Anyway, was going to head out to the gorge tomorrow and see how the river level was looking, so now I need somewhere else to go.

HAHA... mutter mutter LOL

The gorge aint that bad, compair the two tag photos, it dosnt really get that much higher more wider and faster, the news said it was up to the bridge but I cant see that some how there be serious issues if thats the case.

... whats a arboretum? :pinch:
An arboretum (plural: arboreta) in a narrow sense is a collection of trees only. Related collections include a fruticetum (from the Latin frutex, meaning shrub), and a viticetum, a collection of vines. More commonly, today, an arboretum is a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants
So... we are looking for a forest, in canterbury, be it somewhat of an old one.

ps I still havent seen or found it but have been lerning about the area, Coalgate was just that, the gate to the coal... Glen Tunnel again just that a tunnel in the glen (valley) were the coal came from, still parts of railway line and even the statain platform is in some ones back yard... coal track road was the trackthat lead direct to Coalgate and the tunnel... interesting I must check out the tag aparently remains of the house is still there even if oddly enough trees have growen through it.

Click on this link then zoom in from Waikari. Follow the dotted line. According to Wiki ... the tag is 4.8 km's past Hawden.

Must be talking a different pub? Huruni is the closest. Left on the way/right going home (home being south of the pub). Tis all tar road but plenty of gravel options for those inclined.
Everyone knows where it is now so just a matter of time.

Reading all this again I'm starting to think it was poke a stick at D week or something.

Tend to go past that phone box too often to leave too long. Address is 191 Inland Scenic Highway or Amberley Balcairn Rd. The next phone box is a little off the seal a bit over 34 km from the last or 35km if you want to avoid 1 km of gravel. Very close to one of the early tags.281653281654

sounds like you were bloody close, shoulda been 2 rivers tho, but ya needed to hang a right and enjoy a short straight, then ya feel like ya riding off the edge of the world but to find ya self steply decending in to a tight winding road at which when you exit you will be looking straight at the Tag, around the next corner its shingle and the next its nothing but H2O, a horse and a jet will lead you straight there.

Its been done, sometime in the mid 90's, trials bikes from Kowhai Bush thru to Cust following the old coach road using the tunnels and bridges where necessary. Bikes had to be lifted over fences in places and one creek crossing was 4 feet deep. And it was snowing. One of the riders was in the position to carry a track control radio and the train controller on duty knew they were in there beforehand. Probably can't be done now.......

Yes Captain_Salty is right, now that I see Captain_Salty's photo it has certainly retriggered the memory, I flew past that spot, same lovely view, with David Chappell years ago.

And again Captain_Salty is right with regard to his geography, however I well remember sitting in the front end of a Fiat Railcar heading west many many moons ago, the driver gave me a bit of a running commentary as we climbed what he “ loosely” termed the staircase, however he did qualify the fact that the term staircase did derive from the the Staircase Stream, he also identified the specific geographical points Captain_Salty mentioned as we passed them by not to mention all of the tunnels.

There are a lot of folk from my era who used to travel up to the Bealy / Arthurs Pass area on a Friday night train, [and the occasional Sunday excursions, when Steam was King], who would talk about the staircase as being loosely applied to the impressive climb, views, tunnels etc of this section of track, but most people who travelled this line knew the real Staircase section, as such, was as Captain_Salty has described.

Pretty much. Rode from the East end to Kowhai and didn't find it, after going through the McGrath's ford (don't ask). Checked out the Hill View domain. Started riding to Oxford, since the bike was getting thirsty. Saw the sign for Cooper's Creek and thought "why not?". 60 seconds later, in the last place I looked, what should I find but the Inn.

Got some nice gravel riding practice, but now need to clean the chain. Only did the bike on the weekend! :angry2:

If you grab a set of water wings off one of the boys and jump in the river behind home, float downstream a couple of hours and when you hit the second bridge walk south a couple of clicks. It wasn't that long ago that they had to open up the lake after the flooding around Motukarara & Ataahua; suppose the southerly swells must have filled it again pretty quickly  (was on the news showing the excavators digging it out).
