Just spent an hour fiddling with it.
Popped a side off and rotated the tyre 90* and it went on a little better.
Also balanced it, just for the hell of it.

I just picked up another rear wheel for the XR...
old steel rim with drum brake... freeby so it will do..
now just got to shoe horn it in..
bearings are the big prob.. has a 15mm axle...
17mm bearing have a diffrent OD.. 20mm bearings
come in the right OD.. so prob end up pressing
internal sleeves in them to bring the down to 17mm ID..

nothing is ever straight foward..:(

People cutting scrub on weekends is usually associated with a community imposed recompence for some sort of irritant behaviour....so there should be lots of kiwibikers out there who can relate to this post....not me though :shifty:

That baby machete only looks good enough to shave with.:devil2:

I bought one of these recently, a 2 in 1 machete, leave the pruning saw at home....

When u really need some good slashing power, go the longer blade, the saw component is a bonus.

Sounds like my ride only Sunday, I got, rode around a bit, then up Mangatapu, got flat front tyre, rode round a bit more on flat front, didn't fall off, went home and changed it. The EXC goes quite well on a flat front, just no hard cornering.;)

Went and had a good play in the snow with the family yesterday at St Arnaud (in the car) good fun but bloody cold. Glad I didn't take the bike. No ice = good skids!
Plenty of ice today though, it's gonna be lethal next couple of days. Feckin cold too.

Just been for a cruise up the the Maungatapu summit.

Took 15min to get up Hurricane Hill, but I made it...
Maybe Shinko 705's aren't optimal for winter clay?

Did some track clearing in the Maungatapu. A few branches were blocking the track along the Akatarawa Extreme section. Cleared 5-6 manuka's that had come down on the corkscrew bypass.

The Omega neck brace gets pushed slightly forward by the Ogio vest meaning I can't tilt my head back as far as normal when standing going downhill but it'll be easy enough to get used to.
The brace limits tilting your head left and right but tilting forward and turning side to side are not restricted at all. I like it.

Just got me a Canon PowerShot D10 camera off TradeMe to replace the Olympus 1030sw with the dead LCD.
Both are 10m waterproof etc but the Canon is a lot more bulky but looks to have the edge in picture quality and also has optical IS which really helps in low light situations. Also 12mp vs 10mp and it takes SD cards instead of the brain dead XD's.

It's easier to make spacers to the new size and then when you find the new ones are too short, you can put the old ones back in.

I've got plenty of high pressure hydro tubing to make some out of. What length are you after?

Def shed day today.

Hey Padmei, here is a photo of the tierod nut I was talking about.
Shank OD 13.9mm Hexhead size 19mm internal thread 10mm
You may need to shorten up the round shank to the depth of the block.
You may want to cut half the hexhead off down to 5mm as its not all required in this case
You will have to make sure the stripped thread diameter goes right through the block
You will be able to use the original Barrel / head stud
You will have to use a dremel / grinder to cut a grove in the last 5mm of the shank to accommadate the oil gallery
You will have to use a dremel / grinder to cut a 1/4 moon in the side of the hex head so that the barrel will still fit in and
You will have to Loctite Plastic Metal it into position so that the oil grove and the cut away for the barrel stay in the correct position and stop any leakage of oil pressure back into the sump around the unmachined surface on the inside of the block.
Just my thoughts on a KIWI # 8 wire solution so that you dont have to replace the block.
I will post the part # tomorrow and where you can buy one.

Cheers GSers.

Padmei
15th July 2012, 11:36
You're awesome Gsers. Thanks for that. I had a brainwave this morning & realised I could weld a stud to a flat backing plate & have that siting inside the block but your idea sounds lees bodgy than mine cheers.

I made a pile of 5mm spacers to fine tune with.

With the 0.48kg springs and Intiminators, I ended up with 5mm preload as feeling the best.

On the TT, I pulled the spacer entirely when putting the Intiminators in.

The hydro tube I've got is slightly too large OD and needs skimming down.
The little lathe is sweet for making the face nice and true so it doesn't cock the spring sideways at all :headbang:

Either the bike was going to arse over, or the bike with me on it was going to arse over.
I pick the options that result in less damage to me.

Me. I was looking at his progress on SPOT tracking the other day. No trip dramas apart from some searing desert heat.
He scored the route maps off my workmate, so JC has been sending him some updates.

Same workmate is off to Chile/Peru in Oct and will be riding a lot of the Dakar route. Bastardo as they say in Spanish.

Was initially keen for the Laid Back at Borlase, but it is probably trailer queen stuff and I don't have a towbar. Last ride out there with DOT enduro knobblies was very hard in the wet greasy stuff on the A grade bits, especially - but not limited to - the steep uphills!

Not sure if I am fit enough to ride either as I have an injured ankle and finger... must do a test ride today to find out. Might not even be able to get boots on over swollen foot. I was considering going out as a helper and just having a quiet tootle around the easy stuff marshalling maybe, dunno.

For 10 days i'd be inclined to do a road trip around & including Golden Bay, Port Underwood, Lake Rotoiti, West coast etc etc. Nelson is good but there are many more fine places to see as well with all that time.
Tahuna camp ground is a pretty cool but busy place. The Maitai campground is more laidback. The Brook motorcamp has basic cabins & I think you can hire caravans.
If you have a GPS CooneyRs site may be beneficial. If there's a nads rideout you'd be most welcome to join us.

We're both very capable offroad/gravel riders and will be on XT660Rs so we're keen on those roads up behind Nelson that you chaps so fondly talk about. Obviously the 660 is no dirtbike but it is certainly capable in the dry.
Not overly fond of Tarmac and it's likely we will have just done 900 or so klms of the black stuff.

Our plan is to find a place to base ourselves that has as many comforts as possible and ride out from there. 1 day rides, 2 day rides that sort of thing.
I lived in Chch for eleven years and have not seen it since it got hit by the quakes so will probably head down there for a night via Hanmer. The hills above and beyond Nelson look like fantastic riding and that's mostly what we're keen on exploring.
Up here there are no serious mountains and everything is rolling green or native bush so it's quite different.
Nice but different.

Nelson is a great place to kick back - many things to do.
Unfortunately the forests behind us are closed during work time due to logging so the forests are out of bounds until 5.30 evenings & weekends.
Hori bay is a cool places tho & is open all the time. A trip across to Anatori would be awesome - you get to see Golden bay & a taste of the West coast too.

Are there still viruses around? I know when I got a pc about 10 years ago it got a few but I've not had any (that I know of) since I can remember & I visit lots of dodgy DR rider sites.

I read your Nelson thread often as a friend & I are coming down next March to do some riding in your area. (Some Posts last Week) We often get ripped on parts up here as there aren’t to many bike shops.
There are however a lot of riders and a group of us are in the process of forming a Collective Purchasing Group in order to secure better deals. We’re all well known to each other so it should work and have all been getting pissed off just getting the obligatory 10% discount.
Strength in numbers we reckon, turn it around on the retailer, make him work for our hard earned cash. We’re not after stupid discounts and I am an ex retailer so are aware of overheads but I am also aware of some of the margins these retailers have to play with. (Something you guys might consider)
Cheers, see ya’ll next year.

I had the opportunity to shoot out to Hori bay this avo.
It was awesomely warm & sunny.
I came to the hill of impossibility which looked rutteder & rockier & crappier than I've seen after the rains etc.
I was on a photo trip so thought I'd just ride up slowly to where I would inevitably fall over/ run into a pine tree/ bottom out/ loop the bike & get a couple of fun shots you could laugh at.
I rode up & amazingly the bike went the way I pointed it - it was bizarre. I got further than I had ever before & really started to wonder of I'd fall off the top of the world:crazy:

It smooths out past 1/2 way up.
Shit I'm at the top:shit:

That was um.... easy.
Wonder why it was so different from the last thousand times I've never gotten up?
Could have something to do with those square bits of rubber on the rear wheel I reckon.

NordieBro thinks about 20 or more "experts" and no idea how many intermediate, trail and youth class...

If the weather was fine, then it'd be great fun to ride.

Sounds like I rode 99% of the expert loop the other weekend...

We could do the expert loop at nice slow pace on a NADS ride if everyone had knobblies. Most of the places, we've already been.

The intermediate loop is Shinko 705 territory no probs.

No I don't think so Nordieboy. I would say good knobblies all the way.
I went for a blat & caught up with Nordiebro putting out some arrows.
He warned me not to go up or down too many arrowed tracks. I of course didn't listen.
I started to go down a track beside Thomas rd tht drops down onto sharlands however it was dark, slippery, rooty & I was alone so decided to back track.
I dropped down a track on the other side of Thomas road & had 2 falls headfirst into gorse:pinch: Some of those tracks will be murderous after a couple of bikes have been down. They are cambered slippery clay goat tracks with drop offs into gorse.

I had a go up hurricane hill. The A line is pretty slippery & the B line has a very deep rut past the tree trunk so turned back & went on the gravel.

A good fun ride but a really lite bike would be the go tommorrow.

Hello. I am communicating with you all on a new piece of technology.
It is called an iPad.
Notice how the I is small at the beginning of the name iPad. Pretty nifty idea.
I'm expecting most of you people don't know what an iPad is- well imagine a blank pad like a writing pad however you don't write on it with a pen but a keyboard is part of the screen.

Yes really! I'm stabbing my digit onto images of letters and the corresponding words are presented on the screen.

Apparently these have only been out for a few weeks and are regarded by the tech savvy such as myself to be the best technological breakthrough since the intertrap was invented late last year.

I believe one can also use them to design windscreens with a app (short for application- yes cool abb isn't it) called wind tunnel.

There is also a game where you can actually catapault willing little brightly colored birds into structures of timber, glass, rocks and all sorts . Very entertaining.

Ok toddles!

well I've spent the morning making up a support bracket under the subframe to hold a rack for the back of the DRZ. AND in doing so stripped a fricking captive nut thing that is inside the subframe.
I kinda ignored it & carried on but now feel a bit guilty so will get out the 8mm tap set.

The fricking rack better not break on the first drop.
I won't be putting up any pics cos Josh will feel so inferior with my incredible rack making skills:sick:

I've grown to love rain & shitty weather - I might move back to Auckland

It's raining so I went for a pushie ride up the centre of nz and down behind founders. I've got a fake cyclocross bike so I feel less guilty about pushing and carrying it up the hills than I do on the mtb...

Txt'd NordieBro to see when he's going to do my cam chain but haven't heard back...
