would that be 6.30 at albany or westgate?
Albany.
So just to make it crystal clear for people browsing the thread:
Westgate (Shell) group meets at 6.30pm for a 7pm departure for Albany (~30-45min minute ride followed by carpark drills.
Tonight there will also be a separate group meeting directly at Albany carpark at 6.30pm to focus on lower speed bike handling skills (sounds easy enough - it isn't).
Both groups merge at Albany carpark around 7.30pm. And both groups go to the pub later on.
The choice is yours :sunny:

I'm actually going to be there tonight :)
Will go on the ride first though I think...still deciding though.
Maybe an idea would be to have the ride leave at 6.30 instead of 7 so we can get as much daylight as possible for the ride...just a thought now winter is on the way.
anywho...Catch you tonight :)

Depending on the group size, I was thinking we might take a small group and do hill starts for 15 mins or so.
We did some emergency braking last week. I was thinking we could advance this, and do brake and escape this week. So if you could set up one section of the course for this that would be great.
And the rest of the group could do a general handling course. Need to make sure we don't spread ourselves too thinly though.

Sure, we can do that. I was going to do a stop-go type exercise anyway which involves stopping at a mark without putting feet down, then taking off with a sharpish turn.
I have to admit I'm a bit wary of combining e-braking and turning in this situation. It's quite difficult to do safely.

Glad to know that it has been resolved & there is not going to be any pistols at dawn.

I'll be trying to grow this section as I get time and there is interest. If there is something you particulary want to see written up yell at me, I know I spout a lot of stuff and what is there comes from people asking me to write it up for them.

The last section on lines is well worth reading multiple times. I was all over the road until this was explained to me in plain english. Now I seem to have so much more time between corners because I'm already effectively lined up.

Yep every week, providing it's not chucking it down with rain (but yet some of us still turn up  )
It's every Wednesday, 6.30 meet (depart 7pm) from Shell Westgate or 7.30 meet at Noel Leemming Car Park (Albany)
Yep Free of Charge :) It's a good ride for Newbies or people just getting back into biking. All legal road limits :innocent: and good skills done at the car park :)

It was fantastic to see a good few from NASS out (in the rain) for sunday at Puke. They played all day and the grins got bigger whenever they were out on the track and smaller if the rain slowed down their day.
Its so much fun watching you guys progress and get more confident as the day progresses.
I was really impressed with the you all, from first timers like Tania (VTR) and Gail to those getting to grips with bigger bikes like Tania (GSXF). Ash, expect to see that ZX6 out next time
Graham commented to me, "did you leave any of the NASS guys behind" as I think you made up nearly half of the Group one riders. Fantastic!!!
I hope you all woke up this morning feeling very pleased with yourself, you should.

Thanks for posting that up again.
So there is a distinct difference between lane splitting and filtering as far as defined rules go?
I need to be a bit careful, because different people mean different things with those two terms. let me refer you to the Wiki for what I think the two mean:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/wiki/Filtering
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/wiki/Lane_Splitting
So based on that understanding, yes, different laws apply. The Wiki documents the laws for both cases.

You are saying that a car did a full-on burnout for 30-40 metres on a public road in sight of a cop and he did nothing about it? The air must have been filled with tyre smoke causing a visibility hazard.

Just done a ride by this morning on the way to work. there is one large piece of roofing material right in the middle of the car park we use. this is roped off and looks like it will be removed by days end. the rest of the car park looks fine.
The upper car park we sometimes use is totally covered in crap and is closed to the public.
the Northwestern Westfield car park is untouched. Maybe we could use that one tonight.

Maybe so but we are actually allowed to use the Albany car park. You'll find the security guards at other places have different ideas about 20 bikers spontaneously coning off their turf...
On that note, I am once again otherwise preoccupied this evening. :shifty:

As mentioned a few posts back, the route from Shell to the pub will be decided by those who actually turn up. We may very well be running two different routes, a shorter route for new riders, and a longer route (usually an hour long ish) for the more experienced riders. I'm keen to go for a longer ride tonight, hopefully others are too

I had the most dramatic NASS session last week. I was thinking it might be a wet session, so I bought some brake fluid, clear line, a ring spanner and and a bottle so I could demonstrate how to flush out brake fluid. I thought that would be a good wet weather session thing to do.
I packed all of this gear into my jacket. The jacket was a bit tight after this, so I could only half breath in. And wouldn't you know it, just as I zipped my jacket all the way up to the top the zipper handle snapped off. I tried to slide the zipper back down with my fingers, but it wouldn't move.
You know that moment when you suddenly realised your trapped, and you almost take a gasp, well I did that. Except I couldn't do the gasp. Anyway, told myself to calm down. I found some wire used for washing lines, some edge cutters, and made a new zipper handle, and with some relief, was able to undo and do up my jacket again. I also enjoyed taking a full breath,
I arrived at the service station as normal. Decided I needed some petrol. Looked briefly across at the petrol pumps, then back at the cap, unlocked the cap while at the same time grabbing the pump and started filling up.
Have you ever noticed that while the petrol is flowing into your tank it doesn't look the same as when it is just sitting their still? How the colour seems different? I noticed this and thought it was curious how the colour changes while it is flowing.
I then put the petrol pump back, and it went into the diesel slot on the pump. Fuck. I just realised that I had filled up my petrol tank with diesel.
Anyway, I wheeled my bike off the forecourt, and went inside. Explained what I had done, and asked if they had a syphon hose, pump, or anything I could use to get the fuel back out. Alas no. They did manage to find my a spare container I could transfer the fuel into.
Fortunately, I just remembered I had some clear line I had bought along to demonstrate changing brake fluid. So I got that out, and started slowing getting the bad fuel out. This got me about half way down the tank, and then the line was no longer long enough.
I checked my bike, and remembered that I had a foot pump under the seat. So I whipped the hose off that, added it to the clear line, and that got a lot more of the fuel out.
Fortunately for me, Attis came along, and went to the warehouse close buy and bought me a short run of garden hose. This quickly got the rest of the fuel out of the tank.
Then it was back to the pump to buy some actual petrol this time. And then we finally departed.
After our ride, a brief stop at the car park to make sure no one was waiting, we headed off to the pub. But that is another story ...
So what did you guys do last Wednesday?

18th May 2011, 13:50
As I paranoidly double check which pump I have picked up, I have asked myself I wonder if anybody has filled up with the wrong fuel and what do you do when you have. Thanks but commiserations on answering that question.

Wonder if they would have had a siphon if the question had been phrased more like "the pump didn't switch off and I can't afford to pay for the petrol"

Yup was my first time last night - it's a really good group. Thanks to everyone that said hullo and especially to the guys who organise everything.
Always good to wander out on group rides, you get to look at what lines other people take through corners and think about what you can take from watching how they corner. Slow speed maneuvering was something I have never really done on the bike before... and I am now far more active with my back brake. Though even a pom will admit I was a bit chilly when I got in at 9.40 - didn't help that I left the pub and went the wrong way
Let the guys know what you need work on and they will work it in, with well given advice that will improve your skills

This is what happens when you dont wear the right trousers. Friend hit a slick patch yesterday and came off at 50km p/h. Have to say I thought there would be broken bones after I saw her slide and tumble quite a few times to land up in the ditch. 3 hours in theatre today to clear out knee, 5 cm long hole down the knee and tendons ripped off her thumb which is now in a cast. I should get a photo of her helmet, the visor sheared off and the paint scraped off to its shell. Maybe it should be compulsory to watch somebody get their gravel rash cleaned, saline solution wash, brush to scrub knee and then twizzers to get the real stubborn bits. It is amazing to see how much gravel comes out. To quote my friend it is the only time she will be mistaken for a pakeha (she is Maori but was very white when the wound was being cleaned.

Since it's winter now I reckon there needs to be stuff like this at NASS. We should do some proper Gymkhana runs. It would be amazing fun and extremely useful for improving bike control and improving understanding of the tyres. If anyone is keen to get something going, give me a message and let's do it. I've been doing some stuff like this in the car park in the wet recently, turning harder and harder, letting the tyres slip a bit and getting comfortable with it. Has already done wonders for my confidence in rain. You can actually lean it really hard before it starts losing grip I am surprised.
I would be willing to invest in some cones and timing equipment, I think this could be epic if everyone got into it like in Japan.

hey guys,
i actually have been talking to John :first: (KoroJ here from KB, big :niceone:) regarding this sort of stuff.
he got some circuits of "Gymkhana"/"Police rodeo" and made some test runs. in his last email he shared 3 circuits that he actually build and tweaked after some trials with all the dimensions and requirements.
it seems that we could make something like the shield circuit with some tennis balls 1/2's, ice cream container for cones, etc.

Westy , 35Kph around a wet traffic island.:(:( All traffic islands are off-camber corners, this is for drainage (cheeper to have all the drains on the out side) I have been riding more years than i care to think about and they shit me off. Top marks for the crash bungs , minimal damage to you and your steed. Off camber corners are the bane of all bikers, and in the wet they are arse=holes. As Toto said "a learning experance" All the time we (mentors) keep telling you to keep your head up to maintain your horizion, makes spotting that really slick patch hard. I don't know if the camera is set at where you were looking but it seems to me that you didn't scan the corner very far in front of the bike. Turn your head more in corners, this gives you a better idea what is comming. 35kph was a bit quick for the conditions I don't think you will be making that error again. There are bold riders and there are old riders BUT there are very few old & bold riders. Ride safe Regards Richard

It really didn't look very fast when the bike went out from under you - I'd have to guess a little oil or diesel + water = treacherously slippery road. Did I hear the revs start to pick up just before the loss of traction? It is scary how little torque it takes to break traction after a wee shower brings the oil to the surface on urban roads.

Hey dude g,ad to see both you and bike came out relatively unscathed.
What caused it, you probably know better than us but you didn't seem to be going so quickly, although you said knee down so maybe a little too much lean on? For the conditions and if it had just started raining, that is the time to reassess and feel what you got for traction, keep th bike a little more up right in particular.
As Mark points out new rain floats the oil and roundabouts are great spots like any slowest piece of road for catching it.
Dirt riders talk about riding the frontor back, in the rain you should always try to ride the front. Catch me next time your out and I'll explain that if it doesn't make sense.

Hey mate,
Cheers for that, no i dont think i did, im still very new to taking corners at such a lean and off my seat. i dont know what happened, if you watch the video i dont lose traction or gain/lose any RPM's. it just tips over, possibly due to a slick patch in the road or me losing balance, one of the two.
Gotta love those Crash bungs! and the contour ;)

Bad luck about the low side. Great news that there was almost no damage.
Do you have a video without the audio soundtrack? I was trying to listen to what you where doing with the throttle and what sound the tyres were making, but it is too hard to make out.
Just the normal tips:
Don't use the front brake (rear brake if you have mucked up the entry and have to do something)
Keep constant throttle on (and especially don't close the throttle)
Be in a low gear so you can still have gentle pwer on the wheels.
Keep looking where you want to go.
Moving weight between the tyres (by braking, changing throttle), which changes the tyre grip is a common cause of loosing traction.
Pretty much everyone has a moment like that, so don't worry about it too much.

I do have just the video, i can chuck it up on youtube?
* I always use my rear brake when cornering, never my front
* My throttle was pretty constant, no bunny hops or any sudden changes :(
* i was in second i think, could have done in third
* i have a bad habit of only looking a few Meters ahead of me
There wasn't any tyre noise or anything, just... fell over. think i hit a oil patch, its like someone just kicked my bike to the left.
im going over the video constantly to find where i went wrong, I think it was a combination of many things

The other thing to think about if your tyres. As far as I remember you have super sport tyres on. They are great if you are riding in the DRY and properly heated up. On the other hand if they weren't up to temp, did not have sufficient grooves, and the tyre pressure was not up to the recommended spec, then it is very likely that this has had a lot to do with your off. If you had had a sport touring tyre on with plenty of grooves for the water and rubber compound designed to work in its optimum in lower temperature (i.e. sport touring/ city riding) the story might have been different.
If you want to learn more, I recommend you do a bit of reading on the net regarding, tyres, rubber compounds, inflation and what tyre suits what kind of riding. Your life can depend on it.

You can buy a cheaper one from Cycletreads - and they are in the same country ...
Also note they come in different sizes. You want one that covers your tail bone.

I didn't mean to give the impression that there was anything wrong with them. If they have a standard beginning with EN then they are probably fine. Note my comment about them being long enough to cover your tail bone (you want to prevent your tail bone being worn off in a slide). Neither of them seem to give the length.
I seemed to recall Cycletreads having back protectors from $130, but my memory could well be wrong. Toto?

Yup both meet the highest standards (level 2), not too sure about the tailbone however. I spoke to toto a couple of weeks ago and the cheapest i could find was 300 :(
I'd take a $130 back protector any day ;)
