Cryptic clue-"Little news adds large weight to this road"

This one has only about 11 hours of life remaining.
Off work at 9pm again.
Showed a couple of people at work and now the clue makes some sense. It's very simple, very clever, I was overthinking it. Maybe overthinking is inaccurate, I was well off working it out either way.

Here it is on the corner of Prestons Road and Clipper Place.
Js DR is low on gas, it was a nice calm evening and I finished work an hour earlier than planned so I took my bike instead of Js.

Well I stumbled upon it again while riding home. For those of us who only started watching this thread about 3 days ago, tag 22 means nothing. I tried going back and looking for it but you seem to be the only one numbering them and I gave up. What post was it?

The thought also occurred to me that since you're numbering them you're probably keeping a track of everything - I bet you have a spreadsheet of all this or a map on the wall with little coloured/numbered pins in it :eek5: Go on admit it :D

Transalper
17th July 2009, 15:47
Hey far queue, nice to see you here.
The only map I have is this google maps based one (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=104006398483911262434.00046cc21673b6bad5b7e&ll=-43.277205,172.337036&spn=1.67169,3.262939&z=8).
It has all the tags in numbered order and pins on the map with links to the posts which belong with them.
The map on my wall at home is an adventure route one with whiteboard marker pen all over it.

This is the moon gate in all it's glory again as I stumbled on it again on my way back home.
I originally though there would be much more fence to go with it.

It's address was first reveled in post 492 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1129278755&postcount=492) as in Aidanfield.... so I biked through Aidenfield on the way home. Where oh where could I have been coming from?

Transalper
17th July 2009, 18:54
It's good to hear you tried.
Sorry, no gates involved.
The road surface itself turns in to those bricks just for that section of road. Yes the MTB is on the road.
Watch out for balls being bashed about, you should be safe though because that tall black fence in the background should keep them off the road.
I'll go back in the morning and get a different 'giveaway(ish)' angle with the camera and better lighting if it's still lost.
There's a geocache there too btw.

Good job Guzza, don't know whether to be happy or worried your back. :sweatdrop:
It was a bit of a funny one as google maps has a street view showing the sign there, but google map doesn't show the street. Satellite view does however show the street.
Kirkwood is the suburb, if it's big enough to call a suburb. Backs on to Westlake. There is a nice little tennis court right behind the horse, which is indeed on Stallion Ave.
Camera flashes do hate fog.

Oh yea, the new one may be a little familiar to me. Not sure though.

What happened to no file photo's ?????So you want me to stop the game for the next 24 hours, or was it 36? while I go take my time tagging the plane again? There's the weekend wasted.
Get real, get past it. The photo is one week old, it was still on my camera, I only transfered it to my PC now.
If I was using a film camera it could take a few months for the photo to become a file by the time the film is full, developed and the photo finally scanned.
Be thankful I'm up front about it and tell everyone which ones aren't taken the very same day they're posted.

No one else has voiced a problem with it so far in the 'Christchurch' game. (speak now if it really does bother you, I'm only interested in hearing from people playing the Christchurch game on this the matter relating to only the Christchurch game)
The main thing is when ever we find someone elses tag it is claimed with a new photo.

The clue to finding the site was in a Kiwi Biker Forum... re: The flying Kiwi sidecar record attempt.Nice, I knew of various records set in the area and when I stumbled upon a photo of the plaque on Google Maps (actually displayed in the wrong place) I knew it had to be done sometime soon. Haven't looked to see what kind of results a search might yield, but figured there'd have to be people here who would have some idea.

The quote "As one fern frond dies, another rises up" didn't help, other than to confirm the spot as with pic 3.

I googled the phrase to see what came up. Nothing to do with the tag at any rate. Still, I thought it might give an oblique clue as to the area...a suburb rising up out of nothing, more or less.

Happy to hear you actually had to look for the tag! I was only able to find it on google because I knew where to look.

Transalper
24th July 2009, 22:49
Yea, I had no doubt it was in Pegusus somewhere, the lights and colour scheme all fitted perfectly.
Tis hard to give people an area to look without either giving away the entire location, or leaving them floundering in a large area with little hope.
After Pegusus I actually traveled about 20km down Tram Rd from where I thought the Speed Records Monument was to be able to find that one and start the new Tag too. I came in from a side road nearer the Oxford end.

No they weren't doing 180 mph they were doing 185mph

Historical Account: "Rumor and Sigh" - Russell Wright set a 1954 New Zealand speed record of 140 mph (230 km/h) on a Black Lightning at the Tram Road Speed Trials. At the meeting he met Rapide owner Robert "Bob" Burns who had built a streamliner shell for a sidecar record attempt. They formed a partnership for Bob to supply a streamliner shell for Russell's solo world record attempt, if Russell let him use the Black Lightning for his sidecar world record attempt. In December 1954 Bob Burns went first and set a new F.I.M. World Sidecar record of 157 mph (253 km/h), up from 154 mph (248 km/h). On the 2nd of July 1955, Russell Wright set a new F.I.M. world speed record of 185 mph (298 km/h) on the Tram Road at Swannanoa, near Christchurch, while Bob Burns upped his sidecar record to 163.06 mph.

Well done Guzza ...that was quick.
Here is some facts for what its worth:
The foundation of the present structure was laid in 1874. The architect, Benjamin Woolfield Mountfort, was an active member of the parish and had been responsible for additions and alterations to the original building, as well as designing the brick parsonage built in 1864.

By 1876 a new chancel, organ chamber and transepts had replaced the original ones. These used basalt from Halswell Quarry, with limestone for the dressings, red and black glazed tiles and slate for the roof.

Gem = Diamond?

:eek5: not quite..............no diamond mines around canterbury :pinch:

 can be a bit fishy.

Definately would be flattened by the wind out there today

Gem = Diamond? That's the same thing I keep coming back to thinking.

I'd go explore all the unseen roads in Diamond Harbor if I was in a position to do so. Looking at the map there are several 'other' roads off the main one to investigate on the chance that Gem = Diamond.

Will be interesting to see what NiggleC has in mind.

Meanwhile I almost have my engine back in and all hooked up again but now I'm short one o-ring.

edit: ok, not diamonds... didn't know there were mines of any kind in Canterbury. I see more education coming shortly.

:pinch: Cantabrians come on.....whereabouts in the area is renowned for finding gems (as in Gemstones)

I have learned gems can be found about an area I've previously ridden the CRF along. It now fits the bill and I know there are old buildings there. Can't make it at the moment though.

Good job, I had found this artical on Gemstones at Birdlings Flat (http://www.teara.govt.nz/Places/Canterbury/Canterbury/2/ENZ-Resources/Standard/5/en) and had done a run up the beach on the CRF (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=91413). We'd seen that there were some old buildings there so was pretty sure it would be there somewhere but still didn't know the exact location for sure.

Coal mines, ok but coal is hardly a gem in this case.
I've seen Quarrys all over the place.

So no clue with that one then.
My bike is alive again and J and I are riding tomorrow on our respective bikes for a change instead of sharing. I'll be running in the motor.
Will keep an eye out but probably just end up Little River way for lunch. Somehow I don't think we will pass it out that way?

You wont find it out Little River way. Take a look back over the previous page of posts, there is a clue as to the general area to be looking.

Ha ha, you could say I'm proud of myself, I resisted sucessfully last night and went to bed fairly early instead.
Tonight I finish work at 7pm and should be on the road about 7:30pm and if anyone wants to join me I'll stop in at the Russley Rd/ Yauldhurst Rd corner garage to top up the tank. Should be under way again by 7:45pm.
If someone else takes advantage of what looks like another great days riding weather and gets it before then well obviously the plan may change. I'll either be looking for the new tag or maybe just head toward Akaroa or the bays and all the pea gravel.
Please note I generally travel at sub-light speeds.

Some more info...
Glentunnel library and post office built in 1886 from local bricks and tiles, Its main claim to fame is that it is octagonal. Believe it is still in use as library and postal agency. I have heard why it is octagonal but cant remember what the reason was think someone gave the money to build it.

Those local bricks no doubt came from the Deans Famly brick works. I wonder if they bank rolled the unusual design in order for it to be a show piece?
