Only saw the ride post after it had happened :(

Went for fush and chups and Murray McLean was at the Sprig & Fern having just come over the Maungatapu on a Matchless 500 and Royal Enfield 350.

Now that Royal Enfield is an adventure bike :D

Went for a ride yesterday with Topo ver the maunga. Topo got a flat front so he had to ride all the way back to crazyfrogs with the front wheel in the air. Pretty hard going downhill like that:sweatdrop

$2.00 tyres, good deal aye

Geez that's like one of THE earliest! :gob:

I guess back then rivalry was still alive and well; just Enfield vs BSA; instead of DR vs KLR/KTM vs the rest!!!!!

Nothing wrong with the $2 tire - tube failed, has a number of splits/delamination from construction.

Turns out that flat S12's are good to 65km/h, above that they get a real wobble on:whistle:

Took Jenni out to Wakefield, over the Dove Hill to Sunday Creek and up Panic Mac and through to the Spooners this afternoon.

The track was in mint condition.
I expected a bit of mud after the rain but it was sweet.
I want a lower gear for 2up stuff though.

Had such a good time yesterday I'd be keen for an after work ride over again one nite this week. Anyone else interested? i may even have a new tyre to wear in...

Anyone know if crazyfrog got the KTM started?

Woodman
22nd March 2009, 20:27
That slippery sonofabitch isnt as slippery as it was cause the 4x4's have been using it and after that rise it becomes more stony but also more technical . Easier from the Elaine end though

This sounds like a good challenge before my tyre gets too worn and now that bike is back in shape(ish) after laidback.

Maybe we could incorporate this in a ride next weekend . Only sunday at this stage for me (wedding anniversary/wifeys birthday on Saturday).

Hmmm maybe I can get run off the road on the steep drop off side this time:mad:

I was happy with maunga but since a lot of the riders are from the wrong side of town (How does that song go 'east end boys & west end girls...') am happy just to make the most of what evening lite is left wherever.

Two courses being run at Waimea College by someone from Wellignton?!

Jen knows them I think

25th of April Intermediate (less than 5 years of riding experience)

26th of April Advanced (more than 5 years of riding experience)

$50 (or $25 with student ID/community services card) for the day includes lunch.

Theory and practical

Maximise fun on your bike and stay safe doing it

Improve confidence

Understand the limitations of your bike

Emergency braking

Obstacle avoidance

Hazard action plan- situation awareness

Road craft

If you’re interested contact Krista Hobday at the TDC krista.hobday@tdc.govt.nz

And you'd be welcome to take my bike Jen if it had real tyres!

Anyone got any suggestions for good dual purpose tyres that I can get away with, with the 17" rims!?

Great ride agin last nite. Thanks to crazyfrog we (Nordie, Woodman, CF & myself) got a bit of everything in - steep clay track, riding blind into the sun:eek:, dry clay tracks, gravel forestry roads, bit of highway to Pelorus & a groove back thru the Maunga to Nelson.

The Maunga is in exceptionally good shape at the moment. I managed to move that fing big rock from the middle of the track with my now rooted plastic bashplate. Job for weekend - get new alloy plate ready for welding.

It was cool following Woody I put my navajo tracking skills to work - Hmmm... yes... powered on there... late braking there... Nearly missed that corner... Shat himself there....

If you're wanting to meet up in Pictown have you thought about scooting around the corner to Tory Channel and coming back port underwood? Or even jsut riding hte port underwood rd and coming out at Rarangi. Then scoot down to Patriarch, coming back through Onamalutu if time permits.

morning ladies

because you guys have been generously offering some accommodation and route planning over on the SI invasion thread I figured we invaders have to decide to do one of two rides.

provisional dates are 22-23-24 May BTW

Option 1
Thurs night 7pm bluebridge ferry to Picton - arrive Picton 10pm stay at Picton or Waikawa
Fri morning blast down hw 63 to St Arnaud for late morning tea.
Do Da Porika and Braeburn with late lunch at Murchison (2 ish?).
Go down the New Creek to Denniston track and turn back at the river.
Get to Reefton about 6 or so and stay Fri and Sat nights
on Saturday do Big River and Waitahu River
on Sunday head to Picton via interesting routes and Nelson/Mangatapu Track

If we did option 1 would any of you guys want to join in?

Option 2
Do something in the Picton Blenheim area on Fri before spending Fri night in Nelson. Then do whatever you guys suggest over Sat & Sun but heading over Takaka way might be fun.

Problem is the wgtn guys seem to prefer the knarlier end of the scale - ie 4wd tracks rather than just gravel dirt roads. Is there enough challenging rides in your area?

Personally for my tastes it doesn't get much better than the stunning bush of the Big River and Waitahu River type of stuff - I'm in heaven riding that sort of mild 4wd stuff.

would appreciate your thoughts - polite or otherwise....

how was the ride today?

warewolf
4th April 2009, 23:52
Awesome ride today! I have some pics of dubious quality on my phone, will have to visit Nordie to get them transferred to the interweb.

Almost half a DB by the time I got home. Maungatapu in the dark is something else... but strangely no slower?!

Breakfasted at The Slip Inn, Havelock having met up with Underground and Mountie, then high-tailed it to Renwick, cut across to Taylors Pass Rd. Taylors was v.dusty but fun. Black Birch track up to Mt Altimarloch was really badly eroded, it's been 15 months since I was there. It was windy enough up the top section to require some care. Left handers were easy: just stop fighting the wind. Right handers were a bit dicey. Views up top were okay, clear sky but a bit hazy.

We scooted back to Akbaba's in Blenheim for a coffee, then Renwick & Northbank Rd. The bottom of Patriarch was really dusty, but a great bit of road. I quite liked the feel of the area up top, above Lake Chalice, is it? The peak was in cloud but at the "carpark" we were just out of it, although it was blowing up and over us, then down the other side. It was 5pm by the time we set off from the top, so we skipped Onamalutu and headed back to Havelock for a brew.

Black <del>Bitch</del> Birch was more technical and much shorter than the road up Patriarch. Most of the former was stand up stuff, most of the latter sit down. Patriarch was really quite a nice ride, highly recommended. I think that the mountain we could see from Altimarloch, with the cloud spilling over it, must have been Patriarch. It was a little strange having been up the top of the two mountains, the highest drivable point on either side of the Wairau.

The enduro rear tyre was totally, completely and utterly destroyed in this one day. It was an old tyre, only about 30% worn at the start of the day but in a smooth manner; the tread blocks were in good shape just worn down a bit. First journey across the Maunga in the morning started to cut up the tyre. Every other section just made it worse. By the time I got to the top of Mt Patriarch, every second tread block down the middle (the narrower of the pair) was completely ripped/gouged off. By the time I got home, there wasn't much left of the other ones, either, and the damage was spreading to the side knobs. I think Nordie is right, you need a closer-pattern tyre for rock work.

All in all a great day out. Thanks for the company, gentlemen.

1/. NON DOT knoblies (michie S12) have an obsene level of grip in soft conditions:yes:.Oooh yeah baby! Not just that, but S12's are THE tyre to have in soft conditions. At least they were; they've lost some of their kudos since the manufacturing was moved out of Europe.

Trail riders tend to avoid the Sharlands area in winter - when they have soft-terrain tyres fitted - as the rocky conditions destroy them in short order. Mate of mine made the mistake of taking his 525EXC up there with a new S12 on the rear, for a shake-down ride... big mistake. Killed it in one ride.

I'd like to give it a go. I was told in the past they have run a 'trail bike' class, ie an easier beginner course designed for non-trials dirt bikes. KLR probably not suitable, still.

Just back from Patarau; was tempted by the Aorere goldfields but we were on a mission. As it was, we had a grumpy upset :crybaby: :baby: in the car for the last 20 minutes.

Reckon we need to have a Golden Bay weekender. Shitloads to explore over there. Stay in cabins or something so only carrying sleeping bags and tools. Possible destinations are Cobb Reservoir, East Takaka Rd, Totaranui, Aorere Goldfields, Whanganui Inlet to the Anatori, down the beach to Big River (flag riding to the Kahurangi Lighthouse hut as it could turn into a mission) & return, Knuckle Hill. Any other suggestions?

Golden bay is somewhere I really wanna explore, so am very keen.

The lighthouse should be do-able shouldn't it? as long as we go in the morning so there is time for contingincies etc.

Just had a cool idea, maybe we need a big bike trials day

OK so we stole Jen (MYGSXF) from Nelson for the weekend and made her go on a full on adventure ride - well about time she got on with it don't ya think!

Check the Orongorongo thread from page 5(?) onwards to see where we took her and the odd photo of her totally getting into it!

:innocent:

And my DR is now heading rapidly to looking like Woodman's KLR! Kinda interesting riding tracks with severely bent bars on one side. Right gotta go take a few photos to appease the Welly massif!

Even at a low king tide it is between knee and waist deep. If we drown a bike (either running or being walked across) we could be up for some serious time wastage. That would be sweet for an overnighter at the hut, but a real downer for a weekender that includes a lot of elsewhere.

I had the same problem at Big River (Kahurangi) in January, on a king low tide. It was definitely a no-go esp on my own, just wasn't worth a drowned bike. You will have a good hoon along the beach and experiment with the dunes before you get to the river tho' so still a worthwhile trip.

my advice on indicators is do not get original sticky out ones as you will break them again. get the old xr ones. I got wr ones hanging down behind the rear rack, looks silly but absolutely unbreakable there.

Anyone up for an overnighter camping at the Anatori river? Just checked the tides for anzac weekendhttp://www.metservice.co.nz/public/marine/tides-nelson.html, looks like low tide in the saturday is at 3.35pm which would mean there would be time to loop through the goldfields on the way out:niceone: then head down to big river for a look before returning to Anatori for the night:drinknsin

Not too sure about the route out of the bay, but Parapara lookout, birds clearing, east takaka rd would use up sunday morning to be home at a reasonable hour in the avo.

Ummm... watch your tides. Westport (http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/marine/tides-westport.html) gives a closer reading, would have to dig up my DOC info but I think there's 30mins difference vs 90(?) to Nelson. Anyhoo, the Westport chart says the low is at 4:49pm. At least it is a king tide with a 0.3m low at ANZAC w/e. This w/e is 1.1m, that 80cm makes a difference to the rideability of Big River for a Kahurangi Lighthouse trip.

From memory, the Anatori and Turimawiwi were forded at mid-tide (we walked from the Turimawiwi to Big River for low tide), they were pretty low then, so you have a pretty wide time window if you aren't fording Big River.

Me and a mate got stuck when we were 4WD'ing up by Mt Ruapehu. Got both wagons stuck in daylight in all that volcanic sandy stuff, then by 11pm when we finally got unstuck it was that dark and foggy that we couldn't re-trace our tyre tracks. Thought it was an overkill having the GPS on during the day, but it was the only thing that got us out that night - re-tracing our route on maximum zoom, reversing and correcting where we found ourselves straying off the beaten track.

and with the 18/21 wheel set I might as well have a DR-Z400E! They're also 7ish kg lighter/more powerful, the only thing I'd lose would be the USD front, and the big front disc...

But you would have a 17" wheel set as well.

Otherwise just get some rims laced up to your hubs.

Of course my little cherub. I will even have to race away from the littlies first soccer game of the season to make it in time. Can you ask those nice helpful policeman to ignore any incoming green bikes?

How did you get away with THAT??!!

My life would not be worth living if I tried to leave early from my boy's footy!

The girls footy isn't too serious at the mo - lots of hanging around the goal nets & wandering off the field to get a cuddle from mum

And that's just me:lol:
