Blah Road ride to Awakeri Hot Springs 31st Jan '09

This will be overnighter 31st Jan/ 1st Feb to Awakeri in the Bay Of Plenty Dam, shoulda put that in the title!!

Right then, following on from the 'Big road bikes lets use em' Adv thread here's a plan. all started here

The basic idea is for those of us lucky enough to have a dedicated road bike to drag em out for a run. This by no means excludes anyone else it just means we won't be able to take the gravel option!

Everyone & every bike is welcome.

The plan is to meet & stay at Awakeri Hot Springs on Saturday and then dinner out. How you get there will depend on mode of transport and direction of travel.

I plan on leading a ride from Auckland Saturday morning trying to stay off the main drag. Basic route at this stage is Alk-SH22-Rangiriri-Ohinewai-Te Aroha-Okoroire-Rotorua-Awakeri.

Other details like times can be decided later depending who's going and who we might meet on the way.

Once there, maybe a soak, a beer then dinner down the road at a local restaurant.

On Sunday I was thinking a run thru Waioeka Gorge to the Matawai Pub and back. Those wanting to do the Motu Rd can.

I will be staying on in Ohope Sunday night, so 'find your own way home!'

The 'Awakeri Hot Springs' has a range of accommodation from motel units to camping. I've booked a motel unit as if I take the 999 there won't be much room for spare undies let alone a sleeping bag..............

I have 3 spare single beds if you want to bunk with me, pm me.

Rates look ok and you must book your own beds/units. I would suggest if you don't mind sharing post it up like i have stating number of beds avaliable.

There are plenty of spaces avaliable at this stage..........

    View here, Awakeri Hot Springs

I have booked a table for 10(more/less not a problem) at the closest(& good) restaurant called Avaganda Cafe & Restaurant The meals are 'normal' fare and main prices in the usual range. They have plenty of room at this stage and your welcome to book your own but for my table you will have to go thru me (pm pls)

The nearest town is 15k away so food/drinks will have to be brought in on Sat. see what gives. (there is a shop at site)

Up on calendar now, so who's in?

Look here on #1 post for future updates.

    Cary.

    Update 16th Jan
Will be leaving Papakura Autobahn at 10 BUT this is a ride in progress so check here for last minute updates.........

tsk tsk you disappoint me, Ixion. Awakeri is the centre of the known universe. (At least it was when I used to live there.)

    Thanks Cary.

Will be bringing the wife with me on the Beemer.

She is really looking forward to the long Km's. Not

For anyone wishing to meet up on the way through to Awakeri, we will be

travelling from Hastings to Taupo, then to Murupara via Goudies Rd, then

along much of Galatea Rd to arrive at Awakeri Springs about mid afternoon.

On Sunday travel to Matawai (via Ohope ?) then on to Gisborne and back home.

    Looking forward to it !

We're booked in. Kind of apparently they don't bother taking bookings for tent sites. But we will be there

Awakeri is only about an hours ride from Clint's place, so we could be up for a bit of a scenic detour on Saturday, if anyone is keen

Not being fortunate enough to own road bikes, we'll console ourselves by doing the Motu on Sunday
The road to hell is paved...

Not many signed up so depending on who does sign up and what they are riding I may be keen to join you.

Broke the 999 on my trip to/from Ohope over X'mas so depending if I can get it fixed in time I may have to bring Tiger anyway.

Nicky and I have a niece's wedding on the Saturday in Hamilton but were contemplating taking the Trumpy and joining you lot for the evening's frolics and maybe some of the following day's activities. Don't know if we would be interested in going right down to Matawai as we have to be home that night.

Design fault. The part of the subframe that holds the muffler cracked thru, got it welded but promptly did the same thing. Checked the replacement price, $2200!! Going to get it welded again by pro.

    Arrow is another crack........
