Hey Guys i'm pretty new to biking, been drooling over it all for aeons, got a Hyosung GT250R a couple of weeks back and am looking for a group ride to join.
Is it possible to become a part of this weekend ride? :sweatdrop
Take a look at the Wednesday Street skills rides. They do training and also rides aimed at the restricted riders amoungst us.
Also there are lots of riders that are happy for a ride without the pace needing to be too fast. Put up a post.
NASS is the North Auckland Street Skills search for it.

My experience on KB group rides is that the pace is somewhat spirited.
You get to meet some great people and ride some fantastic roads.
Much as people like to say "ride your own ride" there is an element of wanting to keep up with the group and some people will invariably push beyond their limits.
I've been guilty of this myself and fortunately through more good luck that good management have avoided any accidents.
First time I took my old 400 for an out of town ride I was trying to keep up with a friend and found myself on the wrong side of the road exiting a corner.
If I'd have been through there 2 seconds before or after I'd been a hood ornament.
Unless a ride is advertised as learner friendly I'd recommend against it until you are confident with open road riding.

Just wondering if you were organising a ride today and if so could I tag along, as I am desperate for a ride out but my missus doesn't like me going out for a long ride on my own. If you are going can you either call me on 021744101 or just email me back.

they have better things to to than that and all they do is pass it onto the inquiry section to follow up and all you do when they send out a letter is forget to send it back.
also my rego is not for home so they can go wait at the post box or work.

We will be there (me and the missis). 28 days has been a life time not being able to ride but it does seem to have gone over quickly.
we just live down the road from the gas station so it is just a quick trip up there (not so quick now).

No i wasn't meaning you was just saying. if you think you go slow maybe i don't go as fast as i thought (cop did).
read the thread that just sucks. i have done that a few times at work, why they put high tensile bolts in aluminium is beyond me.
you could try loctite, they make a lot of diferent stuff to hold screws in place, also you could try their quk-metal and then get it fixed properly when it gets a service.

If i ride like a nutter tell me as i have only been riding on road for a year and if there is a problem with the way i ride let me know and i can fix it.

You won't regret it. I think the way you ride on the road you will be fine in group 3 and will get the most benefit from there. But we can always move you around so don't feel like you are stuck there if you feel its too fast, or you can ask to start in group 2 if you like and we would also move you up if need be.
We are pretty keen to separate bikes/riders according to ability so don't worry, unlike some other track days, you will end up in the right group for you.

I figured I was the one having the most fun ( ie. being the nutter )
Unfortunately, I can't make it this weekend - my daughter's birthday and I'll need to help chaperone and transport 14 teenagers around. Otherwise I would have tried for a spot at the ART day as well.
The next one is March 6 I think - I'll sign up for that when it is available. Just gotta decide on group 2 or 3 :)
Hopefully I'll be there for the 24th.
Have Fun,

To those people who don't come on the ride but have thought about it, just do it. I happily admit I am the slowest of the people who go on the ride. But I just do the "ride your own ride", and it doesn't matter if I can't keep up with the group (I know I am mortal). I know they'll wait for me somewhere up ahead.
But there is something about riding with people more experienced than yourself. It might be osmosis, but watching what others do does help. Today my riding had a break through, and its simply because of coming along and joining in.
I usually ride 3 or 4 days a week, but after my recent sump plug error, I've been off the road for 3 weeks. I don't know what it is, but having had a "holiday" from riding seems to have really improved things! I had an absolute blast today.
I think several little things have come together all at the same time, and my riding is suddenly on the verge of going to a new level. I wonder if perhaps by having a forced holiday, and not devoting attention to all the things I've been trying to work on I have somehow managed to encompass the bigger picture.
Typically on Woodcocks I only use 2nd and 3rd. Today I was using 1-3 extensively, and a little bit of fourth, and using a high higher portion of the rev range than normal.
For some reason I was clutchless shifting coming out of the corners. I didn't plan to do it. It just started happening. I didn't bother with pre-loading. I can't explain why, but for some reason it just felt "right".
I don't usually bother with clutchless shifting much because I figure it only saves me a tiny amount of time, but I think what it did was smooth out the power delivery while powering out of the corner. I don't know. Whatever it was, it feels much better.
Also blipping at higher revs (would normally be riding at lower revs) when downshifting seems to make the bike feel much more smoother.
I've started shifting my body weight more (the kiss the mirror thing) as well. I still haven't quite got something right though. I think I'm doing it ok for a single corner (well it feels much better than it did before), but when I thread corners I don't feel I'm shifting my body weight from one side of the bike to the other properly. My gut feeling is it has something to do with my use of the pegs. I don't know enough to figure out why or what I'm not doing wrong there. Might have to wait until I run into OutForADuck.
I'm thinking that my actual speed through the corners on woodcocks was not actually any faster (don't really know, wasn't really looking at the speedo, too busy looking at the next couple of corners coming up to plan my line), but rather than using maybe 80% of my ability level it felt more like 50% today. I think that the additional free attention span probably helped a lot as well.
And the other big thing is I felt tremendously more confident. And I don't think I was being over confident. I don't think I can suddenly push everything harder, it's just that the handling of the bike and the whole experience seem to be working "better".
I experienced mild head shake coming out of a couple of corners today as well. I'm thinking that I might not be leaning far enough forward, or perhaps I'm on the edge of the amount of throttle I should be using, or maybe it's ok and I don't need to change anything. It didn't feel out of control, and it did not concern me. It corrects itself very quickly.
What a day. Thanks for the great ride everyone!

Hey P.dath.. sounds like you had a little revelation!!! :msn-wink:
So was I right about your gears or was I right..... I Know its good for the soul to gloat
Don't worry about the head shake... get a steering damper.
Not being able to thread more than one or two corners together as smoothly as you'd like when first starting to move your weight around is all about practice and timing. You move your weight to gain stability but you are slow and not triming it right and so it takes practive to do it between corners and not introduce some instability.... itll come. (I think that is some sort of sorded street qoute, but Í'll avoid the obvious laugh to be had ).
Myself I was not with you guys because I buggered off to Taupo by every back road that I could find. GPS in my position and lightly loaded I covered some simply amazing roads, spent three tanks fulls of petrol and the spent a relaxing weekend with a hottub in my hotel room :bleh:
Will be needing two new tyres now though.... barely (yes that was a pun on words) got back without the back delaminating. Nothing like a little sacrificial rubber :nono:
See you guys out during the week or on the Greath Northern Tour if you're going.
Cheers.

What a day. Thanks for the great ride everyone!
I have the same problems so thats why we're doing the superbike school in march. after the track day in manfield i had learnt so much more than the whole time i have been riding, i think it was not worrying about other cars coming towards me.
Like you i have started to use lower gearing in coners (never higher than 4th at manfield) and shifting my weight although it doesn't always work out, need more practice.
I one thing i have found is i have learnt is if i practice on a road i know well i can tell if something was better or worse straight away and adjust or if it goes "pear shaped" i know whats coming up.
How i just have to learn this leaning the bike right over thing (maybes a trip for some leathers is coming up)
As i told Mrs boris my big break though was when i stopped riding like i drive a car, something are the same corners aren't one of them.
Glad you had a great ride and hope to see you guys next week.

No it's $800b for 2 days. Not attending it simply because it has the name 'superbike' in it is quite silly imo. All their track bikes are Gixxer 600's so super-sport not superbike. You can do it on whatever bike you have and trust me if you think you have a lot to learn, from what I have seen and heard you will be under the best instruction money can buy. Talk to Darren or Rachel, both top people.

Hey P.dath Glad you had a blast. I enjoyed it too, tagging along behind the Y man. He showed me some good lines through Woody. I was busy getting used to the new bike and oddly enough the new road having not done that one before. (Being from south of the bridge and that).
The odd thing with the Italian jobbie that I'm riding is the gearbox. Lots of cogs in that box all squashed together so I was busy like a dog with an itch through the twisties. I had no idea what gear I was in really just listening to the feedback from the motor and watching Yatchies lines. Sounds like you are starting to find it comning together eh, cool.
You are right you dont particularly need to go fast to have a blast, its all relative. My old ZRX1100, awesome bike, but it used to shake around a lot both front and back when pushed hard (one reason whay I got shut of it for a machine that handles). If you are a bit bothered by that head shake im sure one of the trackday regulars or ART guys can take it for a spin and tell you what tweaks it needs.

Thanks for the ride today guys. Had a blast!!
First 'proper' one of these Ive actually managed to do, where most of the main protagonists were actually there; and surprise surprise, it turns out that I actually know yachtie quite well from other parts of life (though I didnt ever know he was into bikes!! LOL).
Anyways, a great day, some mint roads, pizza was pretty good, good company, nice pace, and the traffic wasnt too bad either. Really enjoyed woodcocks, and Cove Road back from Waipu through to Mangawai Heads was good fun too!!
Boris; Plugz4Lugz are the mob that did my ear plugs. They do an earphone version as well. Works well, but they aint that cheap. Ive tried normal in-ear phones, and IF they stay sealed when I put my helmet on, then they work well. But I have major issues with them getting knocked out etc when I stick my lid on. The Plug4Lugz dont move and block heaps of noise (probably have the music player set to about 1/4 - 1/3 volume usually, and thats plenty loud enough). Im also tempted to just do L1 on the Friday, as I reckon that would be neat fun doing it with you guys!!

went to the bike shop yesterday and they said the fault sounds like the kill switch. if it gets knocked (possable) or there is a broken wire somwhere when it dies you need to reset the ignition, which i did.
Its going in on Thurs for is service so they will have a good look at it then.

I understand, but have you read the first thread for this ride?
"You should be capable of riding at open road speeds and hopefully be able to ride at your own pace (this means not trying to keep up with the rider in front if it is to fast for you)
Don't worry we will wait for you"
I guess you and your mates will be off buy yourself and i wish you a safe and well ride.
I know the rest of the guys here have been riding a lot longer and know you better than i do but we all have to start somewhere and this is the first time i have seen this attitude on this thread.
You seem to have enough mates to ride with so i would never expect to see you on this ride as you might have to wait for someone.
If you take this post the wrong way then i am sorry it is not meant as a go at you just a plain observation and i might not be getting you from your post.

Haha yea mate, you misunderstood. I am not trying to sound smug. This ride is not organised by me. I was simply using this thread to advertise a ride me and 2 other buddies were going on that day and wanted some more people who could ride comfortably at a legal pace. We pretty much hold the max speed limit throughout our ride. When I ride socially however I am more than happy to wait for any stragglers. Sometimes I am the straggler. Depending on how fast you choose to ride, I have my limitations and know my boundaries :D You are right, some others on this ride know me better and know that I do wait when needed. I'm sure you will find my online persona a pleasant contrast to my real life personality :D
PS: now go bait someone who doesn't have over 2,000 posts

If you only hold the speed limit in your ride then you would be holding everyone up even me so it think you should go to the newbee threads. (now thats baiting):p
