Went for a blat to get gas at St.Arnaud this arvo via the Braeburn, Porlka, Howard then turned round & headed back to the Tutaki. Was funny as fuck on the way back because about 1/3 of the way down the Porika, I come across these two young Kraut blokes in a little van:blink:
They'd managed to get their 2 wheels drive van 2/3rds of the way up the Porika before bottoming it out in a knarly bit, then managed to reverse about 200 m before being able to do a 50 point turn...
I pulled up & asked if the needed any help & they said "na" ,then I complemented them on how well they'd done & they laughed so I asked why the bonnet was up & they replied "Oh the van is a little hot"
Was wet enough to make me realise that my jacket sucks.

Classic :) I had a sniff up there in our Subaru Outback a couple of years back. Gave up at about the 3rd hairpin. Glad I did cos after riding it a couple of months back I now know that it would have ended badly in a car.

Went out to Mapua (in the wagon) on Saturday. I was impressed with the number of bikes out there riding. Must be some tough nuts around. got rid of the black bus yet jaytz?
Why ? You want to buy it ?
I put it all back together and went for a spin the other w/end. Who knew you could ride alongside the Mapua bypass on a cycle trail ? I turned round when it turned into a grassy paddock  Goes well. I have to wash the mud/clay off it now :brick:

I went to Totaranui yesterday. Lovely, but was the slowest trip ever over Takaka hill. Quite icey:cold: Had to let a car go past as he was travelling too close behind me and I didn't really feel like being run over if the bike went down.

Oh really... Maybe I will spend time in the shed attempting to get the Benelli road legal, so it can be ridden further than just the odd hoon around the streets of Richmond. Its good to have an old bike in the shed to work on when your main bike is so gosh darn reliable.

Ive only been up so far....didn't get up as far as Thurlows. Who can be a bit tricky to deal with....
I don't know what they'd be like towards bikers. I could ring them....to see if its O.K & wether a key is required.
When were you thinking?
I'd be keen to come for a looksey
There is also the Downies Hut option which can be accessed from the Tutaki Valley South rd. Ive been there on Horse but that might be a more summery trip as the track is nonexistant in places & the river crossings could be tricky.
The manager of Mt Ella is happy for folk to head thru the property & its a choice wee hut (Downies)
A good loop would be to join the dots between Glenroy & Downies....would be worthwhile to talk with the relevant landowners at the Nardoo, Matakitaki Stn & Mt Ella,....

Yeah ideally when its a bit warmer....the rivers are pretty low at the mo though....August is usually pretty settled round here, but come September it might not stop 'till Dec.
I will give the Thurlows a bell as the locals can be pretty protective of their patch, mainly because of hunters. That's usually why they lock a gate. Its one thing to chuck your MTB over one , another thing to chuck the KTM over.:blip:

After about 5 mins I finally caught up to him & he had one of those 50cc (or maybe more) motrs on his bike. The covenant on our section has a max height of 5.7m, but no minimum house size.

Yeah but its friggen hard finding or building a small house around here.
Over this side of town (the North Shore) it's the price of the sections that make it unfinancially reasonable to plonk a tiny house on. Out the wild west it may be a different story. They need to opne up a few more areas of land with the idea of having smaller house communities with communal playing areas & gardens etc.
In the last month I have wired up a large gypsy caravan thing & a semi tiny house up the Brook. Just don't talk to me about bloody 'eco' houses.
Talking to an older couple that just spent 2 years travelling in a camper bus in Aussie. They have a lovely old 2 story place here but when they came back they would use the kitchen then go back to their biggish bedroom & sitting area as they got used to the smaller area of the bus & having all the extra rooms seemed so superfluous.

Friday or Saturday anyone?
Not Friday, maybe Sat, not Penzance though, I've done that on a little bike and wouldn't do it on the 800.
perhaps I need another little bike

Weather isn't looking the best on Saturday. What about Monday (Anzac day)?

Ok,, here's the current plan (subject to change) ie not fixed, probably better described as 'fluid'.
Saturday may be poo weather, so,
it's gonna happen tomorrow, Friday.
Meet at BP Haven Road 9am, to fill tanks, bellies, empty bladders etc.
From there the plan is to wing it.
Thats it.
Put your hand up if interested or got a better idea!

You are still out there!! - good to hear from you both. I have managed to book the key for Sunday 26th February and will make it part of a bigger day - might even pop down to Hanmer for lunch? Will prob try to get away from Richmond about 8. Beeby's Knob is the hill behind Tophouse.
See you then

Yeah, I would also into that. I have looked at Beeby's Knob on the map and wondered if you could get up there. The road looked to go quite a way from memory.

Ok - Sunday 26th meet at NPD Richmond (was Mobil) at 8am - then St Arnaud, get the key for Beeby Knob - up and down - take key back - then Rainbow (and possibly Mallings pass) to Hanmer. Some will camp there the night before doing the Molesworth on the Monday. Others will head back up the Rainbow and home on Sunday - take your pick.

Looks like NordieBro got 103rd out of 110 at the NutBuster Enduro!
How would the poor sod who got 110th feel to be beaten by someone riding an old twin shocker, drum braked XR250...
21st in Gold Class too...

Great question, it's in Renwick so I haven't got it in my actual possession yet, but it only has 381km on the clock so the chances are pretty good!
