If the gun club gate is shut, you can back up a little and go through the gate in the fence line on the corner, into the paddock, over the creek and come out at the concrete ford at the entrance to the carpark.
The condition of the tracks makes for quite physical riding at the moment.

. Any one else start to feel 'over' riding? it may be caused by this excellent long dry summer.
Yup, bizarrely looking forward to winter to give me some enthusiasm.
Mind you, if it doesn't rain here or on the Coast I am tentatively thinking of a blast through the Mackley next Sunday. Haven't been over from the Westport end so maybe a nice roadride to Westport for a coffee and gas(for those with inadequacy issues in the tank department), then over the Mackley then home, maybe with a coffee in Murchison and possibly if time and enthusiasm permits do the Porika.
Very set in jelly at the moment so will keep posted etc.

I dunno, I had a pretty cruisy ride out to French pass on Sunday, very un-fizzicle, except for climbing round cliffs to go fishing :D

As Hira, Moutere and Wairoa forests are closed due to fire danger, I'm going to have a go at getting from the Appleby Bridge to the Wai-iti and possibly Trass Valley tomorrow.
The water levels are the lowest they'll be for a while and the water is only wet, not freezing and wet...

My body is also starting to seize up, so may have to take it easy tomorrow.

Vic is keen but not this or next weekend...
2 1/2 hrs of riding on river rocks is taking it's toll...
But I can say, with no word of a lie, that trials tyres and steering dampers are fcukin fantastic for rocky river riding :2thumbsup:clap::headbang:
705's would have got as far, but may have some naps in the river on the way as there was some slippery shit in there and once I stopped fighting every rock deflection through the bars and let the damper do it's dampery shit, my arms didn't cop nearly as much abuse.
I had to stop at the Quail Rd Bridge as I was getting too knackered but it looks like it's possible to get at least the 1.2km further to the Wai-iti Valley Bridge before Spooners...

Try it on a klr.........
I would rather eat my own eyeballs, it was bad enough on the 350...
But you've got that special shock that makes the KLR handle like a KTM200...
Would have been good to see the KLR doing it though...
You would have been sweating like a bastard...

Decided to go to Bulwer this arvo, good ride but about halfway between French Pass and Bulwer i stopped for a rest and motion sickness liedown:facepalm::facepalm:. Was eating a muesli bar and looking at my new front disc that was installed last weekend when I noticed that the inner pad was down to the metal and was starting to munt the disc:weep:. Yes they were new pads too, so something is wrong if they only last 300kms.
Anyway aborted the mission and headed home using the back brake only, on possibly NZs windiest roads. Couple of sideways entries, but otherwise pucker free.
Good ride though and fantastic scenery. Will look into brake issue when I can be assed, must be a caliper issue.

Starting to get used to the bike fishtailing on gravel again, and powersliding when cornering on the seal. Must get a new back tyre too :D .
Nothing happened to the bike.

I'm still tempted by that "loop track" at the Rarangi end with the sign saying 4wd's are ok...

It wasn't dodgy!
Well, it was dodgy to ride, but it was the right track to link the old 4-cross track to Isolated Spur Rd. Next time I'm going further :scooter:
The TT was geared a bit high too. Seemed OK for most stuff, but cough stalled it a few times so dropped it back from a 15t to 14t. Much nicer...

Went up the right branch of th Wairoa Gorge today. Very overgrown, but passable. Turned back about 3/4 of the way up because there was a 50/50 chance of the bike sliding into a ditch and I couldn't be assed lifting it out.
The creeks on the way in were deeper than I thought and with bigger slippier rocks than I remember, but got through okay, but on the way out, me and the bike took a rest in the middle of a creek. The motor sucked in a bit of water but started eventually blowing clouds of steam. Rode a few more metres and got stuck in some deep water with big round slippery boulders and took another dunk. The bike didn't suck in any water this time but I was soaked from head to toe. Then did the Ben Nevis loop to dry out.
Good wee ride, and I have my mojo back.

In Hira there's a small track joining the Chings Highway/4-cross track area to Isolated Spur Rd.
It's marked as motorbikes only on the AFM map. So naturally I've been trying to find it...
3 times now...
I've found 2 different ways to get to the same point which looks to be the right track by the map, well away from Chings Highway and the wrong direction for the 4X track, but has metal grating under the grass crossing a small gully, which usually means MTB's
I think I need to try dropping down off Isolated Spur Rd and carry a copy of the map with me...
I ended up doing a cool MTB track that loops out and back to the 4X skid site.
Looks like it doesn't get used much. Took about half an hour of cutting gorse, blackberry, pine and another green thing I don't know the name of to get around.
Every time I think I'm going past the comfort level of Shinko 705's, they surprise me :scooter:
If it rained however :nya:

Looks like the loop I did was the bottom loop extension of Change Highway.
They've got a waypoint on the Nelson MTB club site that matches up with my track nicely.
I may have to (shudder) MTB down Chings to get a gps track to confirm where it actually goes.

Doh!
Took a photo of the map on my phone, compared it with my gps track, worked out where the track should start, found it, it was very overgrown and blocked by some big old rotton logs which means it's been blocked for a long time.
Then I got home and realised I should have turned left half a K earlier to get onto the correct track and that one would have a slightly higher chance of success :pinch:
Found the limits of traction on Shinko 705's too. Quite a few times...
Wet, mossy rocks - Nope.
Rubbly, soft dirt climbs - Nope.
Wet pine needles, wet tree roots and slop (Mungatooks stylee) - Nope.
But they did get a hell of a lot further that I'd expected :woohoo::drinkup:

Ok my plan is to do the laidback on the DRZ. i will prob be trailering with Steve & his Wr.
I will be leaving here around 830ish. if you guys are coming I can bring gear with me in car if needbe.
Wheeled the DRZ out & started it for the first time in months. gas is pissing out of the carb somewhere. i had a looksie & looks to be leaking above the gasket but couldn't see what it is coming out of. i'll just keep the tap turned off when stopped & take extra fuel. i hate working on these fricking carbs after the BMW where they are stuck out in the wings.
Luckily when I took the tank off i noticed the throttle sensor was loose & fell off so i tightened that back. i tried testing the resistance as per the manual but couldn't see any change - I'll take it for a ride down the driveway & see if it's ok. better than doing the lawns:niceone:
frick me it's loud. if I decide to keep it after this winter I will def have to find a stock pipe (cheap, very very cheap

Well, today I found that trials tyres have more grip than 705's. Who would have thought?
Only thing is, I need a 13t front to get the gearing low enough, but that'll let the chain chew through the swingarm slider...
The link track I've been trying to find doesn't really exist anymore.
I tried walking a little of it but the windfall and regrowth is too extreme.
The red line is from last week, and the blue line is today.
281037
I did find some cool old tracks in the process though. Spent about half an hour cutting branches/gorse/trees out of the way to make them navigable.
Better go out and put the 15t on the TT for tomorrow...

Just had a phone call...
"Ki-ora bro, is it at the same place in Lamb Valley?"
Nope, new track in Tadmor.
"Where's that?"
Through Tap and left over the brid...
"Oh fcuk, the bike's fallen over! Gotta go!"
Weird, wonder who that could have been?
wonder how many times the bike will fall over by the end of the day?
we will start a sweepstake. Winner gets nothing.
My guess is 9.
Gonna do a cruisy St Arnaud, Porika, Braeburn, matatakatikatikati valley and the bit at the end of that which the name eludes me now, but ends at the sign post with lots of signs on it, then back again.
It will do.
Edit, Maruia saddle, saw it on a sign post.

Shame about you back Padders.
My ride today was very uneventful, Porika, Braeburn matakatikati, maruia pass, all lovely. Bumped into James on the Braeburn and stopped for a wee chinwag. Oh and there was some scenery. No pic, cameras fcuked.
The shinko 700s were bloody good on and off road, and the 16 tooth sprocket is a keeper. Very relaxed on the road and still got up the steep side of the Porika with no hassles at all, in fact it seemed easier.

That's one reason I like riding slower. Easier on the body. No, it's not that I'm just slow. Some people don't lap me on my 1st lap of x-country races.
I could keep the speed up today for about 1-2mins at a time but then the arms/hands couldn't handle it.
On my last lap, about 3 corners in, I went for the clutch and brakes and my fingers had curled around the grips with cramp. I had to pry them off the bars one at a time
Took a couple of km to come almost right.

Speedometer means an instrument in a motor vehicle that continuously indicates to the driver the forward speed of the vehicle in either kilometres per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). For clarification, this definition does not include the speed provided by a GPS system.

It has a back light that apparently you can toggle on or off so it runs when the wheel starts moving. I'm pretty sure my WOF tester wouldn't worry. I want to get an Acewell later on for the BMW but there is about $250 difference so i can wait.

I can't comment on the 20% uprated with knowing the brand name of the stator
In general, the DRZ400 stator can be prone to failure based on the wiring and connectors being "sufficient" but not overly heavy duty. The rectifier/regulator connector is prone to shorting like this:
http://i575.photobucket.com/albums/ss194/toddski190587/2000%20DRZ400S/100_1463.jpg
This is a good article for diagnosis and the "free power mod" which essentially rewires a section that is a weak link, the mod not only improves robustness/reliability but also increases output to the battery by .5 volts

I haven't had any personal experience with the company RM Stator (http://www.rmstator.com/) so can't comment. The results online are varied, there are many cases online of failure however many cases of people saying they are reliable. ElectoSport also has a large number of both failure/success cases and they have a fairly good reputation. The reality is, a stator is an electronic device typically prone to failure at some point, aftermarket stators that increase output "can" jeopardise reliability further.
I always go for OEM, it costs more but you know they are of a high standard with a solid backup. But, if you are looking for more output aftermarket is the only option. I have an ElectroSport stator here (rated as a 40% increase) but have not fitted as the OEM is currently supplying all the power I need. A case of, don't fix it if it ain't broke
I am interested to hear how you get along with the RM Stator stator

Hear where you are coming from regarding OEM parts vs aftermarket, what I have read from various sources all seem to say the standard 200watt stator is under powered when you have a few electrical goodies on your bike? Anyway, I bet the OEM is now manufactured in China, it's just a matter of QC controls in place.
Just my 2 cents worth....

If i ever get down from here, I'm going to head up Sharland's Creek tomorrow. Going to try some knobblies on the TT. There's some bits I want to try that are a bit to soft for the trials tyres. Also the knobblies are much lower profile, which is the equivalent of a tooth smaller on the front than the mt43.
Haven't ridden it since the Tadmor laid back on the 7th of April!

WTF are they talking about with the free power mod? i can't follow that article very well. Do you just replace the red & black plug from the RR or do you run the wires back to the battery?
Batt went flat today so checking to make sure the connections are all ok. I found the stator plug half undone from when I was cleaning the bike.
The way I read this is cut the wires about 4" from the Rectifier and do away with the connection plug all together and do a soldered joint with some upgraded cable straight to the battery?
Did you sell your bike Craig?

I have had a few inquiries, usually on the last day the ad expires:rolleyes: I will put it back on when I get back from raro. It's winter so I can't see anything moving at the mo.
As for the power mod did you solder 3 wires together- new one straight to the battery, & existing ones from the RR & harness?

I never did the mod to mine, it is only the two 12v dc wires coming from the RR (Rectifier) that need to to be beefed up. Have you checked your charging system?

Finally got out of the ceiling and got the knobblies on the TT and went up Sharland's.
Wanted to see if the knobs were better/worse in various situations.
Short answer...
Not once did I find myself thinking "I'm glad I've got knobblies on".
They were inferior in almost all situations. Even in a loose uphill that I thought they would at least let me get further than before.
Hopefully going back tomorrow with the MT43's back on to compare...
Did find a new track though...

yep charged the battery up, soldered & ran a couple of red & black wires in parallel with the original wires straight to the battery & buttoned up. Battery reading >13v drops to 12.8 with key on, started first push after 2 secs & voltage went to just over 14v over idle. All good.
From reading around, the DRZ' have a leak from the trip meter & the skinny lil battery doesn't like hanging around for more than a couple of weeks without a battery tender on it.
So all good in the hood.
i went for a ride yesterday. Over the Whangas to top of Rai saddle & back. Just enough to feel the cool breeze thru the scarf & remind me not to ride the Whangas again till Spring & the gravel has been swept up. The ride yesterday reminded me of the time a few of us went silly going over there in Winter. On that 1st right hand corner where you can see up the road far enough to pass my back wheel hit a bit of ice while passing a few slow cars. I felt bit of a slippy slip - apparently the guy also passing behind me did the legs out wobble dance for about 50 metres. You learn to button off a bit after that:whistle:

The 3 guys I regularly ride with now all use trials rears. Glen and Andrew both seem to manage to get along at a fair old clip on them.
I rode Andrews ktm300 with trials tires at both ends up a very rocky river bed yesterday and it was like it was glued to the ground.

Hi,
So what are they like on the road?

Most trials tyres are a very soft compound, which gets hot at highway speed and then sheds knobs off (photo of a second hand IRC after 400km)
However the Pirelli MT43 is DOT certified and rolls smoothly on tarseal with some tyre howl. I used it on the Dusty Butt route and they wear from the rear edge (like a front knobbly) and probably last 2-2,500km. All trials tyres are tall, raising seat height and lowering the gearing (also needed to add 2 links to chain to push wheel back to stop rubbing on shock flap)
I normally changed non DOT knobbies at 8mm/1,000km and the best value knobby is a Kenda 760 DOT which got 1500 km.

The MT43 is really tall. about 5cm taller than a Dunlop comp trials tyre.
"Proper" trials tyres are, well, freaky on the road, whereas the MT43 is no problem even at 8psi.
I just did the same loop as yesterday and the only place I found the trials tyre lacking was steep loose downhills.
Everywhere else, it was head and shoulders above the knobs I used.
Far less dabbing and much more drive.
The rear has been on and off the bike since March 2012 and has done about 3,500km. Probably about half life.
Today was a 2-pac Moro day.

2 opposing rimlocks on the rear so I don't have to add 80g of lead to balance them.
But off-road, I do air them down to 14f/12r on the 115kg TT and 20f/18r on the DR.
On road, 24f/26r max on both. Any higher, especially in the front, and it feels like there's no give at all.
Gravel, 18f/16r on the TT and 20f/18r on the DR.

I'm doing a ride trip in Australia in 2014. I have a fresh DRZ400 arriving at the end of this week which I am building up over the next few months exactly the same as my current one to ship over.
I'll be over there riding for at least 2 to 3 months, I've been toying with dates and really wanted to include the 2014 Australasian Safari Adventure Tour but the dates are quite a way off the May, June, July months I'm planning to ride. I'll be making my way up to the Northern Territory and aiming to miss the the humid/muggy period. The dates and concept of this ride interest me. I'll keep in touch, whether it be catching up for this ride or joining you on a leg along the way I'll be keen to catch up either way should our dates/routes cross.
Cheers

I was thinking just a cruisey ride out to Waitata or Bulwer, nothing too gnarly. 2pm till 5pm. I'm slightly knackered.
Apparently the correct technique for steep hills is to pin the throttle and if (when) the front lifts, feather the clutch.
Fcuk that.
You're more likely to make it up, but you're also more likely to flip it and/or launch it into the bushes...
My self preservation gene is far too strong for that...

Heaps up Sharlands, the carpark was chokka. 3 guys were trying and failing to get up the first section of Hurricane Hill
Just the one 2-smoke Berg up the Maungatapu though.
Just after the video, there's an uphill 90* right (just before the last pylon track on the right before the summit) that took me 5 minutes to get around...
The DR went well, better on the open gravel than the technical bits (went up via Maitai Face), need to tweak the carb as it's holding the revs a bit long though.
The Shinko 244 rear is crap. Was sliding on everything. There's a good 2mm of tread left so I don't know what's up with it. I need to get some more 705's...

Oh yeah, why didn't anyone tell me the Maitai Rd is now open again...

The EnduroCross is on again on Sunday over Tapawera way. NordieBro assures me there's no logs, tyres, creeks, sandpits, concrete pipes or hills...

Great weather for weeks and the day of the final round of the South Island Enduro Series...
Pissing rain, winds and fog so thick you could cut it with a knife. Should be brilliant up there.
Posted from my armchair, drinking a coffee with a cat curled up asleep on my lap.

I am back, finally have enough cash to fix and rego a bike.
And........
Then the main drain on the house failed and backed up down our hallway......sheesh. Ground subsided on the sunless side of the house when we got flooded. Have vids and pics of it but insurance peeps not interested. Expensive.
But my 450 has now got a spring for my weight and I can point the headlight at the road when riding. Shims will need a check after my massive 89 hrs riding and the clutch slave seal failed as all ktm's do.
Whats up or down bla bla bla:yawn:

I remember you. Didn't you used to ride a bike?
Was it the 990, 650 or 450 you kept getting stuck under?

Insurance covers the house, it's the EQC or some such outfit that covers outside the walls. Call Civil Defense, they'll be able to tell you.

Prophetic statement as it turns out...
At least I finished higher than my race number...

As long as it isn't snowing, 2up would be sweet.
Only dodgy bit would be the climb to Horse Bridge.
If it is snowing, then they could help push.
