The fire is outside, but on the opposite side we usually sit on. It is in the under cover area. It was primo.

A good article on the eternal topic of safety gear. I personally like this particular extract: "The very act of riding without motorcycle gear is so ridiculous that it serves to demonstrate a total lack of comprehension about what it's like to operate a bike with skill, what it's like to spend a lifetime on two wheels, the effect weather has on the human body and even compromises their ability to control and operate the motorcycle itself. You are not able to fully appreciate your motorcycle unless you are wearing gear. "

Don't stress too much, you have enough skill and experience to pass with ease. Relax and be smooth.
If I remember rightly, you will need to practice u turns, make sure you exaggerate head checks and get the give way rules right. It's just an ordinary ride, with some guy stalking you.
Best of luck, only a year (CBTA?) til you get your full then!

Quick tip from an examiner I got was put a contrasting sticker near but not on the middle of the back of your helmet. He used to issue coloured or white avery folder labels to those who did not have already.
Washes off easily but it makes head movements really visible from much further back.

Ridge Road sounds like a great option. It's not too long so we'll have time to do some stuff in the car park and it's twisty enough to be enjoyable and let one work on conering at slow speeds (looking where you want to go, working the throttle, being relaxed and getting the right lines). I vote for Ridge Road too.

I don't see what people's obsession with that road is. It's dangerous. It's covered in pine needles and has driveways up the entire length. It's the only road I've seen with a 30km speed limit that's not temporary.
NASS is meant for learner riders and that is not a learner route at all. The guy that's coming along with Scott has only been riding his bike for a month, and not sure if he's even taken it on the motorway yet!!
There are 6 other evenings a week you could take that road if you so like, so why choose it on a NASS night that is designed and intended for learner riders. It's like if I wanted to go for a high speed blat I wouldn't expect to do so at NASS.
I for one will not be taking it. And will be taking the customary route to the carpark to practice slow speed skills, which is generally the intended reason people come to NASS.

Sounds ok if you ride it at your own pace, its fine, day light and plenty of stuff to practice your observational skills and low speed
cornering, a good mental hurdle for you too by the sounds, just think it through before u start and ride your own ride.

Ridge road is great and probably has the most bends for any road of that length (not a lot of straight bits). Pine needles are more evident on Paremoremo road and only ''dangerous'' when it's wet.

People seem to have this misconception that any road is learner friendly if done slow enough. But as a learner I can tell you that is not true. My first 25 scared the bejesus out of me and I grandmaed it around it.
You can learn to corner properly on a laned road that's big enough for you and another car coming the other way. Peak and Old North are perfectly fine with their 35's and 45's well posted and wide enough to cater for cars coming the opposite direction.

You cant always know what you are going to encounter on rides on new roads, who cares if you nana around a corner, its
part of learning, sometimes you just have to extend yourself a little more than you may like to improve and gain confedence.
Lets see you put your low speed car park practice to use,you CAN do it.

In riding NZ roads there are many that have the traits you mention. Maha is right in saying that there is no problem with the road. If you are getting frights then look at your road position and observation. Stay out wider and look through the corner before tipping in.

All well and good once you have the principles of riding down. I personally would not take an absolute learner to a road that technical.
I rode worse when I was learning how to ride. I have never turned back from a road because of condition or difficulty. I survived. That does not mean the best way to learn how to swim is chuck someone off the Waiheke ferry rabidly shouting "swim Forrest, swim".
When I used to lead this ride I took people down that road a few times.
When all riders present knew what was ahead and agreed they had the skills and experience that they were confident to go.
Usually people who had at least done emergency braking and cornering drills and had a briefing on lane position an sight lines.
Some of those corners are a very bad place to learn you don't know about lane position or sight lines. Or worse that you do t know how to emergency brake.
All depends on the skill of the learner. Some who have not done their first thousand k I would. Not many.

Have you seen the 30km part of ridge road? There is no staying wide as the 2 way road Is the same width as a single western motorway lane.
I do not think it an appropriate road for the level of riders that NASS often attracts. As in people riding less than a month.
As I have already said there are other roads with suitably tight corners that are safer for a learning environment.

No misconception, of all the learner rides that I have done over the years, very little thought was ever put on the 'learner friendly' road rating, just turn up and do it. In fact, after any tighter stuff, most would say ''fucking loved that, is there any more''?... the difference being, that I (or any other experienced rider with us) would spell out the route prior. It probably comes down one question, Do you feel that you are competent enough to be leading a group of learners without the presence of experienced riders?
Seeing that you have only just got your restricted, it is probably the safer bet to use roads that you personally are comfortable with riding solo, not as a pillion.

Agreed. I remember one ride ending up a gravel road. Two ways to look at it. One shit this is scary, the other is well I have to know how to do this so lets get on with it.
I remember the time somebody didnt enjoy some advice that a certain trainer gave on the ride to the Cape. I saw it as a learning chance and took as much advise as i could which helped me a lot. All about attitude.

Yip, all part of the learning Rob, 2nd year we had terrible rain heading back to camp from Kohukohu. Metal road in part through that Peria area. Attitude/confidence and competence with those leading and those around you, rubs off. All who rode that day had a blast, though dirty and wet by the end.

A, then you are either a poor communicator or you overstated this experience. Either case a gravel road should not have presented a threat, the load may have.
B, so you think routinely educating people by putting them in scenarios they don't feel equipped to deal with is okay? You don't think that it is irresponsible to introduce people to risks they are not properly equipped to evaluate?
C, how can you expect someone to make that judgement with insufficient information to make an informed decision and in the same breath say you make a calculated decision? By postulating that you calculate the risk you suggest both you have adequate information to make the choice and you would be prepared to turn back if it was beyond your current abilities. Yet you imply that others would be weak for making the same call.

I don't get it. How is it disrespectful to discuss openly concerns for how learners are treated an what is expected if riders?
EOD it is up to PDath and co how they lead a ride and where to.
How other riders treat learners ( or even more experienced members ) has a huge impact on the health and welfare of this community.

Wow what a lot of noise.
I'm not too fussed about the exact road we take. It's more of an assessment of what condition various roads are in, the capabilities of the riders that come along that night, and what I think people might need most assistance with.
Last night the weather was great, the roads were great and we had riders come along who are more used to short low speed commuter riding, so we went on a longer rural ride. It still had 35 km/h corners. It also had 100km/h stretches. It had beautiful sweeping corners perfect for practising corner lines and counter steering. Ridge road is a lot shorter, so although it is much more intense having more riding time seemed a better fit last night.
I feel pretty confident that I got the road selection right as everyone seemed pretty happy.

Well since my bike has finally arrived after 3 months of waiting :brick: . I can now say that (if I fix it in time) I`ll join in on the next NASS, keen to meet some new riders chit chat and hopefully be able to help out a bit.
So about that ( fix it in time ). Darn battery didn't survive the trip, but then again it already was an old one before I shipped it. So I`ll be getting a new battery or just some acid for the spare that I brought along. Which will hopefully also fix the ignition problems that started while I was riding on Coatesville-Riverhead Hwy. Suddenly a top speed of 50kph isn't very nice on that road. Stopped, tried to fix it, couldn't :(. Luckily Kevin from MRS (http://motorcyclerecovery.vpweb.co.nz/) happened to drive past and was willing to pick me up and drive me back home.
So... new battery, fix the ignition and I`m all set :D.

It's a lot of nothing and than a lot of everything.
Did you bed them in?
This can be a symptom (IME) of either pads that are not bedded in or fluid that needs Settling / Bleeding. Sometimes thought it is just a case of you have changed the type of pad. E.g Going from sintered to unsintered or vice versa freaks some riders out with how different they feel cold.
**Before you attempt the below: make sure you have plenty of road of other closed surface and you are confident emergency stopping your bike, also before initiating the hard braking parts make sure you know how much space you have behind you. Other wise you may want to ask a more experienced rider to do this for you.**
Bedding in = getting the pads hotter than they are likely to get in general operation to burn off the compounds that are on them to stop them from degrading and sweating on the shelf.
This is done by getting up to 30km and slow rapidly to 10km ( don't stop, you are trying to get the pads hot, stopping completely makes the rotors get hotter than the pads do, something about tranferring all the heat to the more conductive metal, this has been known to warp disks by about the 10th pass ) as soon as you reach 10km release the brake and accelerate up to 40km and brake rapidly to 10km.
Repeat for 50-10 and 60-10.
Repeat for 60-10 but being a bit more aggresive with the brakes until you feel either the wheel is on the verge of slipping or until you feel the brakes fade off, without slacking off there is less braking available.
If you still have no brake fade try 70-10 or even 80-10 if you have the confidence.
By now your brakes should smell like an oven that is on but with nothing in it.
You may even have a tink tink sound coming from your disks if you come to a complete halt or even visible smoke.
The hotter you get your brakes the more effective they will be able to be in a real emergency... although afterwards and before you need to pull up in an emergency you may need to clean the detritus from the air holes cross drilled in your rotors (on most modern or twin disk setups) for this I use "brake clean" and an alan key the same size as the holes.
If your pads are not bedded in they will be significantly less effective, especially in the wet and may cause your rotors or pads to glaze or get covered in a glossy coat that is very slippery when wet.
Other possiblity wether bedded or not is that you need to either bleed or compress your brakes.
I'd start with compressing if they have already been bedded. Tie your brake lever as tightly to your bar as you can and leave over night. If still a problem you may need to either bleed your brakes or change your fluid. A good idea if your bike stands for longer than 6 months, the fluid is over 2 years old. Doesnt cost much but the fluid itself is quite hydroscopic and becomes less efficient over time.
Your brakes should feel like squeezing a handball or other air filled ball. Resistance and action (amount of force applied at the other end) should be relatively consisent and follow a linear scale of resistence (almost straight line steady increase) Effect should be steady increase curve.
Some dual disks can have a "second bite" this is usually an air pocket in the link hose only course of action is to bleed your hoses.

The only thing going through my mind is if the master cylinder is overfilled. Juniper; when you replaced the fluid does it shows as just being up to the fill line in the brake fluid tank? It isn't way overfull is it?

Well I promised myself last week that I would come. But foolishly promised some friends to have some diner with them at the Dutch Delight in Birkenhead at 6.30 tonight... I`ll just go for the ATNR tomorrow and keep my wednesday evenings free from now on <_<

Passed my CBT2 - only 4 mistakes, so my riding has improved from when I did my restricted (as you would hope)
Once again - cheers to the guys that run NASS - free training is better than no training, and as good as Paid training :niceone:

It's better to sell a bike in Summer, and buy one in Winter. What a tough choice you have.

Well, since I commute on my bike, I will need to keep till I can get a new bike, but I have seen options on Trade-me and am forming my wish list of bikes to test ride (for Market Research....)

Well I`m definitely game for a ride. However since I've never been to a NASS and dont know any of the roads in this country or the people involved... I`ll just lay back and cross my fingers that something will happen.
