Do you think they should have an adventure bike class??

Must have road legal tyres and no trailers, e.g. must be ridden to the track. It would be fun eh?
I think we would all see how good klrs really are.

Got yours airbourne? Going over jumps is like a sumo wrestler on a trampoline.

Got a video of me jumping the Klr. getting it in the air is easy, its the landing that is difficult.

KLR with full tank = 205kgs
Me the rider = 110kgs
Landing after jumping a bit higher than I'd planned
Priceless

Thats when the rear sub frame came loose.

Was there any "good" reason for closing the Manga in the first place? Wanting to know as checking out access to various parts of the DB1k route. See Rainbow closed till the 28 Dec thread.

Anybody know if there is any forestry work around the Sherry River Road. I'll be hitting town on Monday the 22nd and hope to check out Sherry River plus other tracks in the area. Seems from your guys reports that Mt Arthur, Jacobs Ladder, etc are all open at the moment.

Cheers R

I think the only reason for closing Mangatapu was to do some track maintenance and repair some water damage. It's definitely been improved to what it was 3 weeks ago, but still a bit rough.
I know they logged around Sherry River/Dry weather roads earlier in the year, so most of it has been cleared now, and road is packing down well again. Haven't been there in last couple of months, so would prob be worthwhile having another look down there just in case.

I'm keen to to do something like Bronte Rd, Old Coach Rd, Rosedale Rd, Jacobs Ladder, Sunday Creek, Sherry River Rd then Christian Creek and back via Wakefield Woodstock Rd and Wairoa Gorge Rd on the 28th. Ride is partly a checking out the DB1k route and partly checking out Christian Creek Rd which looks like a bit of fun.

Any of you fellas from up this way care to join me?

Yep, Christian Creek is fun, quite overgrown in parts, but a wicked track. Some trees down over the track (last time I was there you could ride under/aound them) and access is only one way (private forestry road, locked gate at Wangapeka end. Access only from Sherry River road.
I'd love to join ya but only in the afternoon, I'm working until 2.00pm....maybe I could meet you in Dovedale or Tapawera and do the last half with you. If it gets dark it'll be good practice for the Dusty.

If you accidentally add in Panic Mac to Spooners and then loop through to Tap on the seal it'd be even more betterer :D

And then I head over to Mangarakau (on the bike) for a few days with Jenni (in the campervan) :D

I'm guessing that a 9am start is about early enough as I recon that we will travel about 300km. Where do we all meet up, Mapuaish or the intersection of Bronte and SH60 or somewhere else? Hopefully you locals have a good suggestion?

I know a little about this part of the country but don't know which of the rd's through the forestry are restricted access (seems not all are - Sherry Rd case in point), so if anybody else has any good ideas for Tui back to Nelson ish let me know. I'm looking at getting from Tui to SH6 via Donald Creek Rd and Elvys Rd or out to the south of the Hope Saddle via Big Bush Drive. Also looking for ideas for Kohatu back to Richmond (Nordie's Panic Mac to Spooners?)

When we set off from Sunday Creek Rd at Thorpe, the rear felt very definitely spongey bouncey flat-like... bugger.

Decided to dawdle up the road to the next driveway with shade... was Ryan's 'lations of all people/places. Whipped the tyre off, no drama with a hot tyre. The tube was rubbed through, the tyre had split internally and the split had chaffed the tube. Put the spare tube in with a section of the old tube wrapped around it to protect it. Lost my mtb pump somewhere, I had it in my hand when I packed my bag, it's not here at home so whonose?? Will have to buy one like R's, it worked a treat. Took us 30-ish minutes to fix.

So then we swapped bikes and took Pigeon Valley Rd to Wakefield, thence buggered off home. Tyre fixing used up any drinking time, we both had to hot-foot it home from there.

Thanks for a great day out, fellahs.

PS WOody said he was going to peel off home before Wakefield.

Thanks for the day fullas. Checked the tool box when I got home and I'm only missing two tools. Thanks for the tool scouting Topo. Might have to investigate one of those magic KTM tyre leavers. Changed enough tyres myself by now that I must have saved up enough for one.

If anybody wants the the GPS track log from today send me a PM with your email addy (already got yours Nordie :D). Definatly lots of potential between the Clark Valley and Tui etc. Big Bush Road needs further exploring as a ADV route instead of the Hope saddle. One day I'll have all the good bits of gravel along the general alignment of the inland highway between Chch and NN plotted.

Thought I would ride over the maungatap to Pelorous and back today to check if the pies really were microwaved.
The ride started off good until I got stuck in a traffic jam(yes a traffic jam) behind several 4wds and a quad. talked to a guy on a BMW 800 I think who was going the other way I think for the first time, who was really feeling the weight. Anyway I got passed the 4wds only to lose it and slide into a ditch and then sat and watched some of them go past me again. Thanks to the young guy on a classic rm? that helped me out of said ditch. Just before the top I had an occaision to use the rear brake and realised that I had exposed yet another KLR weakness and had broken the rear brake bracket. Their is a silver lining though as I got some good practice using front only on the way home.
Does anyone know where I can get a stronger bracket in NZ or OZ as my usual klr supplier in the states is out of stock and I am giving myself a coupla days off shortly to do some long day rides and I want to use my rear brake. I will weld this up at a stretch, but honestly they really are made of shit.

I was wheelin' my now-for-sale Ducati out of the garage (wearin' my Samoan safety boots, a pair of NZ's finest jandals of course) and ripped my big toe nail right off catching it between the concrete and Ducati side stand. Did I scream? Well, no actually, but I did go kinda quiet for a while and broke out in a cold sweat. Mumble, mumble, mumble..........pass me the feckin Band Aids.

Ohhh bugger, that's cringe inducing even from the safety of a computer screen :(

I've still got some black under my big toenail from a wooden post incident back in Feb last year.

After very little thought the "missus" and i have decided to do an overnighter to Anatori on the 1st/2nd feb.
If anyone wants to join us there's plenty of tent sites for everyone, and some great roads to be had on the way (might break out a few local tracks on the way through:woohoo:).

Plenty of fun for those two-up as well, should make for an interesting long weekend

Went out for a nice short ride yesterday with Topo, around 135km in the hills of Nelson. Bloody hot and dry, but good fun.
Went thru the forestry roads up Sharlands, Teal Saddle thru to top of Whangamoas, then Mt Duppa and the grand finale was out to Hori Bay which is normally closed due to logging ops. Wicked views from the top up there, sorry no pics this time.
Topo's "loaner" SL230 performed well in his hands, it gobbled up the terrain easily. Plenty of dust, and bees. Got 2 in my helmet at different times, but no stings. Sweet!

A nice slow cruise through the Maunga to finish off the day :D

Looks like my handling issues were a combination of...
Steering head bearing, 7-8kg in the bag on the back, 26psi in the rear (I set them to 20f/22r this morning), exhaustion, me riding like a nana again :D

I'm knackered...

Well that was fun fun fun in the sun sun sun!! :D Up from the Havelock side has an initial steep loose shaley pinch, after that there are erosion ditches big enough to swallow Pacific island nations, but it gets easier the closer you get to the top. From there, left goes down to the lookout point on Qn Charlotte Dr, easy dirt road with harsh contour ditches. Straight on heads back down to the tar via a fairly gnarly rutted overgrown track, steep at times. We didn't come back up this one, but it would be challenging with all the ruts.

Thanks for the company gents. Next time, we should aim for cooler weather and a bit more time. The now-mandatory high guard conversion will mean fewer stops to extract the low front guard from its novel position forward of the forks :buggerd:.

A nice cruise over the Whangamoas to get home with bugger all traffic, it's been a looooooooong time since I've taken the tar rather than the Maungatapu. 21psi in the rear was a bit squidgy, but a few clicks more compression on the shock reduced the 'squat and push' significantly.

And yeah, my forearms are sore from the long downhill/s. :baby:

Headed off up to Anatori and Anaweka River yesterday, tried to make it to Kahurangi Point lighthouse but foiled by deep river crossing at Big River….now why do they call it that???
The river seems to be fordable on foot, but due to sandy entry and 3-5ft deep, it was a no-goer on the bike. Had a great blast along the beach anyway, but easy to lose perspective of speed and terrain on the sand, ya gotta watch those water channels at speed.
Great fun playing in the dunes as well, easy as on the firmer ones but as soon as the sand gets too soft, ya gotta sit way back, try and keep the front light and steer by leaning. Keep the throttle tapped and hang on. Buried the bike a few times after slowing too much, now I know how those Dakar guys feel. Once again, easy to lose perspective of the sand undulations on a sunny day, so bright and the glare does nothing for picking good lines thru the dunes.
Stopped at the Mangarakau Cafe on the way home, highly recommend them, good coffee and eats. Thanks for the tip there Topo. They say hi to you as well Fran....glad you're mobile again.
Bloody good fun in all, I was totally rooted last night though, 450km return, on a 30deg plus day. Too hot for this boy……I had to jump in the Mot river on the way home.

Yep, no worries until you get onto the soft sand, up from the high tide line. Stay off the dunes and you'll be sweet. Venture into them only if you like diggin or are a brave man with the throttle, hurtling a 200kg beastie at full noise into the unknown.
I couldn't get over how f...ked up my depth perception was, I totally missed a couple of drop offs and could easily have endo'd the bike....instead I just buried it when I buttoned off. Maybe it was the white sand and bright sunlight, could be better on a cloudy day.

We're staying in Westport at parents of friends but unfortunately have a full house & there is no lawn - just gravel making up the rest of the subdivided section:(

The campground at westport is pretty good if you want to tent. If you want to stay at Reefton I can cruise thru early Sat morning:scooter:

Big River track is only about 25k's from the center of Reefton to the end of the track.

Welllllllllllll..........

Rang farmer thurs night and said we'd be coming through sat afternoon
He said "no worries cobber, I'll be working up that way, just come through the gate and you'll see me.
Message on my phone sat morn from Padmei "can't come straight to Reefton from Westport, they've got the road closed(who woulda thought)going down to Grey then back up.
I left a message for him saying "we'll come down to Ahaura and meet you and we'll do Napoleons first"
Head south and catch up with Padmei en-route, go to Napoleons hill access "faaark, gates locked, can't see any farmer.Ring farmer but there's dodgy cell coverage so got hung up on.
Me "Yous fullahs and fulla'es stay here, I'll go and see em"
Cruize down to nearest house (which is the wrong one), while I was there a bike comes down the road, turns round and goes back.
I think they must have caught up with the cocky so head back up, nope, no farmer so I head back down the road to find the right house.
Pull into the next house to yak with a farmer in his dressing gown and work boots giving directions to the wife about rounding up sheep.(hard to keep a straight face during that encounter)
Dressing gown farmer "Nah mate, Malcome lives about 2/3 of the way back to town down a side road, in a house with a windmill outside".
Fang it back down the road, up the side road to a house with a windmill. Nope nobody home, ring number, I can hear the phone ringing in the house so it must be the right place, aaaaaah wellllll
Back to the others, still waiting at the gate, talkin shite about bikes and stuff and generally lazing around.
Me "looks like it's a f/up fullahs and fullah'es, shall we flag it and just go to Big river, come back and do this one another time".
Nods all round. Off to Big river.

Wishing you'd asked for the short version now Woody ?

Apparantly Denniston is much easier than Big River.
Also as you're coming out of Big River and get to the sign at the start hang a left and it takes you out to the gravel pit on the other side of the Reefton Saddle. Easy to get down ok but a bit gravelly to get up on bigger bikes.

Marks and Struan's "wrong turn" down Napoleon's Hill and out to the bridge at Waipuna? is where the 4WD's go in usually.

All according to Shane...

Not sure about that. The Mackley is a bit of a mongrel to cross i.e. walking bikes and there are some pretty steep climbs out of the Mackley and the next valley on to the Plateau. The climbs aren't too hard, more Altimarlock than Porika. Still nothing like that on Big River.

have seen some on KLR's on adv rider somewhere. They are just tubes that you take one end off, (sorta like a poster tube?) Mounted in the same place laterally across the frame. To be completely francis I reckon they are too vulnerable there.

If you wan't basicerer I could hook you up with a bit of 4 inch sewer pipe, cap on one end and screw on lid on t'other.
How you mount it(stick it on ya bike i mean) is up to you
Or you could use pressure pipe but that starts to get kinda pricey
Hang about, I think we have some old hunks of alloy irrigation pipe at work,Hmmmmm, know anyone who could weld that ?

'Cause it's a common garden variety xt, not a "tenere".

Went for a ride to Big river today via Dovedale, Sunday Creek , Dry Weather Road, Porika, Braeburn, Maruia Pass and Westbank and then back the same way.

Big River is fantastic to ride, only wish I had more time to do a bit more exploring, but I was back in Reefton in 2 hours. Now know why they call it Big River, its because the road is one big river. Yes it rained but that just added to the fun and the scenery.(note to self : TAKE WET WEATHER GEAR)
Few good rivercrossings that were no problem as the rocks aren't slippery.

South side of the Porika is bloody hard work going up at the moment at the moment.

Clever clogs.

Actually I think 2 of those pics are from Porika. NM.

That ride buggered me, feels like I played 80 minutes yesterday.
It is interesting how bad your bike starts handling when you get fatigued, was really noticeable yesterday how difficult the same roads were in the evening compared to the morning.

Anyone need to take a mental health day on friday??

Gonna go for a day ride, but not sure where yet. possibly rainbow and back, or Anatori, or Bulwer with some sidetrack exploring or maybe patriarch port underwood or somethin like that.

Will leave early friday morning if anyone wants to tag along or has some other suggestions.

You could probably handle most of these local rides no probs, possibly with the exception of Porika at the moment. Everything else is good gravel road or forestry tracks.
Have you still got your mitts on that KTM....you go girl!:2thumbsup

I like.. clay roads.. forestry roads.. winding sealed roads.. dirt roads.. "thin gravel" roads.. haven't been on anything with big ruts/trenches (whatever they're called... :shifty:) etc yet.. not hugely experienced, but do ok (I think) :niceone:

i reckon if you can ride up ben nevis you can do the maungatapthen into frenchpass etc.

By all means ask the other guys what they reckon .I often change my mind where i am going as i pull out the drive anyway so yea i am flexible as.

Awesome!! Thanks. Maybe check with Nordie as to how far we went up Nevis.. but the main factor for me.. is being a short wheel base (& seriously tippy toed.. on one toe..) it makes it rather difficult stopping/starting on slopes/gravel.. so would prefer somewhere where I wouldn't need to be putting my feet down much.. :baby:

(but also don't wanna muck up your mental health day by making it too wussyfied  )

Rainbow road, one of the best gravel roads in the country (imho) I can hunt out the ph # tonight when i get home, see if there's still someone at the old homestead or whether you get the key from the main house.
you can have a look at "the corner" while your there

Would loved to have gone for an evening spin but was working till 11pm.
Maybe Fri morning somewhere, Saturday looks like it's gonna be crap weather...... I'm only avail for a couple of hours on Fri morn tho, back to work at 2pm.
My vote after a drop of rain would be the Rainbow, or out the back of Tapawera, most forestry areas are no-go mid week due to logging operations, and the Mangatapu could be a bit slick in places (well, for noobs) after Thursday's rain.
