Great ride guys, won't be there next week but will definately come the week after ;)

still can't believe I managed to burn off the firestorm lol

I must say that was very well done. Very much proves the case of it's not what you ride it is how you ride it. I was burned off twice that night, and that's because two people with much more experience on their bikes rode them very well. Perhaps I could have taken off faster, but then I could have also ended up sliding down the road on my butt or flipping the thing over. Not tempted to try on a bike I've only done 150km on. So if you're ever feeling like you _have_ to get a bigger bike, just remember a 250 can beat a 1000 if you ride it right.

hi there i'm a newbie - going for my bhs on sat. Is it possible to come along one week to see what you guys do - see what bikes you ride? I'm still not sure what to get - was going to get a dual purpose as my partner (now ex) does adventure riding - maybe an xt250 or dr250. Now that its just me i wondered about a gn250 to get confident on. Would be good to see what others are riding...

To participate you need a bike, but no one will mind if you want to watch. You might be best coming along to Bar Africa with us at the end of the session. More chatting done there.

I will probably make it out to see you all at NASS this Wed. I have just put a deposit on a bike but won't be riding - still have to do written test. I got an xt225. She will suit me well to build up confidence on. I decided to get one from the Red Baron - not easy to find something at a shop on my very limited budget! But this way the bike is serviced, road legal, comes with a warranty - all good for me who has no idea what I'm doing and buying blind from Trade Me was a bit scary. :D

Don't forget to bring along a tyre pressure gauge if you have one for next week. We'll spend 5 or 10 minutes at the car park and make sure everyone's tyres are correctly inflated, and that they now how to check their tyres.

If you don't have a tyre pressure gauge you can get cheap ones at Repco or Supercheap Auto, and I wouldn't be surprised if Cycletreads also sell them.

Also if you don't know what pressure you are meant to have in your tyres try and find it out before next Wednesday. Many bikes have a sticker on the rear chain guard or near the back of the bike with the recommend tyre pressures on it. If you can't find this you'll need to Google for the tyre pressure to use on your bike.

Keeping your tyres at the correct tyre pressure is probably the single biggest (and cheapest) thing you can do to save tyre wear and keep your tyres handling at their best.

Just a reminder for as many people to bring along a portable tyre pressure gauge (and a couple of small torches wouldn't hurt!). We want everyone to both know how to check their tyres, and to actually do it.

Because of the leisurely pace at NASS most of us will be lucky to get our tyres "warm". So having your tyres 10psi under pressure or worse can have a huge impact on the handling of a bike.

If you don't know already - find out what pressure you front and rear tyre should have in them before coming along. Otherwise there might be a lot of guessing going on.

These are a particular boost to those on smaller bikes with lighter cheaper horns and not enough skills horse power to necessarily get out of the way.

If enough people indicate an interest I'll bring the 'busa this week so people can sample the nautilus.
Does anyone have a magnum to bring for same reason?

Thanks to my electrical problem last week we didn't manage to do this. Could as many people bring along a portable tyre pressure gauge again please, and we'll try and do a tyre check at Albany this week. It will only take 10 mins.

Nope. When a bike is running they get their power from the alternator - and you only use them when the bike is running.

If you find you are up for pricey parts try www.mrcycles.com.
My Genuine Susuki Stator for DR was less than half price a genuine in country replacement.
That's right, including shipping, exchange and GST. it was still cheaper than half what an example purchased in nz was.

There was a bit of pfaffing about because Suzuki America had never heard of a kick starting road model of the enduro version before.
11,000 SE models.
About a third are SE X models.
But no one in the US bought an x model.
But they looked after me right and freighted me a replacement at no further charge.

Super happy with these guys.
Had the right part come the first time I would have had the part in about half the time Suzuki NZ could get it.

Your Honda is pretty standard though so no real issue there.

They sell parts for the big 4.
Honda
Suzuki
Yamaha
Kawasaki.

Good schematics on their website, although they only have diagrams for bikes sold in the US.

Three words.
Cheap, great service.

Thanks for the tip. I have looked at them many times. I've also bought parts from a local Hamilton company:
http://www.econohonda.co.nz/
They buy up a lot of surplus products from delaers overseas who want to quit stock, and they also have a lot of second hand stock. So there pricing is pretty good. Each time I have used them I have had the parts the next day.

Here is a question for you to find out the answer to for tonight. At 100km/h, how long does it take for PERMANENT hearing damage to occurr?
ps. The answer is less than the duration from Shell Westgate to the Albany car park.

Ear plugs are cheap (like $2). You can buy them from NZ Safety stores (like in Glenfield) or CycleTreads.

Ever noticed why a lot of older riders (hello Richard) having problems hearing? Protecting your ears is probably easier than protecting any other part of your body. And surprisingly, most younger riders don't bother - and a lot of older riders wish they could get there hearing back.

Tonight I hope to show you guys how to properly wear ear plugs so you can still hear ok when your old and grey.

And it would be good if we could bring along some tyre pressure gauages (sorry to bring it up again, but we never got around to it last time as I had bike electrical problems that prevented me from attending). You'd be surprised how many people have underinflated tyres, and just don't know about it. It's so simple to check!

My deafness was started industraly but wind noise over the years has added to it . Once deafness starts it is a slippery slope there is no going back. The foam plugs hurt my ears after 10 min. I use Plugs for Lugs molded ear plugs. Yes they are $70odd(when I got Mine) but they are for ever and yes you have to look after them. If after riding you get ringing or tweeting in your ears YOU HAVE DONE DAMAGE. Learn Grasshoppers of this old joker. Regards Richard

The answer to the question about how long it takes before permanent hearing damage starts at 100km/h is 15 minutes.

What's the noise suppresion in dB of the whisper kit? You really want it to be 15dB or better to avoid hearing loss.
If they are that good I might get one!

I completed a defensive riding course to get 6 months off my restricted licence term. For me, I don't think the theory section taught me anything that would contribute to me being a safer rider. If you are a person who has any degree of common sense when it comes to issues such as peer pressure, riding while drunk or fatigued etc, you will probably not learn anything new from the theory part of the course. The practical session was very much just practice session for the full licence test, you might pick up a few tips on how the test is run, which can help; however, if you do have any concerns about the full licence test you'll probably get just as much help by asking around at NASS.

I would highly recommend attending trackdays. Being able to ride your bike a lot closer to its maximum performance will greatly increase confidence when it comes to riding it at normal road speeds. When you start pulling the brakes on hard from high speed, tipping the bike agressively into corners and riding out of the corner hard on the throttle at the track, you'll find that on the road you'll be a lot more confident doing these things at a more moderate speed. Once you know how hard you and your bike can brake and corner you'll feel safer on the road because you know you have a lot more in reserve.

One of the most common self-caused accidents motorcyclists have is overrunning corners. While it could be argued that what happens in such an accident is that the motorcyclist has overestimated their abilities and taken a corner too hot, another possible explanation is the rider has underestimated the ablilties of the bike.

A scenario I imagine involves a rider approacing a corner too fast. Because they have never had the experience of hard braking from speed, they do not use all the braking that is available to them, therefore not slowing the bike to a comfortable speed for the corner. The same goes for cornering, once they get to the corner they may simply not turn hard enough as they are unaware of how far they can actually lean the bike safely. With too much speed and not enough lean, the bike then may cross the centre line, potentially exposing them to oncoming traffic, or the bike and rider may leave the road alltogether.

So, a trackday may not teach you how to avoid getting into a sticky situation on the road, it will give you the confidence to use your bike to the best of your abilities to avoid an accident if you do get into one.

Nothing to disagree with there (i must be getting old)

When i first started riding, when i felt i was going to quick for a corner i would throttle off. no one had told me any different so when i went and did CSS, WOW what an eye opener. actuly being told how to ride a bike properly.
there are a lot of questions people don't ask becuse they think they are riding correctly.
Track days and CSS have made me so much better and now i aculty know what i am surpposed to be doing.

Finally have the ohlins on the RVF now so have a bike in ridable condition!

Might be a good bet to invest in a bike battery charger, otherwise if you leave it connected via the leads to your car battery for a few moments it should draw enough current to allow you to start your bike. Otherwise bump start it on the nearest hill :shifty:

we learnt bump starting a wee while ago wouldve been great for you. Go to nearest hill put it into .....probably 2nd gear, get a good push let clutch out and a little throttle. should be all good. (similar concept to roll starting a car) Alternatively if you belong to AA they will come jump you :-)
Would be great to see you looks like it will be a good night too

Basically put it in parallel with your car battery.
Connect eth +'es together and the -'ves together. Yes there is other stuff you can do (like grounding etc), but thats the most simple technique to remember.

Turn the key on. Turn off anything that drains the battery that you can (like lights). Put the bike in second. A bit of choke. Hold the clutch in. Ask someone to give you a push, and when your moving let the clutch out. As soon as the bike has started pull the clutch in so that it doesn't take off. Give it some revs to warm the engine up and charge the battery. Close the choke after 60s.

See you tonight.

I really enjoyed last night too. This was only the third time I have been on my bike and I am still learning gears, clutch, throttle, steering etc etc...... I really needed to be made to practice stopping and starting and found everyones help and advice fantastic. I am a bit nervous practicing in front of everyone as I am so bad but everyone is really supportive. I just wanted to say a big thanks to NASS.

ooooohhhh yes when I was riding the bunch of CXs two had single disc on the front and drum on the back. The other one (a Euro) has twin disc and sligle disc on the back. Forget which bike you are on and grab a hand-full of brakes it gets interesting. You get a wake up when the handle bars dive into the road :shit::shit::shit::shit::shit:and you have to feather the front but the back just locks up. The first time the back lock up I wondered what the funny niose was...... oh hang on the tacko is on zero ah ha:innocent: this is a clue. Remember to squeeze the brakes gentle to start to load the front when weight transferance happens. Just grabing will only lock up the front.....:gob:not a pleasent thing. regards Richard

Try putting a bubble of spit over the valve Beth. If the valve is leaking you'll see the bubbles forming in the spit. If the valve is not leaking the spit will just sit there.

I check my tyres often if I have 2 psi less the bike feels like shit and every bike I've ever owned does! Most bikes I have owned also have lost a psi or two over a week parked up so check it every ride when you gas up! Tyre pressures are the most important handling adjustment you can make ask any racer. Stick with your routine and start bagging the others for not noticing their wrong tyre pressures. "what can't you feel it!" LOL!!!

You have a couple of pretty serious bikes there I can see.

I would be very surprised if you can notice just 2 psi difference - your tyres will increase by more than this between cold and a normal road ride. If 2 psi really affected the handling that badly you'd bike would feel like shit everytime the tyres got hot.

I hear what your saying and i can't explain why I'm like this! I get on the SV it feels aweful go to the gas station lift the pressures from 36-38 warm ( the normal drop when it sits for a day or so) and its all good. Anything lower and the bike feels like it wants to fall into the corner and feels sluggish like I have a flatty. Was the same with the VTR and even on the old Z1. Took my mates 996 for a blat on the 05 coldkiwi, it felt aweful had to stop in Turangi and pump them up then it was great. I must say one of my better swap rides awesome bike! Same with my mates 08 VFR800 anniversary and there is no more rock solid bike than a VFR! I dunno why? I actually get pissed of with the hassle of having to do it!
Only thing I can think of is I've spent a lot of years karting where 5mm in the axle width or 2 psi in the tyres (hot or cold) makes a difference?? I'm to old and senile to remember if I was like this on my 84 GPZ1100 and other bikes before I started karting? I do like to push a bike along a bit, like to feel and hear it every time i ride even if its slow, absolutely hate Ipods, ear plugs and lots of luggage etc when you ride, you ride. Just me my cross to bear I suppose??

Hi Phil, I haven't got a clue. Sorry to sound like a girl, but how do you tell?

Nails are pretty common in motorcycle tyres as well Beth. Have you tried rolling around your tyre slowly and closely inspecting it for something foreign stuck in the tyre?

If its a nail you can usually just see a small shiny spot maybe 3mm to 5mm. Imagine taking a nail and cutting the head off. It looks like that - you only just see the end.

Sometimes you can get a rusty nail, and they are a bit harder to spot.

Hello Beth,

If you don't want to look uncool amongst people who think ape hangers are 0 degrees kelvin you could try some pressure sensing valve caps.

http://tirepressurealert.com/

http://www.pressurezone.co.nz/

Something to keep in mind when deciding if these are right for you is if you play radar blackjack these may not be a sensible choice. But if the vast majority of your riding is legal then these may be a good call.

Not necessarily.
These days you can by kits to turn a spoked rim into a tubeless rim.
They are basically some epoxy and a gasket. They are popular in motard circuits and basically any where where performance is more important than structural integrity but they want the old school look.

Lots of modern choppers, and I hear but cannot confirm some models of "sporty" wear them so that modern rubber can be worn on old school rims.

If in doubt most tyre repair places will tell you free of charge.
