We had a 1980 Marina HL with the 1700 O-series alloy head motor. It was a very nice car to ride in and it had enough torque to keep up with a 2lt Cortina up the Albany hill! Power disc brakes worked very well, ask the wee boy who ran out in front of me one day... It looked good with the driving lights in the grill, the interior and boot were roomy, and the seats were comfy. I still miss it! :(
Oh, and it was red with those faux "alloy" wheel trims.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that they dropped the "Marina" name when they fitted the 1700 mill. They were simply called "Morris 1700" and "Morris 1700 HL"
I had one in that sort of apricot colour, then sold it to my son. He had it for years, we both loved it.

Yeah, in 1979 the B and E series engines became the BL-O 1.7, overhead cam engine, The vans and utes were called a 575. The aussies got the good ones again, with the straight six version. I am yet to see a diesel version though, although some of them around these days smoke like diesels.:headbang:

Funny you should say that, mine should be the 'normal' set-up like on the Maxi, but some muppet of a mechanic decided to make them cross-over between my ownership periods.
I'm hoping he's only flipped the wheel box over, but I haven't had the chance to check as I need to remove the dash and that's a hassle, not to mention it needs a sand and varnish so will want to do both at the same time etc.

Same doors, different handles. The design brief was to make totally new car from the ground up....but you have to use the doors from the 1800 because we haven't finished paying for them yet. Practically the first car we saw with 5 gears ( of course Jap bikes had had them for a few years by then) and there were a few mistakes - selecting reverse at speed. Graham Gordon had a few kicking around his floor in Titirangi - one (out of a Tasman, same box) had ripped reverse idler out of the floor of the box and a conrod had smacked it for a six out of the side of the block.
I spent some time once trying to fix a clutch judder in a Maxi....did all the usual things - then found the crownwheel loose on the carrier. I was able to pull the diff cover off and do it in situ. Never a fan of the Maxi, give me a Landcrab anyday.

From wiki....
As a one-off prototype, an Australian 1800 Mark II body was fitted with the 4.4 litre V8 and modified three-speed automatic transmission of the P76 in the BLMC (Australia) Victoria Park works at Zetland, New South Wales.
BMC were front drive biased, so in the early design stages of the P76 they built the 1800 V8 to try out the front drive layout. It was wider than the standard body shell, but didn't look it. To go against the Big 3 BMC Aust wanted a rear wheel drive car, so they built this thing to show it was a bad idea....but it wasn't as bad as they thought. BMC became the horrible BLMC in later stages of the P76 development.

My sister and Bro-in-law bought one that already had the necessary work done to replace the plastic head gasket and spaghetti head studs. Had it checked by a very knowledgeable MG mechanic who pointed out what to look for. I told them not to buy one but they thought it would be okay since it had had the work done.
Suffice to say they did end up regretting it as it began to fall apart around them. Our old MX5 is still as we bought it.

I'm still undecided at this stage if I should go for an ADO16 or get another 'crab and make it Rally style and use it on the track perhaps once in a while, just seems like having two of the same car is a wee bit of a waste of time.

Don't the MGF's have Hydrogas? which is the same thing but you have those annoying Nitrogen filled spheres?
Yeah, same thing, like the Allegro, but they still use hydrolastic fluid....just an update of the original system.
The doors are rusty on the Kimberly - but hey, you can still use 1800 doors! ....or Maxi doors.
Indiana_Jones
16th September 2012, 21:42
Yea it is the same apart from the spheres, but the Nitrogen leaks and apparently it's a bitch to get new gas back into the spheres.
Yea those doors look munted, but as said, same doors as ADO17 and Maxi so better ones could be found.

Yup, the Kimberley was the higher spec with the four headlights. A friend had one back in the early 80's. It was mint and in a really nice dark blue. I was envious of it and I would own one today if I had a place to garage it.

Well Riley and Wolseley were real cars in their own right....until becoming part of BMC. But an MG was always based on a Morris.....then they became part of BMC and were based on an Austin. An Austin Healey is a hotted up Austin. An MG Midget is a badge engineered Austin Healey Sprite. Just like Lego - here's a box of bits, now go and have a play....

Pretty much on the money, these marques were swallowed up and became badge engineered versions of what they used to be.
But that's fine as these companies would of just failed, and I love my Wolseley, I know it's just an Austin/Morris 1800 with a different front end :D
But still has 'normal' dials (i.e. no ribbon), bigger seats with fold down arm rests!

...In 1979 the Marina received a facelift and the BL O-Series OHC 1.7L engine, however at the time the Marina name was perceived as negative by the New Zealand public – hence the Marina name was dropped completely, the car being renamed Morris 1.7. The Morris 1.7 had high equipment levels and included front spoilers and driving lights on all models. The related van and pickup models were renamed Morris 575.
Production of this car ceased in 1981, and the car was replaced locally by an expanded range of NZMC Honda products...

Positive camber?
In most old car the dimension between the top of the front wheels is wider than at the bottom. It makes them easier to turn. In modern cars the the bottom of the tyre is outside the top, it makes the turn better at speed.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I know about camber and caster, just thought for track work you would dial in a tad negative camber. Sure makes non-power steering easier with a bit of positive camber though.

I did it for two reasons.
I fitted modern radial tyres that work better with positive camber and 185s are the biggest tyre I can fit however the tops of the wide tyres used to be outside the guards and would have failed a WOF.
There is no way I was going to cut the guards.

I got a bit of wheel spin in my crab around 3 weeks ago when leaving the shops and going up hill just after it had rained, was the first time it had ever done that!
But I think that's more so to do with my tyres which are starting to get on and I'll be replacing them this summer hopefully.

So you've adjusted the camber to put the TOP of the wheels inside the guards (ie closer together at the top? Thats negative camber.
/----\ = negative, \----/ = positive.
Standard Minis have positive camber on the rear wheels. When wider tyres are fitted, and the camber unchanged, they look crap from the rear.

A mate descibed the XJ12 as "the biggest car you could get fuck-all in". Sort of a reverse Tardis from Dr Who!
My late brother had a couple of these at various times ... and reckoned the Wolsely was quicker point to point than any of them.
Many years ago I had a tussle, late one night, on the back road from Otrahonga to Hamilton. Took ages to catch up with a set of tail lights (& I wasn't hangin' about) and eventually discovered the car was a Wolsely!:rolleyes::mad::cool:

Absolutely bloody brilliant! There was one I couldn't identify... that funny little square thing. And that music. One of my favourite instrumentals:
"Time is Tight", originally by Booker T and the MGs.
I remember an interlude on TV in the early days when they didn't fill spaces with commercials. There was a T-Bucket cruising round what looked like the Kingston/Queenstown lake road to that music. Took me years to find out what it was! A few years ago I found a Booker T tape in the specials bin at the Whare-whare. Didn't even stop to check if Time is Tight was on it as I was sure it would be. It bloody wasn't!
