America is a very backward place socially. The US minimum wage has been $7.25 per hour since 2009. In the richest nation on earth. Whoopee!
The US is the only country that doesn't have nationally mandated annual holidays. Many people have no sick leave or maternity leave.

There is poverty in the US beyond what can be found even in the poorest parts of Britain. And Britain is seeing the reappearance of nineteenth century deprivation diseases such as rickets and scurvy. Unlike Britain though we're not talking big cities in the US, we're talking rural whites. People who almost certainly vote Republican.
