What is the 'long way down' by the way?

Longer. Twistier. Better.

im really hoping i can make it along to one of these really soon, have been on night shifts the last couple of weeks, and moving to 10am-10pm shifts next week so looks like it'll be a few more weeks till i can make it, but certainly will one of these days! Would be really cool to meet some other shore bikers, and learn a few tricks off more experienced people :)

Some people meet at Shell Westgate at the end of the North Western. They depart at 7pm. They take a route agreed just before hand over to the car park at the Albany Mega Centre, kinda near the Burger King. They arrive around 7:30pm.

Those that don't join the ride go directly to the car park at the Mega Centre at 7:30pm.

Once there something is practiced for around an hour. At 8:30pm people either head home or go to Bar Africa on William Pickering Drive (near the Bush Road intersection) in Albany.

Sharry
10th November 2009, 20:22
The meet happens rain or shine, different people on different nights sometimes. Just roll up when you are able.
The plan for the night may or may not be pre-organised by someone or decided on the night.

The talk in the Pub is correct......my last NASS will be the Wednesday before Christmas (16th?). I am moving early next year to my new home just this side of Kaitaia and the DRZ will struggle to get there and back in an evening. I have greatly enjoyed my time with the NASS groups and particularly the increased skills levels and riding maturity exhibited as you all try hard to master the weird and wonderful exercises that Richard, Dawn and the other tutors put in front of you. Never stop learning!

You can take great pride in the fact that you've helped to educate many newbies, given riders enthusiasm to keep learning/practising, and have reduced motorcycle accidents in our community.

Woodcocks is in a not the nicest condition.

repair patches mid corner with no signs or sweeping, so probably not a good idea for a ride like today's.

It's only gravel patches, most of its on straight bits.

I would however advise to be careful on that very steep uphill 35 corner, there was a fair bit of loose gravel there on Sunday.

Maybe we can split up into two groups, those that are newer can take an easier way??

Yeah, good point.... the beginning (is it called West coast road?) does have unmarked corners with gravel.

If you're expecting it, then its ok...but highly likely people coming on this ride won't be reading our posts...

I did it today. Just coming back from riding up to Wellsford and back. Loose gravel on straights as pointed out, enough to spin the rear out if your on the gas. Some loose gravel on corners too, not sure if marked or not, I just always hang off so it's never a problem. Just be aware and everyone including the learners 'should' be fine.

Greetings all,

Planned (?) for this week is the following:

A longer ride than normal up SH 16 to Wellsford and then back to Bar Africa for the wind up for the year;

A shorter ride (60 - 80km) taking in some of the winding back roads of west Auckland. This ride will be conducted at new riders pace and end up at Bar Africa for the same wind up for the year.

If you prefer, don't come on the rides and meet the riders at Bar Africa from around 8.30pm.

There will not be any training done at Albany.

So, assemble at Shell Westgate by 7pm and choose which ride you want to do. It will be very difficult to do both rides!

I will be up in Kerikeri with work (luckily on the bike tho) so will miss out on the last one for the year (unless you plan on doing one on the 23rd, unfortunately I will be up in Russell then as well), thanks for all the hard work Mark W, the hobbit and others who have helped make this event as great as it is. It good to know that perhaps you may have saved a few bikers from getting seriously hurt through all the practise and expertise.

Our group is generally very good (you can learn heaps for instance by following and observing the Green hornet).

<img src="http://kirbymuseum.org/blogs/simonandkirby/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/GreenHornet08.jpg">

Be wary of other groups though, if you don't ride your own ride they can push you to ride more stupider.

I normally ride near the back, but on the way down I thought "what the hell, I'm going near the front this time"... it's obvious some people don't really enjoy seeing a cruiser riding in front of them

The Road is actually called "Scenic Drive" according to my map.

If you can find the intersection of Te Henga Road and Scenic Drive either on a map, via Google or physically the Pukematekeo Summit track is approximately 1.5 km south of the intersection.

The entrance track is hard to spot when heading south as it is

a) on the right hand side of the road
b) runs at an oblique and acute angle up the hill and you will be almost past it before you see it.

It is just after the crest of the hill that you have climbed since leaving the Te Henga Road intersection.

The road is signposted but again the sign is best spotted headed north and not south.

Hope this helps.

Who's keen for a Xmas eve ride to puhoi pub for some grub? Meet at northcote rd mobil at 6, leaving at 6:15pm, Xmas eve. Come along for a cruisey ride followed by a good feed :)

Funny, unless I have to I do not ride on days of significance.

I know the grim reaper might just be riding faster than me on any given day but I would prefer to not have it happen on a special day.

It's only 4 days a year.

Christmas, Boxing day, New Year and Easter. I almost always ride somewhere on my birthday.

But the listed days normally occasion more than your usual drink driving suspects and I don't wish to be a statistic that brings my family down on these days that are mostly about family... and eating too much.

And what about all the days you get laid?

Dunno about you but if I tried to not ride the days I got laid when would go riding?

If your only getting it on public holidays you need to change your style.

If your trying to imply you should get a public holiday every time you get laid you need to loosen your grip.

You can't just say that without giving the story ...

taught that emergency braking was self explanatory, but if you wanna more details...

on the 4th day of my christmas tour (Yesterday) , cruising, coming over a blind 65km corner, doing a medium pace (if that means anything at all), happen to see a que of vehicles. Stopped. On the brakes and thats it. Stopped all good, no issues.

Turned out the car que was due to a road closure following a head on collision between two cars. No fatalities.

Went to try and find this, unfortunately I didn't notice the point "head north not south"....doh, well next time I should be able to find it.
However I did find a "lesser" lookout on Scenic Drive, and had an awesome ride down to Piha and back. :2thumbsup

The theory is to meet at Papakura Service Centre, go for a ride, then exercises at Manukau in one of their carparks opposite the courthouse, followed by social time at The Bog.
Trying to keep the same "recipe" as NASS as it works very well.

Oh no,I didn't drop or crash it,if that's what doing a fizbin is..

I ran out of gas soon after entering the motorway, pulled over, switched to reserve, but I had accidentally hit the killswitch,so wouldn't start.

Arrived back in driveway and my friend asked: did you put the fuel switch in an "off" position just now ? I was like :brick:

Good exercise pushing a bike tho ...:)
