New or old D801?

Old ! so old it probly needs a walking stick
It came from "upstairs" at the local bike shop, hence the bargain price
I guess it will be toast after a 100 k round trip on the seal.

Get 25-30psi in it for the seal to get it to last and 14psi for off road.

I am a bit shattered. Good typical nads ride, and another set of bent handlebars:angry:

Got a flat tyre towards the end so had to ride home at 50k. Lucky that tyre was condemned 500k ago. Thanks for the escort home Rob.

Cheers guys

Fantastic video Nordie & the pics were great Jatz.

The assorted bikes were parked outside the Chateau Rhubarb as their owners warmed themselves on the outside benches in the bright winter morning sun.
The usual Nads had turned up for this mid winter run- Nordie tt350, Jatz DRz350, Woodman KLR685, Umopom 690, Fluffycat 450exc, myself on the KLX400 & a surprize apearance from Kiwiham on his new 660 Tenere.
Lattes & americanos were served as we caught up & talked motorcycles. Attention turned to Kiwiham with his plans to travel to Sth America on a motocycling adventure & the escapades of Striking Viking in Columbia were discussed.

As the caffeine kicked in we suited up & headed up Pig Valley towards the Wairoa Gorge.
The short sealed section took us over rolling farmland till we hit the windy gravel roads that followedthe course of the Wairoa River. The sunlight warmed our backs as we periodically escaped from the canopy of the shady bush lining the road.

The clear green water burbled over dark cold rocks. Many sheltered picnic spots we passed were coated with deep white frost & caution was taken around corners with the onset of permafrost evident. The odd slip from the recent heavy rains had breached the road with clay& mud.

We arrived at the fork of the Wairoa & chose to take the left branch. Our intention was to ride our favourite slice of pine needled road to a pleasant lookout over the Tasman bay.
Unfortunately it had been gated since our last trip however we weren't to be deterred by this as experience had taught us that persistence would pay off.

Some began piling rocks beside the gate to ride up & around the gate on the bank whilst the rest rode down into the adjacent tanktrap & with a bit of heaving pushed up & over the top.

Obstacle no.1 sidestepped we rode carefully down to the riverford. Stopping& putting a foot down we immediately realised the concrete was totally iced up so carefully the first riders crossed the flowing river. On the fatherest bank the exit was slipperier & caused the first of a couple of offs.

No broken bones but another set of bent KLR handle bars later we roared up the road. Usually this was a road for muchos velocity however the mud was wet & traction around corners dodgy.

Soon enough we arrived at our usual sidetrack of despair & leading the charge I rode the KLX up & across the digger tracks searching for something for my rear wheel to glue to. As usual it ended with a bike on its side on the downhill side. And as usual Nordie putts up with his trials rear tyre one handed giving me the peace sign. I returned the gesture- sort of.

One by one the team got up inlcuding Kiwiham reving out the Tenere & moving around on it like a MXer. At this stage I was contemplating finding some new friends.
A few more slippery bits, laughter & bike droppings then we descended the track & cruised up to the lookout.

Photos were taken, jetting issues discussed & saddling up we backtracked down to the road & aimed our steeds towards the BenNevis carpark.

The road up had a few little shortcuts, but being on the Northern face were pretty dry & not too rutted.

The last pinch to the BenNevis carpark is notoriously steep & beneath a thickcanoy of trees - riding with sunnies on or a darkvisor makes picking a line tricky. A stray rock sent my front wheel lofting to the right & as I lost control of the bike I saw a blue flash of a Tenere in my preipheral vision. Images of a new expensive bike flashed before my eyes, however it veered sideways & carried on up - phew!

Jatz, woodman & a few others were at the top where the track leveled out enjoying the presence of thick snow inthe open gullies. Although the surrounding hills are deep with it at the moment it was a pleasant surprise to see it so low.
Woodman nicely shared a ball of it with Jatz as he posed for a pic.

By now 3 hours had passed & a hearty 40kms had been ridden. it was time to return for a debrief at Chateau Rhubarb.
Woodman unfortunately suffered a puncture on the return home. As we passed him along the gorge he was riding pretty well balanced over the front wheel. Luckily it was a pretty rooted tyre.

We bade our farewells after a coffee & air up & began the hiway run back into Nelson as others split up & headed their respective ways.

Another great ride with the Nads. The weather was fantastic & warm, the countryside stunning & the company a nice bunch of blokes.
Thanks guys

Back from trip on MTB through the Heaphy track, I have to say it was pretty damn fantastic, no idea how the through riders do it in one day...

We went Nelson -> Karamea IMO definitely the better/easier route, bulk of the climbing knocked off on first day, steady Dun Mountain railway type climb up to Perry Saddle hut.

I almost wore through a front set of pads (discs), but the guy in our group with V Brakes shot his front and rear pads once.

Swing bridges were a killer, I'd just do the crossings next time (water below knees on every one).

I used panniers, decent Blackburn ones...great for balance etc. but basically ripped to pieces by the constant vibrations - my only mechanical issue was repairing them with cable ties.

Spare derailleur hanger definitely a winner, we carried a universal one...it did the trick but wasn't fully operational and is only a temporary fix.

Not a single flat amongst our group but some amazing grinding paste made from sand/chain oil/mud...I'm yet to inspect the damage closely  at very least I'm up for a new chain.

Icing on the cake was the flight out with Golden Bay Air $200 each, took two flights to get 4 bikes and 4 guys back to Takaka in the little Piper pa-28, they relocated the van from Brown hut carpark too.

Wicked trip!

Kia ora guys.
I'm baaaack.

I went & picked up my Safari Tank from the Gold Coast & man am I glad to be back in Nelson with my motorcycles.
The usual 3hr return flight from Coolangattta turned into a 50hr ordeal involving boarding the same broken plane twice, 2 overniters in hotels in Brisbane & Auckland & 2 days spent waiting in airports.
Last holiday I'm ever having outside of Nelson I tell ya!

Not all bad tho - went on lots of rides, ate lots, had fun with the lil ponies, saw lots of very nice young women :innocent:
Not much motrcyle content tho...saw a couple of Victory cruisers & a hotted up 640adv motard thing.
Shit they love their utes - seemed every 3 vehicle was flash as Holden/ Ford ute

While the family flew from Akl to Nel I flew to Chch to pick up the car & drive it back. I didn't get pinged for GST on the safari tank it so thought i'd donate the amount to the nice friendly policey man out of Culverden:facepalm: ...again:facepalm:

To fill in afew of the gaps. My first (of many:facepalm:) off was around that very slippery corner below the caretakers. The road in was pretty slippery on the knobblies.

The young fella had just ridden up the road to the caretakers ahead of us& somehow jumped off his bike before it went off the side. His old man was giving him a hard time cos he had just bought him a new rear tyre. The kid was smiling thru it all so had the right attitude.

The Maunga is really really smooth at the mo. The graders have been thru & none of the bogs & holes are there anymore.
The drop down to the creek at the other side is quite steep at the bottom (where I hesitated) the track up the other side is easy as- apart from the few round rocks at the base.

Part II atHori bay should be a blast -plenty of stupid things done.

The safari tank went really good. All I need to do is find some more manly looking petrol- pink is a bit DR riderish - no wait:facepalm:

The new tank really improved my fuel consumption -I only went thru about a 1/3 of a tank compared to the old tank.

How did you find the tank weight wise?

How did you find the tank weight wise?

It makes it quite KLRish with the extra weight at the front. Doesn't deflect off rocks so much...

Padmei
7th August 2011, 19:17
I did notice the front was very planted. As Nordie said it didn't deflect as much. I think some work could be done on the forks if one was that way compelled (I'm not)
I did notice going over the jumps that the front definitely didn't come up as high.

It was a bit harder to pick up than before.

The tank does turnit into more of an adv bike than a trailbike visually. I have to protect the inside of the tank from the pointy bits on the radiator

How times/things have changed..
Not been though there for 20 years..
Blen side looks unchanged... But the
Nelson sides a motorway now...
wheres the 1.5m rock cliff.... & the 100m
up hill climb over 150 / 200mm rocks?.. think
I seen that area it was beside the stream..
there also was a small wooden bridge
half way up on the Nelson side..

Can yer still ride the Hira forest ?
there was some great areas in there...
nice narly rides down into the teal & lud velley areas.
Dip road was like 6 or 8 jumps one after another..
And up the quarry along the fence line..good high speed run..

And what about brook street ?... went in behined the soccer feild.
up into the tetragee, was a MX track in there ,then up to the top
then drop down into the maiti or go right though the native bush
come out on the top of the Richmond rangers ride passed
the fire look out and down into the Aniseed valley..

Are those rides still possable... or all closed off these days ?

And yer could ride the sand flats on the blen side of Nelson..
nothing to have 20 plus bikes there on a sat...there was a nice
super cross type track there... but the greenie thought we mite
run over a crab. So that got closed off just after I moved
over here "Blenheim"

dam great vids keep em coming....

I used to have one of those - bloody good fun you felt the speed when your arse was 3 inches of the sand! Always told the wife safest sport out there - no problems, was all good till I saw some buggers doing 360s in them - went quite well up until the time I decided that double the speed would turn a 270 into a 360, didn't see the rut  and well you can imagine the rest - 2 days until we flew to London with our 2 pre schoolers and 1 baby and I end up with a broken collar bone  wife wasn't too happy - no sympathy WTF?

Well I got home before dark.
Ended up having a bit of a no-nads ride as they ended up being a wee bit late.
After grinding to a holt on the ice I decided not to persevere with the mountain climbing and spent some time exploring some of the roads at the base of the hill, need to spend more time in that area.
The nads were last seen reducing tyre pressure and heading into the snow with much gusto (perhaps never to be seen again?)

Valves were all replaced along with complete top end rebuild ( I think that part was done by Vin Orr so it probably is ok) it does sound 'toight' in a good way. The bugger is that the good motor is from a Z model rather than an S, so no battery/charging circuit. I think a new battery might actually help the starting issue...will get one on pay day...am I better off getting something decent or will anything that holds a charge do?

Will let Piglet keep his trophy! If I can find more $ I think I'll invest in a 1 owner < 10 year old bike of > 250cc ~$4000 and keep the DRs

A helicopter with a monsoon bucket and three fire crews were fighting a fire that spread into a forestry plantation northeast of Nelson this afternoon.

The fire began at about 1.30pm in scrub on a steep hillside off Macs Rd, 3.5km from the state highway up Lud Valley and about 75metres from the nearest house.

Fire crews from nearby Hira, Nelson and Atawhai went to the scene and a helicopter was being used by by 2.30. A second helicopter was called in after the first had problems releasing the deluge from the monsoon bucket.

By 3.15pm the fire, which had burned through large pines to the top of the ridge, appeared to be well under control.

Lud Valley, about 20 minutes drive from Nelson, is occupied by lifestylers and the forest backs onto it.

Macs Rd is near the road that curves around up to Mt Everest from Teal Rd.

All good for tomorrow thanks Topo, although I will have to renege on the bbq offer - it needs a clean! (unless anyone is desperate for a bbq in which case I'll get off my arse and clean it. )

Anytime from 7pm onwards.

Having just received a care package from o/s I have a few jobs can be done:

install 950SE/690E front brake master cylinder
install new chain and sprockets (including muchos bling ironman rear) which will involve the use of the Binford 9000 to machine the case saver to Duke specs
various dodgy fasteners can be replaced
also it's time to re-fit the touring bits: rack, pillion pegs etc.

Anyone who gets the urge can have a crack at the dr250. It should just fire up with fresh fuel and maybe a clean spark plug, pending how leaky the carb is. Which reminds me: I've also got some welding needs doing: a couple of bits on the bike plus also some on my trailer. This will be for another time. Anyone got a welder and skills that could help, please?

Padmei, bring a USB stick for the Wattsy vid. You're welcome to raid the rest of the collection, too.

You can do the trailer then :D it's already been bodged.

However the bike bits are an internal fairing bracket that nobody sees, and the bash plate which is so badly munted no-one would care about any dodgy welds - but that is alloy and might need a practised hand. That bash plate lives up to it's name and has certainly earned its keep.

About the Zombie Bike
It has been sitting outside in the weather minus a few bits and pieces since xmas and I was having a bit of a tidy up,
so I put the rear wheel back on with the idea of rolling down the hill to stick it in the shed, of course I then turned on the gas kicked it in the guts and away it went !! After a quiet little putter around (no front brake) I was so impressed with it I decided to let it into the basement to be with the other bikes.
However later on I noticed it was crying tears of fuel even though the gas was turned off, so I let it go outside again.... it then stopped crying and looked kindof lonely but happy. I think it was pineing for the outdoors.
Anyway I turned on the pooter and lo and behold nordie had just posted a pic of said Zombie bike on buggs's thread :eek5:
Uncanny aye.

About the Zombie Bike
.................................................. .
Uncanny aye.

Yeah... I had a bit of a tear in my eye when I saw the pick :sniff:
It's astounding that you can leave it outside for months on end and it'll fire up pretty much straight away. Good bike that one

Congrats Padders :sunny:

I have no idea where you were or what you did, but you look pretty stoked in the pic.

It's the steep one where we waited at the base for piglet when he wimped out coming down to the intersection/skid site and got stuck that day.

The one that everybody else seems to get up:facepalm: Woodman knows it cos I launched the KLX over one of the tank traps without me on it:shit: The forest is bloody boney at the mo. alot of new roads cut in around Thomas rd where they're logging.

Well done that man. What was your technique?

Took the tractor for a ride over Porika and Braeburn and back this arvo and then went through the Dryweather road on the way home this.

The dryweather road has either been covered with 5 feet of grey marbles, the klr needs serious suspension work or I was riding like a looney, or a combination of all three cos it was a bit hairy in places.

Anyone up for a ride on Saturday morning? First time I have some riding time in for ages. Thinking Hori Bay, as I've done very little exploring out that way off piste.

Sounds good to me.

Too damp and the knobblies will be going on though...
