Quote.
His competitive career commenced at age four. As his mother started to ready him on the start line he started to cry. Some of the other parents looked at her askance assuming that Stoner was being pushed into racing. “The thing was, I knew Casey wasn't crying because he didn't want to ride or because he was scared. He just didn't like the attention of being stared at by all those people.”

Stoner had difficulties at school, being small he was subjected to bullying, he hated school. By the time he got to high school his antipathy to schooling was such that physical symptoms were manifesting themselves. His parents withdrew him from school and his mother undertook to home school him. Quote.

That rumour was posted on Twitter this morning, I don't know where it originated but my source was British (bennetts.co.uk). They say the rumour has been boosted by a post from Mark Webber who has signed for Porsche in the same series. He said, "Great to hear Farrari looking to return to Le Mans too??? Should get this quote right, it's cut and paste.

This from Gigi Dall'Igna on his appointment to Ducati.

"I will start with organization. There are two completely different units inside Ducati Corse. One is the racetrack unit, and the other is the people who live in Bologna. The first job will be to properly join these two areas to improve the flow of information from the racetrack to the people who work at Ducati. After that, I have to work on the technical problems."

That puzzled me as I was under the impression that the Ducati front end was the urgent problem.

Yesterday I was listening to an interview on a Motopod podcast where it was claimed that Warren Willing was hired to sort some problems for Ducati. On his return home he was asked something to the effect about how many of his recommendations had been acted upon. The answer was basically none. The comment was also made that both Hayden and Dovi were depressed that information passed back from the track produced no meaningful results.

The comment was also made that Preziosi was replaced but as yet there had been no improvement so the problem appeared to originate somewhere other than with him.

Here's hoping the new broom can sweep clean.

The biggest problems at Ducati have always been

people
organisation

The first was pretty much Preziosi. He is a brilliant and imaginative Engineer, but he took advice as criticism, is a stubborn and arrogant Italian male and believed that the riders have to adapt to the bike no matter how difficult it is to ride.

For the second Gigi is well onto it by joining the separate bits of Ducati Corse so they work together.

After the personnel and organisation are sorted the bike can be fixed.

Maybe they should take a look at what KTM have done with their AMA Supercross team led by 'The Man'.
Under his leadership they went from also rans to title contenders and title winners in a matter of just a couple of years.

Dirty GP riders?

Hope there is sufficient English coverage because the final should be interesting.

There are three classes: the Superprestigio which is limited to GP riders (all classes). I don't see Rossi in the entries, surprising considering he races flat track on his ranch.
There is an invitation only Open class which includes the current US flat track champ and the instructor from Colin Edwards ranch Merle Scherb. No Tai Woffinden though.
There is an invitation only Junior class.

Top qualifiers from each class meet in a combined final.

Marquez is reviving a series that used to run annually in Spain apparently.

I don't read Spanish but I think this all happens 11 Jan Barcelona time.

I think when Rossi/Burgess failed to fix the Ducati, most people who didn't appreciate just how good he was re-evaluated Stoner's efforts as a rider.
The surly demeanour didn't help but having read his book I can understand it, although it still doesn't make him loveable.

It'd have to be a real hard liner who was still refusing to acknowledge his ability.

MM looks like he was born on a flat track. Would love to see Stoner give him a go.

Well him and Brad Baker were just clearing out, no one else was as quick, but shame he came off on the wrong side of the tangle, but I doubt Marc was concerned about that.

Mt Briggs is a gentlemen though, and I did receive a reply. Not that he's giving much away

Robert, tell me why a top lever racer that can and did, beat the best again and again on a bike no one else can ride, would develop the bike so others can win on it?, by implication you would also be including Rossi as having "the mechanical appreciation of an elephant".

Despite the stats blatantly showing Stoner is a faster/better racer than Rossi (Rossi fans love stats...the fav being the old 9 titles trick), they'll never be man enough to admit it. Because Rossi was just so...so...so god damn gayly flamboyant! And if anyone dare to suggest Rossi was actually over rated as a development rider...especially as they've taken great delight over the years in claiming Stoner to be so...look out! Now here's one for ya. HRC still want Stoner to stay on as more than likely...THE test rider. Do you think Yamaha will do the same with Rossi when he retires? Maybe Ducati will? My guess is...nah.

I don't think it mattered who was riding the Duc as far as development goes 'cause the factory didn't listen.
When Stoner won they congratulated themselves because the bike was obviously a winner.
When he crashed it was deemed to be his fault.
Either way, no changes were necessary in their mind.

Rossi's reputation as a development took a major hit. Although various bits were replaced in respnse to his criticisms, the problems as yet remain unsolved.

Hope Ducati can get it sorted soon as it would be a shame to lose them, and Malborough are reportedly becoming impatient.

Hahahaha!, Yamaha would trample over Rossi's upturned arse to have Stoner ride the bike, HRC want Stoner for a reason, and it aint cause he gives woodies to the groupies in yellow......... I wonder if there is a secret clause in Stoners test contract that allows for him to ride the bike if Ped or MM get hurt............. Tonight,I thought Casey was acting weird. We made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner.
Conversation wasn't flowing,so I suggested we go somewhere quiet so we could talk.
He agreed, but didn't say much.I asked him what was wrong; He said "nothing".I asked "if it was my fault that he was upset"?
He said he wasn't upset'that it had nothing to do with me,and not to worry about it.

On the way home I told him that I love him.He smiled slightly and kept driving.
I can't explain his behaviour,I don't know why he didn't say I love you to.
When we got home I felt that I had lost him completely,as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore.
He just sat there quietly and watched TV.He continued to seem distant and absent, finally with silence all around us,I went to bed.
About 15 minutes later,he came to bed.But I still felt he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else.

He fell asleep-I cried.I don't know what to do.I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else.
My life is a disaster.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season

The lil' Aussie battler was only 4th in the 2010 standings. Lorenzo slaughtered everyone, scoring 383 points, while the 'strayan managed just 225. The other Yamaha rider, I forget his name now, broke his leg, missed 4 races and still came in ahead of the Aussie kid.

I don't particularly care for the wog or the dingo but the D16 was undeniably a piece of poo and only getting pooier by the time the wog climbed aboard.

Note: names have been omitted to protect the women and children from the inevitable blood letting.

I have had it for the past two years and I've been very happy with it. Watch all the practices, qualifiing, and races live, or whenever you can. Access to all the past races back to early 2000's, so you can go back and relive (or see for the first time) some of those classic races people are always talking about.

Have had a few issues while trying to stream the live races this past year, but I detirmined that the problem was with my computer/internet connection. Also, need to make sure you have a half decent broadband plan with good speed so that you can see it in HD. Then grab a HDMI cable, hook it up to your TV, and watch it in 50" glory.

C'mon mate, it's not hard to get this stuff right....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season

The lil' Aussie battler was only 4th in the 2010 standings. Lorenzo slaughtered everyone, scoring 383 points, while the 'strayan managed just 225. The other Yamaha rider, I forget his name now, broke his leg, missed 4 races and still came in ahead of the Aussie kid.

I don't particularly care for the wog or the dingo but the D16 was undeniably a piece of poo and only getting pooier by the time the wog climbed aboard.

Note: names have been omitted to protect the women and children from the inevitable blood letting.

I meant he was third in the last race of the season. Mate

Was Ok last year except for the "away" leg: Australian, Malaysian, and Japanese races. Got a bit close to my limit there.

Depends on how vain one is I guess. He's got a factory seat that he wanted so badly (not the best factory option, but still) and they now have a lead hand that may actually get a bike working (Dall'Igna) and Cal is most likely going to be a key part of the team evaluating different parts and concepts. Might actually feel like he has some input into things, instead of just endlessly fiddling with setup and never testing anything new as he would with the satellite Yamaha.

The Diary of Mr & Mrs Caseyfromwayback...

Pete's Diary:

Casey's Diary:
Motorcycle won't handle...can't figure out why,and Pete wont shut the fuck up.

I hate Ducati. You can prolly tell. I can't help but wonder if that has something to do with my lack of sympathy for Stoner.

Going Open class doesn't give the Ducatis any advantage in the engine/fuel area. About the only thing it would help with is the softer tyre that's available for the Open class. A softer front could help with the front end problems they've had on that thing since forever, but it won't cure it. However, a softer tyre on the back end could make their front truly horrible/dangerous.

As for concentrating on one class it's not a bad idea. I'm certain that Gigi Dal'Ignia can sort out all of Ducati's racing woes, but trying to sort MotoGP and WSBK at the same time he could be spreading himself too thin. However, the Ducatis are right at the front in most domestic competitions (along with Kawasakis and BMWs) that use the EVO style rules so it's quite likely he won't have to do much there.

Does this dislike for Ducati come from lots of crashing that bent pile of shit you raced??

EDIT Actually there is an engine advantage in Ducati going Open class - there's an engine development freeze on the factory bikes but not the Open class. That could end up being a huge advantage.

Going Open class doesn't give the Ducatis any advantage in the engine/fuel area.

It does give them an extra 4 litres of fuel to play with, at the downside of using spec ECU and software. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the Ducati electronics are the least advanced of the factories, so maybe that won't hurt them all that much.

A softer front could help with the front end problems they've had on that thing since forever, but it won't cure it. Open class will have the same choice in the front tire as the Factory bikes (soft and hard) where as on the rear the have the choice between extra-soft and soft. The factory bikes have a choice between soft and hard on the rear. So everyone will still only have two fronts and two rears to choose from, the Open boys just getting a step down on softness with the rear.

Somewhere (can't remember where now) I read a comment from Hayden saying that he would really like to try the extra-soft rear that the CRT's were running (this was obviously last season when he was still with Ducati). His reasoning was that the Ducati almost always ran with the soft rear option, but was still have trouble with the rear pumping and spinning up, the CRT extra-soft rear may give them the extra grip to keep from spinning up. I would hazard a guess that their spinning problems are partly due to a shorter swingarm than the Honda and Yamaha along with a harsher power delivery (not as advanced TC system).

I would suspect that this last bit would be the biggest advantage to Ducati. They will be able to expiriment throughout the season trying to smooth out power delivery (through internal engine work) as well as fiddling with engine placement in the frame (which would probably require new cases) and having an allowance of 12 engines would mean that they try something new every other race......

IMHO the only downside to going Open would be the outsiders preception, as well as having to admit publicly they are struggling and need help. This may actually be a really good thing for Dal'Ignia to force them to do, swallow some of their pride and work their asses off in a cooperative way to get themselves competative. Use 2014 as a testing year and come up with some solutions, step back up to Factory status in 2015 and compete evenly again with Yamaha and Honda. The first thing they have to do is admit that there is a problem with the bike, going Open class would do that.......

Thing is their engine already runs extremely well on 21 litres so the extra fuel is useless for power, but it can help make up for the less advanced electronics by making the mixture rich on the overrun to help with engine braking and things like that.

It's a matter of physics. The amount of energy in fuel is a known quantity and that takes a known amount of air to etc. Subtract losses due to friction etc and apparently Ducati are very close to optimal.

Besides, power has never been a problem for the Ducati's, using the power they make is.

Yeah but you're assuming they don't lean it off towards the end of the race etc if they're getting low on fuel...plus...they're going down to 20l this year too no? Oh yeah, with regards to rich/lean fuel mixtures. If they can afford to dump fuel on over run and cool the exhaust valves, then more power can be extracted from the current motors. At 21/20 litres that simply isn't an option.

No one is getting maximum energy from the fuel they burn. 100% efficiency is impossible in an internal combustion engine with current materials known to man.

Pretty sure that's lease only. So you keep the bike but give the gearbox back.

A great article, as usual, from David.

One thing that's only just occurred to me is that the Yamaha's high-corner-speed style--as well as being the preference of the Yamaha engineers, of Jorge and of Valentino before him--is forced on them by the need to save fuel: you go as fast as possible thru the corners to minimise the fuel used in accelerating up to speed out of the corner. Why do they need to do it when Honda don't? Well, maybe Honda do have better engineers. But the Yamaha has an extra shaft to reverse the engine rotation direction, and this soaks up (to the best of my memory) 3-5% of the power. The Yamaha design was brilliantly successful when it was introduced in 2004, but right now with the fuel limits it's going up a blind alley.

At €1.2M you'd want the choice of who changes the oil to be yours.

The 125 class is meant to be low cost, leasing a bike for >$1M isn't low cost. The top class has always been much more expensive. Even if rules are put in place that make it cheaper MotoGP is always going to be at least 10x more expensive than Moto3.

Nah......the 125's were never a million dollars, about 10 percent of that.
I was meaning that for 1.2 million i ain't paying anyone to change the oil the servicing should be free LOL
The cost of a service contract is believed to run in the low six figures, or pretty close to what it would have cost to lease a top-spec Aprilia RSA at the end of the two-stroke 125cc period. As happens all too often, imposing cost-cutting regulations has merely created even more expensive loopholes.http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/racing/motogp-private-tests-banned-moto3-engine-costs-curbed/

Getting the 125GP and 250GP costs mixed up I think.

Servicing should definitely be free at that price. As it is Honda get to dictate alsorts for those RCV1000's. For instance, if Nicky Hayden were to finish in front of all of the satellite bikes he might find his engine is a bit less responsive next time out and there's nothing him or his team could do about it except complain loudly.

buried in the article was something about how the engines for M3 were went to be sold to the dorna and then distributed randomly to stop that stuff happening in M3 but then again with Honda electronics they can probably use the "death switch" remotely anyway, Now that would bring a new twist to team orders.

The GPC have now found a set of rules which they believe will rein in the most blatant abuse of the service contract system. Instead of the manufacturers supplying engines to the teams directly under a service contract agreement (which often meant that the teams would have to hand the engines back at the end of the year), the manufacturers will have to supply the engines to Dorna, who will distribute them on a random basis to the teams using that engine. The arrangement will see teams end up with 6 engines which they own at the end of the year, for a price of 68,000 euros.

Yup they did. Just seems like a weird situation to be in where you buy and own something but don't have any say in things for 2 years. Leasing you can understand as the manufacturer gets the gear back at the end of the agreement, but the buyer owns those RCV1000's right from the start.

Kenny Roberts had a theory that a top rider no mater when he starts is only able to do about ten years at the top....there are exceptions but Rossi i don't think needs to stick his neck out. I guess Wayne Rainey didn't either nor did Doohan......
Rossi having been 125 250 500 and MotoGP champion has little to gain and all to lose...

Production Honda,s are bloody slow! I know Honda reported the CS was doing very simillar times in testing on them, but I have to wonder what spec the motor was in that bike based on yesterdays lap times by very compitent riders. I think a few riders and teams are going rather pissed with this, and the Privateer yamaha just smokes them

And the Suzuki, man lap times yesterday were crap, but that may be due to now using the same electronics as the top factory teams, and needing to re set the bike up to suit

fukin boo hoo for Honda

Quote from Motomatters

So it could turn out to be a long year at Honda. While their factory MotoGP team will continue to rip up the field, the RCV1000R looks like it really needs more horsepower. Honda's aim was to be the Aprilia ARTs, but without them here, there is no comparison material. When you compare the Honda to Yamaha's offering, the Honda looks positively tepid. Asked if he felt Yamaha had violated the spirit of the rules, HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto looked annoyed, and told the reporter asking the question to go ask Yamaha about it. Nakamoto's face made it clear he was not happy with the situation, a sentiment shared by the teams who signed up for the RCV1000R.

What's the spirit of the Open rules? For Honda it is to put some more bikes on the grid that won't threaten their factory team. For Yamaha it is to do the same, but have their bikes beat Honda. For Dorna it is to develop a class that will replace the Factory class with their stupid Honda-inspired fuel limits and ridiculously expensive electronics, thereby breaking Honda's stranglehold.

Methinks Honda will be beaten on this one. But Honda is pretty damn good at making sure the championship is run for their benefit.

It's testing, all sorts of combinations are tried. Some work, some don't. Espagaro has the English built frame (FTR?).

Rossi has reported chatter problems with the new Bridgestones, can't be too bad though, he's quick. He is hopeful that the problem will have been fixed before Bridgstone finally formulate the GP tyre. Good luck with that...

Rossi commented on Aleix's efforts. Basically he said AE hasn't won *that* much in his career, but he is definitely quick now.

My take is that AE is so quick that I wonder if he suddenly finds his bike doesn't go quite so well, and that the satellite Yamaha bikes are faster?
Or maybe it's just that I'm getting cynical in my old age.

My take is that AE is so quick that I wonder if he suddenly finds his bike doesn't go quite so well, and that the satellite Yamaha bikes are faster?
Or maybe it's just that I'm getting cynical in my old age.

That's so cynical it took me ages to work out

Don't get too excited, what you see today, aint what you are gonna get next month, lots of work for them all to do yet.

1-Lorenzo
2-MM
3-Ped
4-Bau

Too true, thats why I'm not going to try guessing a champ.
Is Bautista on a works Honda ? cos I see a couple of people favour him on this thread ?

He's on a factory satellite. So seamless boxed full power motor, but Showa suspension and Nissin brakes...which I bet sluts him off no fucken end.
