I know he had a full day test on a NSR500 at Philip Island as reward for winning the 8 hour maybe.
Mick Doohan turned up to see how he was going and gave him some tips etc.
Mick took Aarons Superbike out and did like 5 laps and lapped faster than Slight ever had, oooppps

He had a couple of sessions was on par with a couple of the other regular riders also Honda mounted who were vastly more experienced on the NSR500 (as in a couple of seasons)
I actually said it a couple of pages back.

Who would Mr Honda look at to replace Dani?

This guy ..... Maverick Vinales

He has a Very BIG future I think

You inferred A h1R was not a like a 500cc 2 stroke GP bike.

English as she is wrote proper... He may have implied that (or not). You may have inferred something from his statement (or not).

Incorrect use of the words infer and imply is a pet peeve of mine. Just sayin'.

Lets hope Mav stays on the Suzuki and they make it good enough to win the championship, I've grown fond of the new bike this year, seems like they have their heads screwed on with the development. Him and ESA are probably one of the stronger pairings in the paddock when it comes to untapped talent, given the bike they will be champions.

Agreed. No special gear box yet either! That alone gives them a heap of time once introduced. No Blow ups since testing ended as such, so they are getting there big time. Maverick is the over all better ( Long term for groth) of the 2 current riders imo

He sure is, though putting an open class bike on the front row multiple times as well as getting a podium once is nothing to be sneezed at. :2thumbsup

Haha, yup. They could have fixed the issue a few years back by offering Stoner $100 million to stay with them, he rode that Ducati well when he wasn't busy falling off in the warm up lap :shit:. I do remember our current NZSBK champion doing that once though when he was on a 125 and Hampton downs.

Still even with the soft tyre those open class bikes had fark all grunt (I'd still shit myself on one) compared to what he was up against. Part of it was a bit of tailgating too though from memory.

Didn't he put the Suzuki on the front without using the soft tyre option a few rounds back though? And Mav was just behind him too.
Go Suzuki!

I do NOT keep a little black book for key board hero posts sorry man, and since my new memory retention is fuked, I have no idea to be honest. They deff still need to slip stream, I think they were about 7 KPH down on Tech 3 yams in last race, which is not bad and getting better. Suzuki being the smallest of the 4 japa's, does not have the money the others have, so I think they are doing awsome. But I am Naturally Suzuki Biased. HAHA and Kawasaki are just cowards!

I wonder why they didn't go better - in the wet - last weekend.. mayhaps they shoulda put Westy on board..

Right, so let's presume 1-2's from Yamma, no injuries, no bike blowups, noone starting when the reds go on instead of out, noones visor fogging up....

VR's ahead by 12 now...

Misano - VR confidently (home country, and VR beat JL here last year)
Aragon - JL confidently (home country, and JL won last year, VR DNF)
Motegi - JL slim margin (won last year, VR +2.6)
Fiwip Island - VR confidently (won over JL by over 10 secs last year)
Truly Asia - VR slim margin (2nd last year, just ahead of JL in third)

Coming into Valencia, based on that guesswork, VR would be ahead by 17pts?

JL didn't finish there last year and rossi was second... Home country for JL though, but even if he won, Rossi could finish somewhere in the top few and be fine.

Added to which Rossi has been hitting podiums non stop for how many races now...

So why is JL $1.70 at the TAB and VR is $2.05 for the championship at the mo?

A couple of years ago it seemed absolutely unattainable. It's still a mammoth task though: 10 more wins required IIRC?

Rossi's task has been so much harder because the races don't have people riding two classes or more these days. Ago could rack up 350 and 500cc wins the same weekend, though slightly compensating that is there are more rounds per year now.

Exactually, as well as the compitition in AGO's days, was no where near as = or hard as it is in the modern world. Ago was a great rider, but Rossi is the GOAT, full stop.

My favourite ever is still Eddie Lawson.

V.R. cannot be GOAT..

Reason: Epic fail on Ducati..

KC - for all his prickly/brittle/waspishness was the only racer to really get much out of that recalcitrant dog..

So full credit to him - talent-wise - ( & to V.R. - for having the equanimity - to admit that too)..

I agree Lawson is incredibly underrated, his year on the NSR500 that was virtually unridable, but Lawson still won titles without taking unnecessary risks.
For pure talent though it has to have Swantz in the mix. I can still watch some stuff he did and be amazed at stuff he pulled off.(but greatly flawed with tactical riding)
Ago for all his success for most of his career rode under team orders that greatly favoured him.
Rossi and Hailwood and Doohan are my greatest of all time. Hailwood for pure talent, Doohan and Rossi had a lot more understanding of how to develop and set up a bike though.

Conversely if you asked Kenny Roberts after he mentioned himself he might say Rainey was.
If Jarno Saarinen hadn't been killed I do wonder what he would have achieved.
Same as Santiago Herrero

Me too, its a confidence thing.. even when commuting to work..

Teaches feel.. & how far you can push.. if your reaction times are quick enough, & you are not too ham-fisted..

I used to have other bike riders tell me that 2Ts "Must be hell in the wet".. but they aint..
- that lack of inertia, that 4Ts need a slipper clutch to deal with, works positively - in dicey traction situations..

It was odd to see M-M do that weird electro-wriggle-highside last weekend, kinda emulating - what stupidly snappish 500s - used to do in the dry..

I remember getting poll in SBK at Pukekohe by 1.9 seconds and poll in the 600 by 2.1 seconds one year in the pooring rain. The same year I was winning a lot in the dry also, and the talkwas, ya get faster in the wet when your carreer is nealy over bahahaha fuk tards. Funny - I recently went for a ride with a bloke who has a nice Ducati collection, & from time-to-time, he 'll give 'em a bit of stick..

We were on a section of newly re-smoothed & surfaced - lovely sweeping ( 140-160km/h) bends which were slick wet,
although the rain had gone.. I was behind him, & he was clearly leaving a nice swept tyre line, & thought, jeeze -he's a bit bolder than usual..

But I figured, if he can do it, so can I.. later when I told him this.. he was a bit shaken.. he'd thought it was dry, but just glistening dark,
due to being new real smooth tar seal.. sure hey, its a confidence thing - no dramas..

Lol. Looks a lot scarier with a clear visor!

I used to stick with a clear one a i like to see everything, - The trick was that you had to make doubly sure you looked well ahead of where you were going, and i used to tell myself at every entry to get off the brake earlier than you 'think' you can, this made the load onto both wheels more even through the turn giving really good pitch control and consistent grip.
Once you get your rolling mid corner speed up i found using a higher gear in some turns handy also.

When you watched Rossi closely through the quick transition left / right turns at Silverstone - He had a fantastically smooth transition. He also 'bailed out' of retaining a tight exit line if he muffed up his entry/apex which is a very good risk management decision in the wet. Better to survive for the next corner rather than turn the bike too hard too early.

Like shaun said - some days you wondered why everybody was going so slow in the wet, but they were no doubt all trying damm hard in their own way, its just easier to ride fast in the wet once you get your head around the dynamics. And when you have done that - you become smooth, and with smoothness comes speed.

I have seen a polar oposite to this method though, Kyonari ? - i think on the Hanspree Fireblade at Donnington in the wet in qualifying. He was loose AND fast.

Best display of wet weather dominance I've ever seen was Stoner at Silverstone. He simply blew everyone well and truly into the weeds. It was so wet and cold, I think everyone else had no heat into the tyres. He was so fast, I think his tyres maintained better grip levels.

I don't know whether it was on the Rainey/Schwantz video or in an interview but I remember him saying early on beating them wasn't enough to win he wanted to destroy them.
Hence worse than just crashing, he actually crashed a lot while in podium positions.
He said he used to look at the pitboards and it would say 1 or three seconds and he would still push on even harder. It wasn't until later he realised that 3 second was half the length of some straights.
Best I have ever seen under brakes he could do the near impossible.

Lanzi looked quite portly in his leathers compared to the rest but if you're that quick who cares.

As I've mentioned previously it's quite common in racing to see a new dude waaay up the field in a wet race - until they throw it up the road. Or dudette perhaps? Maria Herrera at Silverstone. Thereafter lesson learnt, normal service resumes.

Noted that the MotoGP riders were tending to avoid the paint at silverstone but that the Moto3 guys were more casual about that. They don't seem to know that you should avoid wet paint. It was Steve Martin who said something like, "In theory the paint has the same amount of grip as the track, but I don't trust that theory."
Sad that Martin is no longer in the commentary team he was the pick of the commentators we get here.

Classic Kevin Schwantz moment from personal memory..

Back in `89, when Phillip Is. initially hosted the World Championship G.P. circus,
a Suzuki-mad mate of mine came over from NZ - to watch his hero - he was certain K.S. was gonna 'clean up'..

We got a great view from the grandstand set up overlooking Lukey Heights..

& K.S. - on the 1st lap.. duly.. threw it away, right in front of us.. buzzkiller.. or what..

The race itself was brilliant, Schwantz or no.. ( Kevin Magee could ride 'em 'sukis pretty good too)..

& Wayner Gardner wrestled that bearish NSR to victory, in a real intense - win or crash trying - effort..

At quality tracks, the Paint is FINE pritch. The real issue with the paint strips is, often there are bumps as such, which do upset the bike to much in the wet to use them.

M Maladin was just to young when he had the Cagiva ride. Then he just stayed in the USA making himself a Zillionaire. Good on him though Eddie did rock on it though. Even Carl Fogerty did dam well on it, untill running out of fuel, stupid eye ties

Thanks for the effort with the pix Oscar.. good stuff, I'll have to see if I can find/dig out mine now..

The sports fans were out in big numbers for that one, more than show up these days,
& you'd recall that year, Alan Bond even had his fat Swan blimp buzzing about..( no Donna jokes, she wasn't that bad.. well, not in that way..)

Wayne Gardner rode like he was possessed ( no drug testing back then, Hmmm), & won a hard fought race.. good stuff..
He did it again the next year, even breaking the fairing brackets from wresting the NSR manfully back in line, from a vicious tank-slapper..

The G.P. then went to Eastern Creek in Synney for a few years, - for a laugh, I checked the quickest laps list there,
& the current Aussie Superbike record is 'bout equal to the ~20 year old 500 G.P. best lap..

Recently I received Mat Oxley's book "Stealing Speed" which recounts the story of East German Ernst Degner's defection to the West with his knowledge of the technology used by the MZ factory, and with some of their hardware.

Next season Degner appeared on a suddenly very competitive Suzuki. The Japanese two stroke had only ever previously been a dog.

I haven't read the book yet but am familiar with the broad outline of the story which ended well for Suzuki but less so for Degner. He retired to East Germany where he was subsequently found with his throat cut. Suicide apparently. :sherlock:

Anyhoo, while ruminating on such matters the thought occurs that there must be someone in the Suzuki factory that remembers the fastest way to get speed is to steal it from the opposition?

Ah, technically.. Suzuki paid for it.. Degner was stealing it.. from lousy thievin' Soviet Commies..

Good read though, & those Kaaden MZ's were impressive enough to get a playboy capitalist like Mike Hailwood aboard..

In fact, for peak specific output ( hp/cc) current Moto G.P. mills aint much better than those `60s 2T hotshots..

Sheesh Pritch the entire Jap bike industry is based around stealing each others ideas.

Walter Kaaden is the acknowledged godfather of modern Two Strokes by those in the know but is confined to practically a paupers grave in his hometown.

If by the last sentence in your post E-R, you mean Honda/Dorna - who got 2Ts banned from G.P. racing, yep.. for sure..

I think Kaaden was rightly proud of his achievements, & where they led, even if he personally - was cruelled by circumstances..

( & even if his sonic pulse/resonance ideas had been initially funded by uncle Adolf's Nazi war machine research facilities..)

I loved the way the bikes looked back then...

They sure look great, wish I was old enough to know/see the racing then. In the meantime I'll just stick to my Pre '89 racing these days, some great cult classic bikes from the era, if the race machinery was anyway near as good as the road bikes...

Nazis were kinda sticklers for doing things properly.. the SS would boot you out for being corrupt, a thief or even a full-on piss head..
& Hitler himself brought into law modern-style animal rights ( No boiling lobsters alive!) & No smoking in Gov't buildings regs.. oddly enough..

But Adolf was a keen motor head, & sent SS team BMW to win the I.o.M. Senior TT in `39 - along with a bunch of other pre-war G.P. stuff..

That's a fallacy about his death he had a heart attack but was not found till a while later he was running a rental car place he was prior to that a rep for an oil company at gps. Pretty sure he died at tenor Reef also
Kadden reckoned Honda had helped as well as they won the title when Degner pulled out of the last race and therefor won the title. Kaaden thought one engine went to the UK first to EMC then on to Rotax.

Ok, so I cheated and checked the end of Oxley's book.

Degner was a mess, he was a very vain guy with a badly scarred face, he was suffering depression, he was addicted to morphine, and his marriage had broken up. He had gone back to Tenerife for the summer and he died of an apparent heart attack there. His son implied that Degner's health was at such a low ebb that it wouldn't have taken much to kill him. There is also a history of the family having early heart attacks, both Degner's father and his son also had early heart attacks.

So the stuff I read on the 'Net was a load of bollocks.

Now I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

At least you spelled Tenerife right unlike me.
Ages ago I posted an interview with Kaaden before he died.
Have a look at the guys eyes he seemed to be an intense dude.
I'm picking along with most others, if he could have got his family out (as Degner did) he would have defected too though.
I will try and find the link.

This one also says he commited suicide but plenty of other material says heart attack.
The family at the time were pretty vocal about the rumours of the cause of death I remember reading that.
Hugh Anderson rode with him and even stopped his bike to help him when he was burnt if memory serves me right.
I haven't read the book but I do remember there was another one around a similar time and the two books were at odds over certain things.

MZ would have been more successful if they were allowed to use more western parts and materials.
Kaaden used to barter and smuggle bits were he could as he wanted to win.

Kaaden used to barter and smuggle bits were he could as he wanted to win.

It was a lot like NZ in the 1950's - currency restrictions prevented import of the bits Kaaden wanted, just like here.

That scenario is why i've said for years the the Classic register promotes a false history - nothing ever stayed original here once something broke.

From the press at the time I seem to recall that MZ were unable to pay Alan Shepherd one year so they gave him his bikes. When the bikes turned up at HM Customs he was told you can't bring those into the country, they're from East Germany. How that situation resolved itself I don't know. Politics in sport ain't new.

I had always assumed that the shortage of money was due to a shortage of hard currencies in the GDR, but while looking for the details of Degner's death I came across a passage where Oxley describes an official as misappropriating all of the wages intended for the riders. Additionally he purloined all the cash bonuses paid by the oil and tyre companies for podium finishes and transferred it all to an overseas bank account.

When the official told Kaaden he was going to defect Kaaden was extemely anxious because he had been interrogated for days after Degner's defection.

The thieving official was living in Berlin, he was never prosecuted.

From the little I've seen of "Stealing Speed" it's a good read. It was out of print and people were asking silly prices for second hand copies on Amazon. You could still get the Kindle edition for very little though. Anyhoo I now have an autographed copy, I don't think you can get those on Kindle.

Your "good article" may've been a good 'story'- but it does not bear out in reality..

A few posts back, I noted that a check on the Eastern Creek/Sydney Motorsport Park circuit lap records
shows that the current Aussie Superbike Racing ( 2015) quickest lap is ~same as the G.P. 500
equivalent from ~20 years ago.. so a showroom stock bike - wouldn't nearly be as close..

Back when Wayne Gardner was racing V8 Stupidcars - I asked him what lap times he reckoned he could
do around Pukekohe on an NSR 500, he said probably mid-to-high 50 sec range..

What was the best time around there - done on the BSL 500?

So was the 500 ridden on the same day as the prodi bike, or was it based on times set by the 500 in the past? As track conditions change big time, so comparing a time of say this year, against a time set years ago, is just like having a wank, kinda pointless, apart from making your self feel better about the spew coming out

Same day, same track and same rider doing a back to back comparison. Yeah just as comparing Dyno results from like the car boys like to do. Pointless unless you have the same car on the same dyno on the same day. Great to wank on about though!

I'm going to ignore Just.A.Windbag. as it appears 2stroke fumes have addled his brains and biased him towards them :nya:. That said rode a wee 2 stroke round Ruapuna on Sunday a found it hilarious fun to ride. It also appears that Phillip Island is the only track in the world that matters.

The point I was making is look at the bikes that we can pick up from the showroom today and how great they are. The fact that Joe Blogs can go buy a 1000cc weapon which is as quick on a given day around a race track as what the big guns rode back in the 90s is pretty awesome if you ask me. The fact that Joe Blogs has ham fists and could only ever get 30% out of that bike is another thing entirely!

edit: added extra '0' to the 100cc weapon. Though a lot of 1000 riders would get beaten by a clued up chap on a 100cc I'm sure!

Really looking for to Mr Lowes decision, whether to move up or stay in Moto2 another year. He reminds me a lot of the way Maveric challenged last year. He is also the only fuker to make that chassis work, hence everyone is watching him in the padock. It is good having them all on even HP bikes, as it does come down to chassis design and chassis/suspension set up only, not like in the 2 stroke days, where money ruled. When I managed a GP 250 team years back, we got very lucky and got to purchase a complete A Kit of another team who were running out of money, wait for it, barrels, pipes, Pistons rings reed det sensor, 12-000 pounds in 91 or 2 I think it was, and that was a cheap deal. Best display of wet weather dominance I've ever seen was Stoner at Silverstone. He simply blew everyone well and truly into the weeds. It was so wet and cold, I think everyone else had no heat into the tyres. He was so fast, I think his tyres maintained better grip levels.

I've been a member for 5 years and the Windbag has nearly as many posts as me... So either I don't post enough or he posts too much...

Too funny, since the possibilty of having a reasonable discussion - actually related to the thread topic - seems very difficult for you..

Most of your posts ( along with some others such as ol' 'swayback, rat-fink & cousin IT) are irrelevant garbage.. & worse, not even fairly entertaining..

Anyhow..

Ducati reckon they are gonna get up on the box this weekend too, so what will Yamaha Factory Racing have - to counter with?

Considering Honda have tested there and both Yam boys have 3 wins there they will have their work cut out for them. DP and MM should be pretty strong I would think.

Looking at the Stats DP has the most Pole positions of the current riders and finished well there last year after MM biffed it. That and the relatively twisty nature of the track I would would think that Ducati are smoking some of J.A.W.s special 2-stroke blend to think they will podium, that said if MM bins it again and JL has a brain fart weekend they may manage 3rd.

Fingers crossed yet again that we will get all 4 of them battling it out for the win. PLEASE OH PLEASE!

Put him on ignore if you're so bothered by his posts.

I think MM has every chance of controlling the race from out front, if Rossi doesn't get there first. JLo might contend for a bit, but I can't recall him being super dominant in a race there.

So the Yams go out on softs both ends to pressure MM into dropping it.....
Forget this shit about using mediums or hards to come on late, pressure the bastard early.

How many races at the 2nd half of last season did he crash out of? Quite a few from memory it was only his early season dominance which won him the championship. So you may be on to something there!

Lets not forget how Rossi reeled him in earlier this year then made him his bitch when his tyres dropped off. NEVER rule out the Doctor.

True, & George has to keep his head free from V.R.'s 'negative waves/mind games', & ride his own race..

Yet - aint it 'bout time Dani-boi stepped up? He's usually good for a win.. on his day.. at least one - a season - at worst, surely..

Easy beat Championship-wise, sure, but Dani-boi does having an annoying habit of having an on-day, or 3, & being a bit of a spoiler too..
Lets see if he can do that to V.R., on behalf of Honda.. & earn his keep - that way..

Sorry dude, disagree. This track has slow and fast turns, and the honda can only be set up for one or the other it seems as is currently, but the Yami's can do both now quite comfortablly. It will come down to VR and Qual, he cannot fuk around and be less than 2nd row, other wise he is going to use up to much tire catching up to JL

Now to find how to use the ignore list, never done it

Honda will mess up his chances for the 2015 title too, you'll see..

Personally I think it will be Honda in first (and maybe second place).
Of course the important placings will come down to how VR and Jl qualify.

Without an outright win, it's gonna take JL a long time to make up the 12 points in dribs and drabs.

I will para phrase it but a uni in Japan (kobe I think)has this theory (backed by pretty extensive stats) that most top sportman only has the mental concentration for about 10 years at the top.
A lot of sports physiologists go along with it. I liken it to battle fatigue
So even if they start at say 18 they burn out faster.
It fits a lot of racers. Yet Rossi is sure bending it. Some that have gone on longer have had years with no success at all before coming back strong at the end, Colin Edwards springs to mind here.
I first read of it in TDC.
Maybe the psychologists have found a way to get around it.

Yea " STATS" Kind of like Numbers that accountants invent to make things read the way they want the books to read eh haha. But I also said for years that, people retire young as they have been doing it for so god dam long, that there real true passion for it burns out, PROFFESSIONAL scene that is. Us home boys, just love doing it, so keep doing as a hobby really. Look at CS for example, years an years and world champion x times an a multi Millionaire. It takes the belly and heart to keep at the top level like VR.

Some of it is due to "Ground Hog Day" - if you stay in 'the zone' you stick with it.. if V.R. had a less supportive missus.. well..

& natural talent & drive come into it too, like Mike Hailwood.. nothing to prove, no money issues.. he just wanted to do it..

Same for the legendary Fangio in F1.. he was super-capable for decades..

Colin Edwards was, like Slighty, a classic 2nd string guy.. competent enough in WSBK, but not 'killer' enough - to claim the top step in G.P. racing..
