Timing chain on the TT Nordie?
Yep.
Very vibey until about 6,000rpm. When I got it was smooth right through the range.
Don't think the chain or guides got replaced when the piston/rings and bottom end got done.

What's the best option for air filters Nordie?
Jatz what's that bag like on the front guard of your bike? i'm thinking of getting one but not if they fall off, are difficult to undo, or rip really easily.
I finished my rack for the DRZ & it doesn't look too bad. I have now split my tools up for the DRZ & BMW. Guess which one has more tools for it?
Woodman spare cushdrive bearing here for ya.
Topo found your tube again.

I like TwinAir but anything works.
Pre-oiled NoToil seems like a good deal...
http://www.bits4bikes.co.nz/parts/suzuki/1148.aspx?terms=air+filter
I like the NoToil maintenance kit too. Wash the filter out in the sink.
If you're not a member, you get a $25 discount to join...

If it's one of the strap-on-front-guard-with-2-tyre-levers-etc ones, I may have one in the emporium you can try...

Looks to be the same price as in the shops I think.
I may try the bag thing. If you didn't have the action man vest would you use it? Have you used it & if so what was it like?

What's the best option for air filters Nordie?I've always used KTM/TwinAir OEM stuff, with No Toil by far the best cleaner system. Munn Racing (KTM of Texas) sell & recommend DT-1, which I see Torpedo 7 now sell, introductory special $6.99.
Signed,

It doesn't work on the TT because of the brace on top of the guard. It doesn't work on the DR because the headlight is mounted too low and the kiwi is in the way.
It works nicely.
You file some small (1-2mm deep) notches in the edge of the guard to sit the clips in and they don't move at all.
Only really room for one tube and 2 levers.
Strong material.

I saw those on T7 but discounted them straight away due to the cheap cost. Expensive engine rebuilds & all that. maybe I'll look them up & see what people say about them.

Are you setting the klx up for some longer rides?
well yeah nah maybe???
I have been intending to put a rack on the back of it so I don't have to carry a backpack all the time. At the same time I thought I should really change the airfilter as it hasn't been changed ( cleaned yes a few times) since i've had it.
I got a warrant the other day so I'm getting it ready for summer.
I do want to take it to Anatori etc again so if that's a long ride... It also may take a month to put Schmidt back together judging by the way time is flying by.
I've been researching airfilters & on TT they were warning not to use K&Ns for really dusty situations. They are good for the road but. Seems those DT1s are pretty rated out there & for $6 they look like a dynOmite deal. It's a pity they don't list a DRZ 400 one. They are a different stock no than the others - I thought air filters were all alike.

They just phrase it advantageously.
At Munns the KTM TwinAir filter is $22 vs $20 for the DT-1 (USD), so they are a bargain at T7.

Yeah it's o.k, it can be a bit hard to get on tight but seems to hang on o.k. Just don't try to cram to much stuff in it.

Two motorcross riders are in hospital after colliding head-on with each other near Nelson today.
A 21-year-old man with serious injuries was treated by St John paramedics at the Hira Forest/Sharlands creek area at 12:30pm today.
He was airlifted to Nelson Hospital by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.
The second rider sustained moderate injuries and was also transported by helicopter to a waiting ambulance in the Matai valley and transported to Nelson Hospital by road.
No other information was available.

I reckon those were the bikes I heard when I was up Tantragee walking with the kids this morn just before I saw a crazed ginga bearded mtber.
Hasn't been a good week for bike riders in Nelson this week. Last Monday there was a a cop car opp the stop sign outside our house. I wondered why he was sitting there when I realised he was hidden from oncoming traffic. Nek minnit a red ninja passes a string of cars on the wrong side of the wet road without 100m visability in a 80k area. Judging by the single exhaust it looked like a 250 & there were no L plates on it. As he passed me his head rocked back in a "oh F**K" way.
The next day there was a bike down towards town with a silver helmeted head being held still by a passerby.
I took the opportunity to head out to hori bay for an hour & a half blat. Just back as the big drops started. My rack worked very well:niceone:

Hmmm I left the Kaka car park at 12:00 and then headed up Central Rd, Maitai Face Rd, Goat Hill Rd. Was probably mucking around up the top of Central about the time of the incident. Didn't notice anything, but then I live across the road from the helipad so hearing the rescue chopper doesn't always register with the conscious brain.
In all honesty I'm surprised there's not more incidents like it, but perhaps only the worst cases (airlift) make the news. Even today a couple of times I had oncoming riders swerve wildly because they were on the wrong side of the road on blind corners.

So, who's a starter for the wet Six Hour race today? ............... NOOOOOOOOOOOT me. That would involve getting really muddy and sore.
I might go up Rainbow skifield on Tues when the sun comes out again. Access road is sweet. Y'know feed the keas and chuck snowballs just for the hell of it.

So, who's a starter for the wet Six Hour race today? ............... NOOOOOOOOOOOT me..MEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee! Was a great track, would've been a blast on a proper dirt bike with proper dirt tyres. ;) I was a roaming marshal 'cos I'm just not race fit at the moment. I didn't do the single track bits they'd cut (and one was later removed from the course) but did most of it twice and it was pretty tiring on the 640. Once the rain stopped the track started to dry out and the lack of liquid sunshine meant you could see. Some of the muddy bits became quite tacky. I stalled coming down the Hurricane Hill bypass and could not push the bike down hill due to the sticky mud.
There are so many changed/closed/new tracks in there it's not funny. Some places are quite hard to recognise due to logging and the changed roads. It was great to do some new stuff in there. Of note was a great long hill climb from the fords down the bottom of Teal Valley almost straight up to Central Rd near Teal Saddle. Fsckin' A! It will be great riding in there for while, now that the track has been bedded in :2thumbsup

16th September 2012, 22:57
I didn't see much of the enduro course. Just drove up Central Rd to the checkpoint, and the station I was at all day was the "experts only" terrain test. NordieBro is usually very encouraging, but he came out of there the first time and said, "it's not 640 territory". Certainly not in the howling rain, it isn't. Is a good tree root test

I made the most of the sun today and did my planned excursion down to Rainbow Skifield. The skifield road report was all good so I gapped it from town mid morning and rode down there via a few select gravel "shortcuts".
Well worth the day ride, even if ya don't go boarding/skiing, just to soak up the sun, have a coffee, and keep an eye on the keas. A few punters commented how the bike would be a great way to get up the hill, I kinda agreed.

Yep, road totally clear of ice/snow pack. Bloody tempting to ride up the West Bowl track in photo, but I'm sure they would seek and destroy me if I did.
General mid-week crowd up there, certainly not a zoo. Primo spring conditions, 80cm base on main trails.

It was a ride I organised back in 2009 (wow, doesn't time fly when there's a new arrival in the house)
Here' s the linky with route and summits http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/104638-Seven-Summits-Spring-Safari?highlight=summits
Route could easily be modified without too much effort, but permission for forestry land access is the biggest hassle. I would've liked to have done Beeby's Knob down at St Arnaud, and also Rainbow Skifield, but it seems DOC don't like to open locked gates for motorsickles.

1pm at Sharlands?Yep. I was planning to attack the gnarlier stuff. Much of it would be doable in the dry with smooth tyres, and much of it has nearby road routes. We'll sort something out.
I also wanted to have a look at the enduro terrain tests - might take a little finding as I was stationed at the experts only one, and you don't want to go in there without knobs - and possibly not at all on an adventure bike!

The clay had a nice hard top.
Unfortunately, the top was only 5mm thick and underneath was perma-slop.
You could stand on one side and see the other side ooze...
I think that was the slickest clay I've ridden in/on.
Even Mt Greenland gave more traction...
Farrrrk, I've missed this sort of stuff :headbang::clap::niceone:

After the rugger i devided to go for a low key exploring type ride out Dovedale way. Went up sunday creek road and saw some cool forest tracks about where the old Panic Mac track started so tried a few. Got stuck on one hill as it was too steep so tried another that went on and on and eventually started looking familiar albeit now with no trees.
All was going well then the engine spluttered a bit and then eventually stopped going down a hill. Out of gas, bugger no worries my 28-ish litre tank has a pretty good reserve so I switched it over on the fly but it still wouldn't go so i stopped to investigate. Checked the fuel tap and looked in the tank, and realised to my horror that I was already on reserve and the tank was as dry as a dry thing. Nothing to do but start walking so thats what I did, after about half an hour of walking mostly uphill I thought I would call one of the NADS, but the problem was, i had no idea where I was. Anyway another hour and a half walking with my mx boots forming blisters on my feet I eventually came to an intersection that looked like it went somewhere. Was just deciding what to do when a Vitara with a couple of pig hunters came along so I hailed them down and asked if they had gas. They had about 300ml in a can for the mower so I jumped in the back with the pigdogs and they drove me back to the bike.
Woodman
30th September 2012, 22:15
We got to the bike and I duly poured the gas in, knowing that it was barely enough to get me to where they picked me up. The bike still wouldn't go so I checked the fuel tap, as ya do, and it was in the off position. Funny, don't remember turning it off:facepalm:. You know where this is going right? Anyway I discreetly turned the tap to reserve and the bike started.:bash: The pig hunters said they would follow me to a gate and gave me directions to Trass valley road (cool track btw) which is mostly downhill so coastable when I run out of gas. They then gave me a pak,n,save bag to tie to another gate that would indicate if I had been through or not so when they drove out they would know whether to wait and take me to the gas station. Top blokes IMHO and they wouldn't take any dosh for gas etc. Thanks guys, whoever you are.
Anyway I didn't have the heart to tell them that I had plenty of gas all the time, so rode out , tied the bag to the gate and rode home somewhat redfaced.

The golf course and Tantragee seem much rougher going this way though.
Going to pull the TT apart a little more this weekend. Hopefully end up with the definitive list of things to replace to get that damn cam chain in there...

Man that chicks got long legs, & they're hairy, oooh not very pretty either - hey that's Fran riding :eek5: You should get up Third house & back easily on that steed Nordie - just be gentle with the walkers they get a fright easily - thats why I got rid of my bell
Had jatz round here tonite - we're gonna hot up the Stihl whippersnipper - gotta get a few more thousand revs out of her. Just gotta get a seal & avgas. I'll dial in the suspension later.
We gotta do a few evening rides before summer ends - who's in? What time suits? I guess over Moutere / Wairoa would suit the outlanders.

Bluegums? Oh, up behind Founders!
I read the track description for the last x-country on the mtb site...
"Start Andrews Field, up Tantragee Rd, left through gate up Summit Rd, right turn up Codgers, left onto Pipeline, left down Drain, right up Summit Rd, left down Pipilini, right down Codgers, right up Upper Pipeline Link, left down to Codgers, right at Codgers left down Andrews Kink, left onto Brook Walk, left up Grass Seed Traverse, right along Lower Rd, up DC to top, right down Whip on to Cane, left onto Lower Rd, right at Summit Rd, Right onto Walnut and back onto Andrews Field."
I know where the Tantragee Road is...

On Stuff this morning
RIP :bye:
A 56-year-old motorcyclist from Takaka has died in a collision with a car driven by an 80-year-old Nelson man.
The crash happened at 5.30pm yesterday at Appleby, near Richmond, at the intersection of State Highway 60 and Cotterell Rd, known as Pea Viner Corner.
Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy, of Nelson, said the silver hatchback car was coming out of Cotterell Rd and indicating to turn right to head towards Nelson, and collided with the motorcyclist who was heading towards Motueka.
The motorcyclist was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson Sportster. There was no indication of speeding, he said.
The deceased was expected to be identified by next of kin today.
Serious crash investigators and detectives are investigating the crash. The vehicles will be examined tomorrow and witnesses are being interviewed.

Only thing the Mail got wrong is the bit about "coming out of Cotterell and heading toward Nelson", he'd be turning left and be nowhere near the bike.

The hour & a half to get up was well worth the 20-30min downhill. Very boney, great tight switchbacks.

it was a road bike and it happened about 20 mins before I got home  not much help aye ?
I saw a couple of cars on the side of the road, one with hazard lights on, and a chick I know standing by the road. So I spun 'round to see if all was o.k. It was, it was then I noticed the bike down a bank and a couple of people in the bottom of a small gulley. It was just as well it happened right in front of my friend or it could have been a while before it was discovered. Apparently the bike just lost control of the back end (mecanical failure?) on a straight piece of road.

Helicopter has landed in the park behind our house to refuel and I think, ferry a load of fire fighters up there. There's no easy or quick vehicle access.
There's a couple of lights entering the trees from the top left...
A couple of fire engines have gone up via Bay View Rd way.
Saw a small headlight leave via the bottom right. Pushbike by the speed of it...

Just went for a ride on Padmeis rear. Just as bouncy as mine only shorter. Will do for now though, mind you come to think of it my rear was pretty fun the other weekend, so maybe Padmeis will be just as much fun tomorrow.
Hori Bay, meet somewhere up that end?

Hello there. Hopefully wil be able to make it. I spent the day riding over to Golden bay & sat on the beach drinking coffee & yakking so obviously quite tired after that.
Do you mean the church down the end of my driveway/street?
i will text you if I'm not coming.

I'll be in Nelson all this coming week. A pity it'll be on a road bike rather than an adventure bike, but I'd be open for beer at some stage.
I'm leaving here at 8:00 tomorrow morning so should be in Nelson around 5:00.
