That BMW with the ape hangers?

246516

apparently the owner's quite a good barstard (& big) so I'll reserve judgement. It's got fuelling issues...

Seen the 2 scooters they have in the back (well amongst the hundreds i spose) One is actually broken in half from a big Russian fisherman - as in only the flexible plastic foot mat is holding it together.

The other one the owner rode it in sfter hitting a car - one fork was competely broken off the triple clamp - it could turn reslly well one way...

:scooter:

I rode the Maungatapu every evening for 2 weeks leading up to the last one.
Ended up where I could do the whole trip over to Heringa Stream and back without sitting down.

It worked.
I didn't get lapped until at least 1km into the 1st lap.

If it's back out at Lamb valley it'll be at least softer to land on than the forest or maunga. Lot of steep grassy/ dry clay downhills I expect.
I'm looking forward to it.
might need a few supporters to dress really provocatively & prance around... anyone here had any experience dressing up like a ladyboy??? Anyone???

Okay, any of you guys have some ideas on how to seal up the fuel taps on my Safari tank? The gaskets they supplied for the taps lasted 3 days before they disintegrated. Have tried PTFE and then paper + loctite 518, both have not done the trick. Can't find anyone that can sell me viton sheet that i can cut to shape, running out of options here and the standard tank range is rubbish on my XR

o-ring?

Gasket maker left to cure for a few hours before doing up?

madmartin
10th September 2011, 12:09
they have an o-ring that seals to an alloy plate, which then seals against the crude oblong hole in the tank with a gasket, the gasket seems to be the bit that's failing. The last attempt was left 2 hours to set (loctite say's half an hour is adequate). Seems a hell of a lot of trouble to go to just to get the range for the molesworth run. Kinda tempted to put the stocker back on it. At least that kept the petrol on the inside!

Anyone up for a ride on Saturday morning? First time I have some riding time in for ages. Thinking Hori Bay, as I've done very little exploring out that way off piste.Well I couldn't do today either due to family illness, so I'm keen for tomorrow.

had only 2.5 litres left in it after the rainbow rd... maybe the consistant 150kph had something to do with that...

on the plus side, round the bobs fern loop and leaks seem to have stopped... for now

I wouldn't take my KLR around it myself - it's the long momentum gathering downhills that would scare the crap out of me, & the off camber bits. Uphills wouldn't be a problem - I reckon they climb as well as a small bike.

Yeah judging only by the bits i've ridden on the laid back I reckon you'd smoke a few lil sideway cap wearing, jeans down to their ankles mx wannabes:yes:

Only just noticed you myself. Been doing an economy run in the car the last fortnight and was concentrating on driving economically. Finished today and got 800kms for 57 litres of fuel, which is about the same as the KLR riding hard but not nearly as much fun.

Hey I think I'm turning into a DR rider cos I just downloaded Adeles album & strangely really like it...

Do you think a 90s pink colour scheme will suit me now?

I'm working on getting away on Sunday avo for a hardcore crossdressing ride all pissed up (or however WW says it) gotta do a bit more guilting before I can confirm if anyones keen. Gonna concentrate on
1. Wheelies
2. Going up hills
3 Coming down hills
4. Not coming off (yeah ok even I can't take myself seriously with that one)
5. Riding & not stopping every 3 1/2 mins to talk about fuel consumption & tyre pressures:facepalm:
6. Wheelies for real this time

So you think you're kinda semi hard core-ish to tag along & watch how my strict 6hr training schedule ( & listening to Adele) has turned me into a clay slinging Gid

Hira or go all Erzberg and take the pruning saws up Mt Duppa?

Drop into the top of the Lost Highway and work our way around to the exit at the other end. No clay really but a good test of standing endurance and rough ground bike handling skillz.

I'd really like to maximise my time by riding & not exploring / lifting bikes for the next few weeks. I'm keen to just do a few laps around the familiar stuff in the Forest or Hori.
Although it may be a bit boring I always find places to challenge myself & the longer I ride without stops, the more comfortable I get, worry less & confidence grows.
It would be cool to have a ride around that MX track up The Glen & get used to off camber grass & stuff.

Anyway what do you reckon.

Hori Bay.
All the side roads on the way in. The normalish route.
Get to the ends and turn around and back down. Keep trucking along. We know the terrain and it then becomes an endurance ride.
A nice hill climb to do a few times, good rain ruts and no other traffic to worry about.

I want to pay the money before really getting back into Hira and replicating NordieBro's cross country loop as a good training circuit.

Bonus with Hori Bay is it's got good grip even when wet.

Good ride today. Plenty of off road & shennanigans.
We lost Nordie early on when he went down the slippery slope of despair that Woodman & I had walked halfway down the other weekend & decided there was no way up if it didn't come out onto a road. We think he's ok but will send out a pizza if he's not back in a few days.

Woodman & Colin made the hill of impossibility look easy to climb:angry:
Piglet cruised effortlessly & smoothly down the steep downhill that Nordie walks down & I nearly frontended over today. Obviously inherits his mother's riding skills:innocent: well done that lil snouted freak.

I knew where the Slippery Slope of Despair ended up so thought I'd give it a go.

It went somewhere else entirely...
About a km to the east of where I thought...

But it seems to have potential...
Better for a dry day through.

I got to about 50m of the top and traction gave out.
The next time I got to within 80m...

Walked to the top. Not something I'd like to repeat anytime soon.

Walked back down to turn the camera off...

The next attempt was 100m from the top...

10psi and got to the top!

Go the mighty 705's!

Although to be fair, any blockish tyre would have been better.

The Hill of Impossibility was dealt with at less than walking pace and surprised the hell out of me as I was expecting to lose traction at any time...

Great day! :D

Was looking at the footage going up the Whangamoa's, chasing the 690 and 990 and with the camera mounted on the front guard, got a little carsick...

Need to get some more curved gopro mounts for the new helmet. Although the pov from the front guard was good, there's a bit much vibration and things like the ditches across Steep Rd look like 20cm deep grooves...

I saw the chopper leaving the hospital & grimaced as I always do when I see it - it's never there for a happy occasion.
I had just passed a car vs car accident a few minutes before so thought maybe it was from that.

Here's hoping for a successful recovery.

Trying, trying......struggling ...... not working.........:shit:
Try change the extension to .MPG or .MPEG if changing it to .AVI doesn't work.
.MOD is often a version of the mpeg formats.
It is possible you will loose the aspect ratio though so in order to get it to work properly you may have to actually repackage it with a conversion program.

Well last night I decided that i would go for a wee ride today to see what had happened to my old stamping ground from 20 mumble mumble years ago.

Anyway left home in the dark abouty 6.30am and headed for Murchison via the Porika etc. found out I had a passenger when stopped on the Porika. (photo) On the braeburn the tractor started handling oddly, It felt like a flat tyre but wasn't but when I stopped in Murch for some fruit snacks my inspection revealed oil round the rear shocky. Ah well it wasn't handling too bad so headed up the matikatikatikati and over the maruia saddle.(photo) Lovely ride, rainng but lovely. Got to reefton half frozen and a little wet, gassed up (18 litres) and had a pie and coffee at that cool bike friendly cafe.(photo)

part 2.

headed out of Reefton and turned off at ikamatua and headed up what used to be a tight twisty back road,( but now is like a main highway ) to Blackball and got the obligatry shot outside the Hilton. Blackball has not changed at all, so after a circuit headed for Stillwater and turned towards Moana, looking for Mmaori Creek(or Gully) road. Found it so turned off and yay it was gravel and twisty. i was looking to get to Dunganville, which seemes to have disapeared but there were a few things familiar and a lot of the old backroads are sealed. Came out at the end or Rutherglen road and headed up the Noname road. Its still good and rough and the sign says no exit. Its a bit like BIg River and eventually comes out at an intersection. Went through the intersection onto a really cool track which I reckon is Cockeye creek, which was the scene of my one and only Enduro 25 odd years ago.
Photos to follow, heading to the shop for an ice block

Cockeye creek, if it was indeed Cockeye creek was friggen awesome. Just as I was crossing a creek and thinking that WestCoast creeks are good for crossing because the rockes aren't slippery, my front wheel slipped on slippery rocks:innocent: and down we went. Fortunately the creek wasn't that deep, but when I went to move off again I had no drive and just a weird whirring noise. Oh bother I said, but it was just that the chain had come off somehow. Eventually the alleged Cockeye creek track turned into a actual creek, albeit rideableish, but at that stage i got mindful that I was on my own and a long way from home so turned back to the Noname intersection and followed some gravel roads and came out at Camerons. could have gone on to Kumara but was getting tired and hungry, so headed into Greymouth to catch up with a mate and have a feed and gas up for home.

My mate was out of town so headed to maccas for a feed, gassed up, went for a tike tour around Greymouth and headed home.

Bugger I thought, no more cool tracks. Seal all the way home:angry: Its just not fair having to ride that mindnumbingly boring Coast road and then have to endure the Buller Gorge road on top of that:innocent:

No photos cos i was having such a blast.:woohoo::woohoo: Thats gotta be the best road ride in Unzud? Almost makes me wanna get a roadbike again. Best thing was that there was almost no traffic, just about had a clear run right through to Murchison. Got home about 5 only to find that i was locked outta the house cos Mrs Woodman had my car(and house keys).

Great ride, sore Ass, (720 kays),bike ran like a dream, and there is a lot of exploring to be done that way yet. Couple of days should do it.

Dunno, but there is a offroad scooter ride from Marlborough to the West Coast coming up.

I actually inquired about this, looks like a good laugh, but as it is a "fundraiser" event, cheapest entry fee was $265 do yer own food, or $750 catered, prolly a bit steep for most scooter riders.
They are doing Picton -Havelock -Mangatapu - Nelson - Motueka -Tapawera - Sherry Dry Weather Rd - Kawatiri - Porika -Braeburn- Murchison- and dare I say it- New Creek to Denniston- Westport - Greymouth. They will have some fun on the new Creek- Denniston hill, it was bad enough getting up that on the EXC!
Pretty extreme for scoots but that's half the fun. I'd say there will be some suspension breakages given the terrain, and the average scoot road tires could be errr, interesting.

Oh and a small mx/enduro track in the woods, rocks, rivers. Was beginning to wonder if I was going to find a way out...
A nice little 3hr pootle. Next time I'm taking the chainsaw. The pruning saw and shovel got a good workout but some things call for more brutality...

I'm doing some long-ish night-ish tarseal rides to get some seat time prior to the 1000 miler and Long Weekend Rally. If anyone is keen for some evening pootles in the next few weeks, let me know. eg popped over to Takaka last night, roads and skies were clear from SE of Mot, was quite a nice ride, yet Meri says there was hail in town!! Other likely destinations are a loop Havelock-Picton-Blenheim-home, maybe around the block (Wairau valley) and Murch/Westport return.

Jen is keen to host a shed night since she is getting cabin fever! Wed this week is good for me, and yep I'm keen for someone to bring a welder and skillz. I managed to snap the weld on one of my tyre levers while removing an aged tyre - it took three of us to get the thing off :shit: Now wondering if I should buy a ring/open 27mm and cross-breed it with a tyre lever, to replace the dodgy 27mm from the OEM toolkit - or if I should/could strengthen the OEM one.

btw Topo, did you have a KDX200 rat bike? I think I've found it.

I can drop it round to your place or you can pick it up if you want to have a play.

Nice and sturdy without being quite as heavy as a normal ring/open spanner. "Pro" tyre lever tip looks a lot flasher than my old skool cast levers.

Tom sturgess will be opening his bike collection as a museum where you can have a ride on some bikes. :wings:
Over the last few weeks I have seen an old T100 with a dealer plate on ride from town to our place then back to town , then a BSA, but when a Vincent went past with the same plate it finally clicked whose they were.

Hopefully the museum isn't all modern glass & stainless but period looking with oil stained wooden floors & old oil company signs hanging around.

Sounds good. Still tossing up DR vs TT though.
Haven't done those tracks on the TT yet so may just put the road wheels back on and give it a go.

NordieBoy
22nd October 2011, 17:20
Went for a short blat on the TT up Hurricane Hill where the rear knobbly did the same in the damp as it did in the dry and decided traction was for wimps and not exciting at all, round Maitai Face where there's a decent line now, down to Linton Hill and then decided "what the hell" and went up the firebreak, all the way to the top, on the same tyres that are useless on anything hard pack with a loose covering.
I think I'll leave them on for tomorrow as I don't care if I knacker the rear and once it is shot, I can put the MT43 on.

I think that on average, I'd have had more traction from the 705 rear. But the knobbly front was a must for the downhills.

Maybe an "emo" tyre setup, long front, short back as opposed to the "mullet" with a roady front and knobbly rear.

320km for me today.

A couple of bits I hadn't been on before and managed to find the tracks linking Glenhope to Kinzett Creek.

Oh and Mr Forestry man, on Sunday Creek Road, the sign says closed Mon - Fri. That would seem to indicate that it's open on weekends. Open does not count dumping a pile of gravel on the road, making it impassable and forcing traffic through a skid site that's got a locked gate...

Sheesh, you've only just found those, you gotta get out more, lol

I did 230km on Friday on the scoot with the ScooterSurvivor crew :scooter:, and came home over the Glenhope, Elvys Rd and Cains Rd, which links up over by Kinzett creek. All done on road tyres, 25km per litre, fuel range around 200km, and ave speed was around 70kmph on seal, 40kmph on gravel. Could've done with better front shocks, my back took a hammerin over some of the potholes, but good for a laugh anyways.:weird:

Well I managed to get some bike time in at the weekend, too. Full service including valve clearances - I've done it often enough it seems simple and effortless. Swapped on the MT90 A/T roadie front tyre, swapped on the correct front disc, picked up the newly-straightened rear rim with fresh MT90 A/T rubber. Have been busy re-installing all the road gear: pillion pegs (cheers Jatz), footpeg rubbers (may get biffed if it rains), rear rack, Givi plate on the rack, tank bag. Cheers Topo for welding up a few bits'n'pieces for me, yes Padmei I will probably grab your woodman-welder and start doing some meself. Fixed one wiring fault in my headlight modification.

Had a wee ride 'around the block' on Sunday night: Nelson - Picton - Renwick - St Arnaud - Kawatiri Junction - Tapawera - Motueka - Nelson. 415km, got home at 1:30am :D. No rain, just enough to blur the visor occasionally.

Fixed a second and the main wiring fault with the headlight mods Monday night... NOW the bloody low beam stays on with high beam, without flickering. :woohoo: Still doesn't matter how much forward lighting you have, need to have an mtb-style helmet-mounted light to illuminate where you want to go, rather than where you are currently headed as most headlights do. Unfortunately the HID I was intending to run is too bulky - or at least, the igniter and transformer are - to affix to the helmet. May possibly be able to fit them in the top of a backpack, but I think waiting until I'm richer and getting an LED light will be a better bet.

Picked up the repaired alloy bash plate today, they did a good job for not much money. Decided not to reinforce it lest it expose the bolt heads or interfere with the damping rubbers.

So I'm primed and ready for the Long Weekend Rally and Grand Challenge... 3500km in 5 days :2thumbsup or should that be :stupid: or :weird:??

Old one went tits up a while back, old owners stripped what they could out of it, then it sat empty and derelict for a couple of years before a couple took it over and turned it into a cafe.Very nice it is too, seems to be a popular spot when doing the loop, Nelson, Mot vly, U/Mout...

Went for a wee roady ride this arvo, well except for a wee hoon by the Mot river.

Coming home from Mot I was in a line of traffic when the driver of a campervan decided all of a sudden that she wanted an apple from that Broken Hill fruit stall on that s bend that I,ve always thought dangerous. Anyway i was unaware of all this until i saw brakelights and tyre smoke and cars on weird angles in front of me. Anyway I managed to brake, and lock the back up:facepalm: so as I slid sideways towards the back of one of the sideways cars we both ended up on the wrong side of the road. Fortunately I managed to miss hitting the sideways car by fuck all, but when I looked up there were 2 cars coming round the corner and were on a collision course for me and the sideways car. Somehow managed to get off the back brake and change direction enough to avoid them, needless to say if i was riding an airhead their would have been rocker cover contact on both sides:shit:. Anyway i stopped on the side of the road and watched the following cars passengers and drivers horrified expressions at what could have been. the driver of the camper got out and had an utter look of horror on her face that it was of no use me telling her what she had done wrong so i waved and rode home oddly in a very calm state.

Really didn't need that.

I rode home past the Richmond lites wedge of death today & saw a cop car flashing lites.
There was a car to the side of the wedge that had run into a long brushwood fence:shit: I couldn't for the life of me remember seeing a fence like that on the side of the motorway. we're talking right on the shoulder of it.
Now I still truly can't believe what I saw - the front of the car was stoved in like it had hit a lamppost & there was a fence post IMPALED into the bonnet:gob: half of the post was now in the engine bay while the rest of it was actually sticking out of the bonnet horizontally. the post was attached to the rest of the fence

I had to look about 5 times to reassure myself I'd seen things correctly.
weird.

I had to look about 5 times to reassure myself I'd seen things correctly.
weird.

What time did you go past?
It was still there about 4:30.

That was all I got. Didn't turn my head enough to see the front.

NordieBro heard 4 bikes go past when he was hunting between Spooners and Dove Hill.

1 was really noisy.

Slow/noisy would be me.
Fast/noisy would be the Pom.

He also thinks that Nuggety Creek does go over private land at one point.

saw that car in the accident today on the car transporter - had a nice square hole in the bonnet.
In the paper tonite there was a fair bit of carnage in the forests over the weekend - 18yrold girl over a 7 metre bank choppered out & a collision in Orinocco forest. Not a good look for other forest users.

Went over to Pelorus for a late breakfast this morning.

The Maungatapu has a nice flow to it at the moment.
Not too rough, you can keep your speed up and really enjoy it.

Heringa stream is passable and the wild pork, kumera and apple pie was quite nice.
The flat white didn't even taste burnt this time!

Linton Hill is also doable on a TT350 with road tyres :scooter:
Going down Hurricane Hill is freakier though. The rain ruts are a right bugger.

I think the next farkle for the TT will be a braided brake line. You can easily feel the line expand when you pull the lever in. It's a bit too soft for my liking...

I think you struck the best weather. Schmiddty is laid up with a leaking battery so I will take the opportunity to do a few more bits that require it to be off the road.

If I really feel the need I may take the klx out for a quick one tomm avo.

Just fitted a braided line and new pads to mine from procycle. haven't been far but the brake seems better, albeit a bit wooden and requires quite a bit of hand pressure , but the lever doesn't reach the grip now so thats gotta be good. Will give it a decent test soon, and maybe let one of the nads see what its like once the pads are properly bedded in.

Yeah, the braided line puts all the effort from your hand straight down to the pads.
No squishyness but slightly wooden.

I woodn't go back though.

Had a hell of a time bleeding the DR master cylinder on the TT. There's still a shitload of air in there...

Have any of you guys heard of these: Goodridge speed bleeders?

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/4/22/434/6597/ITEM/Goodridge-Speed-Bleeders.aspx

I recently got some from the USA, around $25NZ a pair for my KTM.
They replace the stock bleed nipple and have a non return valve in them, so they bleed fluid out but don't let air back into the brake lines. It took me about 2 mins to bleed my brakes once installed, just crack the nipple, pump the brake lever and fill reservior with fresh fluid.
Too easy!

That's quite cool.

I've been using these for 6 years or so now.

I've been using these for 6 years or so now.I'm old school...just do it by hand with a looped hose line, but granted it's quite a stretch on the 640. All that fancy stuff might be faster and cooler, but there's always another priority for my money. Tools for jobs I can't yet do, or do often, get priority over something like this that is only done occasionally and can be done with the tools I've already got.

Would love to have a fully blinged-out pro workshop though! :headbang:

I've heard of morons deliberately doing a bad bleed job on braided lines in order to give some squish at the lever to emulate the crappy rubber hoses they're used to!

A couple of tricks to get that list bit of air out: 1) cable tie the brake on overnight 2) hang the master cylinder up so it is the highest point in the line. The latter works especially well with dirt bikes when the brake line at rest loops up above the master.

If you go into Mt Duppa via the top of the Forgotten Highway, you can't get out again without quite a bit of effort :apumpin::weird:

Weird thing about brake bleeding.

Ever since I have had the klr the front has been almost impossible to bleed, took friggen ages, just drove me nuts every time .

Put the braided line on the other day and it bled up straight away.

weird,

I would like to announce that Scout Rd is now easily doable east to west on road tyres and doable west to east :niceone:

There are no more trees across the track

Also, drop down the track to the north of Mt Everest and a couple of corners later there's a cool ridgeline track that goes up to the right. Couldn't get any purchase with the 705's on the loose deep grit surface. Bulldogging back down and I was sliding beside the bike. Was going to have another go but got a phone call half way down, as you do. Jenni had locked herself out and I had the key

where's Scout rd Nordie?

In Hira. It joins Central Rd and Teal Valley Rd's via a rocky, slippery, clay track at the Central Rd end and then through a creek (road washed out) and onto the overgrown, fallen tree side to Teal Valley Rd.
