after chatting with the hospital reps, they've managed to convince me to go on chemo, what i didn't know was that they had sabotaged me! they had my x there helping convince me! and my best mate too! but sadly the worst part is that chemo for me is every Wednesday night :( so I'm going to miss you lot heaps, it took a lot of convincing to get me to give up n.a.s.s every Wednesday night, but as part of the agreement, i can have someone with me as i take the chemo so it will help me to have someone there with me so ive chosen my best mate to stay with me every wednes day night (was only allowed to pick one :( ) so im going to miss you lot and ive decided to take some riding courses to help me with developing my skills and practice alot

Having just had my granfarther pass away from terminal cancer i hope to god you are being straight up here. if not...... well lets say i will be less than impressed. that said if you do have cancer and are going to have to go through radiation then my thought s are with you as i have just see someone go through this and it is not the best thing to go through.
If in six months you are well enough to ride i hope you get beack on the bike.:scooter:

Well I'm back from NP earlier than I thought and I've come home to a driveway that is being ripped up by a Bobcat as I speak. Will have to do a bit of 4wd'n just to get out the gate. Looks like I'll have to bring the Tricker out for a ride instead.

Certanly nice to meet you too buddy, actually all of the new faces (and the old ones) , it was really nice to meet you all. See you next week ride.

One point tho, if there are people who wanna do a seperate ride to the carpark next time, can we mention that earlier and seperate the groups better. Last night was a bit of a confusion. The moonlight cruise was well nice tho. Someone bring the moon next week too :)

Seriously dude... just because u got kicked out of the pub due to being underage + act like a complete dickhead trying to unsuccessfully blow your bike up at Nass.. u cant make shit like cancer up!!
I personally hate you even more than ever for making that shit up... GROW SOME BALLS AND GET A LIFE DUDE!!

Mate, as Steve has said above, I myself am very closely connected to cancer, my partner has it. If the truth comes out that you're taking something like that in jest, you won't get off it lightly.

Otherwise, I do wish you all the best for this second bout of chemo. It's definitley not easy, but atleast you'll have someone to support you through it.

getting kicked out of the pub has nothing to do with it
and I've never tried to blow my bike up, its a 2 stroke that's why it smokes.
and you really have some nerve saying I'm making this up, that's just shallow, i now know what type of person you are, you judge before you know.

16silver, with all due respect: I think what has happened here is that people know that you have a inclanation to tell some slightly tall tales. This is the boy who cried wolf scenerio - I'm not saying anything about whether you suffer from cancer or not, but you must understand that people are instantly sceptical of that claim because of some of the other stories you've told us. You've gotta remember that many of the folks we socialise with on the NASS ride have been round the block enough to know when somebody is streching the truth.

I just think that you might get on with everybody a bit better if you were a little more humble when you come on the ride - learn and listen, rather than try to be the centre of attention. People put the time and effort into organising these things so we can all learn and have a good time, so please show some respect by actually learning from these folks, so you don't just end up another teenage skin crayon.

I'm sure a few of the others might remember some of the absurdities like the police closing a public road so you and your buddies could race around the streets in your jeans (they're kevlar). Or the dozen kegs that were the prize for winning.

As for being the centre of attention, why do you find it necessary to sit your bike on the rev limiter when you start it up? Or sit it on the rev limiter in the carpark then loudly exclaim to everybody that you were happy because you just 'cleared out your exhaust'. Do you know what a big end bearing looks like? If not, don't worry cause you'll find out pretty soon.

the street racing was an organised event, supervied, and monitered by police, my jeans are actually kevlar (lifestyle imports check them out if you dont believe me), and no i dont start my bike up on the revv limiter, and never HAVE had it on 16krpm so you are DEAD WRONG there, i put the throttle on to about 4k to 6k to warm the exaust up so it doesnt suffocate when riding and as for the carpark thing, you are dead wrong too, i had just pulled in and turned my bike off, DID NOT SIT THERE REVVING IT as you state, i loudly exclaimed that my exaust was cleared out because i was happy as it had actually happened, so get your damn facts right before making up bullshit, and yes the prize was a dozen kegs, sponsered by the local pub, we all chipped in for the event and the locals chipped in too and there are videos on youtube somewhere, matt is uploading them so will be proof on youtube of that too, so next time, dont be lazy and bother to ask for the full story and get the facts right before making bullshit allegations. :whocares:

And this is why it spat handfulls of red embers on the road in front of my bike, when you gave it throttle, last week on the Riverhead Rd??

And then carried on to blow smoke at my helmet while you revved it while wating in line at the carpark?

actually it was turned off when it was still blowing smoke
and the red embers were from the carbon in the exhaust, you all forget i have a 2 stroke.

Funny how the smoke poured out, as it had done during the ride, as the sound of a two stroke motor revved ten feet in front of me.......

I agree with cheesemethod here, "you might get on with everybody a bit better if you were a little more humble when you come on the ride - learn and listen, rather than try to be the centre of attention. The reason your poor little 2-stroke was doing that so bad that eve, is because you ride it too low in the revs a lot of the time.
You need to ride it in the powerband regularly, or you'll just foul up the whole system, and coke up your exhaust.
All i could smell when i pulled into the carpark was that, i thought someones clutch had shat itself or someone had ridden over with their brakes on or something. That aint a 2-stroke smoke smell, that's a burning death smell.
Red embers (i.e. chunks of burning coke) coming out of the exhaust is not a normal thing for a 2-stroke from my experience (and yes, i do ride a 2-stroke as well as the hornet)

16silver
6th August 2009, 21:06
yes i agree that its not normal for a two stroke and the thing is that the exhaust was really packed with carbon as it has NEVER been cleared out in its life (44,000 km,s on the spedo) so it was because of that that this happened

Now I've been doing a lot of research into bike racing at the moment as it is something I'm interested in trying myself. I was under the impression that to be allowed to race in an official MNZ street race you had to have competed on the track for at least 2 years. You also need full leathers, race helmet and a bike set up for racing, among other things. I could be wrong tho.

The thing about the jeans dude - somebody was trying to suggest to you that kevlar jeans that are suitable for commuting to work might not be the best protection while out riding on back roads at night when compared with cordura pants say. You insisted "they're kevlar, they're kevlar" like nobody at the NASS had ever heard of kevlar biking jeans before. This is the stuff I'm talking about man - people don't suggest these things to try show you up, they're suggesting that you save doing yourself an injury.

As for the revving thing... whatever man. Deny it all you like, I must have been halucinating, as were the 10 people around me passing various comments that went along the lines of "why is he trying to blow up his bike?" Again, I'm not being an arse and trying to tell you how to run your life, just warning you that you could damage your bike by doing that. See when you rev it up before any lubricants can circulate across the bearing surfaces, you wear out the bearings much faster. This can wear out your engine a lot faster, or worse still risk seazing the motor or throwing the big end out the side of the crank case. Either way it'll cost you a lot of money to fix. If there's a problem with your exhaust fouling up perhaps you could ask around, you might find there's a few people with a bit of 2 stroke experience who could help you out with that.

:calm:

Totally agree with this !!!! (other than for the not having a bin bit!)

Mark / Richard (and Dawn, when she bothers her arse to show up !) I've been coming to the NASS nights for nearly a year now, and have found them totally invaluable... I am extremely grateful for all your efforts, and the time you guys give up...

I think what might be useful, is that those of us that sometimes end up standing around and chatting, before shortly buggering off to the pub.. if we have a chat before hand, and decide if we up for that evenings activities, if so, we join in, and do it properly, if not, then we go off for a ride, and go to the pub.... that way, we don't end up detracting from the training going on (cause none of us want that in the first place...)

For me, the NASS nights are a combination of 2 things...
1, the training, learning new skills, brushing up one older ones...
2, the social side.... having a laugh with like minded people, (except Fizbin, no one want's to be like minded with him !), and having a beer, and taking the piss out of Cain's virginity !

Some days, I wan't one of those more than the other... but really don't want to detract from other's training ! :)

I agree with Slyguy - Mark's coaching and helpful tips has made such a difference to my riding and given me so much more confidence :first:

Perhaps when we get to Albany we ask the group what they'd like to focus on and mix up the training with some games to keep it interesting :niceone:

I'd like to practice counter-steering if possible!

And if people want the night to last longer - perhaps go for another ride somewhere at the end of the night? - thoughts?

Hey all! :) I've got all my gear - and will be getting my bike next weekend! So won't see you next wednesday but will the one after. First question for me on the night will be... what the hell is counter steering! Turn the front wheel to the right slightly before you turn left? Seems insane! haha

Thanks for a good first night guys, I started to get the hang of that tight course quite nicely by the end of it!

I only met a couple of you but for those I didnt formally meet I was the one on the white bandit with the huge L plate!!

Sorry for bailing before the pub tho!! I got a txt just as I was leaving and had to shoot home..
All in all was a good night, pity you lot took so long to turn up haha

Hopefully i'll be able to make it again next week! Might even ride out to Westgate for the ride back to Albany! Where exactly do you guys meet out there??

Ask this question when you come on the night. It is a bit weird when you read it. Much better is having it explained and tried in the carpark to understand.

Had a good time with your balls last night Toto!!

1st go was a bit of a joke, but I found out I can get around them quite easily if I move my body from side to side... initially people were coming up my rear, but at the end of the night (with more confidence) I was finally coming up one of the other guy's rear...

Electrical Diagnostics: Retard Style...
Badger arrives at Fizbin's work. Phones Fizbin, he answers...
F: "Yello"
B: "Cockwallet!"
F: "Douchenozzle!"
B: "Where the hell's your bike?"
Fizbin opens workshop doors and badger pulls inside, parks up bike.
Weave through production workshop, find big red parked next to a line of drill presses with jumper leads sitting atop her.
B: "So what's wrong with her?"
F: "She's poked"
B: "Yeah, but what's wrong with her?"
F: "She wont start"
B: "Yeah, but like how... Like... or like..." *ensue range of stupid engine noises*
F: "Nah, just nothing. But then i waggled the thing and it worked for a bit, then it started for a second and then died"
Fizbin wiggles battery to see if he can do it again. Pulls some random wire off the neg terminal by mistake
F: "Oh yeah, and that keeps coming unplugged" *reassembles plug*
B: "Giz a go..."
*Badger wiggles battery*
"eeeeeeurrrrrrr... (the sound of fuel injection coming to life)
B: "What the hell??? i didnt touch anything!!!"
*Badger has a closer look, taps random plug thingie, big red lights up again*
B: "There ya go, that bits shorting out"
*Fizbin pushes plug in hard, it clicks into place and big reds dash lights up*
F: "OH SON OF A BITCH!!!"

Battery is too flat to start it, cant be arsed jumping it.
Stand around and talk shit for half an hour
Fizbin steals the work ute to get home. Badger gets back on the bike and sods off home...

:wari: THAT'S HOW THE PRO'S DO IT!!! :Punk:

That's very kind! I'll keep in touch with y'all...

I settled for a little less than I was hoping for, because it was a good swift sale to a trustworthy seeming female buyer who's a lawyer and her boyfriend. But I'm still happy with the price, as I didn't lose much, and had some good use from the bike whilst I had it, so all good.

I am planning to upgrade to a bigger bike, 600 or bigger, but I first want to get a bicycle so I can get fit riding to work, and then I want to save up a bit as I want something a bit newer, fuel injected, and low Kms.
Might get an SV650 or maybe a CBR600 or even a Hornet 600 or 900.
Haven't really decided yet.
But I'll be back eventually!
The biking bug never goes away :)

Gradual improvement and lots of practice is the path to great skills Sammy
I know it's easy to get impatient, but each time we push ourselves past our limits, one of two things will happen
a) we pull it off, and come out with anything from a smile on our face to a stain in our riding pants depending on how well it went
or b) something goes awry and we bin

i certainly dont wanna be picking you up off the deck again, and much less out of a ditch

Take a look at Toto (Hope you dont mind the example mate!)
He is a magnificent rider, with skills beyond mine. He has got there through riding a LOT, and he has had his fair share of incidents also.
He is testament to the fact that if you push too hard too fast and get carried away, things will bite back soon enough.
(Dont take this the wrong way, i am happy to ride with him any time! Just trying to make a point...)

None of us want to see any of you get hurt (newbie or old hand), which is why we give of our time and knowledge at whatever level it may be. The lessons we impart may save someone their skin or their life one day.

Start small and build up. Even Rossi had to start somewhere. All to often it is those who jump ahead of themselves that become the sad statistics we see every day.

ok, i'm ranting, i hope you get the point tho!
We take our lives in our own hands each time we sling a leg over, try to remember that when you think "oh stuff it" and throw it at a corner!

I wouldnt call a head on collision a near miss, but you got the reason right.

I still shudder when I see pics, or think back to that day....
(no, not due to my tremendously large fine)

I've been riding almost a year now, and still consider myself a complete newbie. But, I believe it's my awareness of my lack of ability that has kept me alive...

I have a lot to learn, and the desire to do so, but, I know it's going to take a long time. Personally, I take comfort in looking back at how I used to ride, and then try to look where and how I have improved... It's amazing how much easier things get with time :)

Sammy, You've already improved a hell of a lot from when you first started.. just keep on doing what you're doing ! :) (not the braking too hard and sliding down the car park bit tho !)

Some get to learn from the experience, but some don't get that chance. Smart riders learn from the mistakes of others - less risk of death that way. Remember - the longer you live the more years of riding you can get in, it is well worth surviving for as long as possible.

make sure you do not travel faster than 30km/h faster than the traffic, and cover both brakes and be ready to use them. Saved my arse on a number of occasions.

Are you knocking their mirror off? Cause cagers get annoyed when you do that.

I haven't had any abuse from cagers yet. Flick your indicator on, only split if the traffic is REALLY SLOW or stopped (motorway) and keep the speed differential down.

Are you switching from lane to lane or riding between the cars? Often cagers don't mind if you're going between them and will sometimes even make way for you (if they see you). If you're riding erratically they can get jumpy.

You shouldn't get any abuse from cars if you split sensably (oh god bad spelling) slow and smooth is the key

It's called a feedback loop. If you get abuse doing it ... don't do it! There is nothing to be gained by annoying cagers. It's also potentially dangerous. I don't do it unless the cars are doing less than 20km/hour.

Will be leaving from Parnell about 6:00 (going home quickly to put on my gear). Probably get on at the Port on-ramp.

I guess to be honest I don't know what splitting sensibly is, as I haven't seen what other people do. Haha - nah I ain't been kicking off peoples wing-mirrors! That would be rather dumb and I may get my leg caught and then crash?

Well essentially, yes. That's exactly what you should do, for now.

I've never had any abuse from a cager while splitting except for the unfortunate instance when I pulled up to a red light and managed to hit the mirrior or the car infront... that was extremely awkward. But even then they didn't give me any abuse, just odd looks.

Clearly, you're doing something wrong. Nobody else has a clue in the world what you're doing wrong, and apparently neither do you.

----

My recommendation, as much or as little as it means,

Attend say, 2 NASS nights. On both nights request low speed handling skills (essential when lane splitting and everyone loves doing it). Propose a slow race on the first night to see how you do against others, and then again on the second night to see how you've improved. Practice in between nights.

That would be the best way to quickly boost your lane splitting ability in my opinion.

One thing you'll quickly learn about your bike in particular... those hyo's are a bitch to steer at low speeds. God knows why.

Look man you have to start some where. If you are copping abuse from the cagers then you are def doing something wrong. Couple of tip from someone who has ridden (and binned!) a GT205R. As below they are horrible at low speeds. you need to practice this a lot as it is the key to learning to ride your bike. if you can do it slow you will more than likely be able to do it faster. i don't recommend you split until you have had a good couple of months riding under your belt to get your head around your bike.
Remember that cars will drift in the lanes. and the last thing that a car expects is to see a bike come along side it in traffic.

i think Josh has said it well. use NASS most of the guys who are helping out now have been doing NASS for 2 years + use the experience of Mark, Richard and Dawn. the most important thing to do though is just show up. Rain or shine don't wuss out because it is raining. NASS will teach you most of the basics that you will need.

Absolutally loving it.... it's a thirsty bike, but the feel when you get up in to the power band is phenominal.. so rewarding !

Took it to the track day at Puke at the weekend, and it was no slouch (my riding perhaps was, but the bike wasn't...)

It's a very smooth to ride bike, so for me, a perfect step up from a 250, but still plenty of personality to keep me interested for a while yet ! :D... The other good thing for me, is they're not particularly common, I've only ever seen a couple of others !

This exercise was done by Dawn to great effect, with a variaton to it though.

Instead of emergency breaking, then cornering (Which as mentioned above, can be difficult). A instructor stood behind the row of cones and at the last minute either pointed to the left or to the right, meaning the rider had to have quick enough reactions to go either way.

If anyone feels like a pre-NASS pootle next Wednesday btw 4.30pm and 6.30pm let me know. I work in Avondale and live on the Shore so going home is a waste of time, and screw staying at work for 1.5hrs longer than I need to. :chase:

Could be a quick zip up Old North Rd / Peak Rd and back, learner friendly.

PM me if interested.

Well after Neons adventure on some wee gravely bits this week I found some myself tonight.
The motorway entrance was closed at Westgate so I turned into the detour rout and hit a patch of tiny gravelies in the centre of the lane at the turning point.

The front wheel didn't like it much but as I was going very slow we stayed shiny side up, me and the stead:clap:
