Traveling home in the car from Papakura yesterday I was behind a woman in her car who flicked her ciggy butt out her window. I watched it slow-mo arc from her fingers up and over into my windscreen. As I pulled up next to her with my window wound down I called out to her "I'm glad I wasn't on my bike behind you as your cigarette butt just landed on my windscreen and I wouldn't have wanted it in my face". She looked somewhat taken aback and said "Oh, sorry" as she promptly took off round the corner.
It got me thinking. How many smokers here throw their ciggies out the window when they've finished with them? Years ago a friend of mine had a driver do it to him while on his bike and the smoldering butt started to burn his riding jacket. While I understand that many smokers might think a cigarette butt isn't a huge deal, especially compared to chucking cans, bottles and hamburger boxes out windows once empty, how many do it and under what circumstances? (Nah, I'm not going to report you to the litterbug police!) I'm just curious as to whether being a rider and therefore potentially being on the receiving end of someone's goobified ciggy butt in the face (or lap) makes a difference to how you dispose of them, if you smoke in your car.
