Could be the $2000 O-ring. You should investigate that a bit more.

Only 2 easy reasons for an oil filter coming loose,
    Either
    A Faulty filter
    B Faulty fitting
And its not "A" very often at all. Always ensure you have the right filter for the job. If fitting an aftermarket filter ensure the "O" ring and the hole in the middle are the right size and thread. Check the sealing surface before fitting the new filter, not unheard of for the "O" ring to stay stuck to it when removing the old filter. Light film of oil on sealing gasket. Tighten the filter to 11Nm.
    Simple as that (allegedly)

Was the filter loose? I have been out to repair an 1150 GS where someone had overtightened the oil filter and the outside can had come loose where it is crimped over on the top outside edge. What a shit of a job to get that off and replace it.
The other common complaint is for the large rubber gasket to stay stuck to the block when the old filter is removed most people just drop the old filter in the drain tin an dont notice it fit a new filter and the oil blows out between the 2 gaskets.
What ever it is hope its fixed good luck
    regards GSers

I'm going to regret this I know but....

I'm thinking of selling the R80G/S but still trying to work out whats it's worth in the current market. If anyone is interested PM me with specific questions, silly offers will be ignored as I'm not going to let it go for nothing. I don't need to sell it and still enjoy riding it.

There's pic of it on the first page of this thread, and in many of the earlier galleries found by following the link in my signature, screen & rack not included however though the brackets for the rack are.

    Reg'd till 21/02/2010
    Wof'd till 18/10/2009
    Reg'd as 1986, frame # traces to 1982.
70% worn E-09 on the rear.
30% worn Vee Rubber knobbly thing on the front.
    Braided front brake line
Aftermarket top triple clamp. Much stronger than original and gives 2 bar mnounting positions
    Bar risers
Custom 'Rider' seat by McDonalds Motor Trimmers of Tauranga.
Full Stainless Staintune exhaust, headers right back to silencer. Worth a couple of grand on it's own.
26 litre R100GS tank, gives ~210 miles to reserve.
KM's unknown but it's a 27 year old bike so probably lots, speedo was been replaced by previous owner though the old one is included and has a broken glass. Current one reads about 13,000 miles and had 275 miles on it when I bought it. Apparently it's not the original motor.
    Brackets for Ventura racks.
    Progressive front springs
Hagon rear shock, a bit worn.
Homemade Alloy bash plate made by previous owner.
Gearbox, Driveshaft & Diff oils replaced June 2008.
New BMW fork gaiters, fork seals, fork oil & carbs balanced 18/08/2008
Due an oil change, new oil filter included.

Also comes with side panels, original standard springs, low front guard, spare front disc and a few odds & ends.

Goes great, hard to stop the rear spinning up out of gravel corners it's so responsive. Way lighter and smaller off road than the PD, but 90% of my riding is on-road.

changed the oil when it was hot, just finished 230k ride put new filter in done it up, run it & parked it up for the week, that night temp dropoed to around -5 am thinking that because it was still warm when i tightened the filter that because of the cold it may have shrunk enough to loosen after a long rough ride, seems to be ok now, & as it's been pointed out, just plane faulty fitting by mwah

    cheers

You're welcome to come over and have a look, if nothing else to advise what you reckon it would worth.

Anyone got an R1100GS speedo cable laying around? Mine only lasted 123000kms! Do you reckon it'd be covered under warranty?
