Many years ago I drove a brand new Austin Princess 2200 Vanden Plas (a friend's company vehicle). It was the British answer to the Datsun invasion. Carpets, Radio, Sound Proofing, the works.
I guess I might have a differing view these days on the same thing, but I thought it was the Bees-Knees.
Momentarily, it made one proud to be British. It's a shame it cost around 70% more than a far better Datsun

Cheap, best in its class, great handling and no roof.
It's taken the British idea (small car, shit motor) and made it actually handle, be reliable and relatively well put together.
There's not really anything wrong with the MX5... it lacks power, yes, but so does every non-Honda 4 cylinder.
They'll even out perform a 924 easily (not saying much, but it has a Porsche badge)

Pug 405s are pretty nice? As are the little 306s, gorgeous wee things. I myself would love to have a 1.9dt 306, then get the GTi suspension up in it :headbang:
Some AUDIs are worth looking at, they do tend to have common problems (in my mind, common issues are better than random ones), if you're looking at the 1st gen A3, make sure the trans services are documented and if it has more than 100k on it, ask if the ABS unit has been repaired or replaced, I fixed and ABS unit in one for a mate, usually they'll get replaced, but you can re flow the solder joints in them and replace a few various bits and bobs
They will throw air bag lights, but usually that's in 2 door models (same as ze Beetle) because folding the driver's seat forward eventually wears the loom under it
Nice wee cars to drive, and essentially the same as a Golf

Fun fact, they use the same rad fan switch as a ZZR600/400
The Pug will be far more entertaining, but check them both over. The Pug needs to have had a recent cam belt and a good history with the auto box, they also develop many interior rattles, but they're sweet little cars for the coin!

Indy buddy, If it's the one with the Honda SOHV unit, then that is quite reasonable. However I seem to remember helping a mate with taking out his auto gearbox and the inexplicable computer fault codes were very difficult to lose. It could have been him, rather than the car, as he was always sodding about with things. I don't believe they are as crap as other Rovers, so that's a good sign. The Asian assembly issue might be a problem. Do scan the door seals and make sure they all open and shut precisely. Check that the aircon and heater work OK and let the fan cut in and out at least twice. Cooling and the coolant quality was a problem for my mate too. Hope it pans out for you.

A guy working for me bought a Jap import and at its first WOF after import, it failed on an engine mounting. He asked for the part back after repair. It was a seriously busted engine mounting that had been gummed up. Initial tester was complicit in the crime. He let it go, whereas I would have taken the part and reported the certifying garage.

On a British note, who wants to buy something little and excellent (buy a Minor) and swap for my luxury Swede tank
I'll talk it up a little bit:
It has a beige exterior.
Even the rocker cover is beige.
It has no curves.
It has a huge stereo.
That's about all I've noticed (except it has a tasty 5 cyl motor and the best seats ever)
It goes forwards and backwards. I think I turned a corner once.

Indy, I had a highish mileage 620si Auto for about 4 years. I hate to say this, but it was a fabulous car. The speedo regularly stated 130Mph, but I am sure that was an error. Great in town too and at that time, I had 3 kids (not at 130Mph) and there was no problems.
One problem with the car only, the passenger side window rubber went a bit funny and had to be replaced. That was about it. The timing belt wasn't cheap to change either. And it does need to be done to save the engine going all Chernobyl on you.
My verdict is that it was a good car and pretty damn economical too, though not at 130Mph.
Have you looked at the Rover Sterling - Not ever owned one, but have driven one a few times. Not cheap to run but faaaarkin nice for a cheap luxury family car!

I can do a cambelt for under $300 easily on one
The one you're looking at Indy has the H23A motor, they're great engines.
I'd avoid the Sterling myself, they can be troublesome and expensive to fix, thirsty too. Better off buying an E34 525 for similar money, better car in every way
The 620Ti went pretty well for what it was, before the inevitable exploding engine and gearbox  Makes me want a Tomcat. Even though a Prelude with an H22A will rip one in half.

There were a few of those in the Rep fleet when I was working in London in 95/96 ish and the guys that had them, loved them (although the Pug 406 I inherited when I joined out-handled them and I resisted the offer to swap). Definitely a cut above your Cavaliers and Mundaneos back in the day. They were all built at Honda's Swindon factory and all but the diesel I think are Honda motors.
600 is the series, 618 = 1.8 motor, 620 = 2.0 etc. When you build a car aimed at the fleet market, it's important to have that status indicator on the back!

Agree about the running costs of a Sterling. It was a nice drive though (at that time).

I had a 825 Sterling for a few years, it was the equivalent of the Honda Legend. It was pretty nice but lacked soul. I replaced it with a SD1 V8 manual, vast improvement.
I didn't have the Sterling long enough to notice any increased running costs. The SD1 was certainly a lot thirstier.

YellowDog
19th February 2013, 17:33
Clearly you will get far better economy out of the 416, but you will be getting so much more car with the 623 for not a huge drop in economy, unless of course you drive it like a complete caaaaaant. But then of course Mrs Indy will be there to administer corrective measures
Indiana_Jones
19th February 2013, 17:38

Drive the 416 like a complete caaaaant and the 600 series like an old granddad And you'll find that the 600 series is indeed quite a bit more economical
Because of the extra weight and momentum, you can put the 600 in neutral and free-wheel down 3km sections past Newton and down to the flyover bit before the harbour bridge
Not sure how the viaduct has changed that :shit:

Fookin' lovely interior, she'll love it
But the auto gives me the shits, as does the K series engine.
However, if you get a good one and be extremely pedantic (service the trans, and importantly, the cooling system) it should be a very nice car to drive
I would recommend running comp test and a pressure test on the cooling system

The Borgward group was the last fully family owned car maker in Europe, makes included Goliath, Lloyd, Hansa, (renamed Goliath). I think there was another one in there somewhere, but the old mind is slowing down. Must be the heat.
The group went bust because, according to experts at the time, they had too many competing models. eg. Borgward Arabella and Goliath/Hansa.
Spent some time chauffeuring a neighbour around in an Arabella. Loved it! 1100cc flat four fwd. Also had a cousin that owned a Borgward Isabella... the best known model in NZ. It was a beautiful car both to look at and to drive. I think they were about 1600cc. 2 door, but relatively roomy 4 seater.

I worked at a UK firm many years back and all the sales guys had Porsche, Merc, & BMW badges. It was getting quite boring and once Ferraris and Maseratis started showing up - no one knew how to be different (I had a Lotus Esprit Turbo with a permanent back ache). One of the guys showed up in a TVR and no one quite knew what to say. The finish quality of the leather was quite something and they looked so different. As soon as the other guys realised that they were made to order and you could watch your car being made . . . . .
Just soooooo boring . . . . . . . . . . That's when I started buying bikes

Congrats to you.
This may help your 'Gentleman's Car sell:
Apparently Presented without comment…
Positive ground depends on proper circuit functioning, which is the transmission of negative ions by retention of visible spectral manifestation know as "smoke".
Smoke is the thing that makes electrical circuits work. We know this to be true because every time one lets the smoke out of an electrical circuit, it stops working. This can be verified repeatedly through empirical testing.
For example, if one places a copper bar across the terminals of a battery, prodigious quantities of smoke are liberated and the battery shortly ceases to function. In addition, if one observes smoke escaping from an electrical component such as a Lucas voltage regulator, it will also be observed that the component no longer functions. The logic is elementary and inescapable!
The function of the wiring harness is to conduct the smoke from one device to another. When the wiring springs a leak and lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works afterward.
Starter motors were considered unsuitable for British motorcycles for some time largely because they consumed large quantities of smoke, requiring very unsightly large wires.
It has been reported that Lucas electrical components are possibly more prone to electrical leakage than their Bosch, Japanese or American counterparts. Experts point out that this is because Lucas is British, and all things British leak. British engines leak oil, British shock absorbers, hydraulic forks and disk brake systems leak fluid, British tires leak air and British Intelligence leaks national defense secrets.
Therefore, it follows that British electrical systems must leak smoke. Once again, the logic is clear and inescapable.
In conclusion, the basic concept of transmission of electrical energy in the form of smoke provides a logical explanation of the mysteries of electrical components especially British units manufactured by Joseph Lucas, Ltd.
And remember: “A gentleman does not motor about after dark.”
Joseph Lucas “The Prince of Darkness” - 1842-1903
A few Lucas quips:
The Lucas motto: “Get home before dark.”
Lucas is the patent holder for the short circuit.
Lucas - Inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas - Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.
The Original Anti-Theft Device - Lucas Electrics.
If Lucas made guns, guns would not fire.
Back in the ‘70's, Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which did not suck.
Q: Why do the British drink warm beer? A: Because Lucas makes their refrigerators.
This has been referred to as the smoke theory when the smoke comes out its finished, cooked or done for.
One more for you:
Why did the British never become a big factor in computer development?
Because they couldn't figure out a way to make a computer leak oil.

Yes you are correct and that was the argument at the time. The Italians were the most famous for it with their 40% recycled (scrap) 60% new metal mix for Fiats and Alpha.
Leyland wasn't quite as bad. I used to go to a Leyland dealer whom told me that there isn't much point buying OEM panels, as they will also rust very quickly. The third party stuff was so much better and if you could get fibreglass copies, just do it. My 1979 Marina 1700L had a large rust spot of rust close to the centre of the boot. It was only 3 years old :(
