My parter and I are wanting to tag along to the ride/training this evening. Can someone please clarify the meeting point? We would be coming from North, so do we meet at the end of the North western? or (I saw something mentioned about Albany) does the group go from there up to Albany?? Thanks in advance.

Be good to see someone else along on a VTR 250

Sorry for the week old riders!
That route was quite a bit harder than usual.

I think it's great that there are a bunch of experienced riders honing skills at NASS (is why I'll continue to pop in from time to time) but I get the feeling the needs of the total newb might be being forgotten.

It's totally natural for the experienced people to want a more fun ride to Albany but going via the back roads (Ridge, Riverhead/Coatsville etc) could be asking a little much out of green riders and may be an accident waiting to happen. Especially as they'll be trying to keep up and not get lost.

Has anyone thought about splitting into groups with at least one always going the easy way via Greenhithe?

EDIT: Fuck I sound like an old man  - but seriously.....

Nagash
12th November 2008, 21:09
I agree with you Discotex,

We had just forgotton to the normal introductions and we didn't actually know they'd only been riding for a week till we got to the car park..

I'll make an effort to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Good night guys, was a hell of alot of fun.

Hey guys don't worry about tonight....we had fun anyway. The route was a nice little challenge, and we wont ever push it beyond our confort zone so its all good. Granted there were a couple of dodgy corners, but its all character building right

The hanging off your bike around a corner however probably isn't at the top of my "skills to learn" list. Maybe we will give that a go in week two :headbang:

Was nice meeting you all....will be joining you again for sure

Well if all the new ladies come along next week we will try and do somthing abit more in tune to your riding level. I do appoligise for not doing the intro thing.:shit:
Anyways it was a goo night to be had by all. I really enjoyed that mark.
AND I GOT MY FOOT TOUCHING THE GROUND ON THE WAY HOME!!!!!!:wari:
Knee down next!:Punk:

EJK
13th November 2008, 13:16
To tell you the truth, last night was very different. OK I won't go into details.

Grrr... Maybe I will...

The Good part: Well it was quite fun. Learning to get our bum off the seat was OK I think. Well it's certainly safer to do this in a carpark than doing it on all Albany roundabouts, so I won't argue.
Also seems everyone had fun last night. Some people getting pegs down and trying to get their knee down etc. Like Mark said, sometimes we do need some fun don't we? :Punk:

The Baddie: However (as I hypothesized) it was a matter of time to change this practice into a total Frenzy.

I don't know... To tell you guys the truth it was the most uncongenial night I ever had over a year and 3 months of AWNMR/AWNR/NASS attendance.
By time to time the riders got lower and lower (I guess that's an improvement) and faster and faster. But seriously how many times do you guys show off inside the carpark but don't actually put it into practice during a ride?

Some of you will know who they are. Remember, above words don't apply to all of you so if something I said offended some of those who were doing the good, It wasn't my intention and I do apologise.

If you want to show off, I can teach you how to get your knee down. I'll bring my strap-on knee sliders next week if you wish. Oh by the way, next week you really should check out my other pair of boots...

Well, I think the important bit was the discussion about it afterwards at the pub.

Learning the physical skill of how to lean off the bike is the first thing you need to know, then, once you discovered the effects it has on your handling first hand you then find out how to put it in to practice which we discussed throughout the training session and at the pub.

I agree with you, I've always tried leaning off the bike around the car park just as abit of a muck around because I know all the car park's lumps, bumps and hazards but I never figured out when to use it on the road.

After last night I tried it this morning on my commute to work and on the way back (Scenic Drive) and it worked quite effectively in keeping my pegs off the road. And i'll be doing it more frequently from now on.

Personally, I had no objections with last nights lesson and I think it was abit of much needed fun. And it was alot of fun, no accidents and no one pushed themselves further then they needed. But i've always been described as abit of a pillock when it comes to riding, to which I take no offence, i'm not ignorant to that fact.

Obviously different things are covered each week, some things you'll take heed of and practice on the road, other's are better to just ignore and write the lesson off as a hang out with some like-minded, albeit scruffy, blokes.

We're all responsible adults.. right?

[EDIT] And everyone seems to have ignored the theory session on group riding at the beginning! My personal gripe of the week was group riding and I thought everything you needed to know was covered well. Just saying..

P.S. And I had to look up uncongenial.. that's a pretty negative term to use there don't yah think?

EJK
13th November 2008, 22:39
Yes it is a negative word and it's a very subtle one too.

Nice point Nagash (I agree with your first and second paragraph), however I was more referring to the show off bit. Alright, maybe my observation was very shallow/ prejudice. Lets see how we do next week then.

See you guys next week.

P.S. Yes I was once too a show off kid (Ask Fireball or Discotex). A bloody hoon scraping pegs till I replaced it with the pillion's pegs cause it was so worn, however that was untill Mack-the-Knife shut me up for good. I'm glad that he did it. I too may still show off but I really try not to...

Just out of curiosity who did you think was showing off?

Having fun yes showing off not really.:oi-grr:

The NASS provids a safe place for people such as us to learn. what ever thoses skills may be.
As Mark pointed out.. If it is not for you or you are not comfertable doing it then leave. it is like people that complain about things that offend them on T.V. if you don't want to watch it turn it off! I am not trying to be harsh what i am trying to say is you have a choice.

I couldnt make it last week as I had a cateract done and cant ride for a week...exept I will have to on Sunday.

I am in with Discotex on leading and tailending a slower ride for the newbies.

You, my friend, are one of the longest serving current regulars of the AWNMR/AWNR/NASS and your opinion is most certainly a valid one.

And i'm glad that you brought attention to it, we don't want things to go down the same track as when the AWNR got shut down for supposedly teaching reckless maneuvers - Wheelies, Knee down, etc. etc.

A strictor introduction will be brought into the beginning of the ride again like it used to, and perhaps discussions on exactly what we want to learn at the beginning should be re-introduced.

All the regulars who came over winter have done a hell of alot of the same thing, but now that it's summer we're gonna see a fair few newer riders again and we need to crack down on our lesson regime again.

More focus on theory, less on practical, all that malarky.

Your concerns are what makes you a great bloke EJ, and I salute you for it.

I personally found it very useful on Wed...

There have been many times on the roads where I've not had the confidence to take a corner at anything other than really slow speeds, or where I've gone in too hot for my skills and had to slow down a lot mid corner.

On Wed, I was able to push myself that bit further, and gain confidence in my abilities, and the bikes, to lean over.. I was amazed at the speed I was able to go around corners. That sounds very much like a hoon comment, but it means I now know a lot more about my own and my bikes limits, and there are times when that is needed...

Whenever I buy a car, I always take it somewhere quiet, and do some high speed brake testing, now to most, I probably look like a complete arse, whose thrashing the tits off his new car.. What i'm actually doing is trying to learn where the limits of my car are (and beyond, but in a safe environment), so that I know exactly what my car is capable of in the event of needing it. To me, what we were doing on Wed was the same kind of thing... (well, it was for me anyway).

The problem with cornering is bikes is you never want to find out beyond!

No, totally agree.... but clearly none of us were taking it too far on Wed, otherwise we'd have been off !?!

I guess my car analogy wasn't the best.. but I guess what i'm trying to say, is that at least now I'm more aware that my limit is further away than I originally thought!

At the moment, when it comes to bikes, i'm very happy to learn anything from anyone (anyone half sensible that is) is prepared to teach me. If that's leaning through corners, or balancing whilst stationary I don't really mind.. I'm finding i'm able to put the vast majority of what we learn on a wed night in to practice on a daily basis !

well after my mad dash across town to get from hunua to westgate in peak hour traffic in under 45mins i think i did well

was good to catch up with some old AWNMR riders EJ, please do something about that FXR i swear its gong to burst into flames, all i could smell was gas

as for the ride and content.... not overly impressed im not here to complain but really... there is a risk of an accident happening if you're not careful with what you are teaching.
the first part of the riding in groups chat was good, but when it digressed into weaving in and out of white lines, scaring other motorists etc i was rather shocked. You are there setting a standard to new bikers and encouraging dangerous behaviour i would think is not acceptable.

i know things have changed but bring back some of the content that was in AWNMR if you need to have 2 groups of riders advanced and learner i will happily offer myself to be available on wednesdays to take a learner session if need be.

Just think about what you are showing new riders, in the end i know its down to personal choice what you do on the road but in a group such as this, safety and positive role modling should come first.

(and this is my 2c from an intsructors point of view, sorry if this has caused offence its just i couldnt let an accident happen and think.... what if i didnt speak up about my concerns)

16th November 2008, 00:46
Enjoyed the ride up to albany on the diff route with more corners, however I also agree that alot has changed from the awnmr days. I was comfortable with things but it didnt seem so friendly for learners albeit there were no problems on the night.

Maybe prior to the rides a little could be said about the plans for the night etc?
So that it can be guaged as to how suitable it would be for diff levels of experience. For example - Emergency Braking=Good for those still learning, Def would come & bring mates that are new to bikes along. Bum off seat=Not really ideal for learners, wouldnt bring a learner along kinda thing. :)

Anyhows, was a cool ride out there & although us girls skipped the carpark practical, we all had a good time. Hope to catch ya's again soon.:sunny:

It's not the exercise thats wrong, It's the more-experienced-rider's confidence thats getting out of control!

Last week I had fun & experimented the leaning angle vs weight shift. It was a good opportunity to do so around the carpark since I don't try them on the road yet. The exercise was great.

I'd have to admit, first time coming I was a bit apprehensive, riding amongst a large group of sportier bikes...
But I got over that very quickly and have loved every minute of it.
BIG props to the Mentors!!

I've only been riding for about 6 weeks now, and haven't found any exercises so far to be out of my limits.
Everyone at their different levels seem to be benefiting, while at the same time having fun.

I really enjoyed myself the other night, I must admit the carpark drill was over my head at this early stage I am scared to even fart let alone move on the seat but I am sure this will change with some more time on the bike, I am careful not to push myself beyond my limits as thats when I will have a shocker, so we were happy to sit that one out, but no doubt we will try it one day.
I am keen to learn more basic handilng skills, no point learning to go fast if we cant stop!
Unfortunetly I have my nephews birthday this wednesday so will probally have to miss this one but should be there next week.:niceone:

O.k. I haven't posted all week for a couple of reasons.
1. we are in the process of restructuring at work at the moment and my life is well and truly taken up with that! makeing people redundunt this close to Xmas is a harsh call.:buggerd:
2. There are some things going on in my personal life that have effected the way i look at things from here on out.:pinch:

I appoligise EJ i was out of line posting what i did last week and am sorry for that. Like Josh pointed out you are one of the longest serving guys and people should learn to respect other peoples opinon even if it not what they think. i had a really bad day and used Wednesday night for a bit of a blow out which is not what it is there for.:girlfight:

The beer thing. Just to make this clear for anyone that would like to join us for this. It is 1 and only 1 beer, 1 hour before the ride. either me or josh will be there between 5:30 and 6:00.

I think what josh says has some merit and would be a good idea to bring the introductions back now that we will be having some newer member coming along. so what i propose is this. at 6:50 we will get everyboday together and do it like Big Dog used to. intoduce our selves and then explane the ride we are going to take. This will give anyone with questions and concers a chance to bring them to point. :scooter:

O.K. That is my l;arge post done for the year. The weather looks like it will be good tonight so i will meet everybody at the carpark at 6:30 or so.

I'm going to try to make it along next week: I need some practice before my restricted test in a couple of weeks, and maybe some constructive criticism.
I live in South Auckland though, so need to factor in time to get home afterward at 70 before 10pm. What time does it normally finish? I guess it might take about half an hour to get home from the Westgate area.

Slyer
4th December 2008, 06:38

Sweet,

Can we tell the Rozzers that when they pull us over :D... "It's ok officer Fluntcap, Slyer off KB said we could do 100 !!!!"

Good night last night guys... getting more and more enjoyment out of ridge road... I for one need to heed the setting the bike up before the corner advice.. as well as the not braking through the corner advice... I think it's the gravel patches making me very conscious of stability and speed (but then braking on them probably isn't going to increase stability anyway.

I think your right Fizbin... next week is the last one.... I'm not sure if I can cope till Jan for more wed night rides...

@Samgab...
There's a couple of us make that journey, (Albany, over the bridge, and down the motorway...) and it's never been a problem getting home for 10 (last night was just after 9pm for example!, and that was after going to the pub)

Just to "attempt" to clear something up from the other night at the pub !

Learner licence conditions
If you hold a learner motorcycle licence, you must adhere to the following conditions:

You must carry your learner licence at all times when you're riding.
You must have an 'L' plate attached to the rear of your motorcycle.
You must not ride a motorcycle with an engine capacity greater than 250 cc.
You must not go faster than 70 km/h on the open road.
You must not ride between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am.
You must not carry a pillion passenger.
You should not drink any alcohol before driving.
If you're under 20, your legal alcohol limit is 30 mg/100 ml of blood. This is effectively a zero limit - consuming one drink will mean a rider can be charged with drink driving.
If you're over 20, the legal alcohol limit is 80 mg/100 ml of blood. Your riding, however, may be affected well before you reach the legal alcohol limit.

Unless someone can tell me otherwise.. the over 20 alcohol limit for someone on a Learners is the same as it is for someone with a full, or in a car etc etc ?

The generic NZ rode code says
Twenty or over

You must not drive if you have more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, or more than 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

i think the most discussed plan was a variation on the ATNR route (done at a somewhat more sedate and less license endangering pace i suspect ;)) followed by a beer, a feed, and a good ol bit of chinwag at the pub.

I'm going to be around aucks right through the break (except for a couple of days at christmas), working through but finishing at 3pm every day. So if anyone wants to go for a ride, just drop me a message on here or a text

I recommend doing the Albany RC track! Get a time stop watch thing and could record our lap time? Hehehe Plus we will add penalties like "Foot down = 1 second penalty" etc. Well thats my suggestion but if you guys want to do a pure ride, then I won't stop you.

Bit of fun time trial bucket racing actually sounds good. Test our slow speed cornering, braking and lines pretty well.

Did the beers last week, this week's purely a ride.

I'll take a look around and come up with some suggestions.
A modifided thursda ynight ride got banterd around last week:chase:
somthing like up don buck, down red hills, sunnyvale, Mcenteen, waitakere, up to Kumu, then no to old north, onto peak road, hell we could go to welsford and back!:bleh: or head to albany from there for the backet thing:niceone:

I'll be there tonight, the RC track sounds like a great idea, however I believe there are chains to stop vehicle access?

A ride to Wellsford sounds like a good idea, not sure about the road conditions though - seeing that it's been raining a bit the last few days.

We can discuss this further at Albany tonight. :niceone:

Good night guys... Enjoyed the ride over to Albany... gotta love those extra twisties thrown in for good measure ! :)..

On the way home... on the southern, just before Greenlane, ridnig along with Sgtjackass, and either Gubb or Badger (hard to tell those two bikes apart), there was a mr plod car trundling along doing about 85 in the slow lane... I thought to myself, hmm, he looks like he's waiting for someone to give him a reason to turn on the flashy things.... so, it being 10:15, me not far off 100, and having a nice shiny Yellow "L" on the back of my bike, i thought... I'll pull in behind and trundle the next 3 - 4k till I need to pull off.....
Low an behold, before my turn off, he's gone screaming down the road with the blues and two's... wasn't after you was it Gubb / Badger ?

Next wed should be called the "A Mother in Law isn't for xmas, i'd rather have a dog !" ride... for those of us that will need to escape the clutches of that particular scenario ! :D

T'was I :)

I saw mr plod, and you eased off, figured out what the story was. I've lost the light on my speedo, so took it what i thought was a little easy as i rolled past ploddy. Once i thought i was clear of him, gave it a bit more giggle juice and started jumping gaps in the traffic, then within a couple of seconds i saw him coming with the lights on. Didnt think i'd done anything pull-over-worthy, but still shat a chicken and partially barfed up my heart. Sure enough, he boosted on past, with a cage not far behind doing a good 115, so i pulled in behind him for a bit and weaved my way down to Mt Welly. as the heart rate returned to normal.

Have a good christmas all. i wont be here next week, as i am riding up north for the token effort of pretending to care about the family for chrissy. So if anyone fancies a ride up 16 on the wednesday, gimme a yell  My final destination is either Whangarei or Kerikeri (not sure yet), but any company for as far as anyone feels like is most welcome :wari:

The point of these nights is to help out learners, you'll be fine
If i am able to make it that night i will be riding up from just by the Mt Wellington on-ramp, i can cruise up with you at a gentle pace if you like.
If you are really fresh on a bike / not too confident on the roads, we may be best to head straight for the carpark. The ride over from westgate can be a bit daunting when you are first starting out.

Very small turn out last night at Westgate...

Even smaller turn out at Albany ! :blank:

We (3 of us) just buggered off for a cruise (Fizbin can tell you where, cause I was just following), but some cracking roads, some nice twisties, some nice straight fast bits etc..

Got me thinking, Maybe it's worth doing a longer ride occasionally as well as the week on week training stuff... perhaps once a month or something like that.

Found it really good to get out there in a small group and go around some roads that are not familiar to me.

I did however learn one VERY valuable lesson last night, i NEED a tinted visor.... there were points on the trip, riding straight in to the sun, where I couldn't see a bloody thing !

Slyer

Or you can get an iridium visor, shiny.

I just realised. I took the Lonely one home after work today. It was alright, especially the Wright Rd leads right down to my current temporary house. Love it.

Also th Albany GP is right down the hill. Gotta love Albany... (Plus lots and lots of round abouts). Ah one last thing, theres a round about just 200m down from my drive way, where no vehicles come. If I want I can go round and round and round and round and round and round...
