Good ride last night chaps, the higher pace and lack of learners made it enjoyable.
Won't be there next week but ahhhh.
Phill you left you Balaclava behind. Matt has got it for you, atleast it wasn't the keys in the ignition again...

Is there a learner friendly time to come?
The Reibz

This is a learner friendly ride and all people of all skill levels are welcomed.
There is often a carpark session where essential skills are taught. Good thing to come along to if your only just starting out

The thing about burnouts and stoppies was bullshit hahaha. We mainly practice braking and riding around cones to practice various skills.
Meet up is at Z in westgate at 7. I finish work at 7 so I ride out about 7:15 and try to hit coatsville to meet the guys when they pass through around 7:30.
2nd Meetup is the albany carpark, outside noel leemings (just up from the warehouse). We usually hang around there until 8 ish then shoot off to the pub for a brew.
Always good to see new faces

It is closer to 7:30pm, sometimes a little bit later (depends on how well the ride goes).
Some tips for everyone coming on the ride tonight; it's going to be cold and probably foggy, so some tips are:
Wear three of four layers of clothing under your gear.
Wrap something around your neck to keep the cold air off.
If your gloves are not good at keeping water and wind out try wearing a pair of cheap latex gloves (get them from super market, Repco, Super Cheap) under your normal motorcycle gloves. It makes the world of difference having warm and dry hands.
Clean your visor so the water droplets can run off easily. A lot of riders like to use Pledge on the outside, and ordinary car wax also can help the water run off. Use a cloth to polish your visor, not a paper towel.
Always be kind to your tyres for the first 5 minutes of riding, otherwise they wont be kind to you. And remember, tyre grip can be used for braking OR accelerating OR cornering, but mostly if you are using them for one thing you can only use them a little bit for the other - so choose wisely next time you are on a wet slippery road. For those interested in a bit more theory, check out the "Traction Circle":

Oooo lucky.
I always have this feeling that they are out to get me. Only been done once for speeding in my car. But still hmmmm. Never there when you need them. And always there when you don't want them.
I'm über paranoid about my WOF and Rego. Mainly for insurance purposes.
A friend got pulled over by a bike cop and they got talking, turns out the cop had just bought the same bike as her......because he wrote off his old one dangerous riding lol.

Neither. The legal limit. :) The limit that comes with financial penalties is you get caught crossing it.
The next ART day will probably be around November, and that is a great time to find your own limits.

Tonight was a good learning experience. Picked up alot of points to work on with my low speed riding as well as my open road speed (and greater). Also was a good reminder of how fiddly 250s can be.
I might try and get a ride sussed out for Friday afternoon is anyone is keen. Duration of around 1.5 - 2 hours at medium pace. PM me if your interested or I will post more details in here tomorrow.

Ride report for today.
Was nice and sunny with only a few wet patches along scenic drive. It was quite mossy, would have been a major hazard if the ground was wet. Lucky for us it wasn't.
Got some ok footage on the Go Pro. Rather shaky but out of the 30mins I got, 10 or so minutes of good quallity.
Came back down the Standard NASS route and finished up at Backyard Bar in Northcote.
Pretty keen to do it again. Might head out by myself this week if I get some free time.
See everyone on wednesday

Having the L's Angels ride is giving me a target to train towards. I don't want to be the slow or panicking one!!

You wont be either (after 15 minutes) the settling in period when riding within a group is over pretty quick.
On our northland ride last November, an noob ended up leading the ride at one stage... not sure how that happened, when I had caught up and saw what was going on, I did wonder when a more experienced rider was going to get in front, eventually it happened, but I must say that Tara was doing good out in front, nice and constant. She was shitting when I asked her about it. I was about seven bikes back so unable to do anything from there.

Looks like i wont be able to make it to any more NASS sessions - the move to Welly is happening earlier than i thought and time is fast running out.
Great to meet you guys, and thanks for your time and advice Phil.
Good luck down there George. Was always a pleasure riding with you.
Sorry I didn't make it last night. Was way to tied and a bit sunburnt from being out in the sun all day

Well, it looks like it's not that simple to take the seat off a CBR600F3 after all:

Whoever it was on the GSX600F yesterday, I've a really good Haynes maintenance manual for this bike (and associated GSX models) if you need one.

Blipping on the other hand is not as easy as it sounds. I did a few successful on my way to work this morning.
Ooo cheers for that Angel I'll get Brian to check in here.

Hi Angel, that was me (Brian). Awesome, if I could borrow your Haynes manual that would be great thanks. I'll be at the next NASS event (more low speed training required lol).

...and not necessary, only for effect. Same effect can be had by clutchless shifting down, which is so piss easy that it's almost a natural thing to do.
Another thing that makes me smirk is that slalom carry on that some do, thinking they are warmer the tyres up, when most would agree, its done because of boredom.

Yes Phil has explained why it doesn't work to warm up tires. Tbh yeah I do it to practice counter steering or 1 handed. Or just cause I'm bored lol

That's what tyre warmers are for, there is not enough rubber connecting to the road to have any effect, unlike F1/V8 Supercars where they use the technique to great effect. Motorcycle tyres warm up by going around and around
Counter steering happens naturally, it is simple geometry. Some firmly believe they are making it happen, as long as they make a 'conscious' effort to lightly pressure the inside bar whilst cornering, then maybe they are.
Legs and or arse can aid a bike to corner with ease.

Tyre warmers are used on track tyres because track tyres are typically design to operate from 65 degrees Celsius and up and don't work effectively below this temperature. Additionally you don't want your tyres cooling off between sessions, and using up a heat cycle. Tyres designed for the road have more typical operating ranges starting at 30 degrees Celsius, and hence don't require the assistance of tyre warmers.
The majority of motorcycle tyres are constructed radially. As a result weaving wont warm them up. Breaking and accelerating will warm them up. They need the force applied in the direction of travel.
The amount of tyre touching the road has little to do with the tyre temperature. Tyre flex is what causes the majority of the eating effect. Hence the need for breaking and accelerating to heat the tyre.

Sure counter steering happens naturally when everything is working how your brain is expecting. This approach doesn't work when your brain is confronted with a new situation. It's just the way the human brain is built, and we can't change it.
When you are required to think for yourself you can't access those pre-stored "automatic" reactions. And if you don't know how to consciously counter-steer you won't.
Even the simple act of wanting to turning in tighter may not be able to be served by our sub-conscious brain if it hasn't learned this ability yet, and if that is the case, only the conscious brain will be able to respond.

We had a young chap on a learner ride once that had heard about this slalom tyre warming bullshit...he had to pick his bike up off the road 100mts after leaving the lunch break, you may know him Phil, he had GSX250 back then and had been riding about 4 months.

"Angel"?! Well, that's not the worst nickname I've had. I might actually take a liking to it, unless of course, you're dyslexic (in which case I apologise in advance).
'Blipping' is quite simple, most people don't even realise that they're doing it. If you are riding at 60km/h and need to stop at a stop sign 100m away, deciding to deccelerate by changing down (from fourth to first/neutral) you will 'blip' automatically in order to keep the bike running smoothly. So if in such cases you deccelerate smoothly, keep the bike in full control and within normal operating limits, you're doing it right.
...and not necessary, only for effect....
Depends on your riding style. Quite a few riders (i.e. performance oriented L4 riders) prefer this technique when accelerating out of corners. I personally use the clutch for all gear shifts, but than again, I don't often have to change down when entering corners.

Brian, you can have the manual. I'll take it with me next time I come along.

Oh shoot, sorry!! Um just a little, auto correct usually fixes most things for me. But Angel could suit you. Why do they have to make the word dyslexic so difficult to look at!
I have come to the conclusion to not try it on purpose in the wet. What I was doing before (which as you describe I may already be doing it to a degree) works fine while riding in wet at night. bumpity bumpity locking up is not overly fun. May also be because I tried it from 2nd-1st?

Blipping is the only way I've found to smooth out the downshifts (with clutch) on my tractor, otherwise it feels like I'm clunking gears. Don't always get it right, though, not much comes naturally.
Saw the inside of a gearbox for the first time on the weekend, didn't really understand exactly what was going on but he too said the clutch wasn't really necessary for changes.

When you lean into a corner, physics dictates that the leading arm/wrist/elbow combo will apply pressure to that bar, causing the front wheel to counter steer, it is not a conscious (sub or otherwise) decision.

I don't want to argue what you're saying, as you know a lot more than me, but after the counter-steering lesson at NASS, I began trying it on every ride i go on to try and understand it. You're right, it does happen naturally, however it's given me a lot more control being able to ALSO consciously apply counter steering, which I know would help me if I had to swerve around something (e.g a dog) at high speed.

Sure, making a conscious decision the weight either bar in a straight line in a car park will give you the sense of belief that it works, and it does, I am not denying that.
This from a posted a thread about 'Bum Steer' in 2008...
''I've been watching and reading all the countersteering threads of late and someone's comment "... if you're getting around corners, then you must be coutersteering, can't be done otherwise ..." has prompted me to post a counter-view on counter-steering.
I believe the countersteer that initiates the turn is a bad substitute for poor body position and technique. Hence "The Bum Steer". A turn that is initiated by loading up the "inside bum cheek" does not need counter steering input. Before the howls of Indignation and Outrage gather volume, I do agree that you can use small countersteering adjustments. I just don't agree that it is the only way to initiatre a turn ... back to The Bum Steer.
Watch the top racers, watch the best of them Casey Stoner. Their bodies are on the inside of the bike before they tip in for the corner. In other words, they have loaded up the inside bum cheek and their weight is on the inside of the bike. They are pushing the bars up to hold the bike straight waiting for the tip in. It is poised like a cat and being help up from falling into the corner. As soon as the tip in point is reached, the arms are relaxed and the bike falls into the corner using the weight of the rider. Power is applied to hold it from falling too far thus getting the power down early and the bike under perfect control for driving out of the turn.
Think about the dynamics of this. The counter-steer is using gyroscopic precession to apply a directional force from the application of opposing forces. Doing so unsettles the bike, you are applying a side-load to the front tyre that doesn't need to be there. The Bum Steer on the other hand is simply letting the bike fall into a position to cut the corner in a totally natural way. All the forces are acting in unision and towards the apex of the corner. If it didn't work, racers wouldn't be using it (watch the MotoGP slow motions to see it in action).
So, how does this apply to the road. Well I've been using the technique for a year and perfected it on my daily runs over Paekakariki Hill Rd - there's not a better test.
On the road it's not about getting off your seat (but I do that too), it's just about leaning your shoulders to the inside just a fraction as you approach the corner. This loads up the inside bum cheek. When you feel the apex has arrived (and with this technique you can go in much deeper) all you have to do is pull the bike down with you. It's fluid, very quick and brilliantly confidence-building.
The counter-steer by its very nature tips the bike into the corner but leaves the rider upright with the outside bum cheek loaded up! This puts the rider's weight in a place where it is trying to stand the bike up while everything else is trying to get around the corner. It just can't be right.
Again, this is not a Ban Countersteering message. I use it all the time for small adjustments and positioning but I truely believe it is a dangerous practice for tipping into corners - there's too much physics working against the natural dynamics of the bike. You can tell the obsessive counter-steerers, they're the ones who look like motorcrossers when you're following them on the road - body upright while they push the bike down in a desperate attempt to carver the corner.''
