While you fullahs were damaging yourselves and bikes I went to French pass to go fishing :D
After ascending mountains and scaling cliffs to get to my chosen spot I discovered the reel was fcuked  it was going fine when I hung it in the shed a couple of years ago. Never mind.... It was a delux day for a ride out there

Sarcasm aside, it is friggen hard to control it with a munted rear shocky. When it starts sliding it just keeps on going till you are facing the other way, and is friggen hard to steer. Yes I know KLRs are hard enough to steer at the best of times but this is ridiculous. Surprised me how hard it is to ride.

New one arrived today, so quite excited.

yeah I noticed that too. I thought it was pretty smart of them to know it was shaky.
That is pretty much the 1st time I have used the G10 for video in the wild. Unfortunately I have to set the zoom then rec so unable to zoom back & forth while shooting.
I will at some stage buy a very cheap video camera to do point & film stuff as I prefer to watch that style of footage than helmetcam style. Unfortunately my old tape cassette video camera isn't compatible with any pcs yonger than 10 years:facepalm:

I watched a short clip today of my contour camera from a ride up the maungatapu with the mighty red KLR getting a good bit of air (just before the shock blew) so will try to post that up.

I'm leaving here at 8:00 tomorrow morning so should be in Nelson around 5:00.

Any Nelsonians keen for a ride somewhere on the 19/20/21st of Dec?
Was thinking Tinline/Mungatapu maybe up to Hori Bay?

Whats the dealo with access to these?

Could be keen for a evening ride to accommodate the 9-5'ers.

Figure I will also head up Golden Bay/Farewell Spit for a look one of the dates above, anything else I should be doing/visiting?

I won't commit as it tends to turn mental around that time.
Maunga is touch & go i think. Someone I know called the caretaker & got the Fulton Hogan boys to open the gate to let them thru during a work week. In the weekend the forest may be open again but there's logging close by.

Hori bay is open all the time.

Have you ridden around the Sounds? Titirangi bay on the Kenepuru Sound is a great ride as is anywhere in Golden bay.

Maungatapu seems too-hard, will leave that one till I am heading north will probably be with a group then and hence worth the effort to organise.

Hori Bay looks like a go-er then.

I have been up to visit Underground last trip I did but I did not venture much into the east side of the sounds, so I am definitely heading up there.
I will probably ferry across on the 19th and head up and camp at one of the DOC campsites up there.

Pete-blen - Those dunes look pretty fun, but a little out of the way and I ride sand/dunes plenty enough up north.

It's a neat ride out to Anatori if you do make it to Golden Bay. Much more to see than just the dunes.

Looking deeper into the future, we are sailing over the weekend before the DB1K. We were thinking about heading out Underground's way that night but I have just discovered that it is the season's 1st open weekend in the Clarence, so we are planning to go in there & camp Sat 12 Jan (weather permitting) If anyone else is keen keep in touch.

Mystery of missing bike owner...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/8019541/Mystery-of-missing-bike-owner

The green and grey Kawasaki KLE, about 450cc, was noticed by a truck driver who pulled over into the layby at the top of the hill to let traffic past. Mr McKenzie said the truck driver noticed skid marks on the road and looked down the bank from the cab of his truck where he noticed the bike some metres down in the bush.

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene where they expected to find the rider of the bike, but found no one in the area. The bike was winched up the bank by the fire service and has now been towed away.

Mr McKenzie said it appeared the bike had been there no longer than overnight. Initial checks showed it had been in Wellington up to at least 5.20pm yesterday, according to city parking records

I've been informed of a couple of tracks in Hira. One from the Teal to Race Track Rd which is a bit rutted at the bottom and another that ends up in the middle of Scout Rd and may need some bush bashing and work to make doable.

There's also this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvkb6IT8HsM) that I need to find the top end of so NordieBro can send the 4wd's down it to clear it out.

They have all existed in the past but may be a bit overgrown...

Wish there wasn't a fire danger thingy up there this weekend :(

Nope. If that's the one I'm thinking of, it takes you up to the start of a tramping track. Was overgrown with gorse at the trig but now cleared - or was a year or so ago.

This one is before that and goes down to the left into the valley...

The track now goes 13m north from the southern skid.

An MT21 on the front and a Shinko 244 on the rear. Just got back from a 430km ride to scrub them in. MT21 is fine as usual, but the shinko i dunno about. For the first 100kms on the tar it felt like it was sliding like on gravel, but then when I got to some gravel it wouldn't rear wheel steer at all contrary to what Nordie says about them. Just have to get used to it.

BY the way the Mackley is easily crossable. Ask me how I know?

im finding the 244 under hard breaking will squirm into a small slide on the seal and with the light arse end of the XR she'll steer round corners on the metal, now that im used to it im finding it predictable and pretty good alround

crappy cell pic

Anyway before I fall asleep in the sun. After mrs woodman went to work at midday my xmas chores miraculously finished so I jumped on the warhorse, gassed up and headed to the Iron Bridge to see (A)whether the mackley was crossable, and (B) whether the ride can be done easily in an afternoon. The river was as shallow as a shallow thing so I crossed it and chatted briefly to a man who was having a Speights by the river with his wife. The track is a bit more cut up than last time but still easily passable. The Buller Gorge between Westport and Inangahua was lovely as usual and I followed a guy on a ducati most of the way until he got away from me. Gassed up in Murch and was home by 5:30.

Way better than Xmas chores.

A day would be better, then you cold do the Porika as well, and stop to look at the scenery, and ride up to the tv tower thing and be astounded at the awsomeness of the views. It is no harder than the Maungatap, but there a a few uphill (depending on direction) switchbacks that could get nasty, but all low speed stuff. Schmiddy will eat it up.

It only took me half an hour longer (3 hours) getting to Westport via the Mackley than it did on the tar home.(2.5 hours).I hardly ever stop when riding solo.

Was a good ride though Moles/Rainbow..
The Moles road is better than I have seen it..
very fast..Maybe to fast for some.. 2 tin boxes
over banks " only the 2nd day"..1 van with a hippy paint job that
had rolled down a 30 metre bank/slope " bet that
was a wild ride" & a little hack back that went over
a 10m vertical drop..
There was some guy in there on a Harley fitted
with ADV tyres..
We left Hamner at 3pm heading though the Rainbow
in windy overcast wheather.. didn't strike any rain till
after the caretakes.. but not a lot really.. had
managed to stay dry till we got to the last ford just
before the seal on the Rainbow access road..
yer I dumped the XR in it.. normaly no biggy But
this time I managed to get my leg stuck under the
bike.. "Pinned no wiggleing out" no fun laying in a river
while people decide it's better to get a camera out/take
a pic before helping to lift the bike before yer drown..Padmei:angry:

Done a milage check if anyones planing a ride though..
Blen via taylor pass , Moles to Hanmer = 201kms
Hanmer to Rainbow turn off "St Arnads" = 112kms

Cheers JC,

Great trip yesterday, bike has well and truly been run in and tested for the Dusty, never done the Molesworth track before, shame to see what looked like a Toyota Starlet off the track, looked a bit nasty too:( Very happy with the MT21's tyres, shame about the new supposingly waterproof Galaxy S2 phone case, water got in the case, phone appeared buggered, all has come good though;)

I will be Marshalling at the Port Races Tomorrow, hopefully see some interesting racing with the inclement weather forecast, great day out, especially with Josh Coppins floating the back end around in the Super Motards, could be his last year, so here's your chance to see some really impressive riding!

Some Ozzie bloke.
Josh knows the speed the Aprilias have and that one was a VBD550 vs his YZF450.
If that's true, they only made about 30 Factory Aprilia Van Den Bosch reps and only 3 got to Oz.
Carbon and titanium everything.

About 77hp

Not the best surface to hang it out on. Some corners changed the chip coarseness half way. Not ideal if you're wanting a nice consistent slide.

Are you being fricking sarcy????
He spent the last half of the front straight backing it in. I was a bit disappointed with the numbers of supermotos seemed down on last year. It does seem to be a bit of a younger mans choice - maybe it's the future of racing?

Jen do you want to pass on to Nick & the crew that the commentator was awesome & the speaker setup heaps better than previous years. Also it would be quite cool if there were a few haybales or similar stacked up a bit back from the track on the end of the main straight to sit/ stand on as the fence makes it really hard to see past - maybe hit up a scaffolding co for some makeshift seats?

Also is the track to the top of Mt Pat open to the public or do i need to get permission / key from someone.:blank:

Any help with these tracks would be appreciated unless one of the locals wants to show me the way :wait:

The nelson guys will help you wth the Munga... its bit of a trick to get there now...

Mt Pat.... You need to take the North bank Rd "turn right from nelson" just before the Waiau bridge comeing into Renwick..
Mt pat road is a fair way up.. its the first side Rd on yer right after you hit the gravel.." a few 100 metres of gravel"
follow the signs to lake chalice.. when you get to the Lake Chalice car park keep going to the Mt Pat summit...
No key or premission needed....

Oh, also, the Maungatapu is a weekend only ride, as the Sharlands Creek gate is shut during the week.

This should be a map from Sharlands to the Dam.

The sharlands creek gate, is that the gate that you have shown the bypass to ???

Meaning that it could possibly be done on a week day.

The Sharlands Creek gate is just off the Maitai Rd and is un-bypassable.
At the caretakers, the gate there is sometimes shut and you can go around the paddock.
In either case, you go behind the gum trees to get past the gate leading down to the dam.

Nope. Big, bugger off boulders replaced that tree...
Down at the base of the Wangas, they've blocked off the entrance to the Duckpond with rocks too.
Although a bit of fossicking in the river would enable more rocks to be placed to fill the gaps and possibly make a ramp...

Me and a mate are headed your way to check out some of this fantastic riding country of yours early March 2013.
Looking for some cheap accommodation for approx 10 days and anyone who's keen to show us around.
Any recommendations or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Was thinking maybe a cabin in a camp ground or something similar.

Ok, so my buddy and I are heading your way on the 15th of Feb and both our XT660Rs need new rubber.
It gets pretty damp up here in the far north so we tend to use a more knobby style tyre like the Metzler Karoo or the Dunlop D606.
The bikes will be trailered to Wellington and from Picton we plan to do roads like Molesworth, Rainbow etc and more of the same further south around Alexandra.
Having just chopped out a set of Karoo’s real quick I’m leaning towards D606s this time.
Can any of you who run 600cc plus adventure bikes please let me know what tyres your running down there?

MT21 rears on gravel aren't the best, unless you are a rear wheel steerer, & then their longevity is... v.short. Mitas E09's are a better bet & will last 6-7,000 kms.

We're baaaaack!
The Nelson side is nice and rocky, the Marlborough side more open and both are getting undergrowth pushing in from the sides.

Met a couple of guys on a DR650 and Tiger from The Bay who are going over to South America soon. They'd just been through the Rainbow and Molesworth.

Apparently, snow on Jacks Pass last night.
They camped in the St James and it was... Chilly...

Oh and as I didn't get a photo, Padmei didn't get stuck under his bike at all.

It did however take us 50 min to get to the caretakers :D

Frick me that was a work out. What happens when your heart rate reaches 380bpm?

You know I enjoy riding thru there if we're not trying to go up or down ridculously slippery stupid tracks. Luckily I didn't fall off.......much

Good to catch up with other bikers - esp those with the means & time to do overseas adventures.

I was feeling really blah this morning & believe it or not, feeling off riding. It could have been my ride back from the bach on Tuesday thru the flooding cold torrential rain- that lil blast renewed my passion.

If it is wrm again tomm I may go out again - unless my body shuts down

As we plan to try and stay off the black stuff as much as possible we have decided on Dunlop D606s.
Hopefully after the trip our tyres will still be ok to head into winter with up here where it gets rather damp.
Look out for a couple of old farts on XTs from the 13th of February onwards.

Thanks Pete, Made it to the top last thursday. Was sunny at Renwick, then about half way up i hit the cloud. By the time i reached the carpark at the top for lake Chalice it was hailing and i could not see 20 feet in front of me.
The last 7 kms over the rock slides to the top were pretty scary in those conditions on my own. I didnt hang round at the top for more than 30 seconds.

Thanks for the Map Nordie, managed to find my way around the gate at Sharlands Rd ( after we had been turned away by the road workers on the Valley Rd ) and then just sort of followed my nose ( without getting lost ) until i came out of the forest to a sign that said Mangatapu track closed. Knew i was in the right place then.
A quick detour around the wire rope and i was on my way again. Saw some recent bike tracks on the gound, probably from you and Padders.

Blenhiem to Hanmer via Taylor pass/Molesworth = 210km
Hanmer to St Arnads via Rainbow = 120km
St Arnads to Blenhiem = 100km

A round trip for me from Blenheim with out going into Hamner or St Arnads

Didn't make it to Pelorus.

Cruised the road to the dam (20mins as opposed to 50min the other day) and played on the side tracks to the Maungatapu summit, clearing branches and trimming stuff on the way.

Quite a lot of good sized loose rocks on the surface to keep you on your toes.

All the side tracks on the way up are easily navigable.

Was just entering the Corkscrew on the way back down when Padders and 2 mates rode past, so I had to turn around and go back up again. Rude not to really.

Link road goes in on the right just past the Hori Bay turnoff heading from Nelson. It joins onto Mt Duppa road somewhere and comes out by a bridge just as you start heading up the Rai saddle-ish. Some success, some failures.
Some of the tracks are overgrown enough that your feet get pulled of the pegs and if your riding in a deep wheel rut, it's not optimal to have both feet dragging behind you, banging off the rear wheel. Under the trees, it's quite dry and powdery. Almost sandy. Fresh knobs would have been useful...

Found a new track that I didn't know about and failed on a couple of others I did.

Only got lost once.

Very, very rocky in some parts.

The 705’s acquitted themselves well.

Line choice was critical. Some sections, like dropping down from Isolation to the Gun Club Valley, would be almost impossible the other direction.

The GoPro remote worked very well, except that instead of pausing it, I need to turn it off between sections to extend the battery life. The camera sucks the battery dry at the same rate when recording or paused. I ran out 2/3 of the way through a really cool section :(

So went all the way back wondering if the gun club gate was still open - it was-phew.

I'm gonna have to stay off the bike for a few weeks as the last 2 rides I have been on which are usually excellent have felt like hard work & not as enjoyable. Any one else start to feel 'over' riding? it may be caused by this excellent long dry summer.
