I may have to ride out towards Elaine Bay to look at a mates fricking hw cylinder. (I just know they've flicked the circuitbreaker the wrong way - up is on & down is off). Got nippers in the morning too.
Don't watch any bloody dakars before you go;)

Good to meet you guys too.
The Rainbow has some nice deep soft gravel, big pot holes nearer the end and some washboards.
All of our bikes had "issues"...
Pete's rear brake caliper has munted his new pipe. More travel than expected.
And snaped both front mounts on the top box plate..
I have no idea how/why it stayed on...
The first time I have used it...O well they still make bolts...

Found some cool new (to me) tracks in Hira too.
The track that goes around to the left of your nemesis hill climb has been cleared and winds along through tree ferns and water coursing down the track, to the west side of the base of Mt Everest.
The exit out to the car-park (where you fell off) has been washed out and I did a bit of stonework so I could ride over the boulders...
Great fun today.
My back is killing me :D

I went for a cruise over the whangas today & in a fit of benevolence turned off to Hori bay to do a reconnaisance. The is a smallish washout along the entry road in. The hill of impossiblity looks like it has a horific tank trap cut across it above the left hand turn off. The rest of the road is ok apart from a few horible slips.
Unfortunately the road descending into the bay was impassible due to a horindous mudslide complete with trees. The mud was still deep & wet so I turned around & beetled out.
More bikes coming in. I'm getting really excited about the Port races:drool:

I am busy today so won,t be riding. Taking Mrs Woodman to the supercross.
Had the klr all clean and ready for the db and decided yesterday to go for a 20 minute ride round the block to make sure I had fixed the problem from the molesworth ride. Wasn't even going to go on gravel. anyway i was riding along on a gravel road beside the applebl river and took a wee excursion over a dried up settling pond thing that looked hard enough to support 300kg of bike and rider. It was fine but I ended up in a crushing plant and the only way out was from whenct I came.
No problems you are thinking as long as he follows his wheel tracks over the hard bit he should be fine. For some reason (brain explosion) I decided to not follow my old wheel tracks and subsequently rapid deceleration occured as the bike sunk up past its axles in thick smelly mud. I got off and also sunk into the mud. By the way I was wearing my going out jeans and favourite sneakers (ATGATT,pah!).
So spent 20 minutes digging my way out and dragging the bike onto solid ground on its side. There must have been 10kg of fetid mud still on the bike (and me) when i got home that it took near an hour to clean it all out.
No pics as I was only going round the block.

Great day out!! :Punk: (even though I was riding like a nana....) Gotta get back on the gravel more often me thinks!! ;) Thanks heaps to Craig - for the bike, & to Colin & John - for picking said bike up outta the ford :not: (which was a damn site deeper/wider/swifter/slippery'er than it actually looks in the photo too BTW!!!! :bleh:) Had forgotten what a climb it is up to the Mt Arthur road!! (Would be 2 1/2 years since I was up there with the JATZ's last time). Tis a gorgeous ride down the Westbank road.. love that bit where the trees make tunnels over the road!!
The Hidden Cafe at Tapawera is very cool.. (complete with a feisty eel in the pond!) & they make a pretty good Mochachino!
The weather held out.. only hit the rain as we came back into Tahuna.. but it sure got cold from there on!! :cold:
Neck was all good!!! :wings: & the workout gave my shoulder/neck/back/arm muscles some needed exercise :apumpin:

January 14, 2012, 6:00 pm
A motorcyclist was airlifted to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition following a crash on the Whangamoa Saddle near Nelson today.
The accident happened about 3.30pm near the summit of the Whangamoas when the 56 year-old male rider collided with a bank.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way, but Police said speed appeared to be a factor.

Very little visibility from the summit, better on the Pelorus side.
Rained getting back up the Wangamoas and all the way back through Hira. Took the long, short cut (cool :Punk:) down Hurricane Hill.
It's more fun going down the short cut than the hill itself!
A good, fun ride and no-one got hurt or fell off.

You don't have to register on a calendar year though, do you? So they very well may have many more than 14 'active' permits?
Did they issue it on the spot? I think I'll wait until I need one before coughing up.

Good call Mr Blen :niceone:
I have a funny story from yesterday...
As I was riding home, going through the lights at Richmond I saw this guy sloping across the road towards Tricky Dickys. I thought... surely he's gunna stop and let me go past... he didn't stop :gob: neither did I  Eventually I locked up the rear and grabbed a handfull of front brake... He still didn't hear me coming  I pulled to a stop right infront of the dropkick, he finally acknowledged I was there when I clocked him in the right ear with the back of my hand, knocking out one of his head phones. Bike ended up on the ground, so I told him exactly what I thought of him and his lack of awareness (lots of bad words) before removing his other head phone for him
Silly buggar stood there watching me getting the bike going, so recomended he vacate the area before I really get stuck into him (more bad words)
Scratched my bar end and clutch lever too :crybaby: and somehow bruised me butt
Anyway.... just thought Id share

Anyhoo I wenty for a civilised pootle out to Moutere, ngatimoti etc.
Sunday creek is now being logged & if you hurry you get the chance like me to ride on a freshly graded perfectly smooth clay road where the existing gravel road was. I recommend a wet day for DR riders.
I took Schmidt off road beside the Moutere hill/ old coach rd bits & loved it. I also did that side bit where Jatz jumped the Big. I have a funny pic trying to get back up onto the road which is on my thread.

No deadheaddd'dd plants but the sleepout was invaded by ants...
The whole day today was spent getting rid of them...
Last time we looked in there was monday evening when we used the microwave to heat some lasagne for the Jatz'z.
Benchtop, cupboards, drawers, jug, 4-way power boards...
They got everywhere.

I was heading back from Blenheim today & heard an awesome roar then a cool red bike went past me from the other way with a dude wearing a helmet with a racing stripe. Looked like he needed a good shit.
You see all the adv bikes in Havelock? Must have been some kind of org tour.
I'm real keen to head out to Anatori next Sat for a play on the green POS. Is anyone else keen? Confirm early or I may get a dose of can't be arsed again. We could maybe try to do a fuel dump somehow if anyone knows anyone going over that way.

Took my cool red bike exploring today, admittedly was planning on just going for a hoon round the sounds on seal only but the lure of an interesting looking side road or two ruined that idea prety quick.
Duppa road was the first and was fun, got up to a telecom shed thing and then came down to SH6 again and then headed up quarry road and did a few excursions up there. Quite a nice loop that.
Headed into Tennyson and explored a few side roads but they all end up at farm sheds, so had to ride seal into Tennyson inlet, that tree in the middle of the road freaks me out every time. Upon leaving Tennyson I turned up Worlds end road and went through a gate to an awesome track albeit moss covered and slippery, pretty sure it follows the power lines but I didn't go too far cos the afore metioned mossy slippery rocky track conditions got the better of me on a steep part and I fell off. Was going to have another go at the hill but discretion overcame valour so i headed out with a promise to go up there again one day when I have a few Nads.
Brilliant ride out except for the tree in the middle of the road, quick feed in Rai and headed back home with a clear run over the Whangamoas= O for awesome.
Home for a steiny, no pics, forgot camera.

Eatwell is cool. Followed Gourmet Rd to the other end , then went up Malcolm's Rd as there was another Malcolm's Rd a km or so earlier. About an hour of being totally lost later, I got to the other end :nya:

I was wondering if that was the one. I don't think the track is ever dry going by how dry the surrounding area is and how wet and slimey the track is. Dunno really, just looking really, but to be honest can't find anything that ticks as many boxes. Note " as many"
Power?, Has enough.
Handling? pretty bad but can still be punted along ok.
Character? shitloads.
Gonna keep it for years I think, its at a stage where its pretty well suited for what we do although the next farkle is a more comfy seat as I am liking longer rides at the moment, and anyway its worth sweet fa.

Depends..... on what sort of bike your riding, and your ability
I think there is a mountain bike race down it, or used to be occasionly. From memory you'd need permission from 3 land owners, The Limeworks at the top, and M.Fry at the bottom, I can't find his ph # just now, But I think he still runs quad treks up there somewhere, have a look up the end of Moss rd, he may be lurking up there and could give you more info. Maybe from Kairuru farm also but I'm unsure on that.
I used to hunt goats/possums/trout up there a bit in my youf.

Along the Hori Bay Rd, before you head up into the hills.
It looks to end at a nice big skid but you can go up to the right through the trees, and up, and up, and along, and up...
Where I stopped, I could look back down along that straight from the Kokorua turn off towards the Rai Saddle.
There may or may not be gorse involved, and Shinko 705's are not advised as there's some short, slow, steep sections with a bit of greenery underfoot that they just spin up on.
I may have made it but 2 goes on my own was enough energy expended and it looked like it headed up to the right off the skid I was trying to get to.
Another of the roads had some rain ruts so deep you could ride up them. But you wouldn't have been able to turn around or get the bike out. They were about 10 feet deep and wide enough, there was not a lot of road left to walk past on.

It is good, isn't it.
Think of gorse as being like marshmallows. Marshmallows made with broken glass. Marshmallows for real bikers.
Got a new, longer chain on the TT today. Means I can run the trials rear without chewing the centre knobs off on the shock protector.
Works too. Went up Sharlands about 8pm and headed up Hurricane Hill and down around the longcut on the gun club side of it. Apart from finding myself in 2nd gear half way up the first short bit and changing down to neutral, there were no issues at all :pinch:

I'm going round the block on sunday (weather dependant) any one wanna join in ? No picture taking or mucking around for discussions on oil or tyres.
I need to get some k's done to get the 6000k service done and finish off the stock tyres
Yes at this stage weather dependant, and the weather isn't looking that promising. Possibly pick a route depending on said weather. Sheepy and nurofens sorted.
Ghey tyre is on, friggen hard work getting a hd tube in there.

I'm heading out to Titirangi Bay on Saturday on Schmidt so won't make the Hori bay ride.

I did remember who has got one though.
Someone who pulled the shock off his TT350 and put a $1200 YSS on.
Sitting on the shock will be a bolt exactly like the one I need.
They can't remember where they put the old shock though
So I re-oiled the shock the easy way and put it back in.

If you turn back towards Lake Moana at the Stillwater turn off you can then turn up maori Gully road and wind your way through forest roads until you come out near Dunganville then head towards the Shantytown road and then turn up the Noname road, then possibly look at Cockeye Creek. If Cockeye creek gets too hard then turn back and follow until you get to cape Terrace Road which will bring you out just near Kumara, then 15 minutes back to Greymouth which the aforementioned roads bypassed.
I think
There are some big signs near Maori Gully road, but dunno what they say cos they are written in an ancient WestCoast dialect (dialogue).

A good ride in Hira. Dropped down into the Gun Club Valley from the east which was a little easier than dropping down from Mt Everest. Less rocks.
2:30 later, back home. Just finished having a shower and Padmei turned up...
We went up to the Teal Lookout over the dam. I "almost" made it up the climb to the east. "Almost" being about 75cm short...
Oh and Padmei fell off.

On the 29th April there is a Laid Back Trail Ride at Lamb Valley. Please note that this is for experienced riders. Kids welcome, but parents will need to ride with your kids and assist when needed. You have been warned!!!!!

At the bottom of Codgers there was a mtb drop called Sphincter. For a while there everybody had to at least have a go at dropping down it. Plan is to do the Lyell to Denniston track on the way down - probably at the iron bridge about mid day on saturday then back up via maruia saddle, braeburn, porika etc on sun arvo - but suggestions welcome!!

That sounds fairly reasonable.
I'd be up for a Sat of that.
There may even be a new muffler and steering damper on the mighty TT by then.

At this stage i may be able to do a Saturday day ride only, and thats only if I can talk(bribe) someone into working. Sunday out at this stage.
The gate was open the other week and we ust pootled on through, but not sure what its status will be on a weekend day.
Fingers crossed

I'd go for that as well cos I can make Iron Bridge by midday from here then scoot back to NN for the night so either is good.
I'd prefer an early run on sun though.... just because it opens up the option of turning back at denniston and doing a run in the other direction with a bit more daylight up the sleeve.

Would it be easier for those interested if we went back a week to 28th/29th ?? Let me know.

I'm good for either weekend, just a daytripper though, there and back in a day. If it's not raining.......
