Ice - Cool, glad you think it's a bit better. Hopefully the bike is coming along, AJ thought I might be able to have it back for the weekend, not that that'll do me any damn good...

I might see if I can do something to get the headlight subframe to sit lower if I can be bothered.

BT090s are what was on my bike when I bought it and I've done about 5000kms on it, probably 75% town, 25% open road (1 track day, 2 coro loops, a few other misc bits and pieces) and they're still holding up well, probably another 1-2000 kms in em. Don't have anything to compare them to, really, but on the track I had the pegs down a few times (suspension probably a bit tired) and never once felt insecure about grip.

What a surprise, AJ selling the best tyres you can get for the viffers? Who woulda thunk it? :P

Will want to query with him whether he has a rear in the right size though, as Ecko appears to have a RVF which would have the 17 inch rear, not the 18.

17's are 3 million times easier to find than 18's.

Yeah, but if he is specialising in VFRs, he may only have the BT090s in 18. Will sure as hell have something in 17, though.

That said, Wellington to Auckland is a hell of a long way to go for a set of tires

Hey guys. Thinking of buying a RVF400R.
Had a test ride, and noticed a flat spot in the powerband at around 8k rpm.
The bike on idle was fluctuating in rpm.

Now the seller says this is normal.
I know this is a carb problem.

My question is, are his comments valid?
Those who owned and ridden RVFs, please contribute.
As I am seriously thinking of purchasing it.

    Thanks
    Cameron.

Could need a rejet, standard pipe?
otherwise there is a mid range flat spot on the VFR 400, im not sure if it reflects on the RVF though.

It was the standard pipe on it.
But on the test ride, the power on didnt seem smooth or consistent.
Is this the way it should be?

Never ridden an RVF but my VFR is very smooth revving through the range. I don't notice any flatspots. It also idles steady at around 1500 (i think). The RVF has different carbs but it shouldn't be that different. Maybe this video could help? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DwGC7pRXpo

that the one in trademe at the moment? 'never been down the road' but has replaced indicators?:-p

Hmm you would think that a carb balance would be done at the same time as the vale clearances..

    Hey.
Yea its the RVF on trademe at the moment.
    Indicators have indeed been replaced.

5 previous owners, last one was a mechanic at motorad.
There are signs of a low speed drop on the right side, can be visible on the fairings but hard to see in the pictures.

And as i said earlier, weird idle fluctuations, flatspot in the powerband, and a few scratches in places.

I would get a decent VFR over an average RVF for what he is asking.

The VFRs at least are notorious for a flat spot at 5-7k RPM, with power coming on quick and smooth after that all the way to redline. No lumpyness at 1500rpm idle, either (oh how I miss that sound...).

Stock airbox/filter? I've heard bad things about people having issues after hacking up the airbox or replacing filters.

Otherwise it'll be a carb problem. A good clean out of all the jets/passages and then get it balanced, right as rain.
