This weekend is fine but again, just a day trip for me.
I gotta do Denniston.
Padmei
17th April 2012, 17:42
I would prob be in for the following weekend but don't let that dictate things as the weather could change & it could be crap & I decide not to go.
I'm feeling that everyone is prefering the idea of day ride rather than a night away.

Ok I think I have the hang of this - this Saturday 8:45 at Mobil Richmond for a 9am start - straight ish to iron bridge over to Denniston and back again and if any time left do other stuff?
Not 2 days
Not going to Reefton
Not staying at the nurses home

Last time I made it from Reefton ,over the plateau to westyport and back round the highway to Murch on about 12L or less than 200km of range .
The tank ran dry on the bridge into Murch and I coasted to the pumps without needing the brakes to stop
9am Richmond .... maybe I can do this from home and back in one day, better put the swingarm back on and change that tyre.

If I leave at 7am.. 1 hour up to St Arnauds.. (over 100k up that valley)
that leaves 2 - 2 1/2 hours for the Porika/Braeburn/Mangle valley/murch..
Can't see the point rideing passed the turn to get to Murch...

At least your high beam works to modern standards.
25w of 6v goodness, isn't really a hell of a lot.
The bead finally bedded around the rim locks by the time we got to Murch and went well all the way home.
Although I'll be putting a different tube in the new tyre. A 120/100 Pirelli heavy duty is a bit of a mission to install in a 120/80 tyre.
Got breathalized in Tahuna and Mr Plod says "hey, am I on tv?" :D

12hrs rideing + 1hr watching Nordie fix that dam tyre...
Not a place to ride on yer own...
Ever noticed how steep hills don't look so steep
in a picture..
One thing that was unreal was the coal seams in
the banks where the roads had been cut though
2 + metres thick.... Rideing on coal was something new..
Black coal dust version of mud was slipprey... Had the front & rear wheel
go in diffrent direction at one stage..
A great place for a ride...
Edit....
I did leave at 7:10am as I done the Porika & Braeburn on the way to murch..

22nd April 2012, 17:14
The NADS (Pete_blen, umopom, rigley, underground, NordieBoy) left the Richmond Mobil on the dot of 9:07am.
Except for Rigley...
Caltex in Hope is not Mobil Richmond...
Umopom was getting cold so we branched off onto Elvys Rd and then onto Big Bush Rd, coming out on the Glenhope straight before Huha Backpackers.
A bit of fun on road tyre pressures.
Peeled off by the Iron Bridge and lowered the tyre pressures. Gravel time. The gate was open and the track was in good condition. Only a couple of muddy bits to cause excitement. The Mackley was very low, not even axle deep. The descent down to it was a bit of fun as my spare fuel kept sliding forward and I ended up sitting on top of it to keep it in place. Not ideal on a steep down hill :D
Dumped the gas into the TT & DRZ so I wouldn't have to carry it any further and we crossed the river. (Turns out I could have made it without the extra fuel - probably).
Rigley didn't even come off with 5 cameras pointed at him...
Overcast all the way through, so almost perfect riding conditions.
The climb up Mt Rochfort to the TV tower was cool. Lots of different surfaces but as I'd elected to not put in my ear plugs for this bit, I could hear every rattle and clank from the bike. Not nice.
Much better on the way back down.
The views from the top would be spectacular if it wasn't foggy.
It was foggy.
We headed off to the Denniston Incline to have a look. Pete thought he'd take a shortcut on a tight left hander. I didn't know an XR250 could pull up so quickly on a grass verge. Nice panic braking mate :D
The incline was very coaly and incliney, not to mention rusty.
The bowling green was cool. Not sure why they've got a roller up there though. It was hard enough to walk on it.
Stopped on the way back for a quick gander at a bit of the burning mine.
Only 2 people fell off on the way back. No names but how do you say "the front washed out" in Brum? The other managed a single handed dismount right at the exit of the Mackley.
Somewhere on the way back I punctured the rear without noticing it 'till checking and finding a absence of pressure at the Iron Bridge.
Tube replaced near Big Deep Creek and 25w the 80's finest lighting saw me home.
I wanna go on Anzac Day too.

Hmmm. If others are def keen on going on Wednesday then I will ponder it for a day or so before commiting.
Any shortcuts along the way? Or maybe leave early. The bit about Umopom getting cold worries me tho. A cold padmei is a grumpy padmei :(
I am def going riding on Wed so maybe just cruise thru Porika, braeburn maruia return on Schmidtty if no interest. I'm not too fussed which one I do. I would like to see the incline i've heard & read about tho.

Missed Padmei, so headed out to erase his hour head start...
Assuming I was going in the same direction of course.
Got to the Spooners and started to have some stomachular issues.
Dropped down and had a look at the mightily impressive door covering the entrance to the 1.3km long disused rail tunnel. Impressive.
Then curved back around to the top of the Spooners and headed back along Berrymans Rd toward the Moutere.
Was going well with only a few more "issues" and realised I was on the road to Panic Mac.
What the hell, I thought. I've got a pruning saw and camera, what could possibly go wrong?
I only had to cut my way through 2 fallen trees and the ones that blocked me coming the other way last time, I managed to avoid by riding up the bank next to them, untangling the footpeg from the old fencing wire and dropping back down again in the clear :headbang:
Then Dovedale Hill, north at the summit and Foxes Rd onto Deepdale Rd, Sunrise Valley, Moutere Highway and home via some Moutere Highway clay, Appleby River gravel and Marsden Valley dirt.
Today would have been perfect to see how far south you could get up the river, but I had the decidedly non-waterproof digital SLR with me and I was getting sick of having to stop with "issues"...

yeah sorry Nordie. I thought from your post last nite that you were looking after Jen & or maybe having a lil ride around home.
Your pics look good - you took your good camera didn't you ;) That last pic is pretty indicative of the wonderful Autumn colours coating the trees at the mo.
I struck out at 9am towards St Arnaud. Beautiful day as we know.
Pulled into the usual cafe at St arnaud however it was closed. Went across & had a machine coffee at the garage & met up with a father & son duo Ian & Andrew. Andrew is a Nelson lad with a DR650 (he was a nice guy despite that) His dad Ian was riding a XR650 - one of the ones that was sorted out for cross Oz trip a few years ago. Looked pretty RTW worthy.
They were keen on tagging along with me across the Porika, Braeburn & Maruia Saddle.
So off we went.
Porika is well groomed & is easily big bikeable, Braeburn hasn't changed much but the Maruia looked like it has had a fair bit of work done to it.
All good with a nice ride, pleasant company & the screen was a real bloody pearler- very warm & toasty behind it

Is anybody thinking of going down to the Lamb Valley Laid back? I've just spent the day sorting out the EXC (finally sorted it from the DB1k) so thinking a ride for the first time in 3 months would be nice. Problem is I can't take Monday off so transport down to Lamb valley is a bit of any issue for me cause Wife will need to bring our vehicle down to Lamb valley to collect me at end of ride. Is anybody else taking a trailer down from NN?

Not so much a laid back as a "Tough Guys Trail Ride".
"A" grade loops of Lamb Valley, in the rain, with no bypasses.
If we can convince Padmei that it's a nice easy ride then he may take a trailer.
If I go, I'll be riding down.

What time does it kick off ? I'm pretty sure we're trailering the Ten to Springs Junc on sunday. Probly wouldn't be going past Lamb Valley till about 9:30ish.

"A" grade loops of Lamb Valley, in the rain, with no bypasses.
If we can convince Padmei that it's a nice easy ride then he may take a trailer.
If I go, I'll be riding down.

Beemer bought from Waiheke island Auckland. It was quite a common colour - Nutso has one too. I haven't seen any red ones around here but quite a few bumblebees & a couple of red & white ones.
You're not thinking of Russel another bloody pommy pretend sparky are ya? he sold his one to Graham down in Chch. be good to see ya out on the trails sometime.
As for screens for the DRZ I find the headlite does a really good job of directing air away & am going to screw a piece of plastic maybe 50-75mm to the top of the headlite shroud to direct the air higher.

Hira and the Mangatapu are in great nick at the moment, spent 3 hrs yesterday burning fossil fuel and destroying rubber. Dirt damp enough for great traction, but not too damp to make it slippery. :woohoo:
Hira seems rockier than usual though, looks like a logging dozer has been tearing up the ground in some parts.

Yea, just got back from Hira and Maungatap, tried pushing my limits on some hills with the smooth tyre but turned back BEFORE yes BEFORE getting in the shit. Didn't know you could get to the caretakers hut from the back of Hira without going on the maitai road, its good to know. The gate at the caretakers hut was a jar so that was good. Maungatap was very good, not too smooth, just right really. Would have had a free run over the Whangas to if it wasn't for a couple of motorbikes riding slow and not pulling over like cars/trucks etc do. Bloody motorcyclists :bleh:. Na no stress the road was a bit wet in places. Got home and taught my young neighbour how to change the tyre on his WR, well ok I did it and he watched.
Great afternoon.

I managed to get out this avo for a short one. I went up Kaka hill & stupidly went down the western side. I have looked at it before & thought about it but seeing there was tyre tracks I followed them. It was a bit slippery with big schisty type rocks but not too bad.
I actually dismounted & walked down a chute- something I can't remember doing for a long time. Wiseness took over when I realised it was pretty steep from there on down & I was alone, half crook & buggered before I started so turned back.
Riding back up the skidder track I lost traction & fell off. There were some fricking big sharp rocks pushed to the side of the track & the bike landed on the tank. If anything was gonna puncture it then it would be these barstards.
Bike seemed alright so I remounted & bounced back up. This is the part that would have had you laughing. My glasses had fogged up picking up my bike so I flipped the front of the helmet up & thought I would ride up with it open to give me better vision. As the front wheel richocheted off the first big slippery rock the lid came falling back down. It didn't close properly however & sat there with the chin guard right in my line of vision.
I could see a teaspoon amount of the track out of a 6mm slit but I was in motion & there was no way I was going to stop & try to restart again.
Well I rode for about 20m zigzaging up that bloody track hitting everything in my way until I pulled up at a semi level section. I raised my lid again, took some deep slow breaths, shook my head at my stupidity & took off again with my lid raised:facepalm:
Anyway long story longer, I somehow mangled my speedo drive (pics in Schmidt thread) & I quietly made my way home after dropping the bike a few more times...

My clutch got as real workout today too.
Dropped down from Isolation to the Gun Club Valley (much prefer going up that one) and tried going up a ridge to the east to get out.
Got to within about 200m of the top and was in severe danger of looping the bike if I attempted the last section. Took about 10min to get back down.
Went down Linton Hill and had a little play around.
The trials tyre needs lower gearing for this stuff.
I'd like to go slower.
Great fun :D

Ditches are comfortable. Just lie back in one and pine for the fjords...
There's a short cool track near the start of Scout Rd, to the right as you go around the gate. It bypasses most of the clay.
There's also a track on Westley's Rd that I'm not sure where it comes out as it's wet, muddy and rooty...
The track that comes out at the Teal Valley gate looks to be a good'un too. For 2 or more people from the Teal end or possibly solo from the top end off Westleys.
I tried cutting some scrub that was stopping me going between 2 mucky puddles of indeterminate depth on the Maungatapu and in the distance I could hear the buzzing of some 2-strokes. Oops. The scrub was in the middle of a wasp nest
After all that, I got a branch and tested the depth around the northern side. Shallow and a base like concrete

The rabbits were too fast for the chainsaw though :(
The new track off Westleys looks to be the exit. No idea where the other end is, but there's no way in hell I can get any further from this end. I only got about 15m further than last Sunday.
Got from Westleys Rd to the Teal Rd gate though. The only real gnarly bit is where I stopped last weekend. Possibly gettable uppable by 2 peeps but not me on me own. Was slippery enough bulldogging down it. The rest of the track is cool, rocky but not too steep. Makes for a nice loop option.
I climbed the steep bit beside the gate for a laugh. I'm going to put a rock by a large root for a step as it was the only bit that really stopped me for any length of time.
As you head up from the Sharlands carpark, through the ford (around the gate), up a km and go up the first road to your left. Was blocked by a slip/trees, more trees and more trees.
Blocked no more :shifty:
Goes on for a km or so, a couple of downhill mtb tracks cross it and it dead ends just before coming out to what would be a great view :pinch:

Any NADS with a bike and knobblies want a ride on Sunday?
Pig Valley 3-hr Cross Country. NordieBro says you can join the juniors as "marshals" and you don't have to pay MNZ day license fees and still get a 1 1/2 hr ride in.
I'll be there marshalling my little arse off on the TT and getting photos of everything...
Hope it's not raining as I'd like to use the good camera this time.

Nowadays we use "petrol" in the bikes and they have "suspension" and "brakes".

Hey I seem to be chasing you around threads. friggen cold here today.
Dragged the benelli engine out today and attacked it with some verniers, the result being that I ordered a 77mm xr250 piston off the internet. Its the closest I can find so will need to make a new gudgeon bush to suit the smaller pin and remove 4mm off the bottom of the barrel and shorten the pushrods but it should work. Giving myself 1 year to get it ride down the drivewayable.:killingme
Might start a build thread on adv later. with pics and everything.

Getting a piston made is a disaster, generally minimum quantities of 4.
Padmei, the original piston is there, but for some reason, (possibly drunk) I bored the barrel out 4mm oversize on my last day as an engine rebuilder:weird:
Can't for the life of me remember what i bored it to suit, but the xr one isn't far off except for pin size and compression height hence the minor mods to make it work. Man oh man do I wish I had access to an engine shop again, all those lurvely machines.

If there's enough interest in Anatori, we could possibly organise to have a proper lunch at the Nugget Cafe. I'd need numbers confirmed though.
Hira just needs Moro bars.
Hira is more a low speed slog with people pushing bikes around a bit as it'll be soggy still. The Gun Club bit isn't as steep as some we've done and is a cool ride for those who haven't braved the drop down from Mt Everest.

Whatabout we just stay close to coffee- I mean ride hard up in Hira & leave the long distance till it warms up. Besides which I put my special offorad only knob on last nite & don't want to wreck it riding over there.
I put it on last nite when it was cold etc & found out that if I take my time, think about it, use gravity to its' advantage & don't fight it the tyre will actually go on reasonably ok.- took best part of n hour tho - not exactly ISDE

So you did the fenceline from near the northern trig "Ekatahuna Barstard" back south?
Just spent 2hrs trickling along, doing the fenceline in both directions and twice around Isolated Trig Rd (dosn't really dead end, just sometimes you wish it did :devil2:).
No sign of "The Package".
It's amazing how many wet rocks in the early morning sun, look plastic wrapped.
Found a couple of shotgun shells, kwakka plastic, suzuki plastic, THH helmet peak, Thor boot buckle, beer bottles, pig skin...
Didn't bring any of them home either

Did another loop this afternoon.
No sign.
Found some "shitting myself" type downhills though.
Also found the loop track I was looking for yesterday. It does come out the north end of Top Rd.
As far as I can tell, a skid site now chops Teal Rd in two, with no access through it.

I took schmidt out for a ride this avo & found I can get in easily at the top of the Whangas. Rode down thru Central road to Teal valley lookout skidder site.
You know how they have graded that firebreak there that we ride up & down well the very top is like shit now - loose as a goose. Couldn't get up & had another fricking laydown. Didn't even want to retry it.:pinch:
Had some 2ters wondering WTF I was doing in there:weird:

I went up top road last week, it goes right to the top where there is a big fallen tree and a dead piglet. Very gorsey. on the way down there is a very long steep downhill that gets ultra knarly where it comes out on the road. Is that the same place? Good track.

Probably :D
Ends up at a little water rutted chute with a small tree in the middle between Scout Rd and Waterfall Rd.
Padmei and I had a bit of fun up Waterfall Rd in the soft dirt.
Going in again for a "proper" play tomorrow at 11am.
There'll be at least one other TT350 there.

Another 5hr loop in Hira today. Two TT350's making the forest reverberate with the unbridled power of the mighty 20hp, twin cam engines.
There were a couple of fantails following us, but I thought they normally only followed trampers?
We were going faster than walking pace! honest!

Cruised out to Brightwater at 10am in gusty wind, occasional rain and 10* temps.
Rode back to Nelson at 1pm in fcukin strong gusts, rain, 6*, trees down, power wires down, even a street sign down.
I was shitting myself Brightwater to Richmond. 30-40kph max.
Everything is copping a hammering.
