Camera's in the hira:eek: bloody worlds gone mad...:Police:
In the mid 80s.. it was known around Nelson.. If
yer wanted to go for a ride... every sat morning
meet at the hira car park at 10am... some days
there could be 15+ bikes turn up.. 8/10 the norm..

Central, Sharlands and Top Rd? are public easements and I strenuously object to paying to be on them.
I'm going to pay though. It's easier to fight from the inside.

Katie and i have gone to the trouble (easy as) of getting the permit to ride in the hira, moutere and waimea forest areas. to be honest i think that they should be cracking down on the muppets who keep getting in trouble and causing issues, i think "we" adv type guys who think we can ride anywhere we want need to take a serious look occasionally at where we are going and how others see what we get up to.

We can't even keep the mungatapu track open propperly at the moment so why push the boundrys in the forestry areas given there is propper access being allowed without having to jump through too many hoops.

I do however agree with Nordie regarding all the publc easments and legal roads especially in the Hira.

Guys, please don't f**k up the access we still have!

I will be in the "top-of-the-south" for a few days after Christmas and I would be grateful for suggestions of rides in the area.

I will be doing the Molesworth and Rainbow (28th & 29th) so looking for places to ride after that until my return ferry on the 2nd Jan.
I have seen very little of the gravel in that part of NZ. I have done the Maungatapu track once .....be curious to do it again, but I'm not sure I would do it on my own. I have been consulting my maps and have some ideas, but thought i would sound out the locals too.

So...suggestions of where to ride (and where not to try and take my XT), and where to park up at the end of the day for a beer etc:drinknsin....would be most welcome. Oh, and I would of course, like to meet some of you guys and gals if you are around so offers of local tour-guiding will be gratefully received.

cheers

Hey Nic.
There will prob be a Nads ride when you're here. I'll be staying around for xmas & will be keen to do Molesworth & Rainbow as soon as it opens - prob in one day though.
Other cool places are Braeburn track, & can't remember the the other one that comes out at frog flat but is one of my favourites. Maruia Saddle?

Hori bay & over the hill to Takaka are awesome rides as is Port Underwood road from picton to Blenheim.
Hell even the tarseal is great around here...
Stay tuned & we'll see who's around then & where to go.

Ever tried beach racing Nic? Once bitten...

Went over the bay again today - awesome- warm, sunny, uncrowded.
Went for a MTB tonite so pretty wheeled out.
Good nite for it. many other tyre tracks thru there lately? I thought they were closing the road for roadworks?

Me thinks it's closed from Monday 21st onwards.
Looks like it will be option B for the next 6 months or so, Sharlands then Teal saddle to caretakers hill/gate.

NordieBoy
17th November 2011, 20:06
They've started putting fluro sprayed marker posts on the side of the road...
Knackered trials tyres have got some amazing grip but fcuk me, a new one is on another level entirely.

It's got a whole 3mm of clearance to the shock bolt and swingarm and that's with going to a smaller front sprocket...

14f/12r psi.

Maungatapu to the summit with all the side tracks and even riding the water ditch down from the corkscrew just for the hell of it and the tyre just gripped and drove. Climbing out of ditches - no problem...

Linton Hill - just for the hell of it - up and down... Bloody smooth grip... Wow...

But it's cheating. There's no effort or skill involved. Just point and shoot.

Aim it at something gnarly and it just says "Yeah, I can do that" and yawns when you get to the top. The Shinko 705's however say "Oh shit!, Not again!" and "Well fcuk me!" when you get to the top.

I prefer the 705's...

Kinda, was doing a couple of expo evenings in Blenheim and Nelson, but managed to get back to Mot for half a day between shows, and had to pick up my regassed rear shock, although they reckon it won't last, but it did have pressure in it before so we'll see.

Will have the bike back together tomorrow, and just traced my new rear hubs progress and it went through customs yesterday so hopefully it may arrive today, hopefully.

Hi Jeff is your coffeehouse open on Friday? If yes how do we (2) find it.

Is the Matai Valley Rd open yet or is there another way to access the Maungatpu track? If no, should we transit thru Sharlands Rd?

After French Pass what's the closest fuel heading to Picton?

Sorry about the list of questions.

yer can get out to Raetihi , just after St Omar theres a road that goes over the top
to Crail bay... the prob is theres not a lot of signage.... If yer get as far as the portage
you have missed the turn off... Now from memmory.. the turn of is just as yer leave
the coast & go over the top to the other coast the Portage is on...i think/maybe..

The route was across the Taupo-Napier Rd, anticlockwise around East Cape, Eketahuna via some back roads, Vinegar Hill, Fields Track, Rangipo. Unsurprisingly the very rough East Cape unsettled quite a few bikes (riders), including some adventure bikes, but the 640 took it all in it's stride, never lost its composure once. There was at least one KLR on the run, too.

However I have found the limit of road-riding the 640A on the standard seat: it's somewhere before 3400km in 4 days  But I'm not sure I can blame the bike as I have done bugger-all road riding in the last couple of years. I did as many kays in a week as I did in the previous 2.5 years...

From another thread:

Well it's taken until today (thurs) for me to be able to sit without a little discomfort. :gob: That last hour in to Wellington on Sunday arvo was the most painful I've ever done :crybaby: but I suppose after 3400 km in 4 days on the KTM 640 Vibramatic it's understandable. [Edit: And now I've been at the puter for an hour tonight, I've got a sore butt again... Jurassic Butt aka Megasaurus!]

We had it pretty easy this year. For the main event I never put on my over-gloves, nor my final thermal layer: inner gloves, inner socks, legs and top. Bugger all straight roads, bugger all traffic, bugger all nasty weather. Although the fog over every climb at night (and notably the Paihiatua Track) made things interesting. The frequent damp roads kept you on the ball, especially at night, but rain itself was infrequent. Lotsa misty stuff that raised the humidity enough to fog my closed visor, but popping it open cleared it.

I've done a handful of GCs on the 640 previously, but the addition of the 900km pushed things over the limit, as far as my arse is concerned. Plus the run to Wellywood is a bit too straight for comfort even via Vinegar Hill. Having said that, I've not done much road riding in the last couple of years, and very little this last 12 months. Most of my riding time has been off-road, and that's only been about 1 day per month. I've spent the last month steadily converting the 640 back to road trim.

An awesome ride, as usual. :woohoo:

Some numbers for you, these are for the 3550 km trip ex-Nelson, not including 650 km of practice runs:

Fuel: $367, avg 4.7 L/100km = max 542 km/tank
Tyres: $111, 30% of a set
Chains/sprockets: $85, 30% of a set
Oil/Filters: $67, 70% of a service

All this adds up to about $17.80 / 100km in expenses, and another service will be due before the Dusty Butt 1000 in January.

Bring it on...

Fuji AV100:
12mp
3x Optical Zoom
Buttons on back
AA batteries

251809

Canon Powershot A3000IS:
10Mp
4x Optical Zoom
Buttons on back and dial on top
Lithium battery
$120

Same size LCD on both.

Both photos were on full auto. The Fuji one was a bit darker as there was slightly more white in the centre of the frame.

I prefer using the Canon with the dial...

Thanks Nordie but I've got the Fuji one - I went into Dick smith ready to spend $3-400 on a 'good' camera & somehow the shop assistant talked me into buying the cheap runout fuji model for $90

I'll leave the camera thing till after xmas with all its additional expenses.

Just a word of warning- all those in front of me look out when cornering as I may be inclined to overshoot the cones by about, oh lets say 100m or so.

I like cameras with AA batteries...spare batteries no problem...I bought a Panasonic Lumix FT-10 and cheap 3.party batteries aren't usable because Panasonic uses software in their cameras that prevent any other batteries but Panasonic being used...and a spare Panasonic battery is $100:shit:

I had to make my own on the road charger up out of the original charger using 4 (rechargeable) AA batteries...10-15 min. from empty to 3 quarters full (not optimal...easy to overcharge battery)

No one fell off!

Almost everyone got up the Maungatapu Summit bank!

Everyone? got up Linton Hill! And some Down!

There's been a dozer down Linton Hill and the rocks in the middle are easier than before and there's a little dirt coverage which helps.

One little rock fall going up to Horse Bridge, one bit of tree down near the head of the dam, some nasty looking cracks in the track that may make it 1/2 a lane when they let go, otherwise the Maungatapu is in pretty mint condition.

Heringa Stream was even doable. Sort of.
The base of the stream was a bit lacking in traction. The base of the climb wasn't.
Nearly looped it and then there wasn't enough traction to get going again. That was the only part of the ride where knobs would have made a difference.

Actually that's mighty tempting. We are at the mo making plans to come to Welly for a couple of days around the 4-6th. We could extend it maybe.
Even if that doesn't work i'd love to catch up for a coffee with the Welly airhead group & look at / ride (only around the block) a couple of similar bikes to compare a few things.
We'll talk later.

Hi Everyone,

there are four of us leaving Christchurch on Boxing Day with plans to be in Mouteka on 30 Dec and hopefully ride the Maungatapu to Poloris on 31 Jan (We are flexible about the time of day). We had this advice on the Mangatapu thread;

"I would suggest if anyone is wanting to ride the Maungatapu but are now unsure of how to get there from Nelson they post up here or in the Nelson rideouts thread & someone could volunteer to guide them thru the forest roads around the closed portion of the Maitai road."

We will be offline from tomorrow so woujld really appreciate any help and a phone contact. My cell is 021 043 7447

thanks

Ken

I'm doing Molesworth/ Rainbow/ home on the 28th of Dec. I'll be taking Schmidtty so I won't be doing Altimarloch or anything tricky - just plain non stop riding as a shakedown ride for the Dusty buttocks.

There hopefully won't be any maintenance stops however I will take some extra bolts & loctite.

I plan on leaving early, going via taylors Dam only really stopping in Hanmer for a coffee, gas & sweet thing then straight back.

If you're interested in hanging out let me know.

Its ok apparently, I do it quite often alone and its fine as long as you don't go too far off the beaten track and get stuck in a bog hole:facepalm:

Disclaimer. You should always ride in groups for safety reasons.

I did the porika last weekend, it's a little washed out but nothing out of the ordinary. i wouldn't do it 2up on a beemer at the moment but that may have changed if a few 4wd's have gone through moving the loose stuff out of the way.
The Braeburn road is in perfect condition but the ford are slipperier than usual. Maruia saddle is in perfect condition also:2thumbsup

Should be up for this. The DR needs a good shakedown ride before the DB too.
May load it up with all the camping gear and backpack too to see how it handles it.

And if your stand gets a bit too much dirt in it, when you go into a nice dip, the stand will drop slightly and with the friction from the dirt, will stay down...

Good meeting u guys today, seems there was a few virgins on the Molesworth.

Good to meet you guys too.

The Rainbow has some nice deep soft gravel, big pot holes nearer the end and some washboards.

All of our bikes had "issues"...

Woody blew a brake side fork seal, and his air filter was a bit dirty and would hardly pull up some of the climbs. Blackberry Powerade seems to work instead of filter oil though.

Pete's rear brake caliper has munted his new pipe. More travel than expected.

I hit a rock with my right footpeg mount and sheared off the rear bolt and the paint has chipped off around that part of the frame, so that's tweaked.

Padmei's battery fell down onto the rear wheel. At speed...

Oh and after taking off from Padmei's place, how long do you think it took for the first 10min stop for repairs? Bonus points if you name the rider of the BMW.

Actually I personally found the Rainbow diabolical. The gravel in places was riding on a slushy - I thought both my tyres were flat. The pot holes at the end were deep & caught ya unexpectedly. would have to say it's the worst i've seen it.
All the slips & fords were in good condition & easy to cross
. I have to admit I was rding like a clown today tho till I put my ipod on & got into the groove with some music. Shame I lost my ipod somewhere around golden downs:facepalm:

Yes a good day indeed, buggered now tho.

Good to meet Shewolf and cohorts, and the rainbow is ok, but like the Panza division says it aint that pleasant, but still good really.

Never had an air filter clog up that bad that it stops the bike from running, but I spose it means its catching the dust and is sealing proper. The bike started running bad again just after Tophouse road so it was a jerky ride home, but we got there.

Thanks guys it was fun. Pics to follow when recovered.

We'll take a rain cheque on the guide to the Caretakers place if that's ok

Got chased back to Christchurch by the weather. Did however enjoy the Rainbow, the Pokira and Braeburn tracks in both directions, New Creek to Denniston (even found a challenge loop), Maruia Saddle, West Bank Road, and the Napoleon Hill track out of Reefton.

We hope to have another go at making it to Nelson after the DB1K.

Thanks for the offers of help

Ken

What's up with Napoleon Hill?

It's been destroyed by a dozer was the last thing I heard?

No problems going in, but the section in the river was a bit of work as there must have been recent flooding. Plus we had a DR with us that decided it wanted to be a submarine!

Which direction did you go?

From the Ahura end, there was a really steep downhill that was a bit impossible going the other way if wet.

I feel the need for some wet riding tomorrow.
Probably Hori Bay and have a look up all the side roads on the way in...

I would, but.......

Seeing as how I missed out the other day, I was planing on giving "the loop" a nudge tomorrow with a detour up Altimarloch. All this rain should make it interesting :2thumbsup
