I presume you are yet another person form "the Force"? Years back other bikies were allowed to use Whenuapai stretches of pavement when they were not otherwise utilised, it was an awesome venue to practice <del>wheelies</del> low speed skills. Is there a chance of this happening again?

Hey are you guys coming back????
I need to work on my open road cornering. I'm taking the left in too soon and then exiting too wide as cannot keep it tight around the inside of the corner. And taking my rights too close as well, mainly because I'm scared of the gravel that is often on the outside of the corners. Its those pesky 35's and some 45's I hate.

Can we do a session on........ Whatever it is that's making my bike turn to the right all by itself.
Please? It's confusing me.
All I did was bleed the brakes. (Yes! Me! I actually did it myself!!) and now the handle bars shudder a little, they did that day but haven't since. And the concerning thing is when I let go she used to go in a straight line untill she slowed down to stop. And now she veers off to the right really strongly. :(
Big Dog
7th April 2014, 08:15
That sounds like your calliper on the right is binding. Binding = not returning when the brake is released.
Why did you bleed the brakes?
How much pad do you have left?
Sounds probable dirt and or brake fluid has made it into the pistons of your calliper. I would go to super cheap / repco and buy some brake cleaner.
You will need:
A copper or wire brush
Nylon brush
Appropriate spammers
Rubber gloves.
And a suitable g clamp to do the next bit.
Take the calliper off the holder but not the hose.
Pull your brake lever the minimum number of times to push the pistons out until the boots (rubber accordion covers) are fully extended. Take care not to pop the pistons right out.
Spray liberally with brake cleaner. Before it dries scrub the boot with a nylon brush. Spray again and clean any corrosion or dirt off the metal parts with your copper or very gently with your wire brush. You will need to push the boots back see the whole piston. If the boots are damaged you will need to replace them. Sooner the better.
Clean the brake reservoir.
Take the cap off the brake reservoir and place it loosely.
Rag under it to catch any spills.
Use the clamp and a block of wood to return the piston.
Re attach.
If you have a calliper in the left repeat.
Put the cap back on reservoir.
Clean the reservoir callipers and surrounding areas thoroghly. Brake fluid loves to eat paint and corrode metal.
Tie your brake lever back as far as you can over night. I use an old piece of inner tube so if the brake compresses in it is still under tension.
Test your brakes. From stationary first, then low speed etc.
You may need to bleed them again.
If any of the above is scary call a mechanic. But you cannot ride like this without damaging your brake rotor. These are expensive to repair or replace.

Oops forgot, you will want to clean the guides that the brake pads slides back and forth on and apply a thin coat of copper grease.
Can't stress enough when you are done cleaning the crap off any parts rinse off with more brake cleaner. Just not the guides. There you will rinse off before you apply the grease.

Just a thought, when you bled the brakes...
Do you have twin disks? If so did you bleed the side furthest from you brake line first? If not you may have an uneven pressure.
I have done that before on a GPX250

If I recall you need to do the furthest one first. Made that mistake once and the brake in the right would not go off at all, panicked and took it to a mechanic. Who laughed showed me what order to do it in and sentence on my way.
Since then always done the further one first. Never had a problem since.
I am not sure of the how. Something about the divider block is also responsible for keeping pressure even.

I've noticed the line taken through corners on the open road can be focused on a little for a few of us.
Admittedly it's harder in the dark, and staying in the middle of your lane throughout the corner may appear safest. I'd suggest you could still at least utilise the width of the car tyre tracks.
I'd recommend working on this skill, even on the corners that aren't taken quickly, in order to cement the good habit.
Personally I spent several years intentionally taking a bad corner line, in order to make it more "interesting", and now I'm finding it hard to consistently take a good line.
Attached is a picture of 3 different cornering lines. The one to practice for road riding is the green one. Stay wide on the corner (not off the shoulder or into the gravel! - perhaps the outside wheeltrack), until you see the corner opening up (the vanishing point starts moving away), then drop into your turn so you end up in the inside wheeltrack.

Already visited Kolorinn Kustoms this morning. To plastic weld these few cracks, they refuse to do a half-arse job of only welding one side, which is good but means they need to repaint the entire panel. The paint is very unique so is expensive to match. One panel estimated at $520. Clean up and re-spray entire bike estimated (without seeing it) between $1800 and $2500.
They suggested one option is a layer of fibreglass in the inside of the panel. The cracks will still be visible, but that doesn't really matter as they are low on the fairing. This will make it quite strong, and apparently will not pose an issue if in future I choose to re-spray all the fairings.
I've done some fibreglass repairs on surfboards in my youth. What could possibly go wrong, lol.
Yesterday I went to another plastic welder. They told me they simply couldn't match the paint, too complex.

For those coming on the ride tonight; it's likely to be starting to get cold enough that you may experiencing your visor misty up during the ride.
If you can, before the ride, give you visor a polish (using a soft cloth, not paper) using a polish like Pledge, Carnauba wax, or even plain car "wash n wax". Use the wax sparingly (that means only use a little bit).
If your visor does mist up from you can simply open it a crack and let the cold outside air in to clear it up again.
If you do a lot of commuting in the cold you might want to investigate if your helmet can be fitted with a pinlock visor. A pinlock is a really good permanent solution.
There are also several chemical treatments available. I don't like any of them (personal preference). Simple cheap waxing works well.

Another good thing for the fogging up on the inside is liquid soap (I've also heard conditioner works well too)
Basically take your visor off and put a SMALL drop on the inside of your visor and spread it round with your fingers. Wait till it dries (1 reason to only use a little) and it will go slightly cloudy, white. Then get a soft lint free cloth and polish it off. Make sure you polish enough that you don't have streaks but that you don't polish it all off, it's a nack so you may need to try a few times.
Or pinlock, I loce my pinlock. It's amazing!!
Carnuba wax works perfectly for repelling rain on the outside. And all the bugs just wipe off easy. Wax often and then when you do gather all the bugs use glasses clean spray or camera lense cleaner. Works perfectly well.

Cat crap inside and out. Pin lock is brilliant but not a complete solution if covering big miles. The edges still fog up, cutting peripheral vision and eventually causing trickles inside the pinlock. Then that fogs up inside the pinlock.
For me that is about an hour in. 2-3 hours with a good cat crapping under the pinlock and around the edges.
If your riding for longer than 2 hours you should be taking a break anyway.

I have a Schuberth Woman's helmet so fits perfectly and the chin padding goes all the way to my throat.
It did fog up a little in the weekend though. THICK fog all the way down from Auckland to Taupo at 5.45am. I didn't open it at all and it kept well but after a wile the sides started to fog a little.
Around the edges outside the pinlock fogs up white, but its so big/wide that it doesn't hinder any vision.

You did very well. My pre-ride dishwash liquid limited fogging for quite a while, but after about an hour of that thick fog I had to crack open the visor. Shortly after that even a crack open wasn't enough, as I had my head turned sideways to be able to see anything.
When we stopped I dried and buffed inside and out. Fail - rode most of the rest of the ride with the visor open, which bought tears to the eyes.
My last pinlock stopped fitting for some reason, I need to get a new one.
I've seen a suggestion to aim your breath down (actually it was more like "you're not a motorcyclist if you don't do this" inference).
Yeah nah, didn't work for me lol. Made it heaps worse in fact, probably because of the good seal around the chin.

If you didn't have a 1000+cc bike I would say yes. They are an excellent tyre. However Michelin only recommend them for sub 1000cc bikes. The Michelin motorcycle tyre selector is here:
http://moto.michelin.com/tyre-selector#s=0
If the tyres are particularly cheap and you are very keen just be very careful with the throttle on them. They simply are not made to handle that power output of a 1000cc+ bike.
The PP3 (Pilot Power 3) would be a better choice for your bike.

Only PR4's and PP3's are recommend for your bike. Even has the recommended tyre pressures. I also note that Michelin recommends a different tyre profile from the factory fitting in both cases as well - so it will change the bikes handling (presumably for the better as far as Michelin in concerned).

The PP3's were a big improvement on the prior ones - particularly with wet weather handling. The PP3 have excellent wet weather handling. They are also particularly good at laying down a lot of power in a straight line (sounds like something you like doing ...).
People often get the PR3 (Pilot Road) and PP3 (Pilot Power) mixed up. So if you read comments or reviews make sure that people are referring to the correct tyre.

I used to run a 200 rear when I first got mine, it made turning more civilised for Lane splitting. As I got more used to the bike I backed down to a 190. 180 went on once. I liked it from a quick turn POV but there were no chicken strips at all. To used to the lean provided by the bigger tyre. Of note: the ground clearance on a Hayabusa is pretty good, my wing mirror on the right (got a bit excited on a roundabout in the wet, stepped the back out. Still don't know how I saved it) and my knees were the only things to ever touch down.
Edit: 200's used to leave me with about 2cm of what I like to think of as "if I get desperate" 190 use to have tagged rather than straight strips. Between 5 and 15mm. I think because the slightly smaller profile deformed a little more, but it could just be because it slid about in corners a little. 200's are a little loose on gravel or loose bits on the road but otherwise a bit like Velcro.

The old metzlers I had still had a small mount of the elephant impressions left on there edges. Z6 is a solid tire for the busa but once the rear gets to about halfway they can't seem to hold traction easily. Hoping the PP3's are a little bit better even if they wear faster. Had 8000 on my last rear with plenty to go before I did a massive burnout...

I think I would prefer to do the newspaper exercise at the car park first (using newspaper to cause a deliberate but short loss of traction with the front wheel).
We would also need to ask the RC people for permission. We can't just rip up their RC track.

That's a big call considering you can't see what's coming up, unless you only ride based on what's behind you.

Corner wasn't blind. Around 100 other riders in front of me.
Take your highvis vest and go somewhere else mate, aint like you haven't crossed the centre line before to dip into a corner.
If its safe whats the problem?

This is NASS. Everything is being watched by newbies. we need to show an example of good riding. That is poor riding.
Bring back MarkW and The Hovel to show you how.

Umm actually I'm with him. I make it a point to not go over the center line cornering. It's not the track, we don't have the whole road.
For me IMO it's a noob mistake, bad habit and indicates lazy and/or poor riding skill. If you can't take the corner in your lane then either decrease speed or increase skill.

I'm with them. If you can see far enough around to see it is safe to cross the centre line there is nothing gained by crossing it.
The basic difference between a road and a racetrack is on a racetrack there is a reasonable probability there is nothing coming the other way.
I refrained from comment because not being there I can't say you were not executing a legal pass, avoiding a pothole or fury animal or some other acceptable reason. Because you did not offer an explanation I am left assuming you have none?

Just thought I would share a couple of photos of a ride I did in the weekend which I thought were cool. I don't need to give a reason why, if you saw the state of some of the riding on Saturday most of you would instantly die of a heart attack. No names but if you have ever ridden or associated with certain mc's before then you will know what I mean.
5500 bucks raised for the Auckland spinal unit and westpac helicopter in what was a awesome day out. Respect to iron thunder mc and all those that attended.
Like I have said at nass before. Stop worrying about other people's riding and start worrying about your own. End of discussion

Yeah, been a few people who I have known who thought their riding was nobodies business but their own.
One of the reasons I virtually stopped posting for the last 3 years. Attending to many funerals for too many young guns who had the view that they knew better.
You're right, you do have a right to ride how you want. We have right to express our concern. You gave us the right to comment when you posted in a safety / survival oriented thread.

Hey,
William Hurst has put me in touch with you guys. I'm a Restricted rider on a Honda VT400 and am looking to learn some new skills from more experienced riders. I live on the North Shore and commute to town most days so probably ride past a couple of you. I would be keen to get involved and learn as much as I can.
Cheers,

Hey Eru, Brian here. Small world eh.
I'll be there tomorrow night. 7pm leaving Z Westgate for the short ride. 7:30pm at the Noel Leemings carpark to play with some low speed stuff.
This will be perfect for you. I'm still learning lots too.
Or if it's really wet and crappy, and no-one is motivated, then straight to the pub - Bar Africa.

For anyone interested in a half hour ride, we leave Z Westgate at 7pm (normally meet there about 6:45pm).
We then end up at the Albany Noel Leemings carpark at 7:30pm for some low speed skills stuff. Some people start the evening here.
After this we head to Bar Africa for debrief. Some people start the evening here, lol.

Was it a front wheel lock or a back?
A back wheel lock feels like you're about to go down, but eventually you'll find that if you keep your head up, and your bike upright, it will happily just "drift" along.
If it's a front wheel lock then, yeah.. panic lol
Or don't panic and just let off the front brake

It was a front lock, started sliding to the right because I didn't stay upright but when I released the break it caught traction, which was lucky!
Were you there on Wednesday? If so what's your name so I can remember which one you were :pinch:

Thank god for NASS!!
Some fucking dumb cunt nearly took me out this morning. Swerving across a bus lane. I locked up the rear and skidded into the bus stop area. Redlined her as thats my only way of screaming and swearing at them.
If it wasnt for NASS I wouldnt know how to have locked her up and stayed upright.
It was a lock up and skid to the left into the stop then fishtailed and swerve round to the right to get around the SVU.
I'm fucking LIVID :angry2: and still shaking

Yeah that is pretty scary. Hopefully the adrenalin will dissipate soon and calmness will return.
I want to try and different kind of emergency braking next time. Rather than starting to brake at a line, I want everyone to choose their own starting braking point so they can bring their bike to a halt *at* a line (aka before an imaginary wall).

Ah, those were the days. Standing in the rain as the wind howled through the car park. Wondering who will show? Who will have their mettle tested on this the most hospitable nights? Who is game for a slow race in a cross gale? Who will brave the hail to test their brakes?

Probably too late - but a word from the wise - don't ride while angry and shaking - we as a species make bad calls when angry....
pull over, breath, count to 5, take 5 - whatever, calm down first, then get back in the saddle
