Have missed alot of these meetings cos every bloody week theres something wrong with the "trusty" GN :)..This week i have a slow leak on the rear. suppose i need to upgrade from the standard tires anyway.

So, Im wanting to trade the GN in for a sportier 250cc bike. Any ideas where i can trade??? i have some cash and dont mind the rest on HP....

ps have a good, safe ride tonight..hope to join you guys when i get the GN sorted or i have a sportier bike.cheers

Hey bro, Choco is selling his 250 hornet. Check out his listing in the online trading section. Hornets are such great bikes and enough horsepower to keep you happy for a while:yes:

There's a very simple economical rule for this.

Never utilise higher purchase on a depreciating asset.

Save your money, get the tyre's sorted on the GN.

If it's your only method of transport to get to work and it is beyond affordable repair, then maybe. But otherwise i'd say save your money..

Essentially, you're going to lose alot of money on a trade in, specially for a trade in. Stick it on Trade Me, not really the season for buying motorbikes, but heaps and heaps of people are getting into motorcycling recently, and a GN is the perfect beginner's bike.

This is all considering money matters to you.. I've heard many a time, money is no object, there's always higher purchase... Being in debt is not a position you want to be in at this moment in time.

---

Otherwise, good to see a few of you on wednesday, it's been a long time.

Badger8
23rd May 2009, 22:04
Not so sure about a depreciating asset there Josh... There is the potential for getting burned, but if you do it smart you can get away okay.
Both my 250's were bought from a dealer, so naturally i payed a little more than i should have.
Got my GN for $2900 ex demo. Rode it for a bit under a year, thrashed the shit outta it, went to cape reinga and back twice, rode everywhere with the throttle on the stopper, wheelied it like hell, threw it across carparks etc. Traded it in with the dealer on my next bike for $2500 (could probably have got 3 grand if i sold it on TM and had the time to wait etc.)
$400 bucks for a year and about 18000k on it, not bad in my books.
Got the 250 Hornet for $6k with around 5,000km on the clock (fresh import) and rode the hell outta that. Doubled those km's in the first month, and didnt slow down. Rode that thing to its limits and then some. Sold that for $5,800 within 4 days of listing it on TM.
Couldve easily got my $6k back if i held out, or pressed a harder bargain, but i was happy to let it go for that, cause i literally got my flatmate to drive me 7h down the country right then to pick up a my new bike (my current Hornet 900) that afternoon for $6k

I dont know whether i've got lucky, or whether it is to be expected though, so mine may not be a typical story. Also depends on any damage too i guess, i kept my bikes as mint as i could (couple of drops and that's about it)

Personally i found the jump from a GN to a Hornet 250 a fairly good step. It was a little intimidating at first, but it set me up very well for stepping up to a bigger bike when the time came.
Also, i knew it was time to upgrade from the GN. I had mastered it, i could ride better than it could handle, and i was getting myself in trouble. It was only a matter of time before it was major trouble instead of silly things in carparks, so i'm glad i did it when i did. In the end, it all comes down to what you want to do, all the best with whatever that may be :wari:

Hi everyone,

Just got my Bandit so would be pretty keen on having a look at one of these sessions.. I'm in Albany too so the Noel Leeming car park is just up the road from me (presuming it's the Albany Mega Centre one?)
Will it be on this Wednesday?? Will definately be there, IF my uni assigment is handed in on time haha

Cheers

Yup, the noel leeming carpark at the albany mega centre, there's like a pet store and a postie plus there (i think?), up the hill a bit from the burger king, across the road from the pak n save :bleh:

Will definitely be on, but depending on turnout and just how attrocious the weather is as to how much practice is done!

cheers guys for you advice. In the weekend i test rode the hornet, bandit, gsx and cbr. I found that the cbr or bandit was an overall best bike for me, however still not quick enough. Lately i been riding around on my mates cbr900. ( fucking awesome by the way ) This is what made me think about tranding in initially.

I will sell the gn privately because the trade in price came to 970 ( fuck that )

As for finance, i will try not too. However,Credit cards are good now these days. 12% pa, 65 days intreset free. Dunno!!!

My bike, which was going to take 4 weeks to get all the parts... I've just been called by the folks at Spectrum, and told they've done everything bar the scraped mirror and the bezel on the dash, so I can either collect it and take it back for those bits when they get them, or collect today.... duh, guess which option I'm going for ! :)...

Leaving work now to go collect... so, short of another bin (fingers crossed I don't...) will see you boys on Wed at Westgate !

Good stuff mate. Those 900's are lightning quick, but they just get ya in trouble quicker! :sweatdrop The likes of a CBR or bandit is a good step from a GN, and will set you up well for a bigger bike all in good time

Good to catch up last night.
I hit a patch of sand on the Onehunga onramp to the Mangere Bridge on the way home. Front slid sideways, closely followed by the rear sliding. Fortunately I ended up back on grippy tarmac shortly afterwards, so was all good. But it's a bit hairy when that happens on an otherwise smooth and grippy road.
There's a whole lot of road works going on there, so I guess a roading truck lost a pile of sand on the corner there.

I was just kidding around mate, I know you'll be careful and sensible: I wouldn't have lent you the bike if I didn't know that about you. And really, it was just the first year of those bikes (1997), without the steering damper that had any real handling issues, from what I read. By all accounts it's a very well sorted bike. Look forward to checking it out on Wed. :niceone:

Count me in, wind, rain, or ...more rain.
Hopefully all the people who said they'd come do end up coming along.
Should be fun.
Hopefully it won't be as cold as last week, plus now I have an Oxford SnugTM and thermal glove liners!

However it started making a strange knocking noise. So the guy is gonna get it checked out on monday. I'm just going to have to be patient, cos the bike is incredibly awesome.

Or U-turns in a single car park space?

I think he ment 2 car parks - coz he said the turning circle of the beemer is 4,something...which is about 2 car parks

good thing to try next week

3L4NS1R
10th June 2009, 23:19
nah completely possible in one carpark. Whatcha gotta do is pull a front wheel stand, while giving it a good twist in the torso. This will flick you around 180 degrees, and wah la your turning circle is within the single carpark. Think he was going to show us this till someone suggested the pub.

Following distance rule (from police viewpoint)

50km/h --- 5 car lenghts
60km/h --- 6 car lenghts
70km/h --- 7 car lenghts
80km/h --- 8 car lenghts
90km/h --- 9 car lenghts
100km/h ---10 car lenghts

That following distance rule has one problem in my opinion now that i think of it - if I have 5 car lenghts distance when doing 50km/h then the guy behind me who is only 1 car lenght startes tailgating me, and doing stupid shit around me. Hence more likely to do a dodgy overtaking and take me out in the meantime.

Another thing is that if you have a gap so big this means that people will keep pulling in front of you and keep coming in your lane if you are on the motorway shall we say. In following that same thory , it means that after every car has pullid in front of me I now need to readjust the following distance to the next equivivalent in car lenghts according to the speed we are travelling at. This in turn will mean that the guy who was tailgating me from before that gets even more agravated and even more likely to do stupid stuff.

Thats my theory anyway. I will give it a go over the next few days and see how many readons for mirror removal I will get from cagers.

Danae
10th June 2009, 23:56
I reckon although you should be wary of what the tailgating cagers might do, the reason you leave space in front of you is cos if you need to brake/dodge some crazy shit going on up ahead, you've increased the distance you have to slow down. Cager behind therefore has enough time to slam on the anchors while you are slowing down, reducing the chance of getting rear-ended. Make sense? :sweatdrop

Wow, takes quite a jump to 1000km/h! Must have crazy fast reaction times!
I agree with the full lock turns next week, and maybe some tight fig 8's.
Next week is the night before my full licence test!!!! Aaaargh!

2 second rule! well when you start counting you are potentially setting yourself up for a crash. By the 2nd second (lol), more concentration goes into counting then on the rode... Ugh, i aint gonna pull out a slide rule and try to work out the perspective measurements of 'car-length' whilst riding... i know how fast i can happily stop in the conditions, and will ride accordingly. I sometimes use the 2-second-rule, but mostly just wing it. I often find when i check out the 2-sec it is pretty close to where i'm sitting anyway. 10 years of driving / riding does tha to ya i guess :D

Totally agree with Toto.... not always practical to follow that far behind.. cars pulling in to the gap, people tailgating etc !!!

If you want to learn more about 2 second rules, or following distances... or even "External and Internal Risk Factors", I can strongly recommend the Defensive Driving course....

Oh My god..... I did the 2nd session last night, and I swear, if I make it through all 4, I will deserve a medal...

It's all about peer pressure, and attitude etc... and other things that are far more appropriately aimed at 17 year olds !!!

You can if you turn right at the lights and come back up the side street.
Trick is to turn right at the previous roundabout when coming down Don Bucks Rd, then sneak up all stealthy like a ninja and appear at the meet point from the dark alleyway ;)
