Think of it as product testing Boris... now when you replace them you know they work :bleh: Hmmm maybe more thumb protection ?

I would have rather not known if they worked or not.

But i was thinking it was a noob mistake then i realized it is only my second set of tires and M run most of the the set in.

Can you scrub them any other way? like with a bit of sand paper?

Not really it is more to do with heat cycles than roughing them up. which is why you can crank them over even when you haven't done that lean before and not slide down the road because even that part of the tyre has gone through a few heat cycles, even though may not have been scrubbed on the road yet.

Somewhere I have a tyre manufactorer description of what happens when you "scrub"in tyres... If i can find it I'll send it through... very interesting but has to do with sweating out oils and slight changes in rubber because of the heat.

The best way to quickly scrub a tyre in is to find some gravel and go for a ride on it.

Yeah I think I'll be there.

Took the T675 out today for a testing day... Raining when I arrived, but dry and fast when I did my last session and a dry line for the entire day. T was rocking along and only a couple of small things I need to tweak for the new season. Had an indicated 158Mph down the back straight on a couple of runs which was pretty comforting :bleh:.

Nackered now, was a 2am night last night as well... so with new Michelin Pure on the back (just had to copy you Boris) I'll be in the placid mood tomorrow I am sure .

See you guys there.

Yep, nice ride today everyone :sunny:

And, thanks for the suspension assistance. I checked the manual and the standard setting for the rebound damping is 1 turn anti-clockwise back from full. Mine was initially set another turn and a half back, so way too soft. We ended up today at only -1/2 turn back so perhaps a bit hard.

Compression damper has 25 clicks stop-to-stop with standard at 10 back from full. We ended up at 4 from full, so again possibly a bit hard. I'm now sitting at standard so we'll see how it goes. Certainly doesn't feel bouncy any more.

Apparently the damper uses compressed nitrogen. You learn something new every day

Big thank you to yachtie for the tank bag, it came up like brand new after a wash.

I think I had my second best ride today ever.

I had a lot of things all seem to come together today and felt like I crossed through a barrier. I "know about" kissing the mirrors, but today I found myself doing it without thinking, and it changed tight corners from needing a lot of counter steering input to almost needing nothing and being effortless. I was sitting on the bike in a slightly different position than normal, lowering down a little bit more, and for some reason when I was looking through the corners I was seeing things differently from before.
I do have a cortisone dificiency which was diagnosed about 3 months ago. One of the things cortisone does is trigger the release of blood sugars for the brain to use. So when you have a cortisone dificiency it makes it more difficult for your brain to concentrate and take in information. Perhaps having medication to correct this has aided in the changes as well.

I don't know what it was overall. But it was a great day for me.

27th September 2010, 05:55
Sounds like we all had a pretty good day!!! Before I got to the end of your post P.Dath I was going to say its probably just the drugs :innocent:

Was good to ride in the sun, have good roads and great people around me. The Pizza was a bonus as was seeing likes of you out and about Dumpty and finding that Boris was just being a girl over a slight polish to his ride (Hardly call THAT crash damage  ).

Coffee and a BS session being kindly supplied by Mom was a bonus.

Ntox, looks like you might just be riding on a different motorcycle soon as you get the setup sorted. Got the front put back to standard settings as well? Nick will sort you on Sunday.

Thanks guys for a top weekend ender, it was a great weekend for me, starting with Hinny Friday night and a few drinks over MotoGP (and courtesy of Ntox WSBK footage), then a great testing day at Pukekohe and all topped off by a ride in the sun with you guys (and of course ... Pizza :innocent:).

Top day, top weekend. Cheers.

P.S. we missed you out there Zeal, I think you'll find a good few regulars at the ART day.

Hey peterpan, I suspect that was a different ride. It was for the launch of MAG-NZ. Like p.dath says, check the first post that has the where and when details for usual ride.

Would hate for you to turn up at Albany when you need to be in Dairy Flat.

The ride you saw yesterday from Albany was the north arm of a 4 points of the compass ride to Drury where we launched MAG-NZ. www.mag-nz.org. Everyone is welcome on these rides too. If you join up you will get notified of what rides/events we are planning.

Hey Peterpan, there is the Pink Ribbon Ride on Sunday that you could go on - should be heaps of bikes there and you could meet up with a bunch of us at Silverdale - at the garden centre car park at the bottom of East Coast Road in Silverdale - 9am Sunday - then we head off to meet with the others in St Johns.

Guys, what a fun ride yesterday. Everyone rode well and no silly buggers or lunatic (oh I guess I was there wasn't I ). Thank you for indulging my trip to the painters, I hope that Paparoa rd was a good enough reward

Summer riding season is definitely here, I couldn't beleive how many bikes I came across on the way home through old north et al.

Ignoring the shoddy lines, how close is this rFactor version of Taupo to the track in real life?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QhNaGmnwdOs?hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QhNaGmnwdOs?hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

OutForADuck
12th October 2010, 20:11
Yeah pretty close.. but there a a couple of variations of course (Track 1-5). This just shows one of them. the fences are not there as well, thank God.

The 19th is Track 5 I believe Track 5 (http://www.motott.co.nz/MotoTT-Track-5.gif) which you will find only really differs because of the T14 Wiggle placed into the back straight.

Its a nice track.. no elevation involved but a lovely track with some reasonably technical skill level, but not hamptons. Good traction once the early sessions are out of the way (gets chalk dust on it with the wind and takes a while to "sweep" in the first few sessions). You'll love it... hadn't realised you've never been on Taupo.. Good to see you've been studying up :innocent:

Would be an awesome track to ride.

Many years ago on a real super bike ( Katana 1100 homologation model) I tried to scare myself silly (Especially through turn 1).

But that is almost beyond memory being sometime in the very early 80's and I'm sure I was much slower than I recall

Definitely keen for the MotoGP. Track day would be AU$640 including bike+gear hire. (Although, I reckon somebody would get pinged the extra levy for excessive tyre wear ) Add in the extra week accomodation costs and it starts to add up.

Hiya all, any interest in doing a ride round the eastern bays using the following route:

starts
Howick centre
Whitford,
Maraitai,
Clevedon,
kawakawa bay,
Miranda Hot Springs
Hunua Falls,
Brookby
finish at Otara

Have done the route a few times and the roads are really good with no gravel, and good for all levels of riders.
Miranda is a nice place to stop for lunch and the rides about 4 hrs if you include a few breaks to take in the scenery lol. Just putting it out there as a one off alternative to the northern routes....thanks for looking

Man what a fun day that was. Lots of fun riding within the pack and seeing how fantastically competent you all are as riders, even those pretty new to riding.

I had a ball and as always you guys tempted me away from any hope of being a sensible man

Life passing before my eyes courtesy of the 4x4 that thought he was in the states (whilst a avoiding Dave) was a bit of a highlight as well and good to see that my ridgid lines paid dividends in the fact I'm still breathing

For those down at Taupo this week if you need small things carried down get them to me before Wednesday see you guys down there

Things are so different when you are on the brakes and focussed on slowing things down

got some really interesting data log info from the Friday and as per usual if you slow down its amazing how you go faster, fastest laps had the lowest corner entry speeds.

Also last session I mistakeninly switched the GPS log to 1Hz mode (like an IPhone) and the data is almost unusable.. its all over the place.

Nice Vids guys. Both from puke and Hampton downs. Must have a chat with you sometime regards what cams you are using and how you are mounting.

Apologies that I haven't been out to play but as you may know, someone else decided that they needed my precious more than I did. :-(

Still working through insurance processes at the moment (damned statutory declarations needing JP witnessing... Grrrr). But hopefully sorted soon.

You guys got any thoughts on what I should replace the daytime orange beastie with? I'm thinking along the lines of: cbr600rr 08/09/10, triumph 675 (couple of beautiful SE 2010s on tardme at mo), duc 848, or potentially I have heard mutterings that the new mv Augusta 600 might not be badly priced either. The new aprillia appeals but I think I'm better off with a middleweight with my size / build. Also keep in mind that I've not ridden or sat on any of them bar the Suzie or Honda. And (sorry Boris) the Suzie just didn't light my candle when I rode it. So all thoughts and suggestions appreciated. But do keep in mind that I do about 50/50 rides / commuting!!

Hoppy.

I'm not sure the bigger bikes (litre+) are necessarily much bigger in terms of weight/height etc. Wiki quotes dry weight of latest CBR1000RR at 175kg as opposed to CBR600RR at 172.8kg.

1000cc motor must be lighter than 600cc 'cos it has bigger holes in it

Dude that would have to be described as an electic list if every I saw one.... you need to decide what you like, these things are radically different.

Personally amongst those the 848 is head and shoulders in my opinion, but then I like Dukes and Twins in general.... the 675 is a blast as a track bike but unless you are tiny not much for the road. my track photo's look like I will need it surgically removed from my butt afterwards :innocent:

I also agree with Ntox 1000's make so much sense on the road...

Yes, I made the connection after I booked it. There is of course the option of moving Taupo from Sat Jan 29 to Fri Feb 11. Fridays are potentially less crowded as well as being 20% cheaper.

BoristheBiter
19th December 2010, 10:14
That was basically my list when i was looking, the Duc was too expensive, i didn't fit the 675, aprillia i couldn't find a new one and then the gixxer came up and was such a good price.
If i had the money i would go for the 1198 Duc.

Bloody good fun. I started on the KDX200 (2 smoker with kick start) but I struggled with the ergonomics. I couldn't stand comfortably. And I kept stalling it at the wrong times resulting in having to pick it up and kick start it again. The WR250 was waaaaay better. I could have ridden that comfortably all day. We got absolutely soaked, but the puddles just made it much more fun. The only problem was the rain in the eyes on some of the faster sections. Tony was excellent giving us some training to start with then leading us around for a while. I'm certainly keen to get out there again :2thumbsup

Boris; 1198 is a lot of bike, 848 is alot more manageable (price as well), you better be ready for riding one of those babies, given the list would be a hell of a jump.

No I couldn't be bothered spending $200 to play around a wet track... so I stayed home. Will look at the beginning of Jan to get out again before the next ART.

If your a racer you need to ensure you are fast in the wet.. if your a track day junkie you can comfortably pass :innocent:

I really want to do the Northern Exposure so am thinking Taupo on the 11th. Boris were you heading that way for something else? Or just the track day? Is the 11th out for you?

Boris.. Northern Exposure mate.. come meet more like minded KB'ers, ride great roads.. make up rediculous stories of near misses, swim home through torrential rain.... oh wait that was last year

Was thinking about heading south on boxing day ( not sure where too yet maybe coromandel?) where ever my wee girl feels like going :-)
if the weather looks dodgy and i decide to stay closer to home i'll be keen for a ride on any of the 3 days

I can't do ART in Jan as i will be doing the desert storm ride and as M will be on days from the end of Jan and my offsider at work will be on holiday so it would make it a bit hard to do it on a Friday.

If you want to do the NE then just do it. we won't be there as we are not big group people, don't know why just aren't, but have fun.

I think it is time for you to get back on the dirt bike, now long has it been?
You know how much fun it is and it gives you something to ride in the wet and Tussuck buster is on at the end of march.:woohoo:

Dude that would have to be described as an electic list if every I saw one.... you need to decide what you like, these things are radically different.

Personally amongst those the 848 is head and shoulders in my opinion, but then I like Dukes and Twins in general.... the 675 is a blast as a track bike but unless you are tiny not much for the road. my track photo's look like I will need it surgically removed from my butt afterwards :innocent:

I also agree with Ntox 1000's make so much sense on the road...

Ntox, OFAD, & Boris,

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Appreciated.

Naked bikes. No thanks. Not my cuppa. Plus fairings are better on wet days

I need to go for a ride on the duc I think. I may hate it :gob:
The 1198 (or 1098); from what Ive read, the 848 is the better road bike. To be honest, the 848 is getting significantly on the pricey side for me. Both from the POV of that amount of capital tied up in 'a bike', as well as in actual $$ terms. I havent really seen any around 2nd hand and I aint shelling out $25k on a new one. The Aprilla falls in the same category really (but aint it nice at least putting them on the list LOL).

The 749's aren't quite so pretty, and again the only ones that seem to be around is 03-04 stuff, and thats starting to get a bit on the old side. But they are an option. So the ducs really only there as a (semi) dream option. The other struggle I have there is that commuting on the duc seems like it would be committing a crime worthy of capital punishment :scooter:

1k bikes. Hmmm. Not sure. The consumables seem to go up significantly on the thou's. Chains, tyres, sprockets, gas ($2.06 a litre yesterday, shudder). The 600's are pretty thrashable (I come from a 250 stroker background) and dont bite too hard if you mess it up. I could see myself getting into serious trouble (or hurt) on a thou.

The MV would be nice I think. Though again, probably not much of a commuter, and who knows when / if they arrive, and what sort of price they will finally be.

675. This is probably the other one a I really want a ride on, and its a serious option I think. Duck, dude, I AM tiny. Im 5'6-7, and weigh 61kg!! One big concern for me, having a sit on one when I got the CBR, was that the seat height is another 5mm or so over the CBR. I felt very on tipey-toe on the CBR and just didnt feel I could manage the 675 at the time. I might feel differently this time round, especially as I typically had quite a high ride height on the CBR. Other concern I have about the 675 is that Ive seen a few mutterings that the rear shock on them is pretty crappy and that they are quite stiffly spring (there goes another $500 for re-springing, and if Im pulling shocks / forks, I might as well do CKT work again).

And of course, the good ol faithful CBR. Easily commutable. Reliable. Quick. Plentiful. Parts are easy. But they dont stir the soul like the italian bikes (or my car; ive lived with one for 12 years, so I know a little about temperamental italians ).

Other option might be a commuter and then a play bike, but thats doubling the rego load, and its hilly where I live, so a 50cc 2T or 125 4T scooter isnt really a very good option

sigh...

To give you an good idea.. the 675 is setup pretty much perfectly for the track.. suspension wise i Hardly did anything to my track bike which probably make it a little stiff and narrow focussed for the road.

Steering et al works best at 100% commitment. Very flexible motor but so are the later model R6's or CBR's (Less so the CBR's). High piston speed on the T's so I would wonder about longevity, mind you when I blew the head gastket on the track bike local triumph dealers had never had the head off one!!!!

Seat hight is a little higher and combined with firm suspension you might have issues, just depends on your comfort/confidence levels on your toes :shit:

I'm still a fan of the 1000's, tyres do chew through faster (depending on your right hand) but fuel economy is usually better and I find my chains last longer on the bigger bikes (bigger chains as well you see). The engine are less stressed and more flexible for road work and much happier in most situations.

God my SF (181RWHP) can comfortably get 40+mph ridden sensibly (Yeah like that happens often - but I do get 40+ often).

Don't rule out the aprilia, they aren't ducati expensive (2nd hand anyway) - quite reasonably priced if you check trademe. For 10k ish you'll get an R with all the fruit. They have a rotax motor that will last forever , and the few niggles (electrical mainly) are easy to sort if they haven't already.

If you want to have a test ride I'm quite happy to oblige :D

In regards to coro loop, M says she can do the 28 as she is off but not to change it for her as we can go for a ride north, or somewhere else on the 28.

I'd be up for both

(BTW I expect that this won't be an open pub.... I haven't checked but its a good carpark to finish at for everyone).

Go our separate ways from there. A long but hopefully fun filled day. Can I also suggest that we run a tail end charlie and a system of charge and wait so that we are never so far apart and to cater for fast and slow riders.

Remember... if it was arranged here.. then probably the local :Police: know were going to be there so bring a good attitude.

As for the ride just go like we normally do on a sun and take turns as TEC

The mrs has just advised we're staying the night of the 26th up north. So no chance of making it down in time for the ride :crybaby:

Hopefully I can get along to another ride soonish (there's mention of a north ride later that week?).

Have fun (but not too much :( )
