'Twas the Buick 215, Murika didn't like it as it was too small  they even had a turbo 215 for a bit, but that fancy ass tech didn't help.
Nuttin' like some quality pig iron!

The Murkins did many very cool motors way back in the day, but some how we all ended up seeing 170-180hp 400ci Pontiacs and 180hp 500ci Caddies...

Mind you, the early 500ci Caddy made 750nm.
Good luck getting that out of a small Murkin motor.

Cool... just cant believe it took a yank, from the 61 cutless

The aluminum V8 in question was none other than the 215ci. unit that would later be sold to Rover. The British manufacturer used in several of their vehicles over the course of over forty years in one form or another. It was even available with turbocharging for a time, producing a total of 215hp and making it one of the first engines with a 1hp per cubic inch output.

The 1-1 hp to Ci was a big thing back then
I think Chrysler were the 1st of the Detroit bunch in the late 50's?
The Chev with the 302 small block, making 360hp (there was a kit you could buy over the counter with 2 4bbl carbs, 600cfm I think, that took it to 400hp)
Some factory 302s were rated pretty low at 290ish but were nearer 376

The 327 was also above 1hp-ci in the early/mid 60s

My figures may be a little off, been years since I read these things :baby:

Motu

We had an Austin 1800 ute as a shop hack for some years. The 1800 was one of the first cars with radials as original fitment, they were never intended for cross plies, but there were no heavy duty radials, so the ute had Xplies. The front wheel drive BMC's were bad understreerers, the ute on X plies was in a whole new world - a full half turn on corner entry, you just kept turning the wheel until it started to turn in. And yet I still managed to cross it up and even do a 180 a couple of times - with a full tank fuel would leak out of the filler cap and onto the left rear wheel and the back would let go. On such a chronic understeering car snapping into full lock oversteer it was not what you expected.

I worked for this firm several times, served my apprenticeship there, and seemed to keep going back. The 1800 ute got really rusty, and as the boss was building a boat he wanted to keep it, so one time I was re employed just to fix the rust. I fitted a whole new right hand sill - it was huge, complete with door frame. I also cut out the floor and fitted 2 new 16 gauge floor panels each side. I also made a rear pillar....and then painted it. Took me about 6 weeks, a shit load of welding with a gas torch in the days before MIG welders. Ended up staying for another 12 months, left, and went back again a year or so later.

'Her-in-doors' is looking at a tidy MX5 today - plain-jane, low KM, red.

Was everything fun-wise that the MX-5 was but also practical. I am seriously loving it and have no idea as to why I didn't consider them earlier.

WAAAAY better than FWD POS I had been looking at previously. I even prefer it to the old inline-6 skylines/cefiros had in the past. Fantastic Chassis. Way more fun than the Audi's and BMW's I had.
Massively underestimated car. Will be buying another.

This was my first car. We had another mini in the family documented in here I think somewhere, but the van holds a special place.

Edit. Obviously net pics, and on a second look the first one is pommy (note interior door hinges). I found another pic which was the same model as mine, the Aussie clubman. Has exterior hinges.

The fucking drivers door blew clean off on Kelson hill on the way to the street race in 1990, would you believe we wedged nails in it and still made it to the entertainment!

It was blue too, much nicer than the red one.

Actually as an aside, I know where there are two utes. Messy condition but one was an original NZ Post wagon, still has papers! As much as I would like I couldn't take them on but they are there and the owner would part with them if someone wants a look. I think he has a mini saloon (speedway) that has the nuts engine too that may be up for grabs, with spares for Africa.

Lol. The awesome thing about seeing photos or video of awesome cars from the 70s, is seeing the amount of body-roll etc.

Even an MX-5 would handle heaps better than the old stuff. (Shit did I say that out loud...?)

It's interesting even comparing my 2006 Falcon with the 1997 Jag. Both rear-wheel-drive full-size saloons weighing around 1700-1800Kg, 4-litre straight sixes with 4-stage autos. The Falcon is nothing flash, just a "beige machine" which provides a comfortable ride with reasonably acceptable performance. But compared to the Jag, it's really spec'd.

The Jag suspension is designed for refined and gentle "wafting" along. Pushed hard into corners, it wallows and rolls. The transmission also is designed for "limo" type usage, and by comparison is reluctant to kick-down for more spirited driving. The speed-variable steering is vague and mushy around town.

The Falcon is a driver's car, the Jag a passenger's car. But which do I like driving the most...?

The Series II Land Rover I had with a Holden 186 was WAY better than the one with the standard 4 cylinder motor.

But the 186 revs lower, so the overdrive was an essential - unlike the heater, which, being a factory accessory, was not fitted in either vehicle .

The Essex engine was the Dagenham lump. It ran for years and there were so many variants of it. Once the battle between England and Germany was was settled, the future was reshaped with Dagenham gradually diminishing its role before eventually closing down.

I see the Aussies are suffering the same fate http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/8708396/Ford-confirms-Australian-plant-closures which is a shame because the Ford quality will suffer for the sake of a cheaper cost base.

The two door version of these was the original Capri.

Mk1 & MkII Consul = 4 cylinder versions of the mkI and Mk 2 Zephyr 6 (dont think there was a Mk III Consul)

3litre V6 was the english motor, 2.3V was the german one. 3litre V6 was in the mk IV Zephry (very first models were 2.5 litre) 2.3 was originally in the Grenada, but ended up in the Capri and also the Mk IV and Mk V Cortina. V4 versions were also used in the Transit van (english) and Taunus car (german)

English/ Euro fords were quite good in that they had a common bell housing pattern, made engine swaps real easy (I put a 1300 Kent into a 105E Anglia, went quite well completely stock

Tended to be knows as the Zephyr Special, has a different grille..

The MkIII Zephyr was available with either a four and six cylinder - the four was 1.7 litre and had a grill which was between the headlights whereas the six was 2.5 litre and the grill included the headlights.

Ford used the Consul name on the Mk1 and 2 Consul - shortened versions of the Zephyrs
The Consul 315 - sometimes called the Consul Classic - also the Consul Capri - a gorgeous looker
The Consul Corsair
The Consul Cortina - the first of the Mk1 version without aeroflow ventilation
The Consul [Granada] of the 1970s

Consul seemed to indicate it was a four cylinder car - either a straight four or vee-four, think some Consul [Granadas] had the smaller vee-six engines

Now can we get back to British Leyland and their vast range of impressive vehicles, including Sherpa vans.

Shall put the anorak back in the wardrobe now...

I was going to comment about the sucky vacuum wipers, but now that I think about it they were on my 100E Prefect. Used to pull out onto the motorway on the way to work, floor the gas pedal to creep up to speed... and the wipers would stop dead.

I bought that off an old guy who couldn't afford to fix the steering. Every time you went over a bit of a bump at anything over 10mph the wheel would start to shake from side to side. It rapidly got worse, until you braked down below 10mph again. Drove it around for 6 months like that before I found another steering box for it. The old one was full of sawdust and dead grease.

I've just spent the last week on MK2 Escort coupes ;) none that are quite normal, highlights being a 200hp Pinto rally car (very nicely built car, been doing some Doug secrets to the rear suspension to get it working nicer), a very tidy 1.6 Sport, rebuilt the front brakes and have still to do a thrust bearing in it. Been playing around getting a very hot 1.6 in tune, very wild cam, worked head etc (poor old bitch is bogging down when hot, goes like the clappers for a kent xflow though) and last, my favourite, went for a WoF in a very sexual MK1 Lotus Escort :woohoo: very, very rare. I'm not allowed to drive that one, but I can say it's a beautiful little motor, very smooth and pulls very well, must have been a rocket back then

I get to do MOAR work to them this week too, and hopefully more in the future.

Now, me being me, I get to go over a Morrie 10 Series M to get it up to scratch for a Vin, and I'm strangely excited about that idea

I've driven all three of those. The Metros rusted worse than any other car in its class. The later Rover ones were very good.

The SD1 was my dream car. I loved the Midnight Blue. They were the UK Police car of the time. A mate of mine, who was a cop, told me they were crap and took me for a drive in his 280,000 mile patrol car (without handcuffs). It was quite rattly and didn't run so well, but 280k miles = around 450km, which is not bad going.

I'd jump at the chance of a Vanden PLas version though

That's the LAD cab, so called because it was used by Leyland, Albion and Dodge. It was a mix and match cab giving various versions - that looks like the Albion cab. Leyland used more models with the cab. I used to like driving them, on the smaller models the gearlever came in from the back of the cab, so you used it behind you. Larger models like the Hippo and Octopus had a twin stick.

Cheers for that.:2thumbsup The old film clip they played of them being tested by the layland engineers was the best thing I have seen on tv in a long time.:Punk:

Was a great watch wasn't it. Not a high vis in sight when performing the brake tests on the motorway either. And then they park it up in the lane and get out the tape measure.:laugh::laugh: I think it is on again sometime this week, I am going to try really hard to get it taped. Those winstone trucks were pretty common around auckland once upon a time, the mickey mouse ones were my favorite of their line up.:headbang::headbang:

What were these ''Mickey Mouse'' things?

Albion cabs usually have the long doors with step inside the door

Leyland and dodge went more for the short doors and step ring on the front wheel

I owned an Albion Cheiftain for over 20 years awesome truck still running and legit now six speed crash box and split diff

Some classics in this video the lyrics about are a crackup too if you have ever driven one

These old Fodens that winstones used were nicknamed Mickey Mouse trucks, because of the way they looked with the split screen and the color scheme.:niceone:
