys missed my navigational skills. Those slopes must have been pretty steep out Hori Bay.

You can see how well the KLR puts it power to the ground with lower revs compared to the lighter revier bikes

Good stuff Nordie

NordieBoy
23rd May 2011, 08:34
Yeah, Jatz'z gearing was so high he was either stalling or spinning, and that's not ideal for a road tyre...

I got called an "utter bastard" or some such coming off the beach at Hori Bay :innocent:
Wonder what that was about?

I know there's video of the "incident" but wonder if it'll ever be shown :innocent:

The jetting on the TT is definitely not right, past 5,800rpm just doesn't work properly, considering max torque is about 6,000 and power about 7,000.

Tapped in top, tucked in going up the Whangamoas and Jatz passes me, standing up straight

What's the plan this weekend fellas? Taking a long weekend (up Friday back Mon) to visit the land of NADS and have just sorted out the rack for transporting the EXC.

Saturday works best for me but I need a guide or two to check out some of these "new" tracks. Seems I might have been a weekend too late.

Went for a great blat this avo thru Hira forest. Only got 1/2way up Hurricane Hill before deciding it was a tad slippery. I've figured out that Nelson has very slipperyrocks when theyare wet.

I'm not sure if I'm paranoid however I saw 3 cases where branches were draped across tracks. I saw 2 on the way to the wall (I stopped & removed one on a blindish descent). There was another right up by Kaka hill on the exit shute of a track parallel to the road.
These branches were about arm thickness, & didn't look like they could have fallen down to be perpendicular to the track.
I don't know I may be imaging things but found it a bit odd, they were miles apart so maybe a coincidence.
Anyway a good muddy ride with only 3 mtbers, a goat & a rabbit keeping me company out there.

Took the tractor for a wee ride today.

Decided last night that i haven't been up Mt patriarch for about 6 years, and then only once, so headed off early this morning over the maungatap. Had digger issues with not one but two diggers blocking the track. Had a yak with the drivers who are a bit per[lexed at why they are spending so much keeping the maunga in good nick.interesting?

Got lost trying to find Mt patriarch but eventually found it. The road up was a mix of rocks and washouts and slippery mud and moss and there was a weird slippery orange section too which was fcuken slippery. It was a lot further to the top than I remembered but it was a great ride albeit foggy and raining.

Headed down and then went through the tua marina? track and then rode over Port Underwood road. Port Underwood road was fantastic and I indulged in a bit of spirited riding as it were. I need to do something with my brakes cos they faded something shocking:shit: a few times.
When I got onto the seal on the road to Picton is where the fun started. One word bloody slippery. I have never had so much rear wheel slippage on tar before, scary but fun in a motard kinda way. fuelled me and the bike up in Picton and headed home through Queen charlotte .

Great day, no bike issues and managed to stay on.

Nads we need to do a mission into Port Underwear soonish. Lots more tracks up there now.:woohoo:

BTW the pics aren't in order.

TADMOR (from May)

Round 2 of the Nelson Cross Country series is on Sunday June 12

Shane and Rob say
[I]WET OR FINE

The track has been tinkered with and significantly reworked from earlier events so now a KTM 640 adventure tourer (not ridden by Shane) can get around it, so that means great fun for the Junior and Senior and the Clubmen riders - whatever the weather throws at us. We have even been advised that the forecast rain for Saturday night has been cancelled due to premature emptying of the rainery in the Tadmor area, so Sunday's round should enjoy some of that non-wet stuff we haven't seen much of lately!!!.

Due to the May weather postponement another round will be fitted into the calendar at a later stage. Call Shane for more information.

The NEW trailrider class is specifically designed for first time/novice racers, or for parents who want to join their Junior racers on the track.
The Senior class sign in is from 8 to 11.30am with racing from noon, so come along and enjoy the tracks.

I'll be going over to photograph all you serious  racers.

I really want to run the trials rear but know it's not appropriate for that track.

I'll ride over 'cause me and me bike are staunch.

I think your term "2 eels mating in a bowl of jelly" would be appropriate for the track though...

Spent an afternoon on the DR250S, carb is virtually rebuilt, just need to borrow some circlip pliers from Dad to replace the needle jet and we'll be done. Managing to get a wee way off idle at the moment.
Next step is to tidy up the wiring as we've got a bit of a flickering headlight, pretty nice to hear it running again though.
In other news, Han is pregnant again so I need to get this bike running as a new bike will be 2 1/2 years away otherwise!

Well done on lots of different levels there Will:banana:

Went to go for a quick hoon this arvo but the uber reliable klr let me down for the first time ever. Wouldn't idle and then would only start on full throttle so it must have been fuel related. Couldn't see any tubes off so pulled the carby off, pulled it to bits, sprayed clean r carb through every orifice, put it back together and it ran like a dream. Still dunno what was wrong and missed out on my ride :(but a pleasant enough arvo in the shed anyway.

No 3D printer yet, I've played with em a bit at uni, haven't come down in price as much or as fast as they had predicted. (Mind you in 2006 it cost $150 to make a golf tee)...Boys College has a multi axis CNC milling machine, phwoar

as for the time for working on bikes note :ar15: sending them away to the in-laws is the key, this time anyway!

Great ride.I reallylike the quick 2 hr rides. Really enjoying the flexibility of the lite bikes (& my back again).

My fuel range is getting better too- got 120ks before I got to reserve. 120ksout of 8litres= 15k/l I am guessing. Def buying the 17L tank bugger the extra expense.

I.E. jetting, muffler, float level, gearing.

Don't try to talk me out of it Jatz Iwill have a much much bigger tank than yours and my bike is fuel injected. The previous owner did it when he bored it out to 860cc. In fact I believe it is the fastest DRZ in New Zealand. It did 11secs at Meremere. Straight up

I've only just realised the extra brackets the rearof the bike are for the wheelie bars since he told me. Frick it's fast... really really fricking fast... faster than a fricking fast thing with a fifty fricking knot wind up its fricking freckle.

Topo gets, around 100km to a tank doing XC's and anywhere between 140 and 160km on gravel roads being easy on the throttle movements (it's the AP that does it!)

Padmei, if you put a bigger tank on it you'll start using it for rides where you should be using the beemer, also if you are looking for tanks the yamaha wrf400/425 one will fit with very minor mods apparently. I'll find the thread on adv later.

Nup gonna get a bigun alright.

I did a bit of research on dirtbike world & the figures they're pumping out are consistent with my sloppy records & Topos experiences- 100-120ks before reserve doing offroad stuff. Those with the17L sarfaris are getting 20Litres into them & getting about 380 Ks on a Cape York trip. Soundsgood to me.
Of course the seppos on thumpertalk can get about 300ks out of a can of baked beans so I haven't really worried about their claims.

I bought it to do adv riding & don't want to frick around with fricking gas stations every halfhour.

It is pretty fricking fast too don't forget.

Schmidtty isn't actually gonna get ridden- it's morelike my securityblanket- always there, always in bits, always needing me- anyone seen "Boxing Helena"?- that kinda relationship.

That's the goal...looking like it should be a goer by spring, got a problem with a dodgy earth but a rewire/tidy up is in order so I'm getting the soldering iron out...not trusting blade terminals and crimping tool this time.

Cheers Pete...but not quite what I'm after, I'm guessing the only way to get it will be to get someone to make a scan of the workshop manual...NMC wouldn't have one would they?

The one for the TT is crap as well.
The DR one is bearable.

Got the trials rear back on the TT offroad rim.
All ready to play in the hills and for the cross country.

T7 for cheap brake pads

From the sounds of it the track is getting pretty rooted. Might be better when it dries out a bit. 140 bikes went thru one weekend 4 weeks ago.
I did it about 93 with cantilever brakes!! It hadn't even registered that you'd run out of brakes - I mean you could quite happily get 2 years without changing them normally.
Anyway I was wondering what all the steel wool was around the hub when I noticed the rim... Then the tyre carcass split- got all the way out with a bulging tube.
Make sure you take a spare hanger too. There's always one that breaks ona trip in the middle of nowhere. On 2 different trips thru there this year that I know of, guys have had to do it single speed because of that.

Have fun tho

My Tektro iO Mechanical discs are too weird for t7 :( $29 a pair is the best I can find...I guess it's good to know that it is that bad as I was hoping that it was DOC being cautious! I'm heading through mid-week (bloody teachers!) so hopefully a bit quieter. Sounds like a spare folding tyre or two amongst the group is going to be a winner .

As for the amount of use... well if you deny access for 15 years to a popular ride and then only temporarily allow access only in the worst season for damage... it's hardly surprising it's copping a hammering. So many people are wanting to do it for fear the trial will not result in permanent access being returned. Despite the muddy conditions, in that article DOC say the track's no worse off than heavy use by trampers.

Very uneventful ride, but it was a good ride and its always good to go somewhere new, but when i got home I noticed a hole in my front guard. Has this happened to any of you guys cos its a first for me.Didn't notice anything and it must have taken a hell of a velocity to smash a hole clean through like that, unless someone was taking potshots at me.
